Disclaimer: none of these answers are official, and may not work for your particular use case. If there is a specific feature that an unofficial app had that you don't know how to replicate on the AO3, let me know in the notes and we might can crowdsource a solution.
A lot of people used the Archive Reader app to access stories on Archive of Our Own, and have been upset that the app is now charging to read longer than an hour a day. AO3 (and its parent organization, the OTW) has made it extremely clear in recent days that this app is unofficial and that there *is* no official app. They encourage people to use the website.
However, there are MANY reasons you might want an app, and in a bunch of those cases, there are ways to do those things without having to provide your login information to a random person running an app. Here is a round-up of solutions to the most common reasons I've seen people give for wanting an app instead of the plain AO3 website.
These solutions are based on the following assumptions:
You know what Archive of Our Own is
You often or primarily access it through a mobile device running iOS or Android
You understand what a browser is
You understand what a browser bookmark is
You understand what a site skin is
Edits:
Edited to clarify that you must be logged in to use custom site skins
Edited to add more tips and tricks from the reblogs
Edited to add new entry about notifications/emails
Edited to add new entry about reading statistics and the tracking thereof
I need a widget on my phone's homescreen, not just a browser bookmark.
You can do this with any website, not just AO3! Instructions here: https://www.howtogeek.com/196087/how-to-add-websites-to-the-home-screen-on-any-smartphone-or-tablet/
I need Dark Mode.
AO3 has a default site skin for Dark Mode, it's just called Reversi. Find it here, or at the bottom of any page on the website. https://archiveofourown.org/skins/929/
If you'd like Dark Mode on your whole browser (and you're on Android), sorrelchestnut has advice here: https://www.tumblr.com/sorrelchestnut/737869282153775104/if-you-want-dark-mode-and-dont-want-to-mess
I need to be able to read stories when I don't have internet.
Every work on the AO3 has a download button, so you can click on that and download the story for offline reading in the ereader app of your choice. More info on how to do that is in the AO3 FAQs: https://archiveofourown.org/faq/downloading-fanworks?language_id=en#accesslater
I need to be able to change the text size of the website itself.
If you have an AO3 account (and you should!!) you can do this with a personalized site skin! There is a simple tutorial here: https://www.tumblr.com/ao3skin/667284237718798336/i-have-a-request-if-you-dont-mind-could-you
I need to be able to change the text size in downloaded stories.
My personal recommendation: Don't download in PDF format. All the other formats you can download in can scale the text size up and down, assuming you open the work in the correct app. For me, I download works in EPUB format and read them on the built-in Books app on my iPhone. I hear good things about Moon Reader on Android as well.
I need to be able to replace Y/N in fics with an actual name.
ElectricAlice has a bookmarklet for that here: https://archiveofourown.org/works/34796935
I need to be able to save specific tags and not have to search them up every time.
If you have an AO3 account (which you definitely should) then you can favorite up to 20 tags which will appear on the landing page. The AO3 FAQ explains how that works: https://archiveofourown.org/faq/tags?language_id=en#favtag
I need to be able to save specific filters and be able to apply them to any tag.
Reisling's beautiful bookmarklet has you covered: https://archiveofourown.org/works/33825019
I need to be able to permanently hide certain tags.
The best option is adding this to your site skin. (Must be logged in.) Instructions here: https://www.tumblr.com/ao3css/719667033634160640/how-to-permanently-filter-out-certain-tags-on-ao3
I also hear things about the AO3 Enhancements extension (just for Android/desktop, sorry iOS folks): https://www.tumblr.com/emotionalsupportrats/686787582579851265/browser-extension-everyone-on-ao3-should-know
I need it to save my place on the page and not reload.
This is really mostly a browser error--Firefox on iOS does this to me A LOT. Your best bet is to download the work and read it in an ereader app. A lot of people also will make an ao3 bookmark and write in the notes section which part they were at, but that assumes you aren't falling asleep while reading. (Which is the main reason I have this issue, lol.) For more info on bookmarks, see the FAQ: https://archiveofourown.org/faq/bookmarks?language_id=en#whatisbookmark
I need it to keep track of which stories I've already read/opened/kudos'd.
If you have an account (which you should) then the "My History" page keeps track of every fic you've ever clicked on. No, it isn't searchable or sortable, but it does exist. For fics you've kudos'd, I have yet to find a solution for iOS. For desktop or Android, you can use this excellent userscript: https://greasyfork.org/en/scripts/5835-ao3-kudosed-and-seen-history
@the-sleepy-archivist and @inkandarsenic have a solution for iOS here to use userscripts: https://www.tumblr.com/the-sleepy-archivist/737895174683885568/this-is-a-great-guide-one-thing-i-can-help-with and https://www.tumblr.com/inkandarsenic/737827438571192320/the-user-scripts-will-also-work-on-ios-there-are
I need an app because the website's search is terrible.
(I genuinely don't understand this one but I have seen it multiple times so on the list it goes!!) The search bar at the top of the screen is a keyword search. If you'd rather search within a specific field (like title or tag) then you'll want to click on the word "search" at the top of the screen and select Work Search or Tag Search. To search users, use People Search. To search Bookmarks, use Bookmark Search. (If this is you, please tell me what the heck you mean by "search is bad" and how an app helped with this.)
I need to be able to sort stories by date posted/number of bookmarks/alphabetical/etc.
You can do this using the filters sidebar. Pick a tag you want to filter on (like a fandom, character, or relationship) and then click on the "Filters" button. The sidebar will pop out and you can sort and filter on a boggling array of specifics. A good filtering guide: https://www.tumblr.com/saurons-pr-department/718665516093472768/if-there-is-something-you-dont-want-to-see-in
I need to be able to mark stories to read later.
AO3 has this feature built in! If you have an account (which you should) there is a "Mark for Later" option on every work.
Edit: Thispersonishuman reminded me that History and Mark For Later can be disabled, so if you're not seeing the Mark for Later option, check your settings.
I need to be able to listen to stories using text-to-speech.
Microsoft Edge web browser has a built in text to speech function. Supposedly it works on both iOS and Android, but I have not personally tested that. iOS also has a native accessibility feature in settings for text to speech that will work on the Books app, so I assume Android has a similar functionality. A bunch of people in the reblogs have more in-depth Android recommendations here: https://www.tumblr.com/protect-namine/737957194510794752/seconding-voice-aloud-on-android-for-tts-my, https://www.tumblr.com/smallercommand/737884523093704704/i-use-voice-for-tts-on-android-its-got-some, and https://www.tumblr.com/doitninetimes/737869463749263360/for-text-to-speech-on-android-you-can-also-check
I need to have in-app notifications for updates/I can't ever find story updates in among the rest of my emails/checking my email stresses me out.
Set up a separate email address using a free service like gmail, and use that email address JUST for AO3. Then the only emails in that inbox will be your story updates. I use Apple's Mail application for all my inboxes, but it's very easy to use the Gmail app instead, and you could log in to JUST the ao3 email and set it to notify for every email.
(Also as a general PSA: don't use your work, school, or military email as your AO3 email. Just don't.)
I want statistics like how many hours I spent reading, how many words I read, what my most read tags were, stuff like that.
So we've finally hit something that isn't easy and that requires a hell of a lot of manual work. Short version: AO3 does not track this data because they don't want to. (Mostly due to privacy concerns.) The lack of this tracking is a feature, not a bug. You can crunch these numbers yourself, but it will take a hell of a lot more effort, and it's something I personally found is not worth the effort the couple of times I have tried to crunch those numbers. If you are willing to download your history to an actual computer (not a tablet or chromebook) using Calibre, you can get a rough idea of your most popular tags via their tag browser, but it won't play nice with typos synned to a Common Tag (Canonical Tag/filterable tag) like ao3 does. (If anyone has used an app that gave you stats on this, please let me know in reblogs/replies/via ask how that worked because I am very curious.)
I need an app because <other reason>.
The AO3 Unofficial Browser Tools FAQ might cover your use case: https://archiveofourown.org/faq/unofficial-browser-tools?language_id=en If not, give a shout and we'll see what other tumblr users suggest!

So I was clicking around for Canucks’ records against other teams for analytical purposes, then out came this on my screen:
JUST STUNNED SPEECHLESS
For reals???
It hurts so good. We like Lanks in the net right now but it’s ‘tough missing one of the best goalies in the world’ in Captain QH43’s own words a few days ago.
Look at them!!! Does NHL know something we don’t?!?!

who up sinning their fest
#one of my worst recent hyperfixations i'll admit#and i dont even have an excuse like ohhh i used to read this back in the late 2000s before all the terf shit#no i got into it in late 2023 this school year cause i stumbled across the tvtropes page#and i was like 'sinfest'? isnt that the name of that terf Twitter comic? but the cover image showed a sick ass artstyle so i read it#and im just obsessed with it now its such a strange spectacle. its like a political cartoon and a newspaper comic at the same time#my fav era has gotta be late 2000s maybe early 2010s sinfest... hell maybe even mid 2010s sinfest if i ignore the sisterhood#now every strip is just about jewish people or calling trans women groomers#and almost every once-likable character is now canonically a terf and/or racist and/or antivaxxer etc#or theyre just not in the comic at all anymore like my dear criminy and fuschia#i hope we never get another appearance from them godbless#cause last time we saw criminy he was helping squig and slick break a terf out of she/her penitentiary. with fuschia's permission#theyre definitely the best part of 2010s sinfest. a bygone era#the best part of 2000s sinfest is the sharp artstyle and lil e just being evil#and the best part of 2020s sinfest seems to be. um. laughing at how ridiculous it is? its kind of hard to enjoy though.#i intend to stay updated on it because i like being able to say i've read all of sinfest start to finish#but man i gotta get an adblocker soon cause i read it on the official website cause idk how else to read it online and the ads are constant#really funny when ur reading a strip criticizing the prevalence of ads in our day to day life#not as funny when you remember tatsuya is probably making money off of them. so yeah im gonna install ublock#but the problem is i usually read it on my school computer to pass time. and that technically isnt my computer so i cant download ublock#anyways. i could ramble on about how much i love and hate and am obsessed w sinfest all day but heres some fanart of the characters.#id like to make my own headcanon version of sinfest aka sinfest if it was good#but headcanons arent enough... i need to kill tatsuya ishida#sinfest#squigley sinfest#monique sinfest#lil e sinfest#the devil sinfest#tangerine sinfest#images that are horrid to see and look at#mspaint

Happy 10 year anniversary to the greatest film ever made!
My brother and I have watched this terrible, terrible movie every year since it came out. Sometimes more than once. We can quote most of it by heart. It lived on our DVR for about 7 of those years, and after it disappeared (our DVR sometimes purges itself idk) our local library inexplicitly got the DVD. So we have never seen a year without Grumpy Cat's Worst Christmas Ever. And I hope we never do. I hope we find a way to watch this bad movie for many years to come. Anyways these are doodles of some of our favorite quotes from the film. If you've ever met us, you'd know that "Why didn't we take the Camaro" is part of our lexicon. Anyways I can't reccomend this movie enough go watch it rn.
#grumpy cat's worst christmas ever#my art#I may be the first person to ever do fanart for this movie#shoutout weird family tradtions#i'm not joking#this terrible movie holds such a special place in my heart#I knew I had to do something special for its 10 year anniversary#here's to ten more!#anyways I'm going to info dump about weird facts I know about this movie now#as far as we can tell#this movie only aired somewhere between 5-10 times on lifetime in 2014#and never again#it aired back to back at least 3 times on premiere day#bc our DVR recording started with the end of it and ended with the start of it again#the dvd still features the live tweet announcements and ad break bumpers (thank god idk what I would do with out them)#there is an official tumblr somewhere on this website#the official soundtrack doesn't feature any songs from the film#but does feature a song by donny and zach (the best characters) so...#and also the nyan cat theme#very normal movie

I'm not sure if it's too early to mention it...but have any of you heard of Sheezy?
(Not the early 2000s site, but the revival project from 2020-2022)
#Becaaause it's coming back soon~#and yours truly is going to be a moderator on it heehee!#It might be a bit early to mention it because it's still being built/currently in a supporter-only beta while it's being put back together#but if you had an account in the 2020-2022 revival project youll be able to return to your account in a few weeks when the beta opens up to#all returning users!#and then after that registration for the site will open in chunks#For those who don't know! Sheezy is an art community site!#I was on it in 2021-2022 for a few months before it shut down and it was genuinely one of the most pleasant experiences ive had as an onlin#artist#The focus isn't numbers so much as community and discovering new people#and I'm honored to be a part of bringing it back now that the team has a proper foundation and time to dedicate to our little project C:#exli speaks#Im just so excited for it!#It isnt perfect and we're fleshing things out as we go and the website will improve exponentially over time#but AAHH#I might link the subcription page in the comments if people are interested ($3 gets you into the supporter beta while the website is built#and the bugs these supporters discover are fixed for the official launch)#but honestly it might be more exciting to join for the official launch too...

would it be the stupidest thing to spend money on. also Yes
#i'm not even besmirching the skills of the organizers to actually bring this to bear as a functional safe and enjoyable event#i'm just marveling at the pointlessness of organizing a tumblr convention - hell a social media convention - in 2024#dashcon 1 was planned around tumblr's perceived identity as a fandom hotspot so like are we doing that again?#so is this just gonna be a normal smallscale nerd convention with an eyecatching name?#that actually doesn't sound all that bad but even a tumblr con unaffiliated with tumblr on official grounds leaves a weird taste in my mout#i just don't think this website in and of itself is worth celebrating in this way. we just thought it was in 2012-14 bc we were children#and all our friends were here#dashcon 2#dashcon#just squirrelly things

An Observation:
This is only from a single instance of stumbling upon one, mind you, but... I think one of the really great things about Hazbin Hotel is that it's nearly impossible to even tell the difference between leaks and High End Fanart because if you find any artist who knows what they're doing with something like Hazbin or Helluva, it's pretty much always the same quality every time, so even if you stop and realize you're in the middle of being spoiled for a moment, because you think you're looking at fanart, you can always stop what you're doing and let yourself be surprised later? As it only dawns on you just how good all the fanartists making fanworks for this show actually are?
And I think this is because the majority of fanartists making High End Fanworks for Hazbin and Helluva ether already know that their work is High Quality enough to the point where they can make uniquely interesting often one of a kind fan merch to sell to pick up Shark Robots (understandable, Adult Cartoon don't really *NEED* to make High Quality Marketable Plushie when they're On A Budget...) slack. And I love them for that.
...Or, the rest of the artists making High End, High Quality Fanart, were so good that they already got recruited and hired to work on Hazbin and Helluva respectively, which is kind of in turn how we ended up with a lot of the fanon we now have for the show. And I love them for that.
This is mostly because the bitches who get Hazbin, and Helluva, get it. And the ones that don't, don't.
So yes, if you're posting leaks for Hazbin and Helluva, doom on you, there's a special place in hell for you and I'm blocking you.
Though, on the bright side, if you're confused and thinking you're just looking at fanart, even for a second, you technically cannot be spoiled from that.
And this is just to say: I think that the Hazbin Hotel and Helluva Boss Fandom(s) might just have THE GREATEST (albeit small) cluster of Actually Good Fanartists out there of all time [because most of them work(ed) on the show(s) to begin with.]
And for every obnoxious force in the universe trying to turn the broader reputation of these Fandom(s) into some disgusting fusion of Steven Universe and Five Night's At Freddies, I'm especially grateful to these handfuls of Hazbin and Helluva fanartists for just keeping the actual, core spirit of these shows Alive and keeping me sane.
That's all.
#Hazbin Hotel#Helluva Boss#media comprehension#media literacy#So yeah I took an opportunity to say 'fuck you' to people leaking any actual storyboard art for the here but I also wanted to take some tim#to praise our artists for being *THAT GOOD* they saved my ass from being spoiled and also for the fan merch that they make for the fandom#because I've really been craving some Higher Quality more Actually *ADULT* oriented merch at least for Hazbin to be honest ...#And the fan merch kind of fills the void at least a little ...<3#I'm kinda just hoping A24 themselves will kind of take up that mantle of building a more 'Sophisticated' Brand for Hazbin in their websites#own Merch Store once the official show actually launches with them but we'll see...#Just wanted to praise our Fan Merchants for all the good they're doing in the meantime also cause that also counts as fan art <3#and it's the best! <3

SO HERE IS THE WHOLE STORY (SO FAR).
I am on my knees begging you to reblog this post and to stop reblogging the original ones I sent out yesterday. This is the complete account with all the most recent info; the other one is just sending people down senselessly panicked avenues that no longer lead anywhere.
IN SHORT
Cliff Weitzman, CEO of Speechify and (aspiring?) voice actor, used AI to scrape thousands of popular, finished works off AO3 to list them on his own for-profit website and in his attached app. He did this without getting any kind of permission from the authors of said work or informing AO3. Obviously.
When fandom at large was made aware of his theft and started pushing back, Weitzman issued a non-apology on the original social media posts—using
his dyslexia;
his intent to implement a tip-system for the plagiarized authors; and
a sudden willingness to take down the work of every author who saw my original social media posts and emailed him individually with a ‘valid’ claim,
as reasons we should allow him to continue monetizing fanwork for his own financial gain.
When we less-than-kindly refused, he took down his ‘apologies’ as well as his website (allegedly—it’s possible that our complaints to his web host, the deluge of emails he received or the unanticipated traffic brought it down, since there wasn’t any sort of official statement made about it), and when it came back up several hours later, all of the work formerly listed in the fan fiction category was no longer there.
THE TAKEAWAYS
1. Cliff Weitzman (aka Ofek Weitzman) is a scumbag with no qualms about taking fanwork without permission, feeding it to AI and monetizing it for his own financial gain;
2. Fandom can really get things done when it wants to, and
3. Our fanworks appear to be hidden, but they’re NOT DELETED from Weitzman’s servers, and independently published, original works are still listed without the authors' permission. We need to hold this man responsible for his theft, keep an eye on both his current and future endeavors, and take action immediately when he crosses the line again.
THE TIMELINE, THE DETAILS, THE SCREENSHOTS (behind the cut)
Sunday night, December 22nd 2024, I noticed an influx in visitors to my fic You & Me & Holiday Wine. When I searched the title online, hoping to find out where they came from, a new listing popped up (third one down, no less):
This listing is still up today, by the way, though now when you follow the link to word-stream, it just brings you to the main site. (Also, to be clear, this was not the cause for the influx of traffic to my fic; word-stream did not link back to the original work anywhere.)
I followed the link to word-stream, where to my horror Y&M&HW was listed in its entirety—though, beyond the first half of the first chapter, behind a paywall—along with a link promising to take me—through an app downloadable on the Apple Store—to an AI-narrated audiobook version. When I searched word-stream itself for my ao3 handle I found both of my multi-chapter fics were listed this way:
Because the tags on my fics (which included genres* and characters, but never the original IPs**) weren’t working, I put ‘Kara Danvers’ into the search bar and discovered that many more supercorp fics (Supergirl TV fandom, Kara Danvers/Lena Luthor pairing) were listed.
I went looking online for any mention of word-stream and AI plagiarism (the covers—as well as the ridiculously inflated number of reviews and ratings—made it immediately obvious that AI fuckery was involved), but found almost nothing: only one single Reddit post had been made, and it received (at that time) only a handful of upvotes and no advice.
I decided to make a tumblr post to bring the supercorp fandom up to speed about the theft. I draw as well as write for fandom and I’ve only ever had to deal with art theft—which has a clear set of steps to take depending on where said art was reposted—and I was at a loss regarding where to start in this situation.
After my post went up I remembered Project Copy Knight, which is worth commending for the work they’ve done to get fic stolen from AO3 taken down from monetized AI 'audiobook’ YouTube accounts. I reached out to @echoekhi, asking if they’d heard of this site and whether they could advise me on how to get our works taken down.
While waiting for a reply I looked into Copy Knight’s methods and decided to contact OTW’s legal department:
And then I went to bed.
By morning, tumblr friends @makicarn and @fazedlight as well as a very helpful tumblr anon had seen my post and done some very productive sleuthing:
@echoekhi had also gotten back to me, advising me, as expected, to contact the OTW. So I decided to sit tight until I got a response from them.
That response came only an hour or so later:
Which was 100% understandable, but still disappointing—I doubted a handful of individual takedown requests would accomplish much, and I wasn’t eager to share my given name and personal information with Cliff Weitzman himself, which is unavoidable if you want to file a DMCA.
I decided to take it to Reddit, hoping it would gain traction in the wider fanfic community, considering so many fandoms were affected. My Reddit posts (with the updates at the bottom as they were emerging) can be found here and here.
A helpful Reddit user posted a guide on how users could go about filing a DMCA against word-stream here (to wobbly-at-best results)
A different helpful Reddit user signed up to access insight into word-streams pricing. Comment is here.
Smells unbelievably scammy, right? In addition to those audacious prices—though in all fairness any amount of money would be audacious considering every work listed is accessible elsewhere for free—my dyscalculia is screaming silently at the sight of that completely unnecessary amount of intentionally obscured numbers.
Speaking of which! As soon as the post on r/AO3—and, as a result, my original tumblr post—began taking off properly, sometime around 1 pm, jumpscare! A notification that a tumblr account named @cliffweitzman had commented on my post, and I got a bit mad about the gist of his message :
Fortunately he caught plenty of flack in the comments from other users (truly you should check out the comment section, it is extremely gratifying and people are making tremendously good points), in response to which, of course, he first tried to both reiterate and renegotiate his point in a second, longer comment (which I didn’t screenshot in time so I’m sorry for the crappy notification email formatting):
which he then proceeded to also post to Reddit (this is another Reddit user’s screenshot, I didn’t see it at all, the notifications were moving too fast for me to follow by then)
... where he got a roughly equal amount of righteously furious replies. (Check downthread, they're still there, all the way at the bottom.)
After which Cliff went ahead & deleted his messages altogether.
It’s not entirely clear whether his account was suspended by Reddit soon after or whether he deleted it himself, but considering his tumblr account is still intact, I assume it’s the former. He made a handful of sock puppet accounts to play around with for a while, both on Reddit and Tumblr, only one of which I have a screenshot of, but since they all say roughly the same thing, you’re not missing much:
And then word-stream started throwing a DNS error.
That lasted for a good number of hours, which was unfortunately right around the time that a lot of authors first heard about the situation and started asking me individually how to find out whether their work was stolen too. I do not have that information and I am unclear on the perimeters Weitzman set for his AI scraper, so this is all conjecture: it LOOKS like the fics that were lifted had three things in common:
They were completed works;
They had over several thousand kudos on AO3; and
They were written by authors who had actively posted or updated work over the past year.
If anyone knows more about these perimeters or has info that counters my observation, please let me know!
I finally thought to check/alert evil Twitter during this time, and found out that the news was doing the rounds there already. I made a quick thread summarizing everything that had happened just in case. You can find it here.
I went to Bluesky too, where fandom was doing all the heavy lifting for me already, so I just reskeeted, as you do, and carried on.
Sometime in the very early evening, word-stream went back up—but the fan fiction category was nowhere to be seen. Tentative joy and celebration!***
That’s when several users—the ones who had signed up for accounts to gain intel and had accessed their own fics that way—reported that their work could still be accessed through their history. Relevant Reddit post here.
Sooo—
We’re obviously not done. The fanwork that was stolen by Weitzman may be inaccessible through his website right now, but they aren’t actually gone. And the fact that Weitzman wasn’t willing to get rid of them altogether means he still has plans for them.
This was my final edit on my Reddit post before turning off notifications, and it's pretty much where my head will be at for at least the foreseeable future:
Please feel free to add info in the comments, make your own posts, take whatever action you want to take to protect your work. I only beg you—seriously, I’m on my knees here—to not give up like I saw a handful of people express the urge to do. Keep sharing your creative work and remain vigilant and stay active to make sure we can continue to do so freely. Visit your favorite fics, and the ones you’ve kept in your ‘marked for later’ lists but never made time to read, and leave kudos, leave comments, support your fandom creatives, celebrate podficcers and support AO3. We created this place and it’s our responsibility to keep it alive and thriving for as long as we possibly can.
Also FUCK generative AI. It has NO place in fandom spaces.
THE 'SMALL' PRINT (some of it in all caps):
*Weitzman knew what he was doing and can NOT claim ignorance. One, it’s pretty basic kindergarten stuff that you don’t steal some other kid’s art project and present it as your own only to act surprised when they protest and then tell the victim that they should have told you sooner that they didn’t want their project stolen. And two, he was very careful never to list the IPs these fanworks were based on, so it’s clear he was at least familiar enough with the legalities to not get himself in hot water with corporate lawyers. Fucking over fans, though, he figured he could get away with that.
**A note about the AI that Weitzman used to steal our work: it’s even greasier than it looks at first glance. It’s not just the method he used to lift works off AO3 and then regurgitate onto his own website and app. Looking beyond the untold horrors of his AI-generated cover ‘art’, in many cases these covers attempt to depict something from the fics in question that can’t be gleaned from their summaries alone. In addition, my fics (and I assume the others, as well) were listed with generated genres; tags that did not appear anywhere in or on my fic on AO3 and were sometimes scarily accurate and sometimes way off the mark. I remember You & Me & Holiday Wine had ‘found family’ (100% correct, but not tagged by me as such) and I believe The Shape of Soup was listed as, among others, ‘enemies to friends to lovers’ and ‘love triangle’ (both wildly inaccurate). Even worse, not all the fic listed (as authors on Reddit pointed out) came with their original summaries at all. Often the entire summary was AI-generated. All of these things make it very clear that it was an all-encompassing scrape—not only were our fics stolen, they were also fed word-for-word into the AI Weitzman used and then analyzed to suit Weitzman’s needs. This means our work was literally fed to this AI to basically do with whatever its other users want, including (one assumes) text generation.
***Fan fiction appears to have been made (largely) inaccessible on word-stream at this time, but I’m hearing from several authors that their original, independently published work, which is listed at places like Kindle Unlimited, DOES still appear in word-stream’s search engine. This obviously hurts writers, especially independent ones, who depend on these works for income and, as a rule, don’t have a huge budget or a legal team with oceans of time to fight these battles for them. If you consider yourself an author in the broader sense, beyond merely existing online as a fandom author, beyond concerns that your own work is immediately at risk, DO NOT STOP MAKING NOISE ABOUT THIS.
Again, please, please PLEASE reblog this post instead of the one I sent originally. All the information is here, and it's driving me nuts to see the old ones are still passed around, sending people on wild goose chases.
Thank you all so much.

Okay, so I don’t know how accurate this info is currently, since the last time I burned a CD was when I was a teen (though my older brother still does it occasionally, so I assume it must still work), but here is a way that I used to burn iTunes playlists to CD. And how to get songs that you didn’t purchase in iTunes onto iTunes to do this.
(Side note, if someone knows if this has changed, please let me know!! I did a cursory Google and it SEEMS like it’s still legit, but I just got back from vacation, I am very sick, and it’s 2:00 am, so I don’t have the ability to fact check on my computer right now.)
So, basically, ITunes has a feature that allows you to burn your playlist to a blank CD. I think you just head to the playlist, click on where it says “file” at the top of the menu, then there should be an option to ‘burn playlist to CD.’ After that, you just need to have a DVD/CD player on your computer and a blank CD. If you don’t have a DVD/CD player built into your computer, I think you can find ones that will connect through USB online. No idea how much that will cost though, sorry.
Once you have your CD player, just put the blank CD in and burn the playlist. It doesn’t take too long usually, I don’t think. You can only have about 20 songs that are around 3:00-4:00 minutes each, usually, if I recall correctly, but you can get a whole bunch of black CD’s for fairly cheap these days, it just takes time. But if you’ve got a whole afternoon free and want to make some music, mazel toz.
Now, if you don’t want to give money to Apple and purchase their music, then you can find ways to, ah… “totally legally” obtain music and upload them to ITunes fairly simply. That’s up to you to find, though, that’s not what this tutorial is about.
Basically, no matter how you obtain it, you just need to have the MP3 files in a folder, then go to that same “file” section on ITunes and see where it says “add folder/file to library.” From there, either pick an entire folder full of songs you want to add, or pick the individual song file, and it will automatically add it to your iTunes library. From there you can rename the file, add the name of the artist, album it’s from, etc. I tend to just put the name of the song and the artist, since it’s easiest for me, but you do you.
Once all the songs you want are added to iTunes, you then put them into a playlist and follow the previous method to burn it to a CD. I think you can do this with songs you’ve purchased through other media by converting them to MP3 downloads, though I have no idea how, sorry. I’d recommend looking it up on the web browser of your choice.
The one con of this whole thing is that I believe you have to have an iTunes account to do it, but if you don’t have one already, just make a burner account, I guess. Honestly you may not need one, I really don’t know.
But yeah. It’s a fairly simple process, unless they’ve changed it in the past several years. Which is possible, but I know my older brother still burns CD every so often, so I’m pretty sure it’s still doable. I’ll check tomorrow if anyone reminds me. Hope this helps someone! I used to love burning CD’s, finding the perfect playlist of songs to go together for a road trip, it was a blast.
HOLD THE LINE!! KEEP PUSHING!!!!!
#I used to make CD’s for road trips my family took all the time when I was a teen#I stopped once our car didn’t have a CD player anymore and I could just connect my phone to the speaker directly#But I’m fairly certain this method still works#I googled it and it came up on ITunes’s official website so I think it’s still legit#I know the adding songs to ITunes works though since I do that all the tome#time#With my ‘totally legally purchased’ songs from YouTube.#I just add them to my phone now.#The glory of those is that Apple can’t touch them I don’t think.#Not like they can the songs you purchase from them.#You also might be able to just buy an old iPod nano or touch and upload the songs to that. But I think that defeats the purpose a little.
