Orochimaru is a very smart man, he's able to see the flaws with some of his plans, including his latest plan to obtain a perfect vessel. Once he takes over Sasuke's body, there won't be anymore Uchihas left for him to use as a vessel (except Itachi, but that didn't go very well the first time), but Orochimaru is smart, he knows that if he can't find a new Uchiha, he can just make one.

Orochimaru is incredibly creepy and invasive during the entire process, spreading the girl's pussy with his fingers and giving information and directions to the unnerved Sasuke, telling him what each body part is and what to do with it, both for Orochimaru's grand plan and his own sick enjoyment.

This is a mini rant/hill I will forever die on, with supporting evidence! In recent years I've been seeing more and more Sasuke-doesn't-like-animals talk and I feel like people have forgotten the sheer number of animals Sasuke interacts with in the series. Like yes you could argue he got the summons contract with the snakes only because he absorbed Orochimaru (whether he would have gotten the contract on his own without getting it from Orochimaru is debatable), and you could argue he got the contract with hawks for utilitarian purposes only (they are a very practical summons and Sasuke is very pragmatic from childhood after the massacre). But I feel like everyone's forgotten his relationship with the ninja cats? Like I've seen no mention of them in so long and a lot of people who associates him with cats seem to only do it based on personality but like??? Bro literally deals with ninja cats in the manga (I don't recall if the scene where he does is animated, I own the volume but I have no idea what episode that would be).

And I didn't screenshot the panel where he mentions it (this is in chapter 354 for reference) but it's a munitions storage area for th Uchiha clan. Again, this is a practical association he has with animals (cats in this case) but like compared to other characters in the series one of the only other people with affinities/associations with so many different animals is Juugo. Naruto has frogs and foxes, but from my memory he does have specific established relationships with any other species. Kakashi has his dogs and you could argue wolves with his father, and Kiba also has dogs, Sakura and Tsunade have slugs and you could also kind of argue pigs for Tsunade because of Shizune, Jiraya has frogs, and Sai I wouldn't really consider his ink drawings as animals. Shino has beetles (as far as I remember it's one species of beetle?), Kabuto has Orochimaru's snakes, Itachi has crowd (and arguably the same association with cats as Sasuke but we don't really see him interact with them much, at least in the main series. I know there have been like side story gaiden released but I haven't read/watched them all oop). Who else has his range of species????

Sasuke is an animal lover and I rest my case, bro is a walking pet sanctuary waiting to happen his ass would absolutely occasionally walk around with a snake in his shirt while he's traveling and shit and I will hear nothing else!

OH  and  there's  a  verse  in  which  she's  in  a  polyamorous  relationship  with  @desireshonour's  phillip  graves  and  @thehollyverse's  holly.

ㅤSurprisingly or not, it wasn't his first time being compared to the Sannin. Sometimes for motives as plain as their hair looking alike, sometimes for the apparently shared loved for science and knowledge and learning. Even with the choices Orochimaru had made, and even when considering the blatant dissimilarities when it came to ethics and morality and ideals, Itachi tended to take such comparisons as a compliment.

ㅤOn the other hand... to be told that Danzo felt protective of him was far less predictable. Not in a bad way, just unexpected. The role of protector was one that Itachi wore as second skin, if not first, and it wasn't often at all that he would find himself at the receiving end of it. Even as a young child, he immediately committed to the role of protective big brother [which was his favorite role in the entire world, mind you, even now with Sasuke as a grown man who was actually taller than Itachi himself] and, then, graduating from the academy in record time meant his protection was soon shifted to encompass the entire village.

ㅤChoosing to hop over that part, mostly because he wasn't sure what to say back [should he say anything at all? was it awkward to thank someone for wanting to protect you?], he instead focused on the instruction to follow Danzo's heartbeat. It wasn't hard to sense, given their proximity, and for the next couple of minutes Itachi entertained himself with counting the steady beats. And it might be a synergy effect, because the act of counting by itself always felt soothing to him. Add to that the hair pets his commander was occasionally throwing in, also very much appreciated as per the whole cat motif that started this situation, and indeed it didn't take long at all for Itachi to finally fully relax. To the point where, less than ten minutes later, he was actually asleep with his head on Danzo's shoulder.

"Feel at ease about bothering me. You are the same as Orochimaru: very eager to exchange ideas, as long as someone will understand. Speak freely, when we're alone."

He flipped the pen to his pinky finger, so he could cup some tickling hairs away from Itachi's mask, and save himself the tickle. He liked running some fingers over Itachi's hair. It made him want to run his fingers through his hair.

okay I promised myself I'll get to this topic one day, so here's my venting about Orochimaru in the whole SNS dynamics and in general.

first of all -

there is a Russian expression that is roughly translated like "the crook-backed can only be changed by grave" and well that's like literally the case since he just made a fucking 180° spin after his revival /okay mb a 179° one he still is kinda creepy in some cute way /

so I wanna start from the beginning.

when Orochimaru was first introduced he was sort of an ultimate villain, a disgusting and merciless and heartless and just the epitome of fucking evil, you know?

I mean his tongue? dude that was the creepiest thing I saw by the age of 12 /and probably till my current age of proud 22 / and I already discovered some pretty heavy hentai shit by then /aaand showed to my 6 yo sister....talk about childhood trauma / so I was ready to pretty much everything BUT THAT

and his ripping off faces and reviving the dead and killing his sensei and all those experiments on humans .... he is THE CREEPIEST villain in Naruto. I mean it.

this is why seeing him on Boruto all cute and caring parent / even though his son is a homunculus / really throws me off.

but lets return to a moment he marked Sasuke.

first of all, when Naruto sees them battle, he charges right in and goes all kyuubi to protect Sasuke and encourages him / even if in a somehow mocking naruto-isch way - well what do you want a guy never had anybody encourage him before how is he supposed to know this stuff / - so Naruto already sees Orochimaru as a threat to Sasuke.

if you remember, Naruto was unconscious and didn't know about the mark since Sasuke asked Sakura not to tell him. so he just went on believing it was over and honestly thought he and Sasuke were okay / which they actually were until Itachi was back in town /

and then when the 4 of Sound find Sasuke and convince him to turn to Orochimaru, even though Naruto saw they were falling apart, he felt betrayed. and twice as much, because it was OROCHIMARU Sasuke turned to. fucking Orochimaru, who Sasuke believed to be better suited for helping him / even though it meant he'd have to sacrifice his body / then anybody in Konoha, even with his hands not functional Orochimaru was his choice and that must have hurt Naruto bad.

he chose to believe Sasuke was abducted, but then he caught up to him and discovered that he was not, that Sasuke was leaving him for the damn snake and the worry the betrayal the devastation he felt ...

it could have broken him, but he chose to fight. he channeled all of this heartbreak and pain into motivation. and that is exactly what I admire about Naruto.

so back to Sasuke, who made the hardest choice of his life / yet / and comes to Orochimaru. he is drained, physically and emotionally, but he enters the life of constant fear and being on guard, because he can't trust the snake - his intentions of taking over his body were clear as a day.

I am not sure if Orochimaru would make any sexual advances... I think he is into many nasty things pedophilia being one of them, but I like to believe he never did anything to Sasuke. he might have watched or examined certain parts way too intently but I think fucking a body that was going to be his would be too much even for him. but you never know with those psychos.

anyway, he admired Sasuke. way too much. and he felt like a collector owning the best precious thing in the word. and yes for him it was like that - he felt like he owned Sasuke and he liked it. he enjoyed it.

pretty sure Sasuke didn't like that and his rebellious and disrespectful way of speaking with Orochimaru sure shows that.

but Orochimaru never let it phase him. I think he got a bit dillusional after his fight with Sarutobi - whether it was his encounter with the deadly technic that chopped some of his soul or the aftermath... he got more careless and overconfident and he really must have believed he owned Sasuke since he didn't see it coming when the latter attacked him.

so, even if Sasuke did feel something towards Orochimaru, it was disgust, pity and maybe a little respect for all the power the guy harnested. there is a chance he developed some ill-motivated teacher/student bond with him / since the guy was a bit of a batshit crazy parody on a parental figure for three years for him / but it wasn't that strong.

but Naruto didn't know that. all data he posessed was

1. Orochimaru has a weird obsession with Sasuke

2. Sasuke went to Orochimaru

of course Naruto was fucking jelous of Orochimaru! no wonder he went kyuubi after Orochimaru flaunted his ownership of Sasuke on that bridge and almost destroyed a forest in his wrath while Orochimaru kept sliding out of bodies one after another and just enjoying the display of anger.

and when Sasuke killed Orochimaru, I bet Naruto thought that was it! nnnnice! Naruto vs. Orochimaru 1:0! Love wins!

then Sasuke goes on rampage with his band of Orochimaru pets / I think Naruto didn't like that aswell /

but then Sasuke suddenly needs an advice.

guess who he turns to?

a fucking Orochimaru!!!!!

but Naruto didn't know that, he was busy saving the world?? but then Sasuke and his messed up team of hokages and Konoha enemies join them and Naruto had to sense Orochimaru, but I guees he was too happy to see Sasuke to pay much attention to it.

and then Orochimaru is redeemed and can continiou his research / though outside of Konoha - I am pretty much Naruto still doesn't exactly like the guy / and Sasuke keeps using his help for his missions so Naruto HAS to put up with that. he does everything he can, he even lets a homunculus made by Orochimaru / no offense to Mizuki I like Mizuki / enter the academy, because he wants to be a good person and good hokage and not let bad feelings interfere with his ruling...

and Orochimaru agreed to lay low...

and I am pretty sure Sasuke didn't really see the problem and it annoys him when Naruto would bring it up. he doesn't consider Orochimaru to be better than Naruto, it was just a better choice back then and he is a good ally if you think about it.

and I am both relieved and disappointed. I mean I like the fact that he could be redeemed but he was such a strong villain... he had a purpose, he had some messed up principles, he was such a catalyst in SNS dynamics...

but good old days are over, so we have to live in a era of Boruto, where nothing makes sense anymore.

s-tier sasusaku fics

disclaimer: not all of these are necessarily romantic sasusaku, or even healthy sasusaku

these are my all time favorites for different reasons, but i guess i should establish some sort of standard according to which i judge fanfics: 

characterization: i don’t expect the characters to be identical to their canon counterparts, otherwise i wouldn’t be reading anything other than the original material. however i’m also not fond of fics in which the only aspect of the character the author had gotten right is the name. i don’t like fanfics in which sakura is a cold and calculated genius or ones in which sasuke is a sexually deviant casanova. you might as well create a whole new character and write original work

prose: ok so obviously this is very subjective and considering my taste has changed immensely from the start of this year, let alone during the last 5 years, all the fics below are going to differ greatly. i like to read stuff that hits the spot between purple prose and bland just right. vivid descriptions, exposition, world-building, all that jazz, but without treating me like an idiot. leave some stuff up to the reader. a bit of negative capability didn’t kill anyone

grammar: i mean -- yeah. not much to expand upon here. i’m not a native speaker, so i’m not exactly an authority on this, but solid grammar is a non negotiable for me.

style: i’ve got some serious pet peeves in regards to formatting (when the author doesn’t want to separate their paragraphs for some reason for example) but another thing is i hate when there’s random japanese throughout the fic. it’s fine if the author decides to use suffixes the way the characters do in the manga, or if they want to use japanese words for terms that are well known in the fandom (shinobi, bunshin, hitai ate, jutsu etc.) but stuff like ‘’teme’’ ‘’ hime’’ ‘’baka’’ ‘’kami’’ is cringe (to me (especially since its mostly used improperly))

pacing: obviously this is a matter of preference, i personally love slow burn, but pacing is SO crucial for a good romance fic. the writing can be great, the characters can be on point, but if i feel the relationship is moving at an unnatural pace, if the development feels unearned, it instantly throws me off. i understand a lot of authors wanna get to the sauce quickly, but if sasuke is a rogue ninja focused on revenge, no he’s not going to want to marry sakura as soon as he sees her again. he would be impartial, nostalgic at best. there’s nothing wrong with letting the feelings develop naturally

there’s probably more but im honestly too lazy and i wanna get to the fic rec part. these are in no particular order:

alright i’m just gonna go ahead and post my chunin exams predictions (matchups and results):

Inojin vs Houki: Saw this one coming from a mile away because of the mutual connection to Sai. Results were already announced.

Iwabe vs Wasabi: Come on, we all knew this one was coming. I see a potential enemies to lovers arc here. That aside, we know pet users don’t tend to do well in the chunin exams and Wasabi’s team hasn’t been given much time to shine. Power to her, I love her so much, don’t think she’s gonna win this one chief

Tsubaki vs Denki: AKA the round where the writers cheat their own system. It’s the theme of traditional fighting vs scientific advancements, but they don’t have to undermine the shinobi system because Tsubaki is a samurai, not a shinobi. They still might let her win to prove a point, but they have nothing to lose by letting everyone’s favorite Boy Scout win the match using gadgets and gizmos. Also, people got excited over Shikadai vs Yodo last time, but as much as I hate to say it, I think (if this matchup happens) they’ll eventually be this generation’s Smart Guy/Badass Girl ship.

Sarada vs Chocho: Because they’re besties. Repeat of the iconic Sakura vs Ino but without the element of “we’re fighting over a boy who doesn’t like either of us.” Sarada is objectively better cut out to be a chunin than Chocho but considering Chocho was one of the standouts from the last exams, I think she’ll hold her own really well. (and then she and Inojin can get promoted together at a later date.)

Boruto vs Mitsuki: One, because it’ll feel the most like a “classic” fight; Boruto is like Sasuke in a lot of ways but he’s his father through and through, and pitting that against Orochimaru’s kid feels nostalgic. Total fanservice. Two, because these two idiots are currently not present at the exams and will only be allowed to compete if they arrive before their names are drawn. For the drama, they’ll show up right before the last match and their names will coincidentally be the last two in the bowl.

BONUS— Shikadai: As far as Naras go, this kid is too old to not be more traumatized than he is. He’ll have to fight god with a broken toothpick or something and he’ll lose his sense of self and will to live and probably try to quit being a shinobi, but hey, the writers will find some way to make him a jonin by the end of the chunin exams. Wonder if that has anything to do with the Amado subplot going on. (Also if this crack prediction comes true and Chocho somehow beats Sarada, Team 10 will have a member on each skill level, which I think is hilarious.)

I am generally pro-"teams become polycules" but I've never really thought about it for Taka in particular. I generally think of Sasuke as very uninterested in romance/sex and struggling with recognizing his own capacity for love, and while I used to think Suigetsu/Karin was cute, I don't think canon ever really developed them as friends/teammates or as individuals enough for me to maintain interest in the ship. I can get on board with every member of Taka being low-key in love with Sasuke, but while I do think Sasuke cares deeply about each of them underneath all his Sasuke-ness, I also think Sasuke would struggle to date one person, let alone three? So I think you could do KarinSuigetsuJuugo on the basis of "we all made the huge mistake of following sasuke into hell and now we're bonded by that mutual goal + how bad of a roadtrip that was." the full Taka OT4 could work too but it would be... a very slow burn with a lot of everyone working through their own screwed up feelings first lmao.

(they have to make a powerpoint presentation to explain it to sasuke. he's like "you're what?" and karin is like "I LITERALLY TOLD YOU MULTIPLE TIMES I LOVE YOU" and sasuke is like "but that's just how girls are??" meanwhile suigetsu is like "HOW COULD I BE MORE BLATANT THAN CARESSING YOUR FACE WHILE NAKED" and Juugo is very anxiously petting a bird)

Thematically each member of Team Taka represents someone who was royally screwed over by the shinobi system in new and unique ways, but the manga drops the ball on really exploring that with any of the non-Sasuke members. I do think letting them be a little more complex and fleshed out would have made Sasuke's eventual rampage seem more justified/understandable... idk what i'd do with them during the war arc but i think a cool option would have been to let itachi meet the whole team, since he sort of appears out of nowhere to be like WHAT IF WE WERE PRO-ESTABLISHMENT INSTEAD? and someone needed to tell him to shut up. or i guess i can stop being an itachi stan on main and say they probably should have had a talk with naruto "i will be hokage" uzumaki about their perspectives on their villages' abuse

as for their post-canon lives... idk, it seems sort of counterintuitive for any of them to have gone back to orochimaru but at the same time i kind of dig soccer mom orochimaru LMAO. i'm not 100% sure what else i'd do with them, except maybe have them accompany sasuke on his redemption journey? for fic reasons i think it'd be fun to have karin move to konoha to let naruto bother her, but if tasked with rewriting canon, i'd want her to take with suigetsu and juugo and it's less satisfying for those two to end up in konoha lol

More "de-aged Taka and T7 end up in the Warring Clans Era as Founders' wards" AU

“That’s a thing?” you ask. The answer is yes.

Uh. Kind of. Deaging Team Seven for the sake of tossing them back in time for a Founder to adopt is pretty common, but I’m trash for Taka so this AU started with me brainstorming the asshole team.

I am falling more and more in love with the idea of Tobirama ending up with custody of Team Taka somehow. He’s a science dad, but like. Marginally more ethical than Orochimaru.

Everyone around them is like "This is a terrible idea and it's all going to end horribly" and he's just like "Ah, these are now my children."

I've read so many "Team Seven time-travels and is de-aged, get adopted by the Founders" or "a Founder time-travels forward and adopts Naruto, subsequently picking up the others" and they're good but I now want the same plot with an even more dysfunctional collection of... eldritch mishaps? The AO3 feel of "I want this fic I just read, again, but a step to the left so it feels fresh and new"

I'm considering the tent of tranquility idea (courtesy of @sloaners​) and I've come to the decision that Tobirama's... probably going to end up with Several Holes in it, and burns, and cuts, because Karin and Suigetsu never stop fighting, and if they're fighting, they're not paying attention to how soon Juugo's going to lose his grip on control.

"Hm. Tobirama?" "Anija." "Where did you get children?" "They showed up." "One of them looks like an Uchiha." "He does." "Two of them are trying to kill each other." "That's normal." "Are the Uchiha going to accuse us of stealing a clan child?" "Probably." "...Tobirama, did you steal these children?" "No."

(It's not kidnapping if they show up and break into your house first.)

(Also none of them are particularly pressed to ditch the Senju and find their clans. Maybe eventually. Not now.)

They’re assholes but Karin is, even at Supposedly Age Three, babbling at Tobirama about proper lab protocol and chemical reactions and isn’t that just the most adorable thing?

Very few people find Karin as adorable as Tobirama does, because Karin knows more ways to kill a person than most adult shinobi, because most adult shinobi don’t know about things like flesh-eating diseases and specialty poisons from the other side of the continent that can only be refined via chemical processes that won’t exist for another three decades.

Juugo is a sweetheart. Best child. Then he loses his mind but it’s okay, Sasuke is there. Do the Senju trust the clearly-Uchiha child to control the much larger five-year-old? No. But they don’t have any better ideas right now, so.

Tobirama: Hm, we should do something about that. Karin: Here’s a list of ideas and things that have already been tried. Tobirama: Thank you, small child. Where did you get this? Karin: ... Tobirama: Fair enough, let’s see what we can do.

Suigetsu is a little terror because not only is he a Massive Jerk but he also has better control over water than most adults. Mostly because he is water. It’s very hard to find him when he’s avoiding chores.

Karin clings to Mito sometimes because Family! and then Hashirama tries to tease Tobirama about being upset that one of his students/children has ditched him. Hashirama ends up moping in a corner because Tobirama snaps at him, unsurprisingly.

IDK if we have like any canon for Touka beyond skill with genjutsu, but going off of the fanon that she used a naginata, I’m going to say that Suigetsu keeps trying to challenge her to Blade Fights and she’s just like Neat, A Tiny Murder Machine.

Sasuke is very quiet for the most part and Dramatically Broods On Rooftops And In Trees and Hashirama is just like YES YOU REMIND ME OF MY BROTHER AND ALSO MY BEST FRIEND and Sasuke hides.

Sasuke does not need another Naruto, thank you.

Sasuke ends up hanging out with Mito, I think? Like yeah, sure, she’s an Uzumaki, but she’s chill and refined and calm and she has really good tea in stock. Sure he has to learn fuuinjutsu to have an excuse to hang out with her, but that’s fine. It’s interesting. Karin does it too, sometimes.

tbh that probably leaves Hashirama to hang out with Juugo? Juugo isn’t great at Excite but he is great at nature so I feel like Hashirama would be stars-in-eyes about Juugo talking to birds the way Hashirama talks to trees, and Hashirama just gets him a chicken coop like HERE. FRIENDS.

But back to the suspected child theft.

Hashirama is like “That is... clearly an Uchiha. They are going to find out, Tobirama! Someone is going to figure out we have--” “Sasuke, show him your other eye. Yeah, the one you cover.” “...” “Okay, go back to playing.” “...Tobirama.” “Yeah?” “That was a Rinnegan.” “You know those rumors that the only way to get a Rinnegan is to mix the Uchiha and Senju bloodlines?” “It’s true?” “No idea, Sasuke won’t tell me anything about his parents other than their names, and he’s three, but even the chance of it being true means we have an arguable claim.” “...that’s not going to be enough to convince the Uchiha.” “The theory is but one weapon of many in the upcoming battle of wits.” “Tobirama--” “Now if you’ll excuse me, Anija, I need to go make sure Suigetsu doesn’t flood the training grounds again.”

tbh I can’t remember who made the original comment in canon about the Rinnegan being achieved via Senju/Uchiha babies but it’s funny to use here so I’ll pretend it’s a common rumor that nobody actually believes

MEANWHILE WITH THE UCHIHA Madara found and took custody of Team Seven and company, mostly because they’re like... jounin-level despite being less than three feet tall.

It involves a lot of Madara going "I want My New Children to love me!" and being sorely disappointed by half of them. Poor fucker got stuck with Naruto, Sakura, Sai, Kakashi, Yamato, and Obito.

(KakaYamaObito are deaged by the time-travel to 10-13ish. The kids are deaged to 3-4. Everyone has memories to just after the fourth war or so.)

Karin sensed T7 and tagalong pretty much the second they popped out of Kamui, and told Sasuke, but he correctly guessed that Naruto would hunt him down eventually, and said they should enjoy the peace and quiet while they had it.

Sai pulls emotionless creepy smiles in an attempt to freak out Madara but since Madara's whole thing initially was "less children in war," he's... mostly just sad. Izuna wants to know who made his brother cry.

Madara makes a vaguely misogynistic comment that's typical for the period and Sakura just. Breaks his tibia.

Naruto is genuinely trying to treat Madara with the kind of respect a caretaker that Attempts To Care And Do Good By Them deserves, because Naruto is a good egg, but he's... three again. Which means he's a Hellion.

The literal toddlers (Naruto and Sakura are three-ish, Sai is four-ish) are, in fact, toddlers, so nobody really expects them to be able to do anything. Nobody bothers to test them beyond the basics of like. Can walk? Can talk? Can maybe hold knife? Like don’t get me wrong, they’re very competent toddlers, but their hands can barely wrap around a kunai. Their bodies are tiny. Their bones only just stopped being soft!

That said, the “tweens” (re: adults who got deaged but Less) have to get tested for their skills. Kakashi downplays himself to what he imagines a semi-competent eleven-year-old to be capable of. He thinks of, like, Neji maybe? Good, but not suspiciously good.

Obito enters an intangible state and refuses to participate. He has a Mangekyo. His body is half-Zetsu. Stop bothering him. He doesn’t want to do anything. They assign him babysitting duty for Team Seven since he can obviously defend pretty well, and Kakashi vouches for his abilities as a fighter.

Yamato decides to try to be just a little worse than Kakashi but at one point he panics and does Mokuton on instinct and now the entire Uchiha compound is screeching because did they just steal a Main Family Senju kid by accident?

Yamato: Should I tell them I was a science experiment? Kakashi: No.

Pranks galore! None of the other time-travelers even try to stop Naruto, except maybe Yamato.

Obito at the Uchiha compound is mostly "I don't want to participate" and then just uses Kamui to be intangible until people leave him alone. If it's not another time-traveler or Madara, he's not interested. He doesn't even care that much about Sai or Yamato, actually, so if it's not an original T7 member, he doesn't care, and if it's Madara, he's just here to make things Difficult.

The Kyuubi wanders up to the Uchiha compound one day and everyone's preparing for a battle, even Madara isn't confident that he can-- [BANG] "KURAMA!" [delighted squealing]

Naruto now has a pet. The entire clan is terrified. Kurama pokes his nose at Naruto's stomach and disappears into the memory of a seal.

Madara, frantically writing a letter to Hashirama "What do I do if my toddler is possessed?!?"

Hashirama: You have a toddler?!?!?! OMG you should organize playdates with Tobirama's kids! Madara: I'M GOING TO QUESTION THAT LATER, PLEASE HELP WITH THE POSSESSION THING

Kurama hunts down Naruto, and the Jinchuuriki situation is very much in the realm of "Dis Mine" Also a bit of "If I'm in the brat, there's at least one Mangekyo user in hearing distance who can and will risk his life to prevent brainwashing. (Kakashi. It’s Kakashi.)

Naruto: Kurama's one of my best friends! Every time traveler: Yeah, that tracks. Madara: [teakettle screeching]

Per @firebirdeternal​: I'm just loving the visual of Giant Nightmare Terror Kurama kneeling down and pressing his nose to Naruto's Smol Chubby Toddler self and closing his eyes while Naruto pets him and giggles and every single battle-ready Uchiha is just. "wat"

Everybody else: Cool so Madara adopted a witch Uchiha Elders: We need to be careful of this horrible creature The younger generation of Uchiha: Okay that was weirdly serene and adorable and frankly the brat is really likeable when he's not being adhd as hell I think this is actually pretty dope.

Madara really wants to be a Good Dad but he has no idea how he ended up being "a dad" in the first place. He just! He cares a lot about this random assortment of kids! Some of them are from prominent clans and there should be search parties for the Senju kid with the Mokuton, or the Hatake brat, or the Uzumaki that doesn't look Uzumaki but definitely feels Uzumaki.... and SURE the only Uchiha of the bunch is a stranger who hates him for no reason Madara can come up with, but! He wants to be a good authority figure!

At least the Uzumaki appreciates that he's trying.

Seriously, though, there are clan kids and nobody’s looking for them, what’s up with that?

Kakashi still has a prize copy of Icha Icha and nobody in the Uchiha compound does a thorough check of his reading material until like three months in.

He is blamed for Naruto developing the Oiroke, because where ELSE would a toddler get such ideas? (Yamato and Obito both tell him he brought this on himself.)

Naruto waits until a Big Important Meeting lets out, something about tithes or a merchant contract, and just pulls a Harem no Jutsu in front of the entire group of Elders And Main Family. First he does a Mass Shadow Clone, which makes everyone turn on Sharingan because Fancy New Techniques to steal! Sure, they were late on the shadow clones, but the kid is clearly gearing up for something! The something is Oiroke.

Anime Nosebleeds everywhere. Most of the elders were hit. Izuna was hit. Madara is not bleeding from the nose, but he is very upset about having semi-accidentally sharingan-memorized his weird adoptee’s Sexy Older Female Alter Ego. There is yelling.

Naruto’s like “Oh, I missed some!” and decides to try again with Reverse Harem no Jutsu because there are old ladies among the Elders, and maybe some straight women representing a guild, and maybe some gay guys he missed! Madara is still not bleeding. (He’s very demi and tbh Naruto only would have succeeded if he’d tried to use Hashirama’s face. Naruto does not know this. He just figures Madara is ace like Sasuke and that no variant is going to work.)

Izuna gets another nosebleed and is just like “Well, this is not how I planned on coming out as bi, but--” “Izuna, I literally do not care about you being bi as long as one of us has an heir at some point, I’m more upset about the fact that my child has been corrupted!”

Back in the Senju compound, there is... a lot of screaming, honestly, but every time Karin and Suigetsu start trying to kill each other again, Tobirama just shrugs and tells them not to break anything.

Very easy-going caretaker, really. He's got some very deadly toddlers in hand, but they're still just toddlers.

Sasuke: Yeah, I might want to go see my clan at some point. Suigetsu: Yeah, I might want to go see my clan at some point. Karin, clinging to Mito: Yeah, I want to go see my clan at some point. Juugo: Please never, ever take me to my clan. Ever. Please. I'll stay with Sasuke, thank you.

Naruto breaks out of the Uchiha compound the first time he enters Sage Mode, several months in (it took a while to get the privacy) because he feels Sasuke and lbr if Naruto knows where Sasuke is, nothing will stop him.

The Uchiha clansmen cannot catch the errant toddler. They fail to inform Madara until Naruto is already in Senju territory because nobody wanted to admit the toddler outmaneuvered them.

Naruto wasn’t sure how to get into the Senju Compound safely so he just goes full Kyuubi, bounds over the wall screaming SASUKEEEEE at the top of his lungs, and then shrinks back down to Tiny Brat size so he could hug his Bestest Friend Ever and cling like a limpet while Sasuke just sighs and stares at the wall.

Sakura ran after him.

Sai painted a bird and Yamato dragged Kakashi onto it to chase Naruto, because Kakashi is at a point of zen regarding Naruto's bullshit and fully trusts the kid to not die.

Obito refuses to look up from whatever he's doing and asks people why they think he cares.

“We told you to look after the toddlers!” “Why would you do that? Seems like poor planning on your part.”

Disappears when nobody's looking. Waits until the Ruckus at the Senju compound (where T7 has crashed in to tackle-hug Sasuke and Madara followed in and proceeded to get shouty, and nobody's dead or battling because they're too confused and also it's a comedy) has started to calm down, and then teleports in and demonstrates Mokuton just to make Madara's life harder when the Senju Elders start demanding answers.

His energy is very "I am here to make Madara's life harder" and Madara still doesn't know what he did wrong.

Madara: That brat has a Sharingan! Tobirama: Well THAT one has Mokuton! Obito: Yamato has it too. [angry teakettle noises]

Madara's first response to seeing Sasuke is to turn to Izuna and point aggressively at the toddler while making a tea-kettle noise "He looks just like you!" "He's four, he barely looks like anything!"

Naruto, tugging at Madara's hakama: You need to make a village with Hashirama so I can see Sasuke more often, cuz I don't wanna ditch you guys, but I gotta see Sasuke! He's my best friend! Madara, who is aware that he could fight this child but really doesn't want to, and also knows that a tantrum thrown by Naruto or Sasuke is capable of leveling mountains: Right, yes, we'll get right on that.

tbh Madara wants the village anyway but "The bijuu-whisperer said he wants it to happen" is a great way to push things forward.

guess i’m meta-ing about sasusaku anyway so it’s time to dredge back up an old pet peeve.

if you think Sakura should have moved on from Sasuke and lost interest in him you do not understand Sakura as a character at all.

Sakura already didn’t spend her life pining over Sasuke, unable to do anything. Sakura said that if Sasuke left her, it wouldn’t matter if she were surrounded by people, because to her she’d be just alone as he was. He did. She was. And then she got up and she continued living anyway.

After Sasuke left, Sakura went to the already-hokage, cantankerous Tsunade and convinced the woman to take her on as an apprentice when Tsunade already had one.

After Sasuke left, she saved Kankuro and fought a member of the Akatsuki and won.

After she found out Sasuke wasn’t a captive of Orochimaru, she helped protect the civilians in Pein’s attack.

When she found out Sasuke had gone too far, lost his way such that she didn’t think he could come back, she was the one who went to try to kill him herself, and she refused to let anyone help her.

Despite all that, Sakura still loved Sasuke. She still missed him, and she still hurt deeply when he was gone and when he pulled further and further away. The reason that Sakura didn’t just “move on and get over him” is because Sakura didn’t just have a crush on Sasuke. She didn’t just ‘like’ him, she was in love with Sasuke, and you don’t just ‘get over’ the people that you love.

When you say ‘oh, I wish Sakura would have just moved on from Sasuke and lost interest!’, you’re conflating love with infatuation and attraction and not acknowledging that Sakura didn’t just have a fleeting crush on Sasuke (like Naruto did on Sakura), but a mature and deep love.

Now, Sakura never went crawling back to Sasuke and tried to endure and accept his darkness and hatred because of her love: she already acted like a mature and strong adult, continuing on with life despite her heartbreak, and recognizing that no matter how much she loved Sasuke, it wasn’t enough to save him from darkness (the second ‘confession’ she says after positive interactions with Sasuke that clearly show he’s not consumed by darkness like he once was, and even then openly admits she knows she was never able to help him). She doesn’t get together with him, nor even try to, until after he reforms, and we can assume that if he never reformed, she’d never get with him.

But he did.

It wouldn’t make sense at all, and would not suit Sakura as a character at all, for her to reject or move on from him once he did that. She’d either have not loved him at all - in which case she would have become disaffected with him much like Ino does after he leaves and becomes too dark - or have to be an intensely vindictive person determined to ‘punish’ Sasuke by depriving him of her feelings. Which, considering how narcissistic that is, would still probably equal her not loving him in the first place.

So basically, this whole concept that still persists in fandom to this day that Sakura would only be a strong woman/”is only a strong woman except for” if she ‘moved on from’ Sasuke or rejected him ignores both that she’s already a strong woman who picked up the pieces of her life and continued on despite her heart being broken without letting those feelings rule her life and choices, and that she truly loves him, not just as some little flight of fancy or childish crush.

While Kabuto has a technique that lets him recover quickly from injuries, it uses up a lot of his Chakra, and his preference for close-range combat means he’ll get hurt a lot and potentially badly while fighting if he fails to dodge. He doesn’t have nearly as many long-range techniques (aside from genjutsu) as close-range techniques. Relatedly, he can burn through Chakra quickly if he isn’t strategic about its use or if he gets too cocky in a fight and doesn’t monitor it well. Some of his Sage Mode techniques are double-edged swords, as they hurt him and others. He wants to learn kenjutsu, but at this time he’s only really good with smaller weapons, particularly kunai. Additionally, Kabuto’s mental health is bad, and it would be easy to take him out if you manage to figure out his specific triggers. He’ll also be rather self-sacrificial if he’s with someone he really cares about i.e. Orochimaru and will take blows for them, even if it’ll really harm him.

This boy as a boyfriend?

This is a fluff blog it’s all I do.

Although he’s basically married to his work, and devotes a lot of his time to Orochimaru. Kabuto will always make time for you, even if it’s him doing paperwork and you’re just cuddling into him.

He will give you...kind of strange gifts. Not really the norm, but they’re gifts! If you count medical supplies as gifts that is...

He’s probably just trying to get you into medical work so you can spend more time together when he has to work late or doesn’t have time at all.

Sasuke has no idea how a charismatic and kind person like you got with someone like Kabuto but he doesn’t question it. Out loud.

Kabuto is sort of like a cat, he considers being in the same room as you hanging out. When he wants attention he will go out of his way to butt his head into your heads or arms, he wants the attention.

You probably live in the base too since Orochimaru really doesn’t care what his students do as long as they follow orders, so you probably give Kabuto more motivation to get his work done to spend time with you.

He has probably given you snake as pet gifts. That’s the only pet you’ll ever have in this base I’m sorry.

The pale man sighed softly at the child who's head laid silently on his thigh, soft snores came from the child as he turned softly. Blond messy hair getting messier.

Orochimaru glanced down in his lap to the boy who was currently messing with the blonds plushy face. A calm face present on him as the dark haired child played with the blond locks tempted to yank so the blond could wake up and they could play.

The snake like man chuckled to scared to move and wake up Sasuke's sleepy friend. He meant no harm when he said it was peaceful when Naruto was sleeping. The man could only take so much of the flamboyant child.

In the end, he adored all the children though. Some called him a creep for quitting his old high paying job just to watch over small children. Most of the time he tried to let it not get to him but others, he couldn't help it.

His old job caused pain to not just others but himself too. There were so many times he wished he could just die like a normal human, but it wasn't easy. It never was. However, now he was happy even if sometimes he felt like he was missing something. Something to make him complete.

He blinked back into realization when the blond stirred in his sleep as Sasuke repeatedly smacked his face with his small chubby hand. The Uchiha was getting bored by the second but clearly he was sleepy. The man sighed and lightly grabbed the boys hand who looked up at him with a small pout and teary eyes. He yawned which only made it worst.

Orochimaru smiled softly before putting his hand in the small boy's hair petting the soft dark locks.

"Hey hey, let him sleep little one. You need to nap too. If you wake him now he'll be upset."

He hummed. The small boy opened his mouth before the man manuvered his large hands under the small children and stood up. The blond laid curled in his arm as the man carried them over to the others who were napping in the blankets under the window were they could feel the warm sun on their soft skin.

The Uchiha laid his head on the man's strong chest nuzzling softly making the man hum. He looked at the others thinking where to lay down the sleeping Uzumaki and sleepy Uchiha. He shouldn't separate them, they hated to be separated from each other and he knew Sasuke hated to be trapped by Sakura so he hummed.

He glanced down at the small children. Shikimaru laid with the round Choji next to him, snoring cutely. Ino hand her small arms under Sakura's shirt liking the warmth. At first Orochimaru thought it was quite weird that the small blond hair girl did it knowing the small pink haired one whined about it but eventually Sakura stopped fighting her friend. 

The man chuckled a little at the memory.

He glanced at the blankets seeing squirming. He stood up from his spot putting the book down letting Gaara read it to the other's with cute difficulty. Till he eventually let Lee help him who read was happy to help. The man maid his way silently over to the blankets and stopped by them. He tilted his head curious as to what the small girls were doing.

'Hopefully nothing grown.'

He thought to himself with a soft laugh. He guessed that the small girls heard him because the small fight stopped before Sakura jumped from the blankets on to his clutching the beautiful komodo that hung on his firm body. He laughed and held her as Ino pouted sitting up.

"Oro-chan! Tell her to stop putting her hands in my shirt!"

"It's cold!"

The small blond shouted back at the small pinkette who glared. Orochimaru listened to them bicker waiting for the moment.

"Just warm yourself up!"

"But you're chubby and it feels nice!"

Sakura sniffled at the word 'chubby'. She never really liked it. All of them were chubby to the man but they all were cute. Chubby wasn't a bad thing. He didn't mind having a heavier girlfriend because chubby wasn't being fat. He sighed at the two petting their heads making a mess out of their hair making them look up at him.

"Ah girls girls.."

He said softly with a soft chuckle.

He saw Gaara roll over a bit softly bumping Neji who frowned a bit but other than that he stayed asleep. He smiled laying the blond and Raven haired boys in the empty spot watching how the blond almost immediately cuddled up to his friend. Sasuke didn't last long against the cuddle monster he called his friend.

Orochimaru smiled triumphantly before standing back up and stretching. He then looked at the children doing roll call in his head.

Hinata. Check.

Neji. Check.

Gaara. Check.

Naruto and Sasuke. Check

Ino. Check.

Sakura. Check.

Kankuro. Check.

Kiba. Check.

Lee. Check.

Shikimaru. Check.

And Choji. Check.

He hummed before silently making his way to the door and slipping out the room silently. They'd be sleep for a while so he should get lunch ready. Hopefully Kabuto would be back soon considering the silver haired male helped with the chores. He trailed to the kitchen walking down the large hallway.

He hummed to himself before entering the large kitchen. He prepared lunch not even looking back when the door to the large house unlocked from the outside and opened. Just from the smell he knew it was the silverette. He smiled watching the stove full of pancakes, sausages and eggs. Sniffing softly to make sure the toast didn't burn inside the oven.

The teen huffed hauling in the many bags of food and clothes he brought. Orochimaru chuckled at the teen and with a smug smile and turned to him crossing his arms.

"So, what did you bring home maid boy"

He joked smiling innocently at the glared the teen shot at him as he pulled in the last bag closing the large door behind him and locking it with the key he usually kept around his neck just so he wouldn't leave it anywhere or have one of the kids steal it from him.

"Peachy. I had to steal a buggy and ride it here to get all this stuff here in one piece. How are the kids?"

He asked pulling bags into the kitchen and with the man's help they put everything away. He laid the bags of clothes next to the couch for them to grab in a bit. Kabuto placed the three gallons of milk in the fridge. They only needed so much only cause a special blond liked to stoop in the kitchen at night.

Orochimaru glanced at a shirt in on of the bags and pulled it out with his gentle fingers reading the front.

Destiny Baby!

He laughed loudly covering his mouth and holding on to the counter as a smile came to the teens face as he turned off the stove and oven. The shirt had a small deer on it with a  crown on it's head. How could he not laugh, it was cute. Kabuto pulled out plates for the children and started placing the food on the clean dishes.

He hummed at the laughing man.

"Found that for Neji. I think he'll love it."

Orochimaru got the last of his giggles out before wiping his teary eyes. He nodded. No doubt. That's was if Lee didn't steal it from him. The man sighed before looking at the teen again.

"So how was school?"

He asked. The boy smiled a bit more as a soft blush came to his face. The action made the man curious obviously seeing as the male tilted his head. Kabuto never really blushed so why today.

"Was there a pretty girl?"

He teased making smoochy kisses. He chuckled. Kabuto flushed even more before throwing a sausage at the man who caught it in his mouth and ate it with puffy cheeks. Kabuto huffed finishing the plates.

"Yes. Really pretty."

"Oh?~ You know her name yet lover boy?"

The teen looked at him with a soft smile. He spoke softly after it playing with his hands nervously.

"Her name, as I heard when she introduced herself was (F/n) (L/n)."

They’ve been making good progress.

Granted, Sasuke isn’t an immediate member of the Byakugan project, but every so often, he has a spare moment to observe. They begin with the basics: develop her language to a satisfactory level in order to communicate, and then dive into testing. B1 retains her doe-eyed curiosity, and as Sasuke had seen while still in her cell, she already knows how to activate her tinkered biology. That alone is impressive.

It gives him just a sliver of hope. First level prototypes are never success stories. Some go farther than others, get more right the first time around...but in the end, there’s always improvements to be made. Sasuke himself comes from a long line of Sharingan models. The one previous him, pet named Itachi by Orochimaru, had been the most promising specimen yet...but then there’d been a fault in his immune system. So then along came Sasuke, part of the next batch of their kind. He’d been allowed to visit his ‘elder brother’, and the two had bonded almost immediately.

Itachi, however, is a rare exception. Older, outdated projects rarely get to see the light of day after their replacements are awakened.

And that’s exactly what he fears for B1.

She hasn’t been given a human name yet. They don’t bother until after a few checkmarks have been passed. Language, several health inspections, adequate socialization. Until she can prove she’s worth the sentimentality of a name...she’ll remain B1.

Little does Orochimaru know...this is the project Sasuke has been waiting for.

Finally, a prototype that can see through almost anything. Intended for use as spies and intelligence gatherers able to infiltrate without stepping foot within their target buildings. They don’t even have to look in the proper direction. Nearly three hundred sixty-five degrees of vision. A biological impossibility...until aligned with Orochimaru’s terrifying intellect and passion for taking human beings apart...and putting them back together in new, interesting, and disgusting ways.

Sasuke has wanted out for a while now. And in all honesty...given his own advanced DNA, he could likely do so and survive. But there’s just one problem...while he could brute force his way out...his brother can’t. Too weakened by his suppressed immune system, he’d never make it, even with Sasuke’s help.

Hence needing the Byakugan. Someone who can see every nook and cranny of this place...help them plot the perfect path. See guards coming from across the complex. With her gaze and his, Sasuke’s sure they could do it. Nothing could be hidden from her eyes.

Escape...be free, at last. No longer be lab rats, pet projects, weapons. Just...people.

...but it will take time. Hinata has to learn to control her abilities. Hone them. Focus them. And until she can communicate, he can’t begin to offer his plan. But so too must he be cautious. If she tattles, even by honest mistake...it would be their ruin. Any chance to make a break for it would be cut off. Itachi would be put under lock and key, Sasuke likely stripped of what little freedom he has. He’s played his obedient part well: at the moment, he’s the snake-like scientist’s favorite. Allowed to assist in projects, know their details...even help plan out new assignments given by their employers. Until the last possible moment, he can’t risk losing the loose leash his creator affords him.

Brought into one of the main testing halls, B1 is being given yet another physical. Sat atop a cot, legs dangling over the sides, she opens her mouth to be examined.

“Dental development...normal,” Orochimaru murmurs. “No signs of tonsillitis. Vocal chords intact, with minimal stress. Such a quiet little thing...we must put those to the test, mustn’t we?” he asks, giving her a sickening smile.

Still learning her mannerisms, B1’s facial muscles flutter as she attempts to mirror the expression.

Something about it tenses Sasuke’s gut.

“So far, so good...there seems to be little to no physical abnormality despite her accelerated growth process,” Orochimaru then goes on, setting his tools on a sanitized tray and removing his gloves. “It will be good to finally get language drilled into her, see how her cognitive development fared. Something about her air has me a bit worried she may be a bit...behind.”

“Would it be prudent to pair her with another subject?” Sasuke offers quietly. “One already versed in language? Having someone to bounce off of and teach her socially might accelerate the process.”

Considering that, Orochimaru hums thoughtfully. “...I may consider it. I don’t like mixing projects. The less they know of one another, the better. Maybe one of my more committed interns would be up to the task.”

“If I ever have spare time, I could give it a try.”

A slender brow perks. “You? I didn’t think you the teacher sort, my dear.”

“Maybe it’s a skill I need to develop.”

His creator considers him a long moment. “...very well. I’ll adjust your clearances. For now, you may take a few minutes and escort her back to her cell. Just be sure to avoid any stimuli that might negatively impact her. For now it’s early enough she might latch onto any small thing and lead herself awry.”

“Yes, of course.”

As Orochimaru takes his leave, Sasuke steps up to B1’s cot. Once again, her eyes are active, looking over her surroundings without a single flicker of her eyes.

It’s still unnerving…

“Time to go.”

Veins receding, she turns to behold him. “...yes,” she replies simply, obediently. Carefully, she slips to the cool floor, her feet bare. For now, all she’s afforded for clothes are undergarments and a plain gown that brushes her knees. At a glance, it might look like she’s simply a patient at a very bizarre hospital.

If only it were that simple.

Walking by her side, Sasuke guides her back through the maze of corridors. By some grace, the first she saw him beyond the glass, she didn’t react as animatedly as when they’d met. Her excitement, somehow, had been tempered...as though she knew it would be bad to reveal the connection she felt to him as a fellow subject.

Part of him assumed she’d simply forgotten, or...felt betrayed enough by his leaving to repress a reaction. And yet he couldn’t help but wonder if, somehow, she really did know not to give away their silent conversation.

“You did well today,” he praises, keeping his language basic, enunciated. “Orochimaru is pleased with your progress, B1. Please keep up the good work.”

As he speaks, she turns her head to watch him, studying him - as always - with that eerily blank look. But she offers no verbal reply, seemingly stuck watching him. Observing.

Learning. Or so he hopes.

A palm to a scanner opens the door to her room. “Here we are. Please go inside.”

After the briefest of pauses, she steps in, and he makes to shut it.

“Sasuke.”

He freezes.

Keen, she catches the blunder. “Sasuke,” she repeats again, tone lifting in urgency.

“Yes, that is my name,” he replies, tone careful.

“...name?”

“Yes.”

“...my name?”

“You do not have a name. You are B1. The first of the Byakugan project.”

Frustration furrows her brow. “...my name.”

“No, Sasuke is my name.”

A huff of breath, and then she returns to him. Hands take his wrist, and plant his hand to the plane of her upper chest.

“...my name.”

...wait. Does she...want him to name her? Eyes flickering over her face, he scrambles for an answer.

“...you can’t tell anyone.”

“...can’t tell.”

“It’s a secret.”

Her eyes brighten. “...secret…!”

A moment more to think, and then. “...Hinata.”

“Hi...na...ta.”

“...do you like it?”

“Hinata. Hinata…!”

“...that is your name. Keep it hidden. Secret.”

“Secret.”

Daring a hint of a smile, he carefully removes his hand. “...I have to go. Remember, Hinata...secret.”

“Yes.”

“Can I trust you with secrets?”

“...yes…!”

“...good.” Retreating, he lets her door close, B1 - no, Hinata - watching him carefully. Perhaps this can be a test of a kind. See if she realizes the idea - and the weight - of a secret.

If she does...if she comes to trust him more than their creator...perhaps this plan will work.

But for now...patience is key.

He can be patient.

I was going through your blog and I saw a post where you said Itachi was your favorite naruto character, like me. I come across different posts on tumblr that claim Itachi to be a bad person and a psychotic abusive murderer and I wanted to know what you thought of this since he is also your favorite character.

Well, Itachi isn’t my top favourite character, because I have a lot of favourite characters, but he certainly is my favourite antagonist. Yes, that’s right: antagonist.

Note: Before I answer, let me just clarify that this is my opinion, and my opinion only. You can choose to agree or disagree with this because I am not claiming any of the following facts to be accurate. Perception varies from person to person and mine will probably be different from yours. Just don’t be a dick about it.

THIS IS GONNA BE LONG BECAUSE I REALLY WANT TO COVER ALL ASPECTS OF ITACHI’S CHARACTER AND MY PERSONAL VIEW OF HIM

I think, anon, that you want me to justify whether Itachi was really a good guy, as opposed to all the blogs that claim him to be this evil person. Sadly, I cannot say Itachi was “good”. I don’t think that after killing so many people (innocent or not) and being responsible for what Sasuke became, Itachi cannot fit the definition of a “good” person. I don’t think of him as some sort of ninja Jesus that people make him out to be.

However, I don’t think Itachi is a “bad” person as these blogs think him to be. No, Itachi’s character is a lot more complex than to just label him as a “bad” guy. The fact that these blogs that you mentioned would call Itachi an abusive, psychopathic murderer is redundant and means that they missed the entire point of his character arc. I mean just look at this panel:

Does this look like a psychotic murderer to you? Do you really think Itachi enjoyed killing all those people, even his parents? How does this make him ‘psychotic’? His father, the one who was about to be killed by him, called him out to be a “kind” (gentle) child and understood what he was doing.

And how can we ignore the fact that Itachi was around the age of thirteen when he undertook this mission? You might argue “But hey, this is the Naruto universe. A lot of fucked up shit happened to little children, Itachi isn’t special.” But what was Naruto’s generation doing when they were around that age? Babysitting, finding lost pets, weeding out gardens, helping civilians out with their shopping. Also, no thirteen year old kid should be faced with a decision to murder his entire clan. And he was just twenty one when he died, giving us an entirely different view on how he lived his life in such a short amount of time.

Itachi’s motivations are a lot different from the motivations of other Naruto villains (yes, I consider Itachi as a Naruto villain). He never wanted power, he never did this for himself, his goals weren’t selfish per se. He wanted to avoid a potential war that was most certainly going to be a consequence of the Uchiha’s coup d’etat, which a lot of people seem to forget. Kill hundreds of people in order to save thousands of lives. It was either this, or that. And he had no other better option at that point of time. The only other way was Shisui’s Kotoamatsukami, a plan which also wasn’t that dependable and failed because of the lovely Danzo Shimura. What could he, as a kid, possibly do when even the elders of the village couldn’t figure a way out?

Itachi was faced with a horrible decision. What he did wasn’t morally right, at all. But it was necessary because there was nothing else they could’ve done. Time was running out and a lot was at stake.

Again, in no way am I trying to paint Itachi as a saint, when he clearly isn’t. I am just trying to say how fucked up of a situation Itachi was in and what measures he had to resort to. We were told time and again in the manga that he was a prodigy, a pacifist who hated war, and that he would grow to be a great shinobi (and who apparently had the wisdom of the Hokage by the age of seven, which I personally believe is a bit too much of a stretch on Kishi’s side, but that’s a rant for another day). The way his life ended is sad in its own way. He could’ve been so much more, but he had to live his life as a criminal, have his name tarnished forever. 

Now for his treatment of Sasuke, which prompts many to call him sadistic and abusive. Keep in my mind that this is, again, my interpretation of what he did and why he did it.

His treatment of Sasuke is his character’s biggest flaw. By solely focusing on directing Sasuke towards killing him so that Sasuke could be considered as a ‘hero’ of the village, he forgot about Sasuke’s mental state completely. He thought he was keeping Sasuke ‘safe’, but in reality, somewhere along the line, his goal became more about keeping Sasuke ‘alive’. He thought he could do it completely on his own, shoulder all that responsibility on himself and in the end, he just fucked up. Big time. 

What I believe is that starting from the Uchiha massacre, Itachi being at a very unstable state of mind, came to this conclusion that only harsh actions yield results and that only he himself could take such harsh decisions. This lead to his terrible choice of mentally torturing Sasuke, so that Sasuke could stay on this path of ‘revenge’ and ‘justice’.

The first time, right after Sasuke discovered Itachi standing over the corpses of their parents, it’s sort of understandable (key words: sort of) that Itachi made him go through Tsukuyomi because he really wanted Sasuke to see him as a bad person: as someone who represents all the bad in this world and that killing Itachi would be the only way to get the clan justice. He didn’t want Sasuke to think less of his clan. These panels show how hard it must have been for Itachi to do so:

It shows how much it hurts Itachi in order to make Sasuke go through all this. Calling him ‘sadistic’ is ridiculous because he isn’t deriving any pleasure from this far from it. There’s no doubt that the next time they met and Itachi used the Tsukuyomi yet again, he would have felt great regret. It is, again, something Itachi felt was a necessity in order to set Sasuke on the path of revenge. Of course it was wrong. Of course it wasn’t justified. But it was what he felt was right, because according to him, only extreme measures work. He saw how weak Sasuke was even now and Itachi felt that pushing him would get him to desire more strength.

Alas, Sasuke then decided to go to Orochimaru for more power, of all people. So now Itachi had two goals for Sasuke: have Sasuke kill him, and free Sasuke from Orochimaru’s curse mark. He achieved both these goals in their final fight. Keep in mind that Itachi’s flaw is still at play. He thought that only he could lead Sasuke to his future as a ‘hero’. His love for Sasuke made him blind to what he was doing and how his actions were affecting his younger brother. The fact that he wanted to keep all of this from Sasuke and even in his death wanted to keep him away from Tobi tells great volume as to how much he had planned for him.

Another important thing to note is that Itachi never saw himself as a good person. He hated himself for what he had to do. He barely kept himself alive so that Sasuke, an Uchiha, could kill him because he felt that would be justice for Sasuke, as well as the ones he killed in the massacre. He felt that it was the perfect end for him, to die by the hands of an Uchiha.

This was all supposed to be over for Itachi but then he was reanimated and was made to see how much he had screwed up. His final confrontation with Sasuke is what sealed it for me. 

“You never have to forgive me…”

He recognised his fault, he realised where he went wrong, and he understands if Sasuke doesn’t want to forgive him for what he has done to him because he knows what he did was wrong. He acknowledged it. And for me, personally, I feel this was the perfect end to his character arc. 

I am a sucker for villains and that’s what drew me to Itachi in the first place. I was initially unsure about the revelation that he was “the good guy all along”, because I really liked him as a baddie and I did not see this twist coming. But knowing how hard this must’ve been for him, it drew me even closer to his character. 

Overall, he was a good kid forced to do terrible things for the greater good, and further made decisions that wrecked more than they fixed, even though he thought he was doing the right thing (using harsh methods). He was neither good, nor inherently evil. And he certainly wasn’t a psychopathic murderer. 

That’s all I have to say I guess.
