Further Rit Dye pro-tip: If you have to match a very specific color or only need to sew like one buttonhole and don't want to buy a whole spool, you can just dye pearl cotton!
This fabric has a dull teal warp and a copper-brown weft, which gives it a cool shifting verdigris effect. To get thread to match it, I started with that sky-blue pearl cotton and dyed it teal, then overdyed that with brown. It gives it a similar hue to the fabric and also a lot of depth!

picky picky fellow suffers for his character design choices
#today's art adventure#normal men innocent men very small men#[count from sesame street voice] that is two! TWO yarn stores! ah ha ha ha!#the issue here being that I have Strong opinions about what davie and alan breck look like that does not agree with what yarn stores have#SIGH. what if I dyed my own yarn <- guy who is getting a little desperate#if I lightly overdyed the yarn I used for alison with alcohol ink I could Maybe get a red-toned almost-black?#altho' dunno what I'd do about davie. the closest thing I've found is a little too mushroom and evening it out would need red and yellow#also I don't really think in dye-useful color theory at all... I learned to be good as a digital artist so now I think in cmyk....

dyeing yarn is so much fun :) and i have just enough to finish my cardigan
#crow.txt#i overdyed two separate base colors of some thrifted yarn to get enough in black#and somehow it worked perfectly!#i dyed them two at a time and had one skein left over and turns out i do need it to finish this project so into the dye pot it went#i have some of this yarn that was factory dyed black as well but trying to match it would've been impossible#so i have that saved for another project now which i'm really happy about bc i adore this yarn but it's long discontinued#unfortunately not enough for another cardigan or sweater but i could probably make a vest... much to think about
