Working Girl (1988). When a secretary's idea is stolen by her boss, she seizes an opportunity to steal it back by pretending she has her boss' job.
Deeeelightful. This is just seriously so much fun and emboldened with great comedic performances, strong writing, and a romance that's as much about self-love as it is about falling in love. Really special little 80s romcom with a stellar cast. 7/10.

man, people criticized barbie for being a sanitized intro to feminism but clearly that’s the level it needed to be at considering the academy watched the whole thing and went yeah… director (and main actress) whom??? We Must Nominate Ken
#btw not trying to take away from america ferrera’s nom bc it’s fantastic she got it#and frankly im more mad abt Greta not being nominated than Margot#but the whole thing just reeks of… yikes#barbie#oscars 2024#im also not trying to take away from Ryan’s performance. I do think he deserves the nom. it’s just Wild#that the movie got nominated for best picture and best screenplay and best supporting actor but not director…#and I suppose best actress too.. but I feel director is the bigger snub for a movie who got nominated for screenplay and actor and picture#yknos?

...wait, people are genuinely upset that greta gerwig didnt get nominated for best director for the toy commercial movie when the movie got nominations for best supporting actor, best supporting actress, best original song, best production design, best costume design, best picture, and best adapted screenplay for which greta gerwig was nominated?
#kai rambles#im sorry#im just like so annoyed at all the#''movie about feminism and patriarchy made by women has oscar nom go to ken'' reactions#as if no women were nominated at all?????#america ferrera was nominated#billie eilish was nominated#margot robbie was nominated as part of the best picture nom#greta gerwig was fucking nominated#like im sorry but this is like the white feminist version of a moral panic#also justine triet was nominated for best director for anatomy of a fall but i guess yall dont care about films in different languages#also lily gladstone got a best actress nomination becoming the first native american to nominated for an oscar#nimona got a best animated feature film nomination#in general we're seeing more non-english language films get nominations which goes a long way in convincing the general public in the#angliaphere to actually engage with media outside of it#*anglosphere#i just#your babys first feminism toy commercial not sweeping every category is a non-issue#and these reactions are so fucking embarrassing#like im sorry but the toy commercial movie happens to also have a lot of issues with white feminism#and a lot lf native americans have spoken out about it being outright hostile to them#its not a perfect film and its not being snubbed by the patriarchy#it just happens to be that there are other films that came out which were better

anyway i think award shows should stop trying to be funny. you’re never gonna be relevant again just accept that but especially and most importantly you will Never be relevant again by being funny.
#just lean into the pretentiousness honestly#make it bougie and fake deep#instead of bad comedians between each category do like. idk. a contemporary dance or something#auction off set pieces or costumes from best picture noms i dont knooooow#but humor will not save you. because you have none#‘i dont care about the oscars’ i say as i make my fourth oscars post in an hour#oscars#oscars 2024

ngl I’m soooo happy eeaao got so many oscar noms bc it is such an extraordinary film but the fact that nope was snubbed in literally every category (while fucking top gun and avatar got best picture noms) is absolutely criminal. nope was hands down the best film of the year next to eeaao. and while i haven’t seen it i find it stunning that the woman king was also completely snubbed after the great reviews it got. every time the oscars manage to do something right they still fuck up monumentally in some other way. the racism, the misogyny, and in particular the antiblackness run appallingly deep.
#like not even for visual effects…#they’re not even pretending to give a shit#like do they think giving moonlight best picture one time will protect them#ugh#my post#oscars 2023#oscars#oscar noms#movies#nope#the woman king#everything everywhere all at once#eeaao

“the academy has a gender bias and a genre bias working against Greta and Margot’s favor” and “the academy loves Ryan Gosling and probably tripped over themselves in the rush to nominate him in a showy comedic supporting role in a movie that was a box office hit” are two statements that can both be true at the same time.
#if anything gosling should have been kicked out for charles melton#I mean they gave this big blockbuster comedy based on existing IP 8 nominations so I wish ppl would calm down like they expected better lol#and 4 of those noms are picture screenplay and double supporting#black panther is prob the closest comparison and it missed out in all but 1 of the top line categories#same goes for best director honestly#you thought they were gonna nominate greta for barbie in this crazy competitive year?? we should be grateful that it’s not 5 dudes#greta still got the screenplay nom and margot got the best picture nom so they are doing fine#also I wish ppl would shut up about original song#I’m just Ken is fun and I’m glad it’s not just that boring af billie eilish song#they should have booted that for dua lipa and annette for margot (sry annette ily)#tbh tho I enjoyed barbie just fine but it’s nowhere near my top 10 lol#it’s not even in my top 5 pre-existing IP movies lol#oscars#barbie#mel talks

A Soldier's Story (1984). An African-American officer investigates a murder in a racially charged situation in World War II.
While it'll never quite stack up when it comes to the In the Heat of the Night comparisons (the two films share a director and thematic throughline after all), this is still an excellent, intelligent thriller grounded in great performances and a sharp script. Denzel Washington's the clear standout (I can't believe this is only his second feature!), but he's bolstered by a great cast all around. Just a really great watch. 8/10.

honestly i also think that groups arent going to award's shows anymore is also because its not only rigged but you also already know whos gonna win. like if they have 10 awards you already know b'ts is gonna get at least 3 whether they deserve it or not because otherwise fans will eat them alive, thats 7 awards left then you have male and female rookie which, well it excludes anyone who isnt a rookie, 1 award for best male (excludes women) 1 award for best female (excludes men), an award for solo artists, and then like performance of the year or something. so you basically have 50 groups sitting there ineligible for half the awards and not being able to get the other half because the same 5 groups always get them so like..... why even go at that point
yea i agree, awards shows across genre have been losing their sway for a couple of years. i think kpop ones are a particularly acute microcosm bc there are not very many types of awards, and there are really stark differences between the 'top tier' of groups and the rest of the ones that make up the majority of the industry, despite the industry being relatively small. even though there's numerically less groups debuting in the last twoish years (i did a quick survey of the wikipedia list of debuts by year to check numbers and it was about 30ish per year in the 2010s but so far it's been about 20ish for the 2020s. however this does include subunits and project groups so it's not a totally accurate figure), all those numbers compound on each other since there aren't the same amount leaving the industry as entering. so overall, these awards shows continue to be stacked towards the groups with the biggest companies and fanbases, even though there's better art that deserves that recognition being made by increasingly more and more groups that go completely unnoticed and have no chances of being noticed.
#the thing is that you cant really like.......diversify kpop awards in the same way you can for film/tv/music#you cant divide idol music by genre bc it IS the genre. unless you started giving out awards for 'best (x) concept'#which......doesn't really work#like this is the same problem as hollywood has with the oscars etc but there's still some kind of pretense that they care about 'art'#for those at least. like superhero movies dont usually get noms for best picture#whereas with kpop its like. if the lastest marvel movie won every award bc the most people watched it and it made the most money#its all very transparently capitalistic#and not at all a recognition of artistry#its also at a place where these awards are losing value to fans bc a handful of groups who dont deserve them are constantly winning them#but to groups from small companies who get nommed its still a HUGE deal. its become this weird dichotomy#i'm sure its very frustrating for idols#text#answers#kpop questions#awards shows 2022

half the movies that are nominated for a globe won't be in cinemas here until spring lol
#it's going to be a boring award season for me i guess :(#probably won't be able to watch all the best picture oscar noms before the show for the first time in years#maybe 2020 and 2021 were the death of cinema but boy was it an accessible time for movies#i'm not even for having everything available for streaming because i love few things more than seeing something on a big screen#but having release dates soooo much later than america and the uk? it's just bullshit for all the rest of europe#and other places too i guess#anyways i'll still try and watch the globes#for marcel the shell and my boy andrew and because jerrod carmichael is hosting
