Korfiotisches Kaffee-Tagebuch II: Agios Stefanos
Korfiotisches Kaffee-Tagebuch II: Agios Stefanos

Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media

The Measure of Time by Gianrico Carofiglio

The Measure of Time by Gianrico Carofiglio
Translated by Howard Curtis

The Guido Guerrieri Series #6
Having explored a wide range of Bitter Lemon’s translated crime fiction novels and also developed a taste for Italian novels, I was keen to delve into the works of Gianrico Carofiglio. His newest title “The Measure Of Time” was released on 18 March and is the sixth in the Guido Guerrieri series, eighth in total for the London based publisher. Guerrieri is a defence barrister in his early fifties based in Bari.
I must admit I did pick up this book with a slight trepidation wondering how well I would follow a novel that focuses on the Italian legal system. Gianrico Carofiglio was an anti-Mafia prosecutor in Southern Italy who has since turned to writing. He has sold over six million copies of his books worldwide. While I have read some John Grisham in the past and found myself a little perplexed, my concerns over “The Measure Of Time” were thankfully unfounded. Not only is Guido Guerrieri an intriguing and likeable character, but his legal functions were explained in a very clear and absorbing manner. Also no backstory was required and I enjoyed this as a standalone novel – although I will definitely be looking at his back catalogue when time allows.
Tumblr media
When advised by his legal secretary Pasquale that he has had a request for an appointment by a lady named Delle Foglie, Guerrieri is prompted to think back to the period before he was a fully practicing lawyer when he dated a girl of the same name. While he convinces himself this cannot be the same person. This and a chance meeting with a younger lawyer who had recently lost his mother to a slow and painful death lead him to stop his work and ponder the passage of time.
“I’d often thought that thanks to what I had earned in my profession, of which I had spent a very small part, I could quit, sell the practice and devote myself to something else… Anything just to escape the grip of time. Time that keeps passing, never changing. Near motionless in its daily repletion but fading fast”.
Melancholy perhaps, but something many of us can relate to. Likewise, there is a thought provoking reflection on how it is extremely hard I it is to imagine a world after our own death. While this might seem like a mournful way to commence the first ten pages of a novel, it really sets the tone for a reflective and considered individual.
Having gained our empathy, we obtain his interest when Lorenza Delle Foglie walks into his office. It is revealed that she is the lady he knew years before. We begin to learn the relevance of the preceeding passages as the years have not been kind to her. Having vanished from his life 27 years earlier she has now come to him in need of his help as her son is in prison for murder. With his appeal due she requires a defense lawyer. When he hears her story, Guerrieri is far from convinced about the innocence of Delle Foglie’s son yet agrees to take on the case. His initial queries do not present him with any optimism that he can overturn his sentence but he does find a few aspects of the defence that were not correctly portrayed at the original trial.
We return through Guerrieri’s thoughts to the times he spent with Delle Foglie, how they met and how she inspired him. Several years older than him and persuing a bohemian lifestyle, she encouraged the studious trainee lawyer to take an interest in literature, films and culture thus enrichening his life. While their short liaison was locked firmly in his memory without common friends to recall it, he does appreciate that she had been a mentor to him. It is this realisation rather than any lingering flame which encourages him to pursue some leads provided by her son.
There are some interesting characteristics to Guerrieri. He has continued to surround himself with strong minded females, in both his personal and professional life. Despite being settled with a partner, he is quite a solitary individual. He also finds time to confess his guilt to the faded punch bag which he no longer uses.
The final third of the novel is largely focused on the appeal trial. This is where Carofiglio’s legal background provided us with realistic insights into the barrister's methodology. The author cleverly explains the thought processes through the statements and question that Guerrieri makes. Some are intended for the benefit of the accused, some designed to plant doubt in witnesses, to raise ambiguities with the judge and jury; and to press the relentless prosecution lawyer into avenues that discredit their own case. Through Howard Curtis’ interpretation of Carofiglio’s prose, I truly felt I could visibly see the characters, hear their testimonies and visualize their expressions within the court room just as well as I could through any televised drama.
Tumblr media
There is so much I enjoyed about this novel. I recognised the theme of the novel’s title, that time can pass us by quickly. I was drawn to Guerrieri as a character and loved the setting of Bari. On sleepless nights he visits an all-night bookshop in the centre of Bari where he discusses Aristotle with fellow unsettled souls. The entrapped holiday maker within me would also love to take the two-hour boat trip to the Greek island of Othonoi referred to. One aspect that I particularly liked about this book is that it reinforced my beliefs that some people may not remain in our lives for a long time, yet their influence can have a profound lasting effect. This is an exceptionally crafted legal fiction which captivates the reader with processes explained in full clarity while contemplating subjects that are rarely considered. In short, it’s a real gem of a book.
Thanks to Alex Hippisley-Cox for the review copy, and to Anne Cater for the blog tour invitation.

This is not the first book I had read translated by Howard Curtis. Read on for a short bonus review that I wrote before I started blogging:

A Florentine Death
By Michele Giuttari
Translated by Howard Curtis
Abacus
Recently I enjoyed this book by Michele Giuttari. The author is former head of the Florence Police Force (1995-2003), where he was responsible for re-opening the Monster of Florence case and jailing several key Mafia figures.
A Florentine Death features Chief Superintendent Michele Ferrara (who does the role that Giuttari had). Don't assume lots of technical police details as other than conflicts with the prosecutor, there is nothing overly procedural about Ferrara.
There are a series of random murders which originally appear to be unrelated until Ferrara gets some mystery messages. The book features the city of Florence. I really liked some of the descriptions in it, such as when Ferrara visits a prisoner and also the climax in a remote and snow covered setting. There are another 6 or 7 books in the series and I will return to them sometime. It is quite a straight forward read and is translated well by Howard Curtis.
Slightly dated now, the Italian edition dates back from 2004 - does the suspect have a mobile phone someone asks, but overall it holds up well.

The Nazis proceeded to administer Athens and Thessaloniki, while other regions of the country were given to Nazi Germany’s partners, Fascist Italy and Bulgaria. The occupation brought about terrible hardships for the Greek civilian population. Over 100,000 civilians died of starvation during the winter of 1941–1942, tens of thousands more died because of reprisals by Nazis and collaborators, the country’s economy was ruined, and the great majority of Greek Jews were deported and murdered in Nazi concentration camps.[124][125] The Greek Resistance, one of the most effective resistance movements in Europe, fought vehemently against the Nazis and their collaborators. The German occupiers committed numerous atrocities, mass executions, and wholesale slaughter of civilians and destruction of towns and villages in reprisals. In the course of the concerted anti-guerilla campaign, hundreds of villages were systematically torched and almost 1,000,000 Greeks left homeless.[125] In total, the Germans executed some 21,000 Greeks, the Bulgarians 40,000, and the Italians 9,000.[126] Following liberation and the Allied victory over the Axis, Greece annexed the Dodecanese Islands from Italy and regained Western Thrace from Bulgaria. The country almost immediately descended into a bloody civil war between communist forces and the anti-communist Greek government, which lasted until 1949 with the latter’s victory. The conflict, considered one of the earliest struggles of the Cold War,[127] resulted in further economic devastation, mass population displacement and severe political polarisation for the next thirty years.[128] Although the post-war decades were characterised by social strife and widespread marginalisation of the left in political and social spheres, Greece nonetheless experienced rapid economic growth and recovery, propelled in part by the U.S.-administered Marshall Plan.[129] In 1952, Greece joined NATO, reinforcing its membership in the Western Bloc of the Cold War. Military regime (1967–74) King Constantine II’s dismissal of George Papandreou’s centrist government in July 1965 prompted a prolonged period of political turbulence, which culminated in a coup d’état on 21 April 1967 by the Regime of the Colonels. Under the junta, civil rights were suspended, political repression was intensified, and human rights abuses, including state-sanctioned torture, were rampant. Economic growth remained rapid before plateauing in 1972. The brutal suppression of the Athens Polytechnic uprising on 17 November 1973 set in motion the events that caused the fall of the Papadopoulos regime, resulting in a counter-coup which overthrew Georgios Papadopoulos and established brigadier Dimitrios Ioannidis as the new junta strongman. On 20 July 1974, Turkey invaded the island of Cyprus in response to a Greek-backed Cypriot coup, triggering a political crisis in Greece that led to the regime’s collapse and the restoration of democracy through Metapolitefsi. The former prime minister Konstantinos Karamanlis was invited back from Paris where he had lived in self-exile since 1963, marking the beginning of the Metapolitefsi era. The first multiparty elections since 1964 were held on the first anniversary of the Polytechnic uprising. A democratic and republican constitution was promulgated on 11 June 1975 following a referendum which chose to not restore the monarchy. Meanwhile, Andreas Papandreou, George Papandreou’s son, founded the Panhellenic Socialist Movement (PASOK) in response to Karamanlis’s conservative New Democracy party, with the two political formations dominating in government over the next four decades. Greece rejoined NATO in 1980.[c][130] Greece became the tenth member of the European Communities (subsequently subsumed by the European Union) on 1 January 1981, ushering in a period of sustained growth. Widespread investments in industrial enterprises and heavy infrastructure, as well as funds from the European Union and growing revenues from tourism, shipping, and a fast-growing service sector raised the country’s standard of living to unprecedented levels. Traditionally strained relations with neighbouring Turkey improved when successive earthquakes hit both nations in 1999, leading to the lifting of the Greek veto against Turkey’s bid for EU membership. The country adopted the euro in 2001 and successfully hosted the 2004 Summer Olympic Games in Athens.[131] More recently, Greece has suffered greatly from the late-2000s recession and has been central to the related European sovereign debt crisis. Due to the adoption of the euro, when Greece experienced financial crisis, it could no longer devalue its currency to regain competitiveness. Youth unemployment was especially high during the 2000s.[132] The Greek government-debt crisis, and subsequent austerity policies, Located in Southern[133] and Southeast Europe,[134] Greece consists of a mountainous, peninsular mainland jutting out into the sea at the southern end of the Balkans, ending at the Peloponnese peninsula (separated from the mainland by the canal of the Isthmus of Corinth) and strategically located at the crossroads of Europe, Asia, and Africa.[d] Due to its highly indented coastline and numerous islands, Greece has the 11th longest coastline in the world with 13,676 km (8,498 mi);[140] its land boundary is 1,160 km (721 mi). The country lies approximately between latitudes 34° and 42° N, and longitudes 19° and 30° E, with the extreme points being:[141] North: Ormenio village South: Gavdos island East: Strongyli (Kastelorizo, Megisti) island West: Othonoi island Eighty percent of Greece consists of mountains or hills, making the country one of the most mountainous in Europe. Mount Olympus, the mythical abode of the Greek Gods, culminates at Mytikas peak 2,918 metres (9,573 ft),[142] the highest in the country. Western Greece contains a number of lakes and wetlands and is dominated by the Pindus mountain range. The Pindus, a continuation of the Dinaric Alps, reaches a maximum elevation of 2,637 m (8,652 ft) at Mt. Smolikas (the second-highest in Greece) and historically has been a significant barrier to east-west travel. The Pindus range continues through the central Peloponnese, crosses the islands of Kythera and Antikythera and finds its way into southwestern Aegean, in the island of Crete where it eventually ends. The islands of the Aegean are peaks of underwater mountains that once constituted an extension of the mainland. Pindus is characterised by its high, steep peaks, often dissected by numerous canyons and a variety of other karstic landscapes. The spectacular Vikos Gorge, part of the Vikos-Aoos National Park in the Pindus range, is listed by the Guinness book of World Records as the deepest gorge in the world.[143] Another notable formation are the Meteora rock pillars, atop which have been built medieval Greek Orthodox monasteries. Northeastern Greece features another high-altitude mountain range, the Rhodope range, spreading across the region of East Macedonia and Thrace; this area is covered with vast, thick, ancient forests, including the famous Dadia Forest in the Evros regional unit, in the far northeast of the country. Extensive plains are primarily located in the regions of Thessaly, Central Macedonia and Thrace. They constitute key economic regions as they are among the few arable places in the country. Rare marine species such as the pinniped seals and the loggerhead sea turtle live in the seas surrounding mainland Greece, while its dense forests are home to the endangered brown bear, the Eurasian lynx, the roe deer and the wild goat. Islands Main article: List of islands of Greece Greece features a vast number of islands – between 1,200 and 6,000, depending on the definition,[144] 227 of which are inhabited – and is considered a non-contiguous transcontinental country. Crete is the largest and most populous island; Euboea, separated from the mainland by the 60 m-wide Euripus Strait, is the second largest, followed by Lesbos and Rhodes. The Greek islands are traditionally grouped into the following clusters: the Argo-Saronic Islands in the Saronic gulf near Athens, the Cyclades, a large but dense collection occupying the central part of the Aegean Sea, the North Aegean islands, a loose grouping off the west coast of Turkey, the Dodecanese, another loose collection in the southeast between Crete and Turkey, the Sporades, a small tight group off the coast of northeast Euboea, and the Ionian Islands, located to the west of the mainland in the Ionian Sea. For sensational views and a volcanic setting: Milos
A truly dramatic natural setting characterises Milos, where tall volcanic rocks paint a vivid picture of orange, red and white. The attractions are varied and almost endless here: head off the beaten track to visit the Old Sulfur Mines at Pilorema, wander through the Catacombs that date back to the first to fifth centuries, seek out former pirate coves from the Middle Ages, and enjoy the sensational sea views from the Venetian Castle of Milos in Plaka.
For a well-rounded Cyclades sojourn: Naxos
The largest of the Cyclades Islands, Naxos still retains its idyllic charms by way of its ultra-scenic beaches, impossibly high peaks, and fertile green landscapes peppered with fruit and olive trees. Come here to enjoy a well-rounded Greek island getaway, and don’t leave without sampling local meats, vegetables and cheeses – from the salty and spicy kopanisti cheese, to chips made from richly-flavoured potatoes. Naxos Town’s Portara, doorway to the Temple of Apollo, is a must-visit – as is the Archaeological ?useum of Naxos, showcasing artefacts from the Late Neolithic period to the Early Christian times.
For quiet harbour town relaxation: Paros
For something upbeat but no less relaxing, try the many thrills of Páros. Its capital Parikia sits in a bayside location, and offers a pretty port, water sports opportunities, and plentiful shops and restaurants. Try Kolymbithres Beach for soft gold sands lined with surreal granite rocks, visit the incredible Byzantine church of Panagia Ekatontapiliani for your fill of history, and soak up the scenic Cycladic architecture that surrounds you as you spend an evening at a lively beach bar or club.
For wild beauty and deserted beaches: Kythnos
Set in the Western Cyclades, Kythnos is an enchanting island which offers a wild, golden landscape of rugged mountains and petite but pretty beaches – Kolona Beach being the most scenic, comprising a stretch of sand bordered on both ends by the sea. Soothe your body and soul with a trip to the island’s healing hot springs, visit the town of Chora for a quaint setting within which to enjoy a meal or drink, and explore the many churches that light up its small squares – should that leave you with an appetite for more, the sea-facing Church of Panagia Kanala is also well worth the uphill climb.
For a secret getaway loved by the locals: Samothraki
A quiet destination loved by local tourists, the island of Samothraki (or Samothrace) is over a two-hour ferry ride from Alexandroupolis on the mainland, and offers up all the archaeological splendour and active pursuits you could want from a Greek escape. History buffs can uncover the secrets of the Thracian Sanctuary of the Great Gods, intrepid adventurers should make the challenging climb up Mount Fengari to soak up the most rewarding sea views, while those simply looking to recline and top up their tan can find paradise on the popular Agios Georgios Beach.
For historic villages in a rugged setting: Folegandros
Couple dramatic cliffs and secluded beaches with traditional, history-rich villages in Folegandros, one of the southern Cyclades Islands where the views are as mesmerising as they come. You’ll find a trio of villages ripe for exploring here, from the old medieval town of Hora with its tight-knit architecture, to Karavostassis with its bobbing fishing boats and pebbled beach, to Ano Merià with its stone walls and cultivated fields. For an unforgettable experience filled with religious history, walk the zig-zagging path up to the Church of Panagia – a brilliant white against a stark, glowing hillside setting.
For religious history and tranquil beaches: Tinos
A half-hour ferry crossing from its world-famous neighbour Mykonos, Tinos is a true contender for breath-taking cultural and natural sights, as well as pared-back rest and relaxation. One of more than 200 Cyclades Islands, it’s known as a religious pilgrimage site for its imposing Lady of Tinos Marian shrine. It’s home to a quaint town of gleaming white cubist architecture, as well as a rugged rural landscape bordered by tranquil beaches – the most famous of these being Agios Ioannis Porto and Agios Sostis.
For unrestrained seclusion in the Ionian Islands: Othonoi
Stretched across almost 11 square kilometres and housing 13 small villages, Othonoi is the most western of the Ionian Islands and is perhaps best known for its fishing and olive cultivation. Remoteness is key here, whether you’re kicking back and relishing the crystal-clear waters at Aspri Ammos beach, hiring a boat to venture into the depths of the nearby Calypso Cave, or taking in the views of Corfu island and the Albanian coast from the active, 19th-century Kastri Lighthouse.

20. August Erikousa - Othonoi 9 SM
