Owl Post: The Day the Hogwarts Letters Arrived

7 one shots about each of the Gryffindor '78s receiving their Hogwarts letters. The wizard families are expecting them, the muggleborns are not.

Inspired by a conversation with @jmagnabo92 on Discord about how muggle parents/kids might have reacted to receiving Hogwarts letters. Rejecting the idea of sending your kid there doesn't necessarily constitute being an abusive parent, it could be the mark of a doting, protective, responsible parent!

Here's an excerpt from Chapter 6: Mary MacDonald:

“My name is Albus Dumbledore,” a wizened old man’s voice answered, “I am the Headmaster of a school, and I have an acceptance letter for your daughter Mary Eileen MacDonald. I would like to deliver it to her.”

“There must be some mistake,” Mary’s father’s voice said from the hallway. Mary crept closer. Once she’d heard him say her name, it had piqued her curiosity. She was no longer scared. She didn’t step out into the hallway, but she did lean her head past the wall just far enough that she could see the door. The old man was mostly obscured by Mary’s parents, but she could see long silver hair and deep purple clothes. From where she was standing, it looked like it might be a very big dress. She’d never seen anything like it before.

“There must be some mistake,” Mary’s father insisted, “We haven’t applied for any school for Mary. She’s enrolled in Ellings Primary School and she will be there for the next school year. You must have the wrong person.”

The old man shook his head. He tipped it to the side, just far enough that he could catch Mary’s eye, and winked. Both of her parents turned to look at her; they hadn’t realized that she was visible in the hallway. 

“There is no mistake, I assure you,” the old man said. “If you would be so kind as to pour me a cup of tea, then I can explain the whole story to you. It is rather long, so it may require two cups of tea.”

Hi everyone! I was talking with someone recently about how while the Dursleys' rejection of Harry's Hogwarts letter was cruel, it would be kind of natural for muggleborn parents to reject the idea of Hogwarts without intending any malice. Their kid has a whole life that they're supposed to be uprooted from? You're going to take them away to learn magic? Which they didn't even know was real until the letter arrived?

That conversation inspired me to write all 7 Gryffindor '78s receiving their Hogwarts letters! About half of it is Mary and Lily.

Requests and asks are always open~ unless specified.

It may take me a while to get to your request as they are sent via owls (and often the a creative block or life may cause delay)

I will add more to the characters I take requests for later on, but feel free to send that other character/song request anyway!

I do not take requests based on real people. e.g. I will write for Fred Weasley but not James Phelps.

Please try not to be super specific in your asks as I tend to write better with more freedom to interpret. You can specify what type of reader you want the fic directed at but default will be female. I don’t write male readers but I will do gender neutral.

I will write character x character fics if you ask. If you’re not specific I will assume you mean character x reader.

If I choose to write your request, I’ll reply to it publicly on my blog. If I decide to not write a request or if a request makes me feel uncomfortable enough that I know I won’t write it, I will either reply publicly, privately, or just delete it from my Ask.

If I did reply publicly, I will have sent your request to the kitchen and update how far along I am fairly regularly. Once the fic is finished I will tag you-unless you’re an anon- in the published fic (unless you instruct me not to).

I don’t write the imagines in a specific order. I write based on what inspires me the most, not by who requested first. I do this for fun so please be patient.

Please do not send me a request you’ve sent to or going to send another writer. Let me know in my messages or in the ask if have or plan to. I literally can’t bite. Nor would I. Just message me OFF anon saying “Lestrange please can I know how far along you are on my ask” or “Lestrange you’re taking too long to write my request and I am going to send it to another writer.” (Please read this post about why it’s impolite.)

If your request seems like too much of a repeat of something I’ve already written, I’ll direct you to that imagine instead of trying to rewrite it.
