Padmavati controversy based on rumours: Bhansali tells Parliamentary panel
Amidst a seething discussion over his movie "Padmavati", chief Sanjay Leela Bhansali on Thursday showed up before a Parliamentary panel here and kept up that the column over the yet-to-be-discharged motion picture was simply in light of gossipy tidbits, unequivocally dismissing charges that he had twisted recorded actualities about the sixteenth century Rajput ruler.
Bhansali was barbecued for more than two hours by individuals from the Parliamentary Standing Committee on IT as he showed up before it in Parliament House with Prasoon Joshi, who heads the Central Board of Film Certification (CBFC).
Sources revealed to IANS that the producer was inquired as to why he had screened the film for a couple of select writers even before it was cleared by the edit board.
"All the discussion over the film depends on gossipy tidbits. I have not misshaped realities. The film depends on a ballad by Malik Muhammad Jayasi," Bhansali stated, alluding to the sixteenth century Indian Sufi artist's epic lyric "Padmavat".

New Post has been published on http://www.visionmp.com/censor-board-decids-to-give-sanjay-leela-bhansalis-padmavati-a-ua-certificate-without-any-cuts/
'Padmavati' is now 'Padmavat', CBFC suggests 5 modifications
Mumbai: The censor board has decided to give Sanjay Leela Bhansali’s “Padmavati” a UA certificate without any cuts but has suggested that the director change the film’s title to “Padmavat” besides making four other modifications.
There were reports doing the rounds that the board had suggested 26 cuts to the film, but in a statement, Central Board of Film Certification (CBFC) chairman Prasoon Joshi clarified that they have only advised five modifications, including the title change, but “no cuts”.
The board has also suggested modifications in disclaimers, pertinently adding one regarding not glorifying the practice of “Sati” and also relevant changes in the song ‘Ghoomar’ to befit the character portrayed, he said.
Joshi added that the producers and the director of the film are “completely in agreement” with the proposed modifications.
The board had a meeting of their examining committee on December 28 and decided to give the film a “UA certification along with some modifications and likely change of the film’s title on the basis the attributed material/creative source”.
Bhansali, who appeared before a parliamentary panel, had said his lavishly-mounted Rs 150 crore period drama, featuring Deepika Padukone, Shahid Kapoor and Ranveer Singh, is based on the 16th century epic poem “Padmavat” by Malik Muhammad Jayasi.
Besides Joshi, the meeting was also attended by regular examining committee members, along with other censor board officials.
Considering the complexities and concerns around the film, the CBFC appointed a “special panel to add perspective to the final decision of the censor board’s official committee”.
The special panel included Arvind Singh from Udaipur, Chandramani Singh and professor K K Singh of the Jaipur University.
Joshi said, the filmmakers, Bhansali Productions, in a written communication to CBFC, had also requested that a panel of historians/academicians and members of the Rajput community view the film.
He said that this was not the first instance that a special panel was appointed for the certification process as a similar practice was followed while certifying “Jodhaa Akbar” and “Aarkashan”.
“This was an unprecedented and tough situation. I am glad that following a balanced approach we resolved the task at hand in a pragmatic and positive manner,” Joshi said on CBFC’s decision to give the film a UA certificate.
The certificate as per the procedure will be issued once the required modifications are carried out and final material is submitted.
Reacting to the development, founder-patron of Rajput Karni Sena Lokendra Singh Kalvi said a lot of clarifications are yet to come on the issues and it will be too early to comment.
He, however, said his stand is “very clear, which is known to everyone”.
President of Rajput Sabha Giriraj Singh Lotwara said that it was unfortunate that the board wants to favour the film producers instead of considering recommendations of the panel that reviewed the film. He said that he will continue to protest against “Padmavati” in democratic manner.
The film’s final 3D application was submitted on November 28, the CBFC said.
The film got stuck in controversy after various Rajput groups alleged that it distorts history, a claim repeatedly denied by the director.

Deepika Padukone has been applauded for his royal looks and elegance by everyone in ‘Padmavati’ and her co-stars don’t feel any different. Her co-star Shahid Kapoor has said that he feels no one instead of Deepika could have done justice to the role. In an interview, Shahid was all praises for his co-star Deepika and said that she is perfect for ‘Padmavati’. He said, “Deepika’s a great actress. She’s at the top of the game. She’s perfect for Padmavati and we had a great time working with each other. It didn’t feel that we were working together for the first time.” The ‘Haider’ star also praised Sanjay Leela Bhansali for his vision and called him a “mad genius”. “He’s a mad genius, who drains and sucks everything out of you. But you get addicted to him. He’s like a drug. He’s difficult for people who are not ready to work hard. He’s easy for people who want to excel and push themselves. So for me, he’s the easiest person. He won’t let go of you till he’s got what he wants. He won’t sleep well if he hasn’t got what he wanted. And I can relate to those feelings,” noted Kapoor. Meanwhile, Bhansali faced a barrage of questions from a parliamentary panel which asked him if the “selective” media screening of his film was aimed at influencing the CBFC. Various Rajput groups and political leaders have accused Bhansali of distorting history in the movie by using a romantic dream sequence between the Rajput queen Padmini and Sultan Alauddin Khilji, a claim repeatedly denied by the filmmaker. The Times of India : 10th. How Bhansali's 'Padmavati' made way for Amitabh Bachchan's 'Deewar
Originally scheduled to be released today, the film still remains embroiled in controversy. So we watched Deewar instead
LATEST NEWS : On Thursday, a parliamentary panel summoned Padmavati director Sanjay Leela Bhansali and Central Board of Film Certification chief Prasoon Joshi to discuss the ongoing controversy over the film. The members of Parliament — with seemingly little to do after the postponement of the winter session — grilled the hapless director over whether he had distorted history and if he had fuelled the controversies to promote his film. Already, chief ministers of Rajasthan, Gujarat, Madhya Pradesh and Bihar have declared that they will not allow it to be released in their respective states, earning a rap on their wrists from the Supreme Court on Tuesday.
Originally scheduled to be released today (Friday), the future of the film now hangs in uncertainty. Last week, inspired by the claims of some Rajput groups that the 13th-century queen, Padmini, was like their mother, and a fictional depiction of a love affair between her and Alauddin Khilji was somehow an insult to them, I had watched Mother India (1957) — the original film that combined the myths of nationalism and motherhood in post-Independence India. This week, I followed it up with Deewar (1975), released barely a few months before the Emergency started and reflecting its contemporary mood of listlessness and political turmoil.
Like Mother India, the narrative of Deewar, too, revolves around a mother (Nirupa Roy) and her two sons (Amitabh Bachchan and Shashi Kapoor), who find themselves on the opposite sides of the law — but more importantly, engaged in a moral conflict. (Some have even argued that the latter is a remake of the former, albeit in an urban setting.) The family — as the smallest unit of the nation and the economy — is at the centre of the drama and the source of the melodrama in the film. But it is not the ideal family of four: The father, a maligned union leader, is missing; the mother, though not a widow, is the celibate single parent. (Remember the superbly melodramatic scene where Ravi snatches the sindoor out of his mothers hand before telling her about her husband’s death?)
A short detour: Speaking of mothers and sons, one can hardly ignore the most important such relationship in India in the 1970s — that between prime minister Indira Gandhi and Sanjay Gandhi. Indira, Sanjay and Rajiv, in some ways, reflect the mother-and-two-sons structure in the national imagination. But the kind of influence that Sanjay exerted over his mother could be somewhat alarming. One of the more sensational reports that came out during the Emergency was how Sanjay slapped Indira five or six times at a dinner. The person who reported it was then Washington Post India bureau chief and Pulitzer winner Lewis M Simons. In an interview with Scroll.in in 2015, the 40th anniversary of the Emergency, he recollected how the incident had actually occurred before the Indira Gandhi government suspended civil rights in the country. Soon after his report was published, Simons was put on a plane and thrown out of India.

Padmavati parliamentary meeting: BJP seeks a ban while TMC and Congress back film
New Delhi: BJP members sought a ban on Padmavati in the meeting of the parliamentary panel on Thursday. The meeting was called to discuss the Padmavati controversy. Filmmaker Sanjay Leela Bhansali and Central Board of Film Certification (CBFC) chief Prasoon Joshi also attended the meeting. While BJP members sought a ban on the film, Members of Parliament (MPs) from Trinamool Congress and Congress opposed any ban on the film. Padmavati director Bhansali and CBFC chief Joshi were summoned by the parliamentary panel to present their views on the ongoing controversy over the film. BJP MP Anurag Thakur chaired the panel. Thakur wrote in a tweet earlier on Thursday, “Today at 3pm the Parliamentary IT Committee will be examining the subject ‘Film Industry:Problems & Challenges’. Details available on #LokSabha website.” Among other MPs, the panel included actor-politicians Paresh Rawal of BJP, and Raj Babbar of Congress. BJP MP from Chittorgarh, CP Joshi asked, “We have asked for a ban on Padmavati. History has been distorted in this film. The director, Sanjay Leela Bhansali, has presented written documents which say that the film is based on historical facts. Jayasi’s Padmavat was written several centuries after the siege of Chittorgarh took place. Where is the guarantee that that is the truth? Are Padmavati, Raja Ratansen and the Padmini Mahal (that is still there) – all imaginary? The censor board is yet to certify the film but it has passed the song Ghoomar. We have raised objections to that too in this committee.” Om Birla, BJP MP from Kota, echoed his counterpart from Chittorgarh. The chief ministers of Rajasthan, Madhya Pradesh and Gujarat have already declared a ban on Padmavati in their respective states. States like Bihar, Haryana and Uttar Pradesh are waiting for a go-ahead from the censor board first. West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee, however, took the opposite route and announced that she would ensure a smooth release for Padmavati, if the team were to arrange for a premiere in Kolkata. On Tuesday, while striking down a PIL seeking a stay on the release of Padmavati, the Supreme Court pulled up the Centre for comments by people in ‘responsible positions holding public offices’. The court questioned the Centre as to how people holding public offices could ‘make statements on a movie that has not been cleared by the CBFC. Padmavati has been embroiled in a bitter battle with several Hindu groups, with nationwide protests spearheaded by the Shri Rajput Karni Sena. The bone of contention is ‘distortion of history’. Rajput groups think that Bhansali has represented Rajput queen Padmavati in a ‘derogatory manner’, what with Deepika Padukone (who plays the eponymous character in the film) dancing the Ghoomar ‘in front of men’ and a dream sequence of a love scene between Padukone and Ranveer Singh (who plays Turkish invader Alauddin Khilji). Sanjay Leela Bhansali and the team of Padmavati, meanwhile, have clarified time and again that no dream sequence of the kind is part of the film. The film was initially slated for a release on December 1 this year, but it has now been ‘voluntarily deferred’ by the producers. While the Padmavati fire rages on, the CBFC is yet to give a certificate to the controversial film.

Padmavati row: The questions a Parliamentary panel is expected to ask Bhansali, Prasoon Joshi today
Padmavati director Sanjay Leela Bhansali and CBFC chief Prasoon Joshi are expected to meet a Parliamentary panel today.
There have been strong protests against Bhansali's movie Padmavati, which Rajput and Hindu groups say disrespects Rajput history.
"The panel has asked Bhansali and Joshi to appear before it and present their views on the movie. They can present their case before the panel. The members have also decided to call the producers of the movie," chairman of the panel Anurag Thakur was quoted as saying by PTI.
Actors Raj Babbar and Paresh Rawal, who are also MPs, are also part of the panel.
Source said the panel is expected to ask Bhansali the following questions:
-- Is your movie based on fiction or reality?
-- When you were making this particular film, did you have any particular intention to change characters from history?
-- Did u promise any particular group of private citizens that you would show them your movie prior to its release, and did you then decide otherwise?
-- As a filmmaker, do you feel that if a particular community is being sensitive about a few scenes, those scenes can be altered or cut. This is not going to be for the first time that a movie is being altered; then why such resilience?
-- Did you try to reach out to this group on your own when the protests began?
-- There are murmurs that you are not ready for cuts as you feel these protests might help your movie?
-- You are also an Indian. You know how sensitive these things can become. Why don’t you sit with the other side -- if required this committee would recommend to ministers that they should mediate a meeting between you and the protestors. Are you open to the idea?
-- Have you shot any scene relating to any historical character that is obscene in nature?
