Writing Tips - Beating Perfectionism
1. Recognising writing perfectionism. It’s not usually as literal as “This isn’t 100% perfect and so it is the worst thing ever”, in my experience it usually sneaks up more subtly. Things like where you should probably be continuing on but if you don’t figure out how to word this paragraph better it’s just going to bug you the whole time, or where you’re growing demotivated because you don’t know how to describe the scene 100% exactly as you can imagine it in your head, or things along those lines where your desire to be exact can get in the way of progression. In isolated scenarios this is natural, but if it’s regularly and notably impacting your progress then there’s a more pressing issue
2. Write now, edit later. Easier said than done, which always infuriated me until I worked out how it translates into practice; you need to recognise what the purpose of this stage of the writing process is and when editing will hinder you more than help you. Anything up to and including your first draft is purely done for structural and creative purposes, and trying to impose perfection on a creative process will naturally stifle said creativity. Creativity demands the freedom of imperfection
3. Perfection is stagnant. We all know that we have to give our characters flaws and challenges to overcome since, otherwise, there’s no room for growth or conflict or plot, and it ends up being boring and predictable at best - and it’s just the same as your writing. Say you wrote the absolute perfect book; the perfect plot, the perfect characters, the perfect arcs, the perfect ending, etc etc. It’s an overnight bestseller and you’re discussed as a literary great for all time. Everyone, even those outside of your target demographic, call it the perfect book. Not only would that first require you to turn the perfect book into something objective, which is impossible, but it would also mean that you would either never write again, because you can never do better than your perfect book, or you’ll always write the exact same thing in the exact same way to ensure constant perfection. It’s repetitive, it’s boring, and all in all it’s just fearful behaviour meant to protect you from criticism that you aren’t used to, rather than allowing yourself to get acclimated to less than purely positive feedback
4. Faulty comparisons. Comparing your writing to that of a published author’s is great from an analytical perspective, but it can easily just become a case of “Their work is so much better, mine sucks, I’ll never be as good as them or as good as any ‘real’ writer”. You need to remember that you’re comparing a completely finished draft, which likely underwent at least three major edits and could have even had upwards of ten, to wherever it is you’re at. A surprising number of people compare their *first* draft to a finished product, which is insanity when you think of it that way; it seems so obvious from this perspective why your first attempt isn’t as good as their tenth. You also end up comparing your ability to describe the images in your head to their ability to craft a new image in your head; I guarantee you that the image the author came up with isn’t the one their readers have, and they’re kicking themselves for not being able to get it exactly as they themselves imagine it. Only the author knows what image they’re working off of; the readers don’t, and they can imagine their own variation which is just as amazing
5. Up close and too personal. Expanding on the last point, just in general it’s harder to describe something in coherent words than it is to process it when someone else prompts you to do so. You end up frustrated and going over it a gazillion times, even to the point where words don’t even look like words anymore. You’ve got this perfect vision of how the whole story is supposed to go, and when you very understandably can’t flawlessly translate every single minute detail to your satisfaction, it’s demotivating. You’re emotionally attached to this perfect version that can’t ever be fully articulated through any other medium. But on the other hand, when consuming other media that you didn’t have a hand in creating, you’re viewing it with perfectly fresh eyes; you have no ‘perfect ideal’ of how everything is supposed to look and feel and be, so the images the final product conjures up become that idealised version - its no wonder why it always feels like every writer except you can pull off their visions when your writing is the only one you have such rigorous preconceived notions of
6. That’s entertainment. Of course writing can be stressful and draining and frustrating and all other sorts of nasty things, but if overall you can’t say that you ultimately enjoy it, you’re not writing for the right reasons. You’ll never take true pride in your work if it only brings you misery. Take a step back, figure out what you can do to make things more fun for you - or at least less like a chore - and work from there
7. Write for yourself. One of the things that most gets to me when writing is “If this was found and read by someone I know, how would that feel?”, which has lead me on multiple occasions to backtrack and try to be less cringe or less weird or less preachy or whatever else. It’s harder to share your work with people you know whose opinions you care about and whose impressions of you have the potential of shifting based on this - sharing it to strangers whose opinions ultimately don’t matter and who you’ll never have to interact with again is somehow a lot less scary because their judgements won’t stick. But allowing the imaginary opinions of others to dictate not even your finished project, but your unmoderated creative process in general? Nobody is going to see this without your say so; this is not the time to be fussing over how others may perceive your writing. The only opinion that matters at this stage is your own
8. Redirection. Instead of focusing on quality, focusing on quantity has helped me to improve my perfectionism issues; it doesn’t matter if I write twenty paragraphs of complete BS so long as I’ve written twenty paragraphs or something that may or may not be useful later. I can still let myself feel accomplished regardless of quality, and if I later have to throw out whole chapters, so be it
9. That’s a problem for future me. A lot of people have no idea how to edit, or what to look for when they do so, so having a clear idea of what you want to edit by the time the editing session comes around is gonna be a game-changer once you’re supposed to be editing. Save the clear work for when you’re allocating time for it and you’ll have a much easier and more focused start to the editing process. It’ll be more motivating than staring blankly at the intimidating word count, at least
10. The application of applications. If all else fails and you’re still going back to edit what you’ve just wrote in some struggle for the perfect writing, there are apps and websites that you can use that physically prevent you from editing your work until you’re done with it. If nothing else, maybe it can help train you away from major edits as you go

my current glow up goals!
in order to grow and improve it is essential to have clear and easy-to-maintain goals! after a lot of procrastinating thinking i have finally narrowed down my main glow up goals so that i have something tangible to work towards. i have also written down the necessary tasks to accomplish these goals so that i can return to them whenever i feel stuck or demotivated.
1.) appearance and confidence:
one of my biggest glow up goals is to become confident in my appearance! i have never consistently felt good about the way that i look and i know that there are many lovely steps i can take to change this. i want to learn how to love myself and put in the work to show my body and face that i love them! ♥︎
shower + wash hair every morning to start the day off confidently
maintain a skincare routine that works for my skin
save up money to build a wardrobe that i love and feel confident in
learn pilates to improve my core strength and fix my posture
work out 3x a week and get to my preferred weight
put on makeup every day and learn what looks best on me
stretch every morning and night so that my body feels healthy
2.) studying and career:
having a career in something that i adore is absolute essential to me. i would ideally like to manifest financial freedom so that i can spend my days helping people through lifestyle blogging, coaching, and art creation under a trauma-informed/LOA/nondualist lens. i would also love to be a renowned musician who works with my absolute favourite artists in their projects, and be beloved in my music community. my main tasks in this category are studying guitar and piano to become the musician i know that i can be (which will be the "studyblr" part of my blog, and i'm so excited to figure out how i will track my progress with this)! i will also be focusing on manifesting financial abundance so that i can go to school for art therapy, which involves developing proper saving / spending habits until that sweet, sweet windfall of money comes in hehe ♥︎
practice guitar for at least an hour a day to start, and build this up to at least 4 hours a day once my guitar goals are more refined
practice piano for at least an hour a day, working on the same songs i am learning on guitar and working on technique
develop healthy spending habits until i have an abundance of money; focus on repaying my debts and saving for school
find a way to make more money in a way that is super enjoyable for me until i am able to manifest financial freedom
maintain a consistent manifesting routine and self-concept so that i can truly live my dream life and have my dream career!
3.) mental health and wellness:
it is sooo important to me to use my time in ways that are actually fulfilling and enriching. to become my dream girl, i must get rid of mindless activities and replace them with joyful and expansive hobbies and projects. i also must fix my sleep schedule to make sure i am getting enough rest, and learn how to overcome isolation through making new friends and nurturing the ones that i have! ♥︎
replace mindless scrolling with enriching activities and hobbies that i actually enjoy; create a meaningful + exciting list of projects
maintain a consistent sleep schedule and make sure i am getting at least 8 hours of sleep each night until my body adjusts
create a friend group that makes me feel loved and supported; nurture my relationships and nurture myself with socializing
get my drivers license so that i don't have to waste time on public transit anymore!
4.) self concept and self love:
deep down i know that i am worthy of good love, good friends, and an abundance of success and praise. however, it's time that i really internalize those feelings and learn to love myself the way that i deserve by changing my feelings of shame into feelings of love and compassion! ♥︎
journal about my feelings more consistently so that i can work through the shame and guilt spirals that come from RSD
learn more about "parts work" and "internal family systems" so that i can create a lovely library of all my beautiful parts, building them a home that they all feel safe in and where i have easy access to resources when i need them
learn how to be my vibrant and beautiful self around everyone without fear and without compromising my needs, so that i can figure out who i actually enjoy spending time with
continue practicing listening to my body, heart, and mind when something or someone doesn't feel right or safe for me
follow through on my goals and routines and adjust them when necessary so that i can build trust in myself that i can accomplish anything that i put my mind to!
thank you for reading lovely friends, i am so grateful for your encouragement and support and i can't wait to make you proud! hehe. if you have similar goals and want an accountability buddy, please feel free to dm me and we can encourage each other to do our best! love you lots and believe in you so, so much ♥︎

How do you 'find the plot' as it were in a story? You've mentioned a few times hat you tend to start out with stories that are only a few chapters long, but then spiral outwards from there. I feel like I have the opposite problem - I come up with character concepts, worlds, etc. but everything fizzles out after a few chapters. It's not that I'm not passionate about the worlds or the characters I build, I just... feel like they have nowhere to go. Any tips/tricks/advice for when this happens?
Hi anon!
So everyone does these things a bit differently. What I do might not work for you! So keep that in mind if I describe something that makes you feel demotivated or uninspired, it probably means it just isn't the right technique for you!
Now to break things down:
Even if I'm only starting out with a few chapters, I usually know where I'm heading. Which is almost always - when it's not straight up PWP - a romance.
Romances by default need to have a HEA (Happily Ever After) or HFN (Happy For Now / Hopeful For Now). That HEA/HFN must feature the two main romantic leads (unless you're writing OT3 or whatever). It's not 'happy but one of them died.' It's 'happy but both of them are end-game.' No matter how long my story is, that is always the end-game, and that never changes.
So you already know where you're going. No matter what. The story is internalised, the rules are firm. You break that rule, it's not a romance anymore. It's something else with a romantic storyline in it.
Generally speaking anon, if you target certain genres or character arcs, you will always know exactly where you're headed - it's your Polestar, your True North - even if you don't know exactly what it looks like yet because you haven't been there before, you know that everything in that story either has to work to get your characters closer to that end-point, or it works against that end-point in a way that will have to be overcome.
And then from there, that is where all my stories gain their shape, even if I don't plot anything. Because even though I write a lot of different genres, the romance is always at the heart of it for me. Or more accurately, it's always the compass point. Even when the romance isn't that important. Eran and Mosk's romance absolutely took a back seat in The Ice Plague, but their happiness was still the end point. I always knew where I was heading.
In amongst your worldbuilding and character building anon, I would say you need to do more concrete work on understanding the genres, and then applying one or more to your own work. I feel like you've put everything in your backpack except for the compass, and then get surprised when you lose your way.
It doesn't matter how good your map is, if you don't have a compass to read it with.
Think of the map as your worldbuilding and character building, then think of the genres and the tropes as your compass.
Go hunting for the compass alongside the map, otherwise you just end up with a map that's unworkable no matter what direction you turn it in. It looks like it has all the information you need, but it actually doesn't, because a map on its own isn't enough. (Even Google Maps uses a compass salkjfads).
When you lose your way, it can help to think of your favourite examples of the genre/s you're writing, and how motivating those endings or conflict points were in the story. It can help to revisit the genre/s themselves. For example if you're writing upbeat action/adventure, you want relatively fast pacing and some explosive moments. If you're writing grimdark, you're going to have to kill off some of your (and everyone else's) faves.
Learn about genre/s, about trope/s, the deeper you go, the more of a story scaffold you'll have as the skeleton beneath all the flesh you put on the story. Without that backbone, without that compass, it will all fall apart.
I am fortunate in the sense that I've been studying story structures what feels like all my life. From the very basic story structures of Grimm's and HCA's fairy tales, to literally studying it at university in scriptwriting and film and creative writing. So my compass is within me, and I don't have to research it in the same way anymore.
But I loved every moment of building my compass, and I hope you enjoy building yours too, anon. Since you already enjoy the worldbuilding and the characterisation, it's the last thing you need in your backpack to keep a story going and know where you're headed. Because your genre is always pretty clear, for the most part, and when the genre isn't, the tropes will be.
#asks and answers#pia on writing#the map and the compass#i say 'i don't plan'#but there is a pre-plan that exists#the HEA of the Romance is a mandate#no matter what i do#that is where i will always end up#administrator gwyn wants this in the queue

I'm so sorry it's me again!
Just a quick one, if you don't mind, I do really enjoy creative writing myself, and I've currently got a few ideas in the works.
However I always get horrendous writers block, and constantly feel demotivated. Did you ever get that with your writing, and if so, how did you overcome it?
Any tips would be greatly appreciated, being introduced to your work has made me think about (metaphorically) picking up the pen again!
Thank you so much, and have an amazing day 😊
Hello! Don't apologize!!
This is extremely dramatic but when I get demotivated, I remind myself that I'm going to die or that I'm extremely privileged to be able to write at all (I have the cognitive ability to, I own a laptop, both my hands are capable of typing, and so on). Reminding myself about dying usually helps because I'm really committed to leaving stories behind for my loved ones. I tend to think of my writing like building a house for family/friends for when I'm gone: some days, I'm going to have to work in the rain or in the heat, and other days I'm going to be sore all over, but if I want it done, then I have to get up and get to work. Very mexican way i've been raised, i fear, but it works.
Here is another thing, especially if you're still starting out: Do small projects. short stories, shorter books with simple premises and a small cast of characters. do not write the epics you have in your head yet. You can't run a marathon on your first try, or you shouldn't.
For writers block, I also think it always helps to return to your original inspirations and find new ones. recently i found myself a little lost on a chapter, so i went back and listened to one of the soundtracks that inspired abm, and it helped out a ton :)

Q: How do you keep the motivation to work on all your long comics? I always start and then abandon a project cause another distracts me or I feel unsatisfied with the result... I admire your commitment so much!
===
Aw, thank you! I really appreciate it. But don’t get too discouraged.. I get distracted too! I currently have 9 ongoing comic projects with 2 more i eagerly want to start drawing, and at least a dozen concepts on the backburner that have been around for sometimes over a decade. I think that what I’ve found, is that starting a new comic takes so much time. It takes a lot of time to get a story really rolling, time to learn how to draw the story how you want and in a weird way - having a longer comic you’ve had more experience with, you can pull a lot more things from. I generally find that FFAK and NRD are much easier comics for me to work on because of all those years of experience with them. But it still can get demoralizing if i focus too much on the faults or how long I still have to go. Sometimes its easy to feel that readers have lost interest and moved on, or its just not as good as you wanted it to be, ect. If you look for reasons like that, reasons to demotivate you, you’ll find them in spades. So i try my best to NOT do that, because working on a comic is hard enough.
In a weird way, when i sometimes find myself in the pit of struggles like this - i realize every author ive ever read has been in the same shoes as me. There is no artist that just magically has it easier and never runs into some challenges like this, some challenges can never be overcome because they’re part of the experience of making the project. There’s limitations involved and things change overtime. You won’t always have the same experience with the same story as you make it, or the same feelings involved. Sometimes that's really hard to let go of, if you feel the earlier years were so much better than the struggles you have now. I know I faced that hurdle with FFAK and I am currently going through that with NRD, but even the harder times do change too. It never gets easy to make a comic, but it changes.
With FFAK, i don’t honestly know how I will finish the complete story. I often struggle too, especially with the third (final) arc, if it really is good enough. In a way, a lot of places of it feel incomplete and rushed, so I tend to worry a lot about how that will go. However, I never thought i’d have a comic like FFAK in the first place, so i feel really lucky to have made it this far at all. Endings do scare me, as there’s just so much pressure involved to deliver and even reach it at all, that it feels almost like an impossible fantasy to pull off in a satisfying manner to yourself or the readers. However, I do think I’ve gotten more excited to reach endings than I used to be even a couple years ago, and I have gotten more forgiving of myself for not being perfect at it. No matter what I manage to make, I’m going to have my own critiques of it because there’s improvements to be made in all aspects of the story. I’m looking forward to seeing what I can actually do so I can learn from it and be more confident in the future.
FFAK also has such a huge cast, it can be a technical nightmare to figure out. I dont envy authors like GRRM that have a seemingly endless cast to deal with. I already have so much of my hands full with what is essentially one family. And I know for my other comics that I’ve made, the cast has never gotten as out of hand as FFAK’s. But I dont mind having FFAK be like this, because it has been part of my enjoyment of writing the story too. FFAK is generally very motivating because I always have something I’m excited to share about it, and every small progress is a big reward for me. I’ve put a lot of years of work into ARC2 and i am desperate to get to share it with everyone, so I hope readers will enjoy what is to come for the future of the story even though it already is a decade old at this point.

Sparking Your Writing Fire
2 Days Till Grand Opening Giveaway!
Every writer, from beginners to seasoned authors, occasionally faces a slump in motivation. Writing is a journey filled with highs of creativity and lows of stagnation. The key to consistent writing lies in finding ways to ignite and sustain your motivation. Here, we explore practical and inspirational tips to help you rekindle your passion for writing. Understanding the Roots of Demotivation: Before diving into solutions, it’s crucial to understand what’s dampening your motivation. Is it fear of failure, lack of inspiration, or external pressures? Identifying the root cause is the first step in overcoming it.
1. Set Achievable Goals:
Start Small: Set small, achievable writing goals. It can be as simple as writing a paragraph or brainstorming ideas for ten minutes.
Gradual Increase: Gradually increase your writing time or word count goals as you gain momentum.
2. Create a Writing Ritual:
Routine: Establish a writing routine. It could be a specific time of day, a certain playlist, or a preferred writing spot.
Environment: Ensure your writing environment is conducive to creativity. It should be comfortable, distraction-free, and inspiring.
3. Seek Inspiration:
Read Widely: Reading other authors can spark ideas and motivate you to write.
Life Experiences: Draw inspiration from your experiences, travels, conversations, and even daydreams.
4. Join Writing Communities:
Support Systems: Engage with local or online writing groups. Sharing your work and receiving feedback can be incredibly motivating.
Accountability: Having a group or a writing buddy can create a sense of accountability, which can drive you to write.
5. Embrace Imperfection:
First Drafts: Remember that first drafts are not meant to be perfect. They’re just the beginning.
Editing: Understand that the editing phase is where you refine and polish your work.
6. Reward Yourself:
Small Rewards: Give yourself small rewards for meeting writing goals. It could be a favorite snack, an episode of a show, or a relaxing walk.
Celebrating Milestones: Celebrate bigger milestones like completing a chapter or submitting to a publisher.
7. Continuous Learning:
Writing Workshops: Attend workshops or webinars to learn new writing techniques and styles.
Books on Writing: Read books about writing. Learning from others’ experiences can be enlightening and inspiring.
8. Reflect and Reassess:
Reflect: Regularly reflect on your writing journey. What have you learned? How have you grown?
Adjust Goals: Don’t hesitate to adjust your goals and methods to better suit your evolving writing process.
Conclusion: Motivation to write isn’t a constant; it ebbs and flows. By setting realistic goals, creating a supportive writing environment, and embracing the imperfections of the creative process, you can reignite your passion for writing. Remember, every word you write is a step forward in your journey as a writer. Embrace the process, and let your motivation be fueled by your love for storytelling.
Happy Writing :)

I have like 10 drafts ranting about the same thing, but like… too ranty. Let’s summarize.
Uh… hey other artists lol… how do y’all like… overcome a horrible sense of doom every time you think of doing art. I think this stems from a personal issue, but like… just checking if anyone else feels the same! ^_^
Like, do you ever get really demotivated when you are even thinking of doing art? Like, so demotivated your brain just shits itself?
How do you, like, overcome that? How do you get past that dread and just work. Some days, I feel like I would rather do anything BUT art… it’s exhausting, because I know for a fact work needs to be done, but I just can’t do it…
Also… do y’all have any like, good study tips for a former “gifted kid” who never learned how to study? I kinda just… breezed though my school years without studying, and now the breeze has slammed me into a brick wall lol.
You can tell I’m from california based on how many likes I just used.
#PLEASE HELP ME#HELP HELP HELP HELP HELPPPPPP#I DON’T NEED A SAVIOUR I NEED FUCKING GOD#art#is this normal#is this normal for beginner artists#i’m gonna cry#art is like my only hobby and my only source of stability#but everything is fine!#I’M FINE!#GAMEYFACE46 IS DOING FINE!!!!!!!!

I have a good sign that now you should focus on your mind rather than your heart so I think you have your answer from the beginning but we are going to continue to see if there are other messages for you. Now is a good time for you to focus on work and study my dear. You are dealing with some difficulties with a teacher/boss/mentor but there is growth and expansion ahead so keep doing your work. It is a good time to try and be wise and try to discern what is better for you right now. There are some unseen changes ahead especially if you are going with the spiritual law. Listen to your intuition and don't try anything sneaky because karma can hit you later. Now is a good time for privacy and incubation. Keep all your plans secret and follow your intuition. Also, this is a period when you should have some significant dreams so be on guard when it comes to them, you can get some important messages through them. If you are feeling stuck and you have found the same thing over and over again just let past things go, now is the time to try something new. Success is coming on your road but there needs to be some time to nurture and work for your dreams so you just need to be patient and keep on working for your ideas. Your goals will be reached and you will have a breakthrough. Monday Blues: How to Overcome the Dreaded Start of the Week Shaina Tranquilino January 15, 2024
We've all experienced it—the sinking feeling as Sunday evening draws to a close, and Monday morning looms ahead. The "Monday Blues" is that overwhelming sense of dread and lack of motivation we often feel at the start of each week. It's a phenomenon that affects countless individuals across the globe, but fear not! There are several ways you can combat those Monday Blues and set yourself up for a successful week. 1. Plan Ahead: One effective strategy to tackle Monday Blues is to plan your week in advance. Take some time on Sunday evening to write down your goals, tasks, and priorities for the upcoming days. When you have a clear roadmap in front of you, it becomes easier to focus and take action rather than being overwhelmed by the chaos of an unplanned week.
2. Create a Positive Morning Routine: Start your day off right with a positive morning routine that energizes and uplifts you. This could include activities like meditation, exercise, or simply enjoying a cup of coffee while reading something inspiring. By dedicating time to self-care before diving into work, you'll set a positive tone for the rest of the day.
3. Set Realistic Goals: It's easy to get caught up in an idealistic vision of how productive we should be on Mondays. However, setting unrealistic expectations only leads to disappointment and further demotivation. Instead, break down your tasks into manageable chunks and prioritize what needs immediate attention. Celebrate small victories along the way—this will keep you motivated throughout the day.
4. Embrace Positivity: Maintaining a positive mindset is crucial when combating the Monday Blues. Surround yourself with positivity by listening to uplifting music or podcasts during your commute or engaging in conversations with colleagues about exciting projects or personal achievements. Focusing on positives can help shift your perspective from dreading Mondays to embracing new opportunities.
5. Take Breaks: Recognize the importance of taking regular breaks throughout the day. Stepping away from your desk, even for a few minutes, can help recharge your energy and maintain focus. Use these breaks as an opportunity to stretch, take a walk outside, or engage in a brief conversation with colleagues.
6. Practice Gratitude: Sometimes, all it takes is a change in perspective to overcome the Monday Blues. Cultivating gratitude by reflecting on the positive aspects of your life can shift your mindset from one of negativity to appreciation. Consider starting a gratitude journal where you jot down things you are grateful for each day—this simple practice can have a profound impact on your overall outlook.
7. Connect with Colleagues: Building positive relationships in the workplace can significantly elevate your mood on Mondays and beyond. Reach out to colleagues, ask how their weekends were, and engage in conversations that foster connection and camaraderie. Knowing that you're not alone in experiencing Monday Blues can be comforting and motivate you to tackle the week together.
Remember, Monday Blues are temporary! By implementing these strategies consistently, you'll find yourself dealing with them less frequently over time. Embrace Mondays as an opportunity for growth, learning, and new beginnings—the start of an exciting journey toward achieving your goals!

OC Lore ~ Julie Eilert
Well I did say I'd try and do these on this site again, but I haven't really felt like it. But I'm up for it now!
Now would be a good time as any to lead on with my premiere OC, Julie. Anyone who knows me at least slightly will have seen her somewhere. She is my favorite and means very much to me in general.
Pretty much most of what I covered on my Twitter thread will be done likewise here. A lot of it will be rambly, but that's just how I am.
I had just gotten interested in Fire Emblem after FE7's North American release and began working my way backwards in the series, very quickly endearing me to the franchise. Instinctively I wanted to tell my own story with an FE framework and got to work making a bunch of characters.
Julie and her older brother Josh were the first, styled after Eirika and Ephraim a little bit as Sacred Stones just released in Japan. I was a burgeoning spriter and made some of my first splices into their likeness. Julie's future as an eventual spellblade began here as well.
(FE4 and 5 had a pretty tight grip on me in 2005)
I wrote a number of drafts of the story I wanted to tell, with Julie comfortably sitting as one of three central protagonists, each having a separate route until they all converged midway. This was the first draft of what eventually became my FE8 reskin ROM Hack: FE A Sacred Dawn. Julie and Josh slid into the protagonist roles there.
I wanted to have a Dancer Lord for one of the three protagonists and Julie was the perfect choice. She was set as a young, cheerful and adventurous, but naïve everygirl. Her core look started taking shape as I drew and sprited her more in various different looks. She was a common drawing subject for me back in high school and one of the first subjects I wanted to try and draw when I made the jump to using GIMP as my art program of choice.
During A Sacred Dawn's third draft, a theme I wanted to explore with Julie and her character development were her insecurities. Being thrown into a conflict at an early age, she has trouble coping and has nightmares involving being badgered by her darker emotions given form - "Nega Julie". Unfortunately, the draft never made it past the first few maps due to me getting seriously burnt out and demotivated, so this facet of her character was only minorly explored. I did keep the idea for further refinement of Julie's character though, to the point where her darker half can be considered a separate character. But I still need to draw her on day...
Julie and Josh were originally written as my self-insert character's children with FE5's Linoan (long story) during the early days of my ROM hacking (even sharing my surname) but eventually she would end up having a new mother character, an old standby of mine name Megan. She was initially written to have been killed off during Julie's youth, with the Eilert kids being orphans, but I eventually hated that trope being used in Fire Emblem all the time, so I brought Megan back and gave her a new father character as well - Blythe Eilert, who inherited my artistic traits and a few other bits.
Julie's looks kept getting refined over time. She lost her "Myrmidon" headband, but otherwise her design remained steadily consistent between iterations. Her magical sword Thunderblade was renamed to "Fulminus".
Though I never ended up finishing ASD (not even close!) I still wanted to tell that story and lore one day, so I refined it into an original setting with the help of my best friend. I insisted that Julie become the center protagonist of said story we were writing, due to my attachment to her and wanting to draw out her potential. She'd share the role with Josh and their mutual best friend, Ruby Emina, as they bond over the troubles provided by the world at large.
Julie continues to deal with nightmares from all of the fighting she has to do and develops plenty of fears, but halfway through this story she ends up overcoming "Nega Julie" and the fears that plague her mindscape and heart, attaining a renewed perspective on life. To boost her self-confidence, Ruby gives her a new "Dancemaiden" outfit, which is basically a fancy dancer's dress meant for performance.
As this essentially serves as a Fire Emblem-style class change, I wanted to contrast this look with her normal green and yellow outfit. I eventually settled on black (to signify her accepting her darker self) and sky blue (to signify her purity). The hairband she used to wear returns as a normal hairband to give the look a bit more girliness. As this is primarily a performance outfit, she has kneepads to help ensure they're not scuffed during a fight or a botched performance. Even comes complete with a dancing ribbon, later affixed to her arm!
I'm still writing this story and it's a very slow process but I would love to be able to share this other people one day as a game and tell Julie's story for real. I have not lost that passion, and I would do anything to make that dream a reality one day. Drawing and refining her over these past few years has been wonderful, to the point where I've finally hit the point where I feel she's fully realized from what I envisioned her as years ago.
Here's Julie in her casual clothes, what she wears at the very start of her story and what reflects her at her core - a typical downtown farmgirl who wants to smile and make friends. The first one of these was done when I just got a feel for drawing realistic proportions. These last two I just finished!

The Road to Success is Paved with Challenges: How IAS Aspirants Overcome Failure
The journey into the Indian Administrative Service or IAS is never easy for any aspirant. The challenge lies in extremely fierce competition, inexhaustible study material, and the high stakes one faces. Only a few of thousands who attempt this prestigious exam can clear it in the first attempt. Failure could be very discouraging, but it is one of the best teachers when it comes to a success path. For aspirants who are studying in the best IAS academy in Coimbatore, there is a huge need to understand how to move beyond setbacks in order to eventually achieve goals. Here's the look at how failure plays a transformative role and how, properly guided and mentally aligned, any setback can be a stepping stone to success.
Understanding the Role of Failure in the IAS Journey Failure is always considered opposite to success, but, actually, it happens to be a necessary part of any successful journey. In IAS preparation, when the syllabus is spread on a number of subjects and is depth-based, failure can be considered as a kind of feedback mechanism that shows up areas in which improvement is needed. When a candidate faces failure, this also forces him or her to recollect methods and work upon weaknesses. It is a significant self-reflection process and improvement, and the most prestigious IAS academy in Coimbatore would emphasize this only because a strong foundation is often a product of early errors.
Let's take the case of Ramesh who was an IAS aspirant. He had failed twice before he finally succeeded. Initially, he was disillusioned and did not know what course of action to take next. However, reviewing his approach and working with the mistakes he had made showed that he planned too stiffly without a space for being flexible and regular assessment. He revised his plan, started including daily quizzes, and found a study routine that was sustainable in the long run. Such a story is but one of thousands showing that failure, when handled correctly, becomes an invaluable lesson rather than defeat.
Key Challenges in the IAS Preparation The IAS journey, in itself, is replete with several challenges that test the resolve, patience, and endurance level of every aspirant. Some of the key ones include the following: .
The Humongous Syllabus The IAS exam syllabus will cover an entire galaxy of topics, ranging from history and economics to science, and the latest current affairs. It is almost effortless to become intimidated by the sheer scale of material. For most aspirants who juggle between studies and work or some other commitments, it becomes an overwhelming task to handle the syllabus.
Intense Competition With lakhs of students attempting the exam every year, it becomes fierce competition. It is not merely about knowing the subject well; it is more about acing the pressure of the examination as well. The level is high, and when people are being compared constantly, the factor of demotivation comes into play.
Consistency and Discipline The IAS preparation requires a lot of effort over time. It gets difficult to maintain the motive day in and day out, mainly after an unsuccessful attempt. The best IAS academy in Coimbatore makes it so for students by having properly scheduled schedules and constant progress assessment.
Mental Pressure and Anxiety In fact, the mental and emotional challenges of handling IAS preparation are much more daunting than the scholastic one. Several attempts could make you stressful and it engulfs a sense of fear of failure and puts pressure to successfully pass on and will give way to burnout if you are not careful with proper management.
How Aspirants can overcome failure in IAS To transform failure into success, IAS aspirants must acquire some strategies and mindset that promote progress and strength. Some of the ways to overcome setbacks follow:
Analyze and Adapt The most important thing after failure is to see what all went wrong. This could be discussing one's study plan, identifying the weak areas, or even reassessing the exam techniques. With the best IAS academy in Coimbatore, students could find time for adjusting some unique challenges and strengths.
Follow the Fundamentals The most crucial aspect for being successful in an IAS exam is a great grasp over the basic concepts. Failure usually indicates where the comprehension of an aspirant is weak. It's where one needs to go back to the basics and fortify foundational knowledge. Most successful candidates have reported that strengthening their basic subjects improved their approach to answering questions without undue fear in the exam.
Search for Mentorship and Help Mentorship plays a key role in IAS. Highly experienced mentors can provide valuable insights and practical tips besides emotional support. An excellent IAS academy in Coimbatore ensures that the students are being properly mentored, stay motivated, and ready even after setbacks.
Develop a Growth Mindset View failure not as the final judgment but as a stepping stone for growth. It requires one to accept that ability can be built through effort and learning. A mindset that emphasizes growth increases the likelihood of persistence and resilience and orients the search towards improvement.
Maintain a Healthy Routine This often leads the aspirant to totally neglect physical and mental health, which happens to them because of their excess focus on studies. A balanced routine involves sufficient sleep, exercise, and relaxation to really boost productivity and reduce stress. Taking care of one's health is important to keep a focused mind with an enduring motivation.
Practice with Mock Tests and Self-Assessment Mock tests guide aspirants to practice real exam conditions and, hence, assist aspirants in identifying weak areas. Most academies conduct mock tests as per the pattern of the IAS exam, and this enables a student to tackle the actual test with confidence. Detailed review of such tests ensures that aspirants fine-tune their strategy and approach the exam with a well-formulated plan in mind.
Success Stories: How Failure Led to Success for IAS Toppers Success stories of IAS toppers will always include incidents that went wrong for these achievers but marked the turning point in their processes. Many candidates fail in one or more subjects but eventually clear the examination based on a better reconsideration of their strategy. They take failure as an opportunity to gain insight about the examination, refine their approach, and come out stronger.
Success stories about these toppers must be inspiring the students of these top IAS academies in Coimbatore. Most of the toppers did not clear the IAS exam for the first time. They built resilience while improving their strategies each time and getting on to the venture with renewed energy.
Conclusion Becoming an IAS officer is certainly not a smooth journey. Failures and setbacks are the givens; however, they must not be the end results. With each setback comes an opportunity to grow stronger, learn from mistakes, and consolidate oneself's resolve. The right mindset, effective strategies, and mentorship from the best IAS academy in Coimbatore would convert every failure into a stepping stone towards success.
If you want to make a difference in the world of civil services, don't forget that success doesn't tell about the number of times you fall; instead, it explains how many times you get up. So embrace the journey, seek help when it is necessary, and then stride according to your desired goals. Let's begin your IAS today, and help bring your dreams into reality.

The Pros and Cons of Implementing Employee Monitoring Software – Handdy

To decide whether you should implement employee monitoring software at your organization, it’s important that you weigh up the pros and cons of employee monitoring in the workplace.
Let’s discuss some of the key benefits of monitoring your remote team with the help of an employee monitoring software.
Pros of employee monitoring to your business:
Implementing employee monitoring software helps you overcome the most common challenges that businesses face in today’s work environment. Listed below are a few of them;
1. Eliminate insider threats: Data security issues doesn’t have to always be a malware attack – sometimes it can originate from within the organization itself. Implementing employee monitoring software helps you address such insider threats. You get to see the applications used, websites visited and screen shots of employee computer activity in real-time. You can always go back, analyze data and look for warning signs/indicators of suspicious activity and address them well in advance.
2. Know your employee computer activity: Employee monitoring software gives you a detailed report of your employee computer activity during work hours. It gives you a clear insight of their work pattern and helps you understand if your company device or network is being used appropriately.
3. Stay on top of your employee productivity: Implementing employee monitoring software helps you analyze individual employee performance - backed by accurate data and reports. These time stamped reports help you analyze work patterns, eliminate guesswork and provide feedback where it is required.
4. Hassle free project reporting: Employee monitoring software helps you with accurate timesheet reports for your entire team or for an individual employee. These reports can be used to analyze the most time-consuming projects/tasks or can be used as timesheets for client reporting purposes.
5. Reduced HR/admin workload: Employee monitoring software automatically tracks and records employee time and attendance. By this way, you can reduce HR or admin workload in attendance and payroll management.
6. Maintain your corporate values: Implementing employee monitoring and productivity software motivates your employees to make proper use of time. Employees tend to be punctual during clock-in/clock-out and be more efficient at work – when they realize they are being monitored.
Cons of employee monitoring that you should be aware of:
Though employee monitoring brings a whole lot of benefits for businesses and employees, it is not without its challenges. Staying aware of these downsides will help you address employee privacy concerns in the workplace.
1. Develops lack of trust: When employees know that they are being monitored, they might assume that you do not trust them. They may develop a sense of being micromanaged and get demotivated resulting in poor performance.
Solution: Educate your employees on the need to implement employee monitoring software. Let them know that they are not being targeted, instead each and every employee in the organization will be monitored.
2. Employee privacy concerns: Some employees feel uncomfortable when their computer activity is being monitored. They perceive it as an invasion of privacy or assume they are being micromanaged.
Solution: Let your employees know why their computer activity is being monitored. Give them the assurance that they will be monitored only during work hours and only while using company assets.
3. Reduces employee morale: This applies for employees who have been with you for a very long time. When they are subjected to monitoring for the first time, it de-motivates them and reduces their morale in the workplace.
Solution: Talk to your senior employees and let them know how happy you are about their deliverables, commitment and dedication. Make them understand their responsibility in setting examples and helping junior team members adhere to company policies.
Is employee monitoring right for your business?
Employee monitoring software is no more a choice, but a necessity for businesses in today’s modern workplace. October-Activity 1
On 12.10.2024 I went to the gym to work on my goal. I started my training by walking uphill on a treadmill for 15 minutes to boost my cardiovascular activity.
I then moved on to core training:
3x20 in and outs
3x20 seated leg lifts
3x20 toe taps
3x20 dead bugs
After the core workout I finally got to directly work on achieving my goal. For my leg workout I’ve done:
4x15 outwards abduction 30kg
4x15 inwards abduction 30kg
3x15 leg curls 25kg
3x15 leg extensions 25kg
I finished my workout with 30 minutes of walking uphill on the treadmill to train my stamina and motivate my body to burn fat.
Reflection
Staying motivated is a thing that I often struggle with and being committed to working out made me find ways to keep myself motivated.
A difficulty with working out is that the effects of my efforts will not be immediately visible, however I try to not let this demotivate me.
One of the things that keep me motivated is my best friend, with who I train every week. We both motivate and support each other in achieving our goals. Working out together also makes the activity fun rather than being just a chore.
Overall, I still experience difficulties with staying motivated but I’m slowly learning how to overcome it through the process.
