A little while ago while hanging out at the manor for game night, Stephanie introduced the family to another one of her current favorite artist.
This was nothing unusual, Steph had a new favorite artist almost every other week. But this one was different. It wasn't just a single person but a group that called themselves ‘Team Phantom’.
Every song was different as every song was sang by a different person. So there was a song for everyone, including Jason.
He feel in love with the soft smooth voice of ‘The Sister’. Her songs were so dreamy and melancholic, and told stories that he often couldn't understand but made him feel like if he were there doing whatever she was doing. Feeling whatever she was feeling.
It was amazing. Her voice was just so beautiful. So calming. So additive, the way it calmed the pits. He didn't know why but every time her songs played it was like the pits disappeared. And so did ever constant green haze that haunted him.
The sense of clarity he was left with when one of her songs ended was like a fuckin high and he couldn't get enough.
Long after the game night he sought after her music. Her songs. Her voice. It was his medicine and his drug. His addiction. Which sucked because just like every other addiction, withdrawal was a BITCH.
It's been six months since ‘The Sister’ has released a new song. Since ANY of Team Phantom had released any new songs. And it was really suspicious considering how consistent their schedules were. But that was okay, kinda. Life was life and maybe something happened. He'll just listen to her old songs on repeat like he's been doing for the last six months.
Is what he said until they posted a new video to their channel.
It wasn't the 3 to 4 minute animated or stagnant image music video he was uses to. Instead, it was a dark shaking video, as if someone was running. Then bright teal eyes appeared on the screen. Everything stopped for a moment. Then came the still soft and smooth but now trembling voice of ‘The Sister’.
She uttered a single word.
“Help.”
Before it ended and turned black.
It could honestly just be a prank. But something told him other wise.
Before he even decided what course of action he was going to take. A message came in through the family group chat. And from the Demon child no less.
‘We need to help Team Phantom. NOW!!!!!’
Everyone agreed.
And Jason felt very validated that he wasn't the only one secretly addicted to their music.
Now it's time to save Team Phantom.

If I Should Stay
On the 15th, as promised! Ngl, I definitely almost forgot this. I have SO many feelings about this one, y’all check the tags if you want my ramblings. Buckle up. Also, happy stabbing Caesar day.
Part 1 | . . . | Part 64 | Part 65 | Part 66
Steve works his jaw, staring at Will. “Yeah,” he whispers. Will looks down. “Hey,” Steve says gently. “That’s not on you, okay? And Jonathan’s a really great guy. He and Nancy both had a lapse in judgement. They got together a while later and they were better for each other than she and I ever were.”
“But they hurt you.”
Steve chuckles. “In the moment, sure. But I’m fine now, I’ve moved on. It surprised me just now because I didn’t expect her to react like that. I know that’s not who she is as a person, and I’m sure as soon as Joyce talks to her about it and she’s had some time to think about it, she’ll come apologize. But none of that is on you, okay?”
Will shrugs, playing with the hem of his pants.
Steve glances at Eddie, who winks and plops down cross-legged next to Will, nudging their shoulders together. “My dad’s in jail.” Will looks up at him, surprised. Eddie shrugs. “I’ve had time to process, but it took me a while to realize he just isn’t a good person. Now, my momma was an angel among women, she just had a disease. It didn’t make her a bad person. But they’re my parents, so that must mean I’m a bad person with a disease, right?”
“No!” Will says emphatically. “Just because they-” he pauses, mouth a perfect circle, before flushing and ducking his head, smiling a little. “Okay. I get it.”
“Good kid,” Eddie says fondly, ruffling his hair. “Now, back to the planning?”
“Probably,” Steve nodded. “First things first, who wants out?”
“Papa hurt El?” Mike asks. Steve nods. “Then let’s kill this fucker.”
“Language,” say all the adults, and Mike rolls his eyes.
“I’m in,” Will adds.
“Me too,” Dustin says, and Lucas nods.
Steve looks around, and all the adults present nod at him. Robin squeezes his hand, and Alli pulls him closer to her by his shoulders. “Alright, little brother,” she says. He elbows her. “What’s the plan?”
Steve sighs and looks to El. “What do you think, Ellie?”
“Everyone else is dead,” she murmurs. “But if I go into the rainbow room, I will see them.”
Steve’s heart breaks. “You don’t have to go anywhere you don’t want to.”
She smiles sadly at him. “You cannot promise me that, Steve.”
He meets Robin’s eyes above El’s head, watches her heart break. “Watch me.” He looks back to El. “I know what he put you through, El.”
“He loves me.”
Steve takes a breath, shuts his eyes for a moment. “Remember what I told you, last time you said that?”
El nods. “You thought the same thing about your parents.”
“Exactly. It took me a long time to learn, but they don’t love me. And there’s nothing I can do to change that. Even if I was perfect, that wouldn’t be enough for them. Does that make sense?”
She nods. “You love me differently from how Papa loves me.”
“Yeah,” Steve whispers. “Which do you like better?”
“Yours.”
“Do you know why?”
She thinks about it for a minute. “You love me because you see Ellie. He loves me because he sees Eleven.”
Next to him, Alli makes a broken sound. Steve reaches back to hold her hand. “Yeah, Ellie. That’s exactly right.”
“I do not want to only be Eleven anymore,” she decides. “I want to be Ellie.”
“And that’s why I’ll do all of it myself if I have to,” Steve tells her. “So you can be Ellie. You don’t have to go in the rainbow room, okay?”
“Okay,” she nods, wiggling around until she can bury her face in his neck and whisper, “I trust you.”
He blinks quickly. “I’m glad,” he whispers back.
“Ellie,” Wayne says, voice not much steadier than Steve’s. She shifts to look at him from where she’s tucked into Steve. “We all want you t’be just Ellie if you want it. We’re all gonna be right there with you.”
“Thank you,” she says quietly. “Steve?”
“Yeah?”
“I won’t be strong enough. If I see Papa.”
“That won’t be a problem,” Hopper says, checking his gun. She shifts to look at him. “He’s not going to hurt you again.”
She frowns and buries her face back in Steve’s neck. “I’m happy,” she murmurs. “But I’m also very sad.”
Steve sighs and hugs her tightly. “I know how you feel.”
“I don’t like feeling this way.”
“I know, El. I don’t think there’s really any way to get rid of the feeling, though.”
“Just life,” Alli says quietly, scooting closer and laying a comforting hand on El’s upper arm. “I know it’s a cliché, but it’s true.”
El looks up at Alli. “Okay. What’s a cliché?”
Alli meets Steve’s eyes, a smile starting to spread, and Steve thinks everything’s going to be okay.

Update: I continue to work on all things! Nothing is abandoned! New chapters will come!
The actual, fun and exciting update: I'm going to start recommending a few AMAZING TLOU fics that you might have missed on my blog every Saturday for the next while.
I hope you find some new great reads to keep you going while we wait for season 2 - our fandom is seriously so freaking talented, and there are SO many incredibly written fics out there that I want to yell about a bunch of them! Please reblog!
These fics will vary re: how closely they stick to canon and what themes they explore, but you can expect them all to be wonderfully written and, obviously, heavily feature Joel Miller.
Some of these, including this weeks, may include mature content - make sure to read and heed the trigger warnings listed on ao3!
I have never really been interested in fan fiction with OCs, so I missed out on this week's recommendation for a long time and I bet a lot of you did too. It's both a wonderfully told Joel love story and a fic that, in my opinion, really honours the world and characters of TLOU.
Go Your Own Way by @chronicallyonlinewriter 232,575 words || 31 chapters rating: mature [see ao3 tags for full content warnings] featuring: post season/game 1 life in Jackson, angst, fluff, action, romance, smut, plenty of protective Joel and parent Joel
You can check out a review from @march-flowerr below, describing some of what makes this story so special: (vague general spoilers re: themes and mature content)
“Go Your Own Way stands, in my mind, as one of the most well written piece of fiction on Archive of Our Own. Nandorluna has such an intimate and authentic take on the existing characters that we know and love (on Joel and Ellie and all the Jackson gang) but it’s her ability to create stunning, well fleshed out original characters that drew me to her story initially. Her main character, Benny, moves across the story in such a visceral and realistic way; her arc spans not just the present canon timeline, but transports us through an entire lifetime: from childhood to outbreak, to first love, to first loss, to heartbreak and grief and then finally, to her heart’s final resting place: Joel Miller.
Zee manages to write about and embrace such difficult topics as assault, pregnancy loss, and grief without ever once making a show of it. She handles each moment with quiet dignity and intense self reflection; she draws beauty from the hollow depth of heart ache and despair without ever once losing the thread of hope that The Last of Us is known for.
At the heart of Go Your Own Way is the love story of Joel and Benny. Zee manages to create a compelling story about brokenness and connection and the raw, rare glory that is finding someone with whom you can begin to fit yourself together with again. It’s a story of family - of people who when left to wander, find their hearts drawn to each other. It’s a story about love - each relationship, from Benny and Alexei’s long friendship, to Ellie and Joel’s turbulent first years, to Benny and Joel’s steadfast devotion for each other, caters to the soul. It’s a story that I’ve found myself returning to, again and again, in all moods and places in life. If I could change anything about it, it would only be that it did have to end after all."
If you read and love this, please please show the author some love and leave a kudos and comment!! Happy fandoming y'all.

My throat croaks out a couple of notes as I hum along to the song in my ears on Wednesday. The calming smell of lemons wafts through the room reminding me of my mother. She always used to bake lemon cookies and cakes. Now the smell of sugary citrus envelopes me like a hug.
I take a break, reaching for my water bottle when I feel a tap on my shoulder. Abandoning my attempts to take a sip, I take out my earbuds.
When I turn around I see Chloe standing behind me, looking past my body at what I’m making. “I'm not trying to be rude but are we rebranding or something? Everything's lemon-flavored,” she points out with her thumb towards the front of the store.
Perspiration instantly begins collecting on top of my skin. “Oh, shit. No, I’m sorry,” I apologize, wiping my hands on my apron. “I don't know why I did that,” I murmur and my eyes drift behind her.
I’ve been in an odd daze all week, unable to focus and even Joel has noticed. I’m pretty sure he told Ellie to take it easy on me this week since she hasn’t been around much. Then again, she has been hanging at the Austin a lot more since the whole Thanksgiving fiasco. I can’t put my finger on it, but he promised he was going to take off and help support me all day today. I wonder if he likes lemon cakes.
Chloe waves her hand in front of my face, snapping me out of my thoughts. Her brows knit and concern washes over her face. “Are you okay?” she questions.
I nod, stepping past her to wrap up in the kitchen. “Yeah. I don't know what's up with me today. I just feel weird,” I remain vulnerable with her.
Chloe approaches the island I’m standing at, putting her hands on the table and leaning forward. “Ginny, love,” she looks at me as though I should already know what’s going on.
I pick up a sanitization rag and wring it out to begin cleaning the tabletop. “What?” I snip. I hate suspense.
She bites the inside of her cheek, hollowing out her mouth. An awkward silence fills the room and I curse myself for sending the others home so early. “You usually don't work today,” she points out.
I work every day, that’s the perks of owning your own bakery. “What are you talking about? it's just Friday,” I point out when the double doors to the kitchen smack open, letting in a cold gust of air.
Leo stomps in with his arms crossed, wearing black shoes and a matching tie wrapped around his neck. “Why are you working?” he chastizes, as he gets closer.
My once slow movements of cleaning pick up in frustration. I begin furiously scrubbing a stain in the metal that will realistically be there forever. “Why do people keep asking me that?” I groan.
My eyes return to focus on the stain. The fucking stain has to come out. Right now, right now, right now. “Imogen,” Leo sighs kindly. He puts his hands on my waist, pulling me backward from the procrastination. “Let’s go chat, hmm?”
I sigh, passing the cleaning products to Chloe and following Leo into the front of the bakery. He heads straight for my favorite booth, secluded in the back of the bakery towards the widows.
“You're scaring me,” I divulge, sliding into the Tiffany blue pleather seat.
Leo’s eyebrow raises before he seemingly realizes his facial expressions, reeling it back in. Men. “Relax. Have you talked to Joel today?” he questions.
“Yeah, this morning. He said to call him if I needed anything today.”
Leo leans forward across the acrylic table. “Ginny, it's December 18th,” he rasps and his words hit me like a truck.
December 18th. The day that my parents were crushed between two trucks on Interstate 290. It was unexpected and their business ties to Europe left me suddenly alone and having to clean up their shit for myself.
It took months to secure an end to it all. Although I wasn’t as close with my dad as I was with my mom, I still miss him just as much.
They say after traumatic events there’s an increase in marriages, divorces, and disappearances. As soon as I got the call, I quit and became fully invested in doing only the shit I wanted to. One of which included opening my bakery. I divorced nursing, disappeared further from the north side, and married baking.
You knew. Of course, you knew. That’s why you’ve been feeling weird all day. My head innately tilts as I stare off into space.
My spiral of cataloging my every movement to assign guilt to them begins. I should’ve known and now half the day is gone without me honoring my parents. “I’m calling Joel,” Leo’s crip voice snaps me out of my thoughts.
My head begins to shake. I don’t want to worry him for no reason. I just need to take some time away from the bakery, that is all. “No. It's not that big of a deal. I don't want to bother him,” I plead with Leo to spare the poor single father.
Leo ignores it and pulls out his phone, unlocking the device with the face sensor. “You're not bothering. Poor guy is probably just giving you space and waiting by the phone,” he explains.
Leo’s fingers tap on the tempered glass before he puts the device on the table. I look down, seeing it’s already on speaker and the ringing fills my ears.
Joel answers after two trills, per usual. “Hey. Ginny need me?” he suggests, voice dripping with honey.
I open my mouth to decline but before I do, Leo speaks up, “Yes.” If I weren’t so short I’d reach over the table and smack his head. So instead, I scold him, “Leo!” Why the fuck would he speak for me?
“My bad, Joel. She didn’t know we spoke before I came in. Yes, she does need you. I have a meeting at 1 and I need you to come by. Maybe cook her something,” he requests and the corners of my mouth quirk up in a smile. Despite what I said on the first day of our meeting, I love everything that Joel specifically cooks.
Leo pauses and her eyes look me up and down judgingly. “She doesn’t look like she’s eaten today,” he adds and I scowl at them both.
This time, I’ve had enough of Leo’s bullshit and I kick him beneath the table. He lets out a groan, shooting daggers in my direction with his eyes. But, skipping breakfast due to anxiety isn’t a cause for concern.
Joel doesn’t skip a beat, immediately answering, “Be there in 10.”
“Thanks, man,” Leo exhales, probably glad to be relieved of his suicide watch duties for the day. Maddie and Leo stayed with me during the emotional rollercoaster of this day last year, and although they’re my best friends, I don’t expect Leo to want more. Especially when I have a partner now.
He clicks the red circle on the screen and I practically collapse on the table between us. “God, Leo. I'm going to kill you,” I groan into the hard material.
“He's your boyfriend. He's supposed to be the one comforting you and not me, right?” he questions and I can’t say I disagree.
“You’re right,” I complain one last time before lifting my head and fixing the mess of curls around my head. “Okay, you can go. I’m just going to change my clothes.”
“Are you sure? I can cancel this meeting,” he placates. No, he shouldn’t. And that’s okay. I don’t want his life to stop just because mine is currently.
I try my hardest to plaster on a fake smile, but it causes me mental anguish. “Positive. I’m going to get comfy so Joel can snuggle the shit out of me,” I tell him my plans.
He grimaces, probably from my gushy words. His dark brown eyes search my face for any sign of discomfort. Once he’s satisfied, he nods. “Alright, I’ll call later. I’d stop by but you’ll be getting fucked as a distraction,” he smirks, before standing from the table and darting out of the bakery.
My jaw drops in shock. I most certainly won't be screwing my boyfriend on the anniversary of my parent's death. But maybe tomorrow, like early tomorrow. As soon as the clock hits midnight.
How can I even be horny at a time like this? There’s gotta be some unnatural demon inside of me. I drag my hands down my face, trying to pull myself back into reality before standing from the booth. Walking over to the counter, I lean over to talk to Chloe. There are still patrons in the bakery and I don’t need them hearing about my personal life. “I’m going to retire upstairs. Let me know if you need anything. Joel should be here soon and you can send him up,” I list, quietly.
Chloe nods before taking my hands in hers. “Don’t worry, I got it. This is why I’m your manager,” she eases my anxiety.
I nod, bidding her goodbye before walking towards the back of the bakery. Tears start to collect in my eyes again and I repeat my favorite mantra. No crying in public, Ginny. You just have to get upstairs then you can let it out.
But it doesn’t work.
By the time I’m climbing up the staircase, the tears are already streaming down my face causing an uncomfortable burn on my cheeks. When I reach the top, I slide the barn door open to my living quarters at an alarming rate.
The wood smacks into the door frame and I rush into the space, careful not to let the mewling kittens out behind me. I softly shut the door, watching out for their tails with strained vision.
Okay, you’re alone Ginny. Let it out.
I don’t know what I expected to happen. I couldn’t foresee myself ever falling to my knees and sobbing on the living room floor, but that’s exactly what occurs. My chest becomes tight as I choke on my own spit, babbling niceties about my mother and father.
I don’t know how long I’m crouched on the floor when I hear my living room door slide open. My knees feel sore from the hardened floor beneath me but my tears don’t stop, creating a wet stain on my grey top. “Damn, sugar,” I hear Joel say before he slides the door shut behind him.
I look up to find him rushing towards me, joining me on the floor. His typically messy hair looks freshly washed and I can tell he's used the start of the day to tame it’s unruliness. His green flannel shirt is opened nice and low, hugging his biceps deliciously. “Deep breaths. Know it’s hard but you can do it,” he encourages, rubbing warm circles onto my back.
His words barely register and as I try to get my breathing under control, hiccuping in between breaths. With each uneven breath, I attempt to keep a hold on my digestive system and not let out a sad fart. Or worse, vomit in his lap.
“After Sarah died, I had panic attacks too. Still get ‘em sometimes,” he divulges.
His hands trail up my spine to the back of my neck. His thumb traces soothing designs into my skin, effectively grounding me. My rocketing heartbeat slowly starts to steady and I allow myself to close my eyes knowing that Joel is here to catch me if I fall. His arms envelop me from behind, pulling my body so I’m sitting in his lap.
He softly caresses my hair and I tune him out as he begins whispering affirmations in my ear. I stare off into space and I jerk slightly in his hold when Joel presses a soft kiss to my neck.
I know where I am, but the last 30 minutes feel like a blur. Disassociation is a bitch.
When I finally feel aware again, Joel is still murmuring into my neck, but this time he’s talking about our future. “We’ll always be here. Me 'n Ellie through whatever,” he promises, pausing to take a breath.
I nod to let him know that I’m actually back this time. He rubs my back and I hear a soft meow coming from the floor. Toph is looking up at me with her green eyes, seemingly afraid. “We’ll have to get a bigger place for the 5 of us,” Joel adds, and I chuckle, scooping the orange kitten into my arms.
“Thank you for coming and just,” I start before gesturing to his body with one hand. “Being you,” I finish before a hiccup roars through my chest.
Joel positions himself more comfortable on the floor so he’s sitting in front of me. “I mean it. Every word,” he emphasizes, pressing a quick kiss to my wet cheeks. I smile at him, grateful for his presence.
Toph paws at my chest, snuggling into my body. Like always, Katara becomes jealous of her sister's attention, and she comes slinking behind the couch up to Joel. She struts up his leg, plopping down in the middle of his lap and shutting her eyes.
“They’re fuckin’ somethin’ else,” Joel sneers, stroking Katar’s grey fur. I snicker in agreeance, setting Toph down in the sunlight on the floor in demonstration. Joel accepts the permission to remove my cat from his personal space, following suit carefully.
I glance at Joel’s face, admiring the constellation of freckles beneath a layer of dark circles. His hair is pushed back neatly with pomade and god, he looks edible. My heart quickens when I realize, I probably look a mess with makeup running down my face.
He catches me staring and he licks his lips before asking, “What do you want for lunch?”
My brain mentally catalogs all the groceries Joe’s bought and stocked in my fridge. He figured if he’s going to make every meal, he might as well have what he needs. He insists he’s content with us staying in our respective lanes. After all, he’s just as excited for the dessert surprise at the end of the meal as Ellie is.
Figuring I can’t be picky since I’m not cooking, I decide to let him choose. “Whatever you want. I’m going to go clean myself up and get changed,” I inform him, frowning at my appearance.
Joel seemingly notices my self-judgment and sits up, pulling my face closer with my hands. “I think you’re gorgeous, sugar,” he compliments before pressing a chaste kiss on my forehead.
My skin tingles from the warmth and I can't help but smile into the sign of affection. However, my insecurity doesn't drown, grabbing my hair and pulling me back from the gorgeous man I call mine. “You’re a liar, but it’s fine,” I murmur, using his shoulders to stabilize myself as I stand.
His strong arms wrap around my body holding me close. “I wudn’t lie to you,” he promises, and I nearly become weak in the knees from that accent.
I hum in reply, deciding it’s my turn to steal a kiss from him. I haven't tasted him in a couple days when I visited him and Ellie, and I’m starting to feel like I'm forgetting a piece of him. My body lowers until we’re at eye level, and the air between us zaps.
He never fails to make me feel this way. Thunder rumbles in my stomach and lightning strikes low in my abdomen. It’s confusing, but I welcome every second of it.
Joel becomes impatient with my hovering and he brushes our lips together. The kiss is sweet and I smile into it before parting my lips. He swirls his tongue around mine while cradling my body into his.
We continue for a few moments before I need to come up for air, and I disconnect immediately looking down at his reddened lips. I press one final peck to them before getting up, for real this time.
Joel pats me on the behind as I walk out of the room before he stands himself with a grunt. Toph trails behind me into my bathroom, brushing up against my leg with a purr as I look in the mirror.
My reflection makes me want to start crying again. My throat fills with ache as I try to stuff the oncoming tears out. Sometimes I feel like I’m the only unattractive person I know.
I push the thought out of my head and for my headband, securing my hair away from my face. After pumping face wash into my hand, I hum while massaging my face. The sticky layer of tear stains rinse down the drain and I feel a sense of relief.
Once my face is clean, I reach for my towel to dry it off when I feel something particularly fuzzy. I open my right eye, peering at the counter to see Toph's tail underneath my hand. “Fuck off, cat. No counters,” I scold my shadow, lifting and setting her on the floor with wet hands.
She wines as her paws hit the floor, and I grab a clean towel from the drawer. Why did I get two cats?
After patting my face dry and discarding the towels in the hamper, I walk out towards the kitchen. As I tip-toe down the hall, I can hear Joel shuffling about. When I round the corner, I lean against the wall with my arms crossed. It’s nice to admire him in moments like this, although he’s bound to look up towards my bathroom any minute.
As if the universe hit the play button on my vision, his eyes snap to mine. “Come,” he waves me over with a welcoming grin.
I stroll over behind him before I snake my arms around his waist. My front presses into his back and I catalog every flex of muscle in his body. His arm begins sliding with precision, perfectly cutting the potato in front of him into thin slices. “Fries?” I question out of curiosity.
“And a burger your way,” he glances over his shoulder at me before returning to his chopping.
I press myself up on my tiptoes, placing a kiss on his shoulder blade. This man is perfect for me in every way. Caring for me, cooking for me, and giving me countless orgasms. My relationship with Ellie is just the cherry on top. Even if Joel and I ended things, I’d still want to be in her life.
The realization hits me like a truck and without thinking I stammer, “God, I lo–” before cutting myself out.
My body chills to ice and the oxygen is sucked from my lungs in an instant. Joel pauses his movements and stands frozen in place. I take a step back from him, turning away from him.
I need to do something to distract him from the fact that I almost just said I love you.
I reach for the kettle to set some water on for tea, fumbling about with the top of the lid. “What’d’ya say, sugar?” Joel asks from behind me.
I shake my head, feeling the hole he’s staring in my head. If I confess right now, he might leave me like everyone does. He’ll call me a crazy person and forbid me to see Ellie.
Joel’s warm hand covers mine and I jerk, before peering down. I blink rapidly at the water spilling over the top of the filled pot. “Fuck,” I swear, turning off the water and dumping a bit out of the metal container.
I shake my hand dry before my eyes meet Joel. “You sure you okay?” Joel questions with furrowed brows.
I nod, putting the lid back on the kettle. It’s a mistake, him seeing me like this. All overwhelmed and in disarray. I obviously can’t even string together a cohesive thought.
My hands fiddle around with the stove, pressing buttons until the electric burners turn red. I set the kettle down on top, turning back to face Joel.
My face turns scarlet when I see he hasn’t moved. He has instead settled into a position with one hand resting on top of the counter and the other on his hip. “I won’t call you a liar. But whatever it is, ’m here when you’re ready,” he offers lowly.
And as if nothing happens, he moves back to preparing the potatoes. I finally exhale the breath I didn’t know I was holding. Thank god he’s not hell-bent on embarrassing me today.
Deciding to take the glorious out he’s presented me, I slide into the bar seat across from him, ready to watch my favorite pass time: Chef Joel Miller cooking in my kitchen. His brows furrow and his tongue sticks out of the side of his mouth when he’s intensely focused.
A lightbulb goes off in my head and I realize, I haven’t checked up on his Michelin Star journey. “Have 3 stars to your name yet?” I ask as he turns to fill a pot with water.
“Not quite. Heard rumors we’ve already got 2 visits though,” he explains and his voice bounces off the large window in front of him.
I nod and the corners of my mouth turn up. All I want is for those around me to succeed and he’s one step closer to his goal. “That’s great, that’s only one more left. It can’t be long now,” I chirp.
Joel leans on his left leg impatiently and I focus on his back. He inhales a long deep breath and I can tell he’s not as confident. “Yeah,” he grunts.
I brush a stray curl out of my face before observing, “You don’t sound so sure.”
He sighs before turning off the water. “I am. Thought about what you said that day and ’m worried my employee's customer service is being affected by my words, Gin.”
Fuck, he’s never called me Gin before. What I said must’ve been weighing on him. Shit, shit. Code red, Ginny. “Joel, it's fine. You’ve made the changes and the reviewers will see that,” I blabber out.
Joel carries the pot over to the stove. “I know, ’m just stressed and all,” he says while fiddling with the same buttons I was moments ago.
My body begins involuntary twisting and turning in the bar stool. Joel takes notice of the fact that I've used the tea water as a diversion, switching off the kettle as he goes. I snort and shake my head at how well he knows me.
“Wait until you actually get the stars,” I emphasize the horror of his future.
Joel picks out a pink towel from the drawer beneath his waist, quickly whipping his hands off. “Yeah, I’ll be busy as hell."
“And it’ll be nice to have Ellie back in the bakery more,” I add excitedly.
Joel sighs and shakes his head. “I’ll have to get her into an afterschool program of some kind,” he responds.
My brows knit on my forehead watching him begin to prep the burger patties. “Why?” I ask.
He sets a bottle of seasoning down with a thunk and I know he means business. His deep chestnut eyes connect with my hazel ones and I know I’m no longer talking to my sweet, timid, Joel. I’m interacting with Chef Miller. “Cause you shouldn’t have to be responsible for her,” he grits through his teeth.
My lips purse and I cross my arms, slightly offended that he’d suggest I can’t handle hanging out with Ellie. “I think I can manage,” I theorize.
“I’m serious, Gin,” he argues.
“So am I. Ellie is the closest thing I have to a daughter. We already–” lied to the principal and staff at her school about our relationship. “Erm, she’s already here until close. What’s a few extra hours?” I finish as smoothly as possible, but I’m not sure Joel is buying it by the look on his face.
He raises a brow and his head tilts ever so slightly. “Are you sure?” he asks and I roll my eyes. If he asks again, my answer may be different.
There’s no reason for Ellie to join an afterschool program when she’s already comfortable here. “Positive. You are my boyfriend, Miller,” I conclude, quite finished with this conversation when the aftertaste from my words hit. “Partner,” I correct myself, looking down shyly.
“I love it when you call me that” I hear him say, causing a chuckle to slip from my throat.
We sit in comfortable silence for the remainder of the time Joel spends cooking. He occasionally glances up at me while bustling around the kitchen. Every time we make eye contact, my skin sets ablaze and I have to look away.
It seems childish to look away when your partner catches you staring. But he’s so goddamn sexy, I can’t help it. If I don’t look away, my carnal desires will replace my grief, and I’m not ready for that.
I wonder if Joel ever felt extremely horny and inappropriately happy in his grief. There’s only one way to find out.
I clear my throat, rapidly blinking away the fuzz of my thoughts. “Joel,” I murmur to get his attention.
He looks up from the set of plates, giving me a half smile. “Hmm. You ready to eat, sugar?” he asks, probably assuming I’m rushing him for food.
I don’t move from my spot to not give him the wrong idea. “Yeah but uh,” I start, pausing to pick at my nail polish. “Can I ask you something?” I question softly.
Joel pops a French fry he dropped on the counter into his mouth. “Anythin',” he utters.
He slides my favorite meal over to me and I just about see stars. It takes everything I have in me to focus on the task at hand and not swallow the burger whole.
“How long did it take you to stop feeling guilty about being happy? You know, after…” I trail off, not wanting to bring up Sarah’s passing so bluntly.
His eyebrows raise and he leans back as if he was physically impacted by my words. Shock etches over his tan face and I immediately pick up a couple of french fries, awkwardly stuffing my mouth full. “Two years and Ellie was the first person I let in. Then you came along shortly after,” he confesses.
I quickly chew my food before gulping harshly. “Oh,” I murmur.
“Oh?” Joel counters with a tilt of his head.
I nod, picking up another fry. “Yeah, it’s not bad. It’s just that I don’t think I have two years,” I think out loud.
My eyes scan the counter for Joel’s signature barbeque sauce, anxious to dip try it with the crispy potatoes. “Be patient, sugar,” he scolds.
Joel seemingly notices my attention is elsewhere and suddenly, a tiny bowl of the brown condiment is set in front of me. I blush and give him a silent thank you with a half smile. “Never been too good at that,” I admit.
Picking up the burger, I examine it to see which side is the best for the first bite. “Oh I know,” I hear Joel say before our eyes connect. He tilts his head with a mischievous smirk on his face that sends fire into my cheeks.
I shake my head at him before taking a huge bite of the juicy burger. The flavors dance on my taste buds reminding me of summer barbeques. “Mmmm, this is orgasmic,” I compliment my sexy chef.
He swallows his bite before asking, “Changed the seasoning. Taste alright?”
I nod, already ready to inhale the entire meal. “Joel, I didn’t know your burgers could get better. This is amazing,” I express.
“Well, if my toughest critic says it’s good, I’ll trust it,” he jokes and I chuckle.
Delicious food, passionate sex, and god's gift to humanity. I am the luckiest woman on earth.
The door flies open sending my eyes flying open and me jerking into Joel’s stomach. He groans before smoothing my curls with his palm. “It’s just Ellie,” he informs me she’s back from school.
I sigh, cuddling further into his body now that my anxiety has eased. “Hey,” his teenage daughter grunts when she comes into view.
Ellie begrudgingly kicks her shoes off and drops her backpack to the side. If her body could talk, it would scream. “Bad day at school?” I observe.
She nods, picking up Toph who’s sitting in her spot on the couch. “Mmhm,” she grunts out just like her dad as she takes a seat.
“Well,” I start, tossing her the remote. “I’ll let you pick,” I offer her the once-in-a-lifetime chance.
She snickers, “No, you won’t.” She gives me a pointed look and asks, “What are my options?”
I purse my lips. She’s right, I’m just shitty she knows me so well. “Grey’s or SVU,” I answer.
Ellie nods, extending the remote in her hand to click through the app. Joel begins practically petting me again. “Sugar, you sure? Don’t wanna see you cryin’ no more,” Joel growls lowly as if seeing me cry and him not being able to control it pissed him off.
I can understand if he needs control over something, but today isn’t that day. “Positive,” I reassure him.
He nods, before placing his hand under my head and gently lifting it. “Sorry, sugar,” he grunts as he stands.
He turns towards the L-shaped couch with his hand on his hip, accentuating his slender waist and I practically start drooling. “What do you two want for dinner?” he questions, looking back and forth between us.
I prop my head up in my hand and look at Ellie who looks particularly glum. She’s curled into the couch, holding Toph like the animal is her lifeline. I sigh, feeling the urge to punch someone for hurting my baby creep into my veins again. “El, you can pick. I already had my favorite for lunch,” I urge her.
“Grilled cheese and tomato soup,” she requests, not even looking up at her father.
Joel clears his throat and raises his eyebrow. Ellie looks up and her eyes dart back and forth between me and Joel. I raise my eyebrow at her because she should know what he’s looking for.
It only takes Elle a few seconds when she gets it. “Please?” she adds, looking at Joel for confirmation.
He nods and walks off to the kitchen, away from earshot. I look over at Ellie whos depressed body language hasn’t changed. My hand pats the couch next to me. “Why are you so far away? We both know this is the best TV-watching spot,” I invite her over.
When she comes over, she’s usually right next to me giving me all the school gossip. But maybe it’s because Joel is here. She slides over, sinking into the cushion. “What’s up, El? You look all…” my voice trails off and I mimic her body language.
She huffs and rolls her eyes. “Dina,” she answers.
“Okay, what about Dina?” I ask. Fuck, teenagers are hard. I wish they’d just tell you the problem the easy way.
Ellie’s head snaps in my direction. “She has a crush,” she snips.
My eyebrows raise and I tilt my head. “And I’m guessing by your body language and your fucking tone, you’re not her crush,” I lightly correct her.
She looks behind me and I assume she’s checking to see if Joel is still making us food. “No,” she states and her entire body shrivels. The rejection washes over her face and I want nothing more than to hug her.
My respect for her boundaries overrides my need for comfort. “Who does she have a crush on?” I counter.
Ellie gnaws on her lip for a moment like she’s reluctant to tell me. I understand, after all, Dina is working downstairs for me right now. “Jesse,” she tells me.
I rapidly blink, stunned by the news. “Jesse, delivery boy, Jesse?”
Ellie nods and my mouth forms an ‘o’ in response. I nod, understanding the gravity of this queer love triangle. Her shoulder hunch over even more and I decide it’s time to cheer her up with some words of encouragement.
“You know when I was a teenager, I had a crush on a girl who was dating our guy friend,” I divulge some of my past. Although she doesn’t know it involves Madi and Leo, she doesn’t need to know that to get the point.
“Really?” Ellie asks dumbfounded.
I answer tight-lipped with a nod, “Mmmhm.”
“What happened?”
“I let it play out between the two of them. If it’s meant to be, it’ll be,” I tell her.
Ellie’s face scrunches and she looks weary of taking my advice. “Look, you don’t know if Dina likes you back right?”
Ellie shakes her head no. “Right, so don’t mess with the universe. If you’re meant to be, you’ll be. You never know, maybe a girl will come into the high school and shock the shit out of you,” I theorize.
Ellie rolls her eyes and scoffs, “I doubt that.”
“Keep your options open, El. Until you put a ring on someone’s finger,” I advise her. She’s a hot commodity and I’m going to tell her that every time she needs reminding.
Joel’s head comes into view as he bends down to press a kiss on top of Ellie’s head. She lets out a blech noise, shrugging as far away from him as possible.
I laugh at the interaction while Joel simply shakes his head. “Dinner’s ready,” he alerts us.
When I peer over my shoulder, I see a delicious spread laid out. As always, Joel has beautifully plated 2 servings of grilled cheese and tomato soup. “Ooh, that looks good,” Ellie compliments her dad, setting Toph down and shooting up from the couch.
She darts into the breakfast nook, diving for the sandwich first. Her head tips back and she groans with satisfaction. “Good?” I slightly shout from the couch.
She nods her head, already moving on to try the soup. Joel chuckles and extends his hand to me. He knows I typically climb over the back of the couch and ever since my foot got caught on the couch that one time, he’s insistent on helping me over.
“Thank you,” I purr lowly, leaning in to press a quick kiss on his lips.
When I lick my lips, I taste savory remnants of tomato from him tasting the soup. I blink rapidly at him stunned, feeling a similar wave of emotion as earlier. My butterflies erupt in my chest and my heart skips a beat, stumbling over the current.
Yup, that's definitely love.
I love Joel Miller and everything that comes with him. I love his deep raspy morning voice and the way his nostrils flare when he can’t quite get a recipe right. I love his southern twang and the furrow in his brows when he’s angry.
The type of love I feel for him possesses every fiber in my body and takes over my brain. It wraps around my nervous system, acting on its own. It takes away all control I have and I don’t mind at all.
I adore Ellie and consider her to be one of my daughters. We’ve become so close these past few months and I can’t imagine a day without them in my routine. They’re the only two people I can stand around me all the time.
Joel clears his throat, bringing me back to the present. Reality smacks me like a truck and I blush. “You alright there, sugar?” Joel questions, voice laced with concern.
The corners of my mouth curve into a smile. “Yeah, I genuinely don’t know what just happened. I look at you and my mind goes blank. I think I'm going nuts,” I chuckle, slightly lying.
When I look at him, my eyes turn into hearts and pop out of my head with my tongue rolled out like the red carpet. When our eyes connect, he makes me feel like I’m the only person he’s ever been interested in romantically. Which can’t be possible considering Sarah came from somewhere.
We join Ellie and the kittens playing by her feet at the breakfast nook and a comfortable silence falls over the table. My mother always said you know the food is good when it’s silent, and we’re not much for dinner conversations around here.
Joel reaches forward and pours me a glass of wine before pouring himself some. “Guess you two are staying the night?” I ask, pointing out that whenever Joel drinks with me, they usually end up crashing.
Joel raises his eyebrows as if he’s daring me to contest, taking a sip of his wine. “If that’s okay with you?” he questions, probably trying to hide the fact that he’s not going to leave me alone tonight.
I pick up my spoon, dipping it into the soup. “It is, but I was thinking I’d come to yours tonight. El has school in the morning,” I attempt to compromise.
Ellie rolls her eyes and groans, “That sucks, my bed here is more comfortable.”
Joel begins prepping to eat and I’ve never seen someone be so meticulous about such a thing. He lays a cloth napkin into his nap and I raise my eyebrow, wondering what hell of a closet he dug those out of.
“It’s not your bed, Ellie. We don’t live here,” Joel corrects her and I shovel the soup in my mouth. It’s the perfect amount of savory and sweet.
Joel picks up the sandwich and takes a bite, nodding at the taste. While his mouth is full, I decide to insert a suggestion, “No, but El, next time you’re here, you should bring some clothes just in case. That way you don’t have to wear my clothes whenever you want to stay over.”
Ellie responds without skipping a beat, “Sounds good.”
I turn my attention back to my meal and my mind mentally drifts off. Christmas is soon so maybe I can tell him then. I don’t want to trauma bond with him right now and Christmas is a happy time. “I cleared a drawer out for you already,” Joel announces and I nearly choke on my sandwich.
“You what?” I blurt, my mind swirling with information.
In my peripheral, I see Ellie’s head going back and forth between me and Joel. “That too much? I’ll fill it back up. ‘s just some of my long sleeves,” he stammers.
“No!” I shout a bit too loudly, my body becoming hot when I realize the gravity of my tone. “I mean no, the drawer isn’t too much. I think it’d be too much if I moved in right now,” I add.
Joel nods, content with my answer, returning to his meal. “When you two move in together, can we move here?” Ellie asks, refusing to read the weight of awkwardness in the room.
Joel clears his throat and he straightens his posture a bit. Sensing his uncomfortability, I step in to talk for the both of us, “We haven’t talked about that yet, El. But when it comes to it, I’d be happy to have you here.”
“Yay!” Ellie celebrates and I take a bite of my grilled cheese. It has the perfect amount of pull and my eyes are probably sparkling with admiration for Joel at the moment.
I chew and swallow before adding, “We’ll have to move eventually though. We need a house that we’ve all picked.” I would never sign a dotted line on a new place without Ellie and Joel’s approval at this stage in our relationship. I think we’ll be together for a long time, so I want to be considerate.
Ellie perks up again, “Really?”
I nod, glancing at Joel who has completely stopped eating at this point. “Mmhm, by then you’ll be 18 and you can have this place,” I continue my conversation with Ellie, knowing he’ll holler at any time he feels I’m overstepping.
Joel’s jaw clenches as I fight a snort, assuming he’s started stewing. “The bakery?” she asks, voice laced with confusion.
I set my spoon down and give her a knowing look. “No, El. Do you like baking?” I quip.
She shrugs, dipping her sandwich into her bowl. “Eh, it’s not my calling,” she admits before taking a bite.
“Exactly. I was talking about the apartment. You can have it when we eventually move out,” I foretell, motioning between me and her father with my hand.
“Gin,” Joel pulls my attention to him. When I glance down, his hands are balled tight into a fist, one wrapped tightly around a stainless stem spoon.
If he squeezes any more, he’ll bend my cuterly. And it’s completely unnecessary. “Joel, I’m not letting your child pay $1,000 in rent when we’ll have at least one empty apartment that’s completely paid off. Try again,” I dare him to argue.
Joel sighs but his body stays wound up. “She’s gonna be spoiled.”
I whip my head in Ellie's direction. “I don’t think you’re spoiled, are you, El?”
“Not in the slightest,” Ellie says through a shit-eating grin.
My head whips back toward Joel who isn’t the slightest bit amused by our display. “See, she gets the apartment, we get a new house,” I pause waiting for his face to change. When it remains stone cold, I add my secret tactic by purring, “alone,” into his ear.
When I straighten my back, his eyes look like they’re about to pop out of his head. Anticipation flickers in his eyes and I know I’ve hooked him to the idea.
Joel’s body slowly starts to relax, but Ellie puts the cherry on top. “And everyone’s happy. Maybe Dina would move in with me. Holy shit this is gonna be awesome,” she practically bounces, and the wood beneath her creaks.
“Slow your roll, kiddo. You’ve still got 4 years,” Joel warns and I kick him lightly under the table for taking the excitement out of everything. I want her to keep a hopeful possibility of romance with Dina and he’s ruining it.
Ellie opens her mouth but I step in before the pair can start arguing. “Speaking of totally awesome, what do you want for Christmas, El?”
“I’m getting something for Christmas?” asks dumbfoundedly.
“Umm, yeah. Why wouldn’t you be?”
Ellie shrugs and a rain cloud of trauma drifts in over her head. I watch as the sorrow rain falls on top of her head and my heart drops to my ass. “I don’t know. Guess I’m just not used to it.”
I bite my lip, trying to keep it together for her. No child should have to go a December without a gift. I try my best to plaster on a fake smile to perk her up. “Well, I already have most of your gifts but I thought I’d ask you,” I tell her.
As if on command, the cloud of depressing memories is swapped for a blazing sun. “Really?” she gleans.
“Really. I love Christmas. It’s the busiest holiday for the bakery though.” I mentally curse the upcoming bustle, taking a sip of my wine.
Ellie chomps the last of her sandwich down, chewing slowly like she’s in deep thought. A sparkle comes over her eyes when it looks like she’s finally got it. “Well, some new paintbrush sets would be nice. I saw some watercolors on Instagram that are cool,” she hints.
“Send them to me,” I request.
“Okay,” she smiles, reaching into her back pocket to pull out her phone.
I smile at my hunky boyfriend, ready to point out the receipts of Ellie’s personality traits. “See, Joel. That is not a spoiled child. Madi would’ve asked for a Gucci bag and a stamp on her passport when we were younger.”
Ellie’s head perks up from her phone. “Wait, that’s an option?” she clarifies sarcastically.
“No,” Joel barks at the same time as I offer, “Ask Madi.”
Joel frowns in my direction and I quickly add, “We don’t have that type of money but Madi does and she’s always ready to spend it on someone. If you want something really expensive, she’s the one to ask.”
Joel's elbows come down on the table quite hard and he puts his head in his hands. “Gin,” he groans.
“What? Madi’s like her aunt or whatever now. She’s obligated by girl code to help her out,” I inform him, picking up my spoon. At this point, the utensil is useless. The food’s so good, I’m ready to drink the rest of the bowl down.
“Spoilin’ her ain’t helpin’,” he scolds me.
I blow the steaming liquid in front of my face. “No, but Ellie knows the value of money to know the difference between dinner at the estate versus dinner at the breakfast nook,” I say before taking a bite.
“Yeah, this sucks,” Ellie sarcastically grumbles, before picking up the soup and slurping the last bit of it.
I snicker, dipping the last of my sandwich into the soup. I never thought I could be this content after my parents passed but here I am, enjoying the anniversary of their death with my two favorite people.
I peer under the table at the sleeping cats and smile. I need to focus on the two people that I have a future with and a life with, not the two who are long gone. It’s what my mother would want for me, anyway. The girl that hooked me onto the man that I love. Fuck. I’ve got to find a better time to tell him.

Angel and Ellis
Story below if anyone is interested:
Ellis is an assassin ghost from the 1940's. He was murdered by another assassin after the man he was being paid by got nervous he'd come for him next. Unable to move on, he continues his work in being an assassin as a ghost. You can summon him with a simple incantation but for a job, you must pay with a piece of your soul.
Angel is one in a long generation of psychic mediums attempting to kill Ellis' spirit once and for all. They all have failed, some more than others. He has psychic powers that allow him to see and speak to ghosts as well as touch them on occasion. His necklace helps him focus his powers but is not the source of it.
Angel and Ellis are very aware of each other because both sides are constantly trying to kill the other. Ellis has killed Angel's ancestors, since they also tried to kill him, and Angel feels obligated to avenge them. Neither are very successful despite their previous successes.

The Music
An Ellie Williams x reader fanfiction
in which the reader is in love with her roommate includes : modern!ellie musician!ellie, composer!ellie, roommate!ellie, best friend!ellie, romantic/soft!ellie, angst, fluff, let me know if i missed anything. this is my first post so be nice
The soft, dampened sounds of Ellie’s work and thoughts being played through the small piano drifted in the air all that sunny, late-winter afternoon, wafting through the air, towards your door, and out the open window, to be replaced by a chilly breeze.
Ellie’s music was nothing new. She was constantly making something, working long term on musical projects and creations. It seemed as if she formed a bond with each one, never truly leaving them behind, while simultaneously falling in love with another of its kind.
And you listened. You grew and lived with each piece she made. Every day, the things Ellie created became more and more perfect, more and more enhanced and beautiful. You fell in love with the sounds, each of them outlining stories of experiences you shared with Ellie, the soundtracks to certain chapters yours and Ellie’s novel.
That certain day was one that was specifically tied with a song. Ellie’s current piece was unnamed as of yet, but you remembered it as one that was to be played warm and soft, while the harmonies danced around with each other in a way that created a beautiful friction— like of that between butter and toast.
You got up from your position of study to go out to get a snack, but also as an excuse to get closer to the blissful noises. As you walked out, you saw Ellie, somewhat disheveled; hair tied back but still messy, sleeves rolled up, glasses slipping down her nose. Yet, the closer your eyes got to the piano, the more peaceful the scene became: her arms moving and swaying along with the sway of the music, and closer yet, her fingers connecting with the music, in perfect harmony with the very things they were making.
As you opened the fridge, you heard the soft sounds of Ellie's playing stop, almost to your disappointment. "Hey," you heard her voice from where she sat. She sighed a small, tired sigh and asked, "How's your studying going?"
"Uh, fine, I guess. Really boring, though. What about, uh, that piece? It sounds really beautiful." Your awkward disposition only further cut off your ability to convey to Ellie how you truly felt towards her music.
"Uh, I don't know. Something isn't sitting right with me about it yet, but I can't figure out what it is." Ellie looked at you, her beautiful green eyes brewing up a request, sending a grin onto her face. She cocked her head, motioning for you to sit next to her on the small piano bench. "I think I might just need a fresh set of ears on it."
You took a spot next to Ellie, your right leg lightly toucher her left, and when Ellie was settled and ready, she began to play.
It was the same song as before, but an entirely different experience. The music seemed to be so much closer. In fact, it seemed not only to be embracing you, but even flowing into you as the vibrations of each note, soft and connected and warm. Ellie truly created a world with her music, and she had transported you into it.
By the time the piece was over, you knew you had to leave the magical world you had enjoyed so deeply, and give Ellie the advice she had asked for in the first place.
Luckily, even in your dreamy state, your mind was still able to be analytical about the music Ellie had played.
"It's the time signature," you said, pointing at the music. "You have it written in 4/4, but you're playing it in threes, so you gotta switch it to 9/8. That's why the downbeats are so fucked up."
This was when you got to see Ellies thinking process, through her facial expressions. At first she looked intently at her music with furrowed eyebrows, and then realization flashed across her face and she moved swiftly, changing the things that needed to be fixed. Once her process was over, she looked at me and smiled.
"That was exactly it," she smacked the side of your leg light-heartedly. You knew she was oblivious to the experience she had just given you. She stood up and stretched, groaning a tired groan.
You looked up at Ellie, admired at how she could produce something so beautiful so nonchalantly. "It really does sound beautiful," you said, standing up and gazing into Ellie's eyes. She met yours as well, matching you in meaning and intent. "How do you do it?" You ask.
She giggled and plopped onto the couch. "What are you talking about," she said with a grin and skeptical gaze.
"You know what you do." You try your best to shield your thoughts from how in love with her, and everything she did, you were.
"If you're talking about my music, uh.... I don't even know. It's a gift that I'm glad to have, though. It's like I just sit down with an idea-- like sometimes I look at a picture, or just sit by the piano after a nature walk-- and my thoughts just flow out through the music."
The two of you just sat for a moment until a question popped in your head. "What inspired this piece?"
A very light shade of pink flashed on Ellies face, but she brought out her phone and opened the photos app. She pulled up a picture of a sunset shining through a window, silhouetting a girl who looked down at the work in front of her. And that girl was- you...
You looked into her eyes and she only smiled back, looking just as deeply into yours, your faces hardly inches apart. The only way to interpret how you felt in that moment seemed through the music Ellie had played not too long ago.

CHAPTER TWO: NEWBIE
June 15, 2016, 4:00 am
In the depths of the night, Luke Castellan lay beside his little sister, staring outside into the darkened velvet sky. Hours had passed since he and Annabeth stepped inside the camp’s borders, but the memory of what had just happened was still fresh, flashing in his mind again and again, haunting him.
June 14th, 8:30 pm
“Luke, I’m tired,” Annabeth whined, tugging on the hem of his shirt. They had been walking for hours, unable to find a place to stay for the night without monsters finding them.
Luke sighed. Despite being tired as well, he knew stopping wouldn’t do them any good. “We’ll stop soon, I promise,” he managed to say, giving the girl a small smile. “Just hold on, okay?”
“But I’m so tired,” Annabeth whined once more. “My feet hurt from all the walking!”
Thalia stopped in her tracks, hearing the younger girl. “I’m sorry, Annie, but we have to get going or those bad monsters will catch up on us.”
Annabeth looked up at the older girl, electric blue, meeting hers. “But, I’m so tired….”
“I know, we all are, kid. But stopping won’t do us any good, the monsters we faced just hours ago? They’ll find us, and we’ll be too weak to fight. Grover said we’re almost there, so we need to get going,” Thalia explained, hoping to convince the little girl to tread just a little further.
“Thalia’s right, Annabeth,” Luke said, backing up the raven-haired girl. “Come on, you can ride on my shoulders, so you can rest for a bit.”
Annabeth stared at the ground, and eventually, after a few seconds, she nodded. “Okay.”
Thalia patted her on the shoulder before ruffling in the back pack she had in her arms. “Here you go,” she said, passing Annabeth the last granola bar. “Eat up; you’ll need it, kid.”
Luke smiled at the sight of Annabeth taking the granola bar from Thalia, relieved that she wouldn’t be whining again anytime soon and they could resume their journey.
“Come on,” Luke chuckled, taking a look up at the dark sky. “I think it's gonna rain soon, we better get a move on. We don't want the flying witches to catch up on us with their ugly dogs.” Despite being so drained and worn out, he picked up Annabeth and placed her up on his shoulders, continuing their journey towards Camp Half Blood.
If Luke had anything he was thankful for, it was the fact that he found family regardless of the circumstances.
“No, no, no!” Annabeth screamed, snapping Luke out of his trance. “Monsters!”
Luke whips his head around almost immediately, reaching for the little girl and wrapping his arm around her, pulling the screaming child close to his chest. “Shh, Annie, it’s okay,” Luke whispered, hoping to soothe the younger girl. “I’m,” he said, taking a deep breath. “...here.”
Annabeth buried her face in her older brother’s chest, sobbing. “Thalia…” she murmured, tears absorbing into Luke’s tattered shirt.
“It’s okay, shh,” Luke whispered, rubbing circles on her back in an attempt to calm her down. “There aren’t any monsters anymore; we’re safe, you’re safe….”
Luke choked back his tears as he comforted his sister back to sleep. He was hurting too; he had lost Thalia too.
June 14th, 11:55 pm
“Don’t, don’t be stupid, Thalia!”
“No time! Run!” Thalia screamed, hoping to buy Luke and Annabeth some time to get to camp unharmed. “Don’t stop until you’re inside the border!”
“But-”
“Luke, think of Annabeth! Go!”
Luke placed Annabeth on his hip, turning to run despite his sprained ankle from running from some cyclopes brothers and his desperation to stay with Thalia to help fight off the monsters attacking them.
“Run!” Thalia screamed once more, her voice cracking as she pushed Luke forward. “Run!”
Luke stumbled forward, wincing from the pain of Annabeth's form weighing down on his broken ankle as monsters roared, ringing in his ears. Luke tried his best to run, not daring to look back as he already knew what was going to happen.
Annabeth cried, clinging to Luke tighter. “No more, no more!”
“I-It’s okay..it’s okay, don’t worry, we’ll be safe soon,” Luke whispered, fighting back his tears as he limped badly towards the camp's borders with Grover running closely behind.
As soon as Luke crossed through the barriers with Annabeth, he finally dared himself to look back. Thalia was fighting off as much as she could, when one of the cyclopes grabbed her by her jacket and threw her hard against the ground with a loud thud.
“No!” Luke screamed, ready to run to Thalia's aid, but Grover stopped him.
Luke felt helpless as he stared at Thalia laying on the ground, gasping for air, slowly dying. Before Luke could react, there was a loud boom of thunder, scattering the monsters away from her limp body.
And right before Luke’s eyes, Thalia’s form slowly turned into a large pine tree, the barrier enveloping it as the rain continuously poured down from the darkened sky, thunder and lightning rumbling in the distance.
“No...no...no....Thalia!” Luke tried to scream, but nothing came out. He just stood there, helpless as he held Annabeth tighter as she sobbed on his shoulder.
“We have to get to the Infirmary,” Grover quietly interrupted, tears in his eyes as he placed a hand on Luke's arm. “Your ankle, Annabeth too.”
“Thalia...she...she's...she's gone.” Luke bitterly choked back his tears, glaring into the darkness where the monsters stood just a minute ago.
“There's nothing we can do anymore,” Grover sniffled, feeling guilty for Thalia's demise, failing as a protector. Grover let out a shaky sigh, before reaching to tap Annabeth on her shoulder. “It's okay now, Annabeth, you're safe.”
Luke took a deep breath, rubbing circles on Annabeth's back as she continued to sob on his shoulder, her eyes glued shut despite Grover's assurances. “We're okay, Annie, we're okay.” he tried to sound strong for his little sister, despite the pain, sadness, and anger he was feeling from the loss of Thalia. “Let's get you settled in, okay? Grover, lead the way man.”
Luke took one last look at Thalia's pine tree, before following Grover to the Big House.
“I'm so sorry, Thalia,” Luke thought, anger coursing through his veins. This wasn't supposed to happen. Thalia, she deserved to live more than anyone else. She was his best friend, his sister, Thalia was family along with Annabeth.
“We....” Luke choked out a sob, kissing Annabeth's forehead. “We'll be okay. No one's gonna hurt us ever again.”
“We’ll be alright,” Luke breathed out shakily to Annabeth’s now-sleeping form, tears pricking the corners of his eyes. “I won’t let anyone or anything hurt you ever again.”
Maya Williams has lived a relatively normal life as a demigod.
She was eight when she arrived at Camp Half Blood. Maya had run away when she was six years old, a scared little girl who didn’t have a clue why her mother abandoned her as a baby or why her father hated her so badly. She had been on her own for almost two years, fighting her hardest to survive in a world not fit for a child, let alone a child of the goddess of love and beauty.
Unlike other demigods, Maya was technically safe from monsters. Her scent was significantly sweeter than that of the average child of the gods, making her—or any other child of Aphrodite, really—safe from monsters. Still, Maya wasn’t safe from the monsters of the mortal world.
Children of Aphrodite radiate beauty, some more than others. Some would think it’s a blessing, but for the children of the goddess of beauty—at least for Maya—it’s a curse more than it is a blessing. While on the run, Maya had not-so-good encounters with older men—or, as she called them, monsters.
Maya tried to avoid men as much as she could, mostly hiding behind large garbage cans or running as fast as her little legs could carry her. One time, she resorted to biting and kicking, which ended up leaving her with a large scar down her arm because the man clawed at her in an effort to pry her teeth off of his arm.
And then Ferdinand came into the picture.
At first, Maya was skeptical.
Ferdinand had the legs and horns of a goat, and that isn’t something she’s seen in her life before. And then he told her there was a safe haven for children like her. A place where she’d never get hurt again. She’d have someone—her half siblings—to guide her in the world she had no clue how to live in.
It was a splash of color in Maya’s young life, solace in a world full of terrors. She finally had a place where she belonged.
Now, Maya is four months away from turning fourteen years old. The eldest out of ten kids that reside in cabin ten, which she was made head of when the former head went off to college when she was twelve years old.
Throughout the years, Maya has learned to be the perfect child of Aphrodite. The scared little girl who arrived at camp six years ago was long gone and replaced by a beautiful, smart, strong, and independent young woman who is the epitome of perfection by camp half blood’s standards.
At nine years old, Maya understood that beauty was a weapon—for the children of Aphrodite, at least. Children of the goddess of love are most known in camp for breaking hearts, as a rite of passage for a child of the goddess to prove themselves to their mother, like how her sisters and brothers had done before Maya had even arrived in the camp built for the children of the gods.
“Yeah, sorry, this isn’t working out,” Maya sighed dramatically, placing her French-tipped manicured hand delicately against her latest conquests' cheek.
The son of Apollo smiled, the look in his eyes saying otherwise. He’d been in a relationship with Maya for less than a week, and she’s already breaking up with him. He should have expected it. After all, Maya had a reputation for the last two years—breaking hearts like it’s nobody’s business. It didn’t help that she had charm speak, easily luring boys into her game.
“Can…can we still be friends, Maya?” He looked up, meeting her kaleidoscope eyes.
“Hun, I think it’s better if we don’t.” Maya looked at him with a faux apologetic look in her eyes. “It’s for the better.”
The boy sighed, giving Maya one last smile before turning away—another heart broken by the vixen of cabin ten.
“Maya, that’s the sixth one this month.” Nine, almost ten-year-old Silena sighed, watching another Apollo kid walk away, devastated after trying his luck with her sister and failing. “Poor guy.”
“Not my fault he wanted me,” Maya rolled her eyes, crossing her arms over her chest as she started to walk in the direction of the Big House. “I really don’t know why it’s such a big deal.”
“He’s what? Guy number fifty? Sixty? I lost count,” Silena muttered, counting on her fingers.
There were the sons of Ares—who claimed that Maya should be theirs as her mother was their father’s partner—who would woo her with their fighting skills. There were a few sons of Demeter who’d give her an assortment of flowers—from roses to sunflowers, to tulips. A lot of sons of Apollo—just like the one Maya recently dumped—tried wooing her with haikus, poems, and musical numbers—a trick their father Apollo did to win over people he liked, which never worked on her because, in her opinion, they were annoying. A few of Hephaestus’ sons would give her contraptions, like that magical hair dryer that could dry her hair in five seconds or that vanity table she had in the Aphrodite cabin, which had a lot of drawers and lights easily changed by a click of a button. And finally, some of Athena’s sons—which was funny considering they were supposed to be the logical ones yet they fell for Maya’s charm. It was honestly quite terrifying how her sister could smile and boys would just fall at her feet, like idiots, despite knowing what their fate would be.
“Sixty-five, Silena, keep up.” Maya chuckled, turning to face her sister and reaching to flick her long hair back.
“You are hopeless,” Silena said, shaking her head. “You’ve proved yourself to Mom two years ago, and you’re still at the game.”
“You have to understand that it isn’t my fault, little sister,” Maya said, eyeing a son of Ares who was sparring with his siblings. “It’s mom’s blessing’s fault.”
Silena rolled her eyes at her older sister. “You keep on blaming Mom’s blessing.”
“You’re too young to understand, darlin’,” Maya cooed, patting Silena on the cheek. “I’m going to go and ask Chiron about that fashion show,” she said, turning her heel and colliding with someone else—a boy.
“What the-!” Maya almost shrieked, trying to regain her balance. Maya looked up, emerald green meeting chocolate brown.
“Sorry.” The boy apologized, his hand on Maya’s arm.
“Let go of me!” Maya snarled, yanking her arm away. “Next time, watch where you’re going, dummy!”
The boy scowled. “No need to be rude, princess.”
Maya scowled, looking him up and down. He had dark, curly hair and a mischievous look in his chocolate brown eyes that held pain and misery at the same time, paired with a cocky smile. Maya had to—begrudgingly—admit that the boy in front of her was handsome.
“Are you done staring?” The boy teased, a smirk etched on his lips. “I’m Luke, by the way; we’re new.”
“Do I look like I care?” Maya snapped, crossing her arms over her chest.
“I’m Silena!” Silena piped up from behind Maya, a wide smile on her pink lips. The boy—Luke—smiled at Silena, and Maya was sure she’d be hearing about him for the rest of the day. She gave her sister a warning look, as she didn’t need her babbling about this person.
“Luke?” A little voice asked. Maya’s eyes darted down to a little girl with striking gray eyes—a clear sign that she was an Athena kid (Maya dated a few Athena kids, so she’d know). She couldn’t be older than seven or eight—around the same age as Maya when she first arrived.
Luke smiled at the little girl, patting her on the shoulder. “Go on, Annie, introduce yourself to our new friends.”
“I’m Annabeth, daughter of Athena,” she mumbled, shuffling her feet, not daring to make eye contact with the older girls in front of her.
Maya had a soft spot for little kids, especially those who were the same age as her when she arrived at camp. She had a feeling that little Annabeth had the same childhood as her; the same pain she had was evident in her eyes.
Maya kneeled down to Annabeth’s height. “Hi Annabeth, I’m Maya. It’s an honor meeting you, little one,” she smiled, her whole attitude just minutes ago fading—much to Luke’s surprise.
“Hi,” Annabeth said, giving Maya a tight smile.
“Wow, one minute she was rude, and the next she’s a saint,” Luke muttered, earning a glare from Maya. Gods, he’s annoying.
Maya stood up, the smile still on her lips—although this time, it was fake. A talent she’s mastered for the past five years. “Welcome to camp! Like I said, I’m Maya, and I’m one of the camp counselors-”
“You’re a counselor?” Luke asked, cutting her off, his lips curled into a teasing smirk. “You’re the same age as me, aren’t you, princess?”
Maya glared at him, like it was the most natural thing that she was born to do. Who does he think he is? To talk to me like that. “As I was saying, I’m one of the camp counselors, being the head of cabin ten—the Aphrodite cabin. If you ever need anything, don’t hesitate to come to me.”
Luke flashed her a boyish grin. “Oh, I won’t.”
This guy was really pushing Maya’s buttons. Normally, someone would never speak to her unless they were from cabin ten, or she’d be the first one to initiate—which was flirting, most of the time. “All right,” Maya said through gritted teeth before turning to face her sister. “I’m going to go find Chiron. My sister here would be glad to tour you guys around camp. How does that sound?”
Annabeth’s eyes lit up. “Ooh, can we, Luke? Can we?” She pleaded, tugging on Luke’s shirt, her big gray eyes pleading with him.
Luke chuckled, patting Annabeth on the head lightly. “Alright, alright, we’ll take that tour.”
“That settles it!” Maya clapped her hands, pushing Silena forward slightly, eager to get away as soon as possible. “I’ll leave you to it, sis.”
Silena rolled her eyes at her sister. At nine years old, she already has an attitude—much like Maya’s, although tamer than hers. “Alright. But you better get Chiron on the idea, Maya! Everyone’s counting on you!”
Maya grinned, tucking a strand of her auburn hair behind her ear. “I know, I know, I’m on it.”
“On what?” Luke asked, genuinely curious about what the Aphrodite kids were planning.
“None of your business, newbie,” Maya said, a little harsher than she intended in the presence of a kid. Maya sighed. He’s getting on my nerves. “It’s for our cabin, a little event for us.”
“Can we join?” Little Annabeth asked, big gray eyes looking up at Maya. Gods. Who was Maya to deny a little girl who’s reminding her of her when she was a little girl—alone and scared, just wanting to be loved and to belong.
“Tell you what, kid,” Maya chuckled. “I’ll try to get the idea approved. And when Chiron does, you’ll be the first one to know. How does that sound?”
Annabeth smiled up at Maya. “Thank you,”
Maya clapped her hands. “Alright, I’ll leave you guys with the tour.” She cast a look at Luke, rolling her eyes at him, before turning to leave—eager to finally get away from him.
“Damn, what's got her panties in a twist?” Luke asked, his eyes glued onto the redheaded girl as she made her way towards the Big House.
Silena let out a sigh, shaking her head at the thought of explaining her sister. “She’s, well, you know…”
Luke looked at her, brow raised as h waited for an answer. “She's what?”
“She’s a good person, alright?” Silena said, starting to walk opposite of the direction her sister went.
“Doesn’t seem like it. She’s a bi- I mean, she's snappy,” Luke said, almost calling the girl he just met a bitch, the scene of her snapping at him replaying in his head as he and Annabeth followed Silena. “Is she always like that?” Normally, he wasn't an ass when it came to girls, but this girl was something. Though, to be fair, Luke's experiences with the opposite gender were only limited to Thalia and Annabeth, so he was a bit biased with his thoughts.
“Actually, she’s the opposite,” Silena stopped in her tracks, turning to face Luke with a determined look on her face. “She’s the best sister anyone could ever ask for. She always makes sure we have everything we need. But yeah, Maya has an attitude, sometimes. Anyway, this is the dining area.” She pointed to a pavilion framed by large Greek columns overlooking the sea.
Luke scanned the pavilion in awe. He’d never seen a place so sophisticated, just as a place to eat. His eyes then darted down to Annabeth, whose eyes were as big as saucers as she looked around. Silena led the two inside, pausing abruptly in the middle.
“There are twelve tables corresponding to each cabin, meaning each cabin is supposed to sit at their designated tables. Aphrodite kids at the Aphrodite table, Apollo kids at the Apollo table, Athena kids at the Athena table, and so on.” Silena gave Annabeth an apologetic smile, who was gripping Luke’s arm, not wanting to be separated.
Luke kneeled down to Annabeth’s level, his hands holding hers. “Don’t worry, Annie, you’ll be alright with your brothers and sisters there. They’ll take care of you. And besides, I think they love architecture, like you! It won’t be so bad, I promise.”
“But you’re my brother,” Annabeth mumbled, refusing to at least take a glance at her own designated cabin's table. Luke sighed, his heart aching for his adoptive little sister. They were family, but Annabeth had siblings of her own that she had to at least try to get along with.
“I know, Annie, but you can have lots of brothers and sisters too, you know? Just like me and Thalia,” Luke explained gently. “And it’s not like I’m going to forget you while you’re with them. You’re my little sister, and I’ll always be your big brother, no matter what.”
Annabeth’s lower lip trembled, still wary of being with others and the possibility of Luke leaving her. “You promise?”
Luke chuckled, ruffling her mess of wild curls. “When have I ever broken a promise? It’s me and you against the world, kid. You aren't getting rid of me anytime soon.”
Annabeth seemed to relax a bit at Luke's words, her eyes darting towards cabin six's table, where twelve other kids were chatting with one another.
Silena smiled at Annabeth, placing a hand on her shoulder. “You want me to walk you to your table?”
Annabeth shook her head, making Luke laugh at her stubbornness. “I got it, thank you.”
Luke watched as Annabeth trudged forward to the Athena table, where her siblings were waiting for her with big smiles. Annabeth, so far was the youngest. Judging from the smiles the older Athena kids gave her, Luke knew she was in good hands.
“Don’t worry ‘bout her. She’s going to be okay. You see that girl with blonde hair?” Silena pointed to the girl at the Athena table, welcoming Annabeth. “Her name's Olive, she's the head of the Athena cabin. She’s going to take care of little Annabeth.”
Luke smiled, his eyes still glued to Annabeth, who was already smiling and talking to her older siblings. “She’s gonna be alright, I know she will. She’s a fighter, you know?”
“I bet she is. Anyway, so who’s your godly parent?”
Luke turned to face her, his face turning sour for a split second at the question. “Hermes.”
“There,” Silena pointed to a table with kids with the same mischievous look as him. “Just ‘cross ours,” She said, turning to table ten, across cabin eleven’s. There were very beautiful girls and very good-looking, handsome boys laughing together.
“Wow.” Luke muttered, staring at the members of cabin ten.
Silena waved at her siblings. “Hey guys!”
The group of good-looking kids waved back, one of them beckoning Silena to come over.
“Has Maya gotten it approved yet?” One of the girls asked as Silena walked forward, Luke following behind.
“Not yet,” Silena answered, sitting beside a blonde boy around her age. “She’s getting it approved right now, I think. She just went to the Big House.”
“I hope it gets approved. I’ve been dying to show off my new Chanel dress!” A brunette girl squealed.
Silena laughed, absentmindedly forgetting Luke was standing behind her. “Oh, I almost forgot! Guys, this is Luke.”
Silena’s siblings turned to face Luke, and suddenly he felt his cheeks grow hot. Who wouldn’t when attractive girls were staring at you? Luke awkwardly waved at them. “Hi.”
The girls smiled at him, batting their eyelashes at him. “Hi, Luke!” They squealed, earning the looks of everyone else in the pavilion.
“Easy, guys, he’s new.” Silena laughed, tossing her hair over her shoulder. “Don’t overwhelm him.”
“I’m okay,” Luke smiled, causing the girls—minus Silena—to squeal. Luke was sure he had popped an eardrum at how loud a girl’s squeal could be. He was glad Thalia and Annabeth never did, or he would've gone deaf earlier in his life.
Luke turned to face the eleventh table, where he was supposed to be. Cabin eleven, the cabin of his father. Luke took a deep breath before making his way to the table.
“Hi, I’m Luke.” The son of Hermes introduced himself to the oldest kid at the table, who looked around seventeen or eighteen. “Your brother, apparently.”
The older boy smiled, rising to his feet. “Welcome, newbie,” he greeted Luke, reaching out a hand for a handshake, which Luke took. “I’m Matt, head of eleven. Come on in, take a seat.”
Luke gave the older boy a nod, taking a seat beside a dark-haired boy around Silena’s age at the other end of the table.
“Hi, I’m Chris, Chris Rodriguez!” The younger boy introduced himself. “I just got here too!”
Matt chuckled, reaching for the goblet in front of him. “Chris, he got here two weeks ago.”
“I’m turning nine soon!” Chris raised up nine fingers, wiggling them in the air, making Luke laugh slightly. Chris was very different from Annabeth; he seemed like a normal kid, unlike Annabeth, who had been forced to grow up so early in her life, fighting for her life at almost seven years old.
Judging from how cheery Chris was, Luke thinks he had a good childhood, unlike him. Perhaps, he has a stable mother? Unlike what he had.
“Have you gotten a tour yet?” Matt asks, taking a sip from the goblet with orange fizzy liquid.
Luke shook his head. “Silena’s only brought me here, so far.”
“I’ll continue that tour for you,” Matt offered. “That is, if you’d like?”
Luke shrugged his shoulders. “I’ve got nothing to do anyway.”
“Oh, there’s a lot to do around here,” Matt smiles, his eyes shining with a familiar mischief. “But of course, we have to get you settled at eleven. It’s a little bit crowded, but it’s home.”
Luke raised a brow. “Crowded?”
Matt gave him an apologetic smile. “Undetermined kids stay at our cabin. That’s why it's often crowded. But don’t worry, I think we have an extra sleeping bag to spare.”
Before Luke could utter a reply, a loud squeal—which Luke was starting to hate—echoed throughout the pavilion.
Luke whips his head around, only to see the girl who he was sure had called him stupid just earlier.
The girl—Luke thinks her name was Maya—ran forward to table ten, her hair dancing like fire in the wind. She had a huge grin plastered on her pretty face, her green eyes sparkling with excitement, making them shine like emeralds in the sun.
As soon as the girl was in earshot of her siblings, she started squealing again.
“Typical,” Matt says, rolling his eyes at the table next to them.
Luke keeps his attention on the fiery girl, absentmindedly smiling in her direction.
“Chiron approved the fashion show!” Maya happily announced, smiling from ear to ear. “He says we can start planning!”
Cheers erupted from the table, earning groans from some of the other campers. “I knew you could do it!” Silena beamed, mirroring her sister’s excitement.
Maya sat down beside Silena, pushing strands of her out of her face. “I always get what I want,” she chuckled, reaching for a strawberry from the plate in front of her and popping it in her mouth.
“Don’t get fooled by that pretty face,” Matt warned.
Luke turned his attention back to Matt, brow raised. “Why’s that?”
“That girl is heartless,” Matt simply answered.
Luke furrowed his eyebrows. “What do you mean? She looks sweet.” He said, quite the contrast to his initial thought of her.
“Sweet?” Matt snorts, rolling his eyes at table ten. “That girl is the devil.”
“Care to explain?” Luke asks, his gaze momentarily moving to the said devil.
“Aphrodite is known for breaking hearts,” Matt explained, glancing at the children of the goddess. “And it’s said that in order to prove themselves to their mother, they have to make someone fall in love with them and break that someone’s heart.”
“Break their heart?”
Matt nodded. “And that girl, Maya,” He jerked his head in her direction. “She has held the record for the most heartbreaks since she was twelve.”
“T-Twelve?” Luke choked on his own saliva. “Twelve years old?”
Everyone around the table nodded.
Luke turned to look at Maya again. She was talking to her sister when the son of Hermes noticed some boys looking at her like she was the only girl in the world.
Luke had to admit it; Maya was pretty—stunning, even. Beautiful like a rose forever in bloom, gorgeous like a summer sunset.
“I think I can handle her.”
Matt choked on his drink. “What?”
“Two can play the heartbreak game,” Luke smirked, turning to look at Maya, who coincidentally turned his way and rolled her eyes at him.
“Are you crazy?”
“Are you stupid?”
“ARE YOU OUT OF YOUR MIND!?”
Luke turned his attention back to the table, a lopsided grin on his lips. “I can do this; don’t worry.”
Matt shook his head. “Don’t say I didn’t warn you, brother.”
“How hard can it be?” Luke mused, shrugging his shoulders. “I’ve got nothing to do anyway.”
Matt groaned, shaking his head. “It’s your funeral, man.”
"C'mon, let me prove myself,” Luke smirks at his older brother, adjusting his shirt and moving a bit too confidently to the girl with an attitude as ablaze as her hair.
“She’s gonna kill him, I know it,” Chris mutters, watching as Luke makes his way to the girl in question. “Never thought we would lose someone this early like this.”
“No, no, it's okay, Chris,” Matt replies, eyes narrowing and arms now crossed. “Guess he had to see it for himself. Maybe he’ll learn his lesson.”
As Luke reached the table, he directed his eyes to the girl with flaming hair, earning all of the members of cabin ten’s attention on him, a few girls smiling at his return, others snickering anticipating his next move.
“Hey,” Luke says coolly, only now earning a side glance from the head of their cabin, a quirk in her features suggesting he continue. Oh shit, Luke thought, mildly intimidated by the girl. “Uh, why don't you show me around?” He asked, softly smiling, trying his best to feign confidence.
Maya—now annoyed—sensing his intentions, raised a brow at him. “Didn’t Silena show you around?”
Silena shook her head beside her sister. “Only got to bring him and Annabeth here, sorry. ”
Maya sighed, tilting her head to the side. “I’ll be busy,” she said, then turned her attention to another one of her sisters—the ones who have been smiling from ear to ear at the sight of Luke. “Maybe Lou can show you around?”
“Oh, but princess,” Luke drawls, a cocky smile forming on his lips. “I want you to show me what this place is all about.”
That shows her.
“Wrong move,” Matt mutters from table eleven, shaking his head, knowing what will happen next.
Maya stood up, smiling sweetly at Luke, which was never a good sign to anyone else. He was sure her eyes changed colors in a split second. “You want me to show you around?” She asked, her voice as sickeningly sweet as honey.
Luke nodded, looking a little arrogant as he leaned forward. “What do you say, princess? Are you up for the challenge?”
Maya’s expression turned changed, and before Luke could comprehend what was happening, the daughter of Aphrodite’s fist collided with his nose, causing him to stumble back as gasps filled the pavilion.
“Never ever call me princess again, yeah?” Maya smiled innocently at Luke, her green eyes shining mischief like dazzling emeralds. "Because, baby, I can hit so much harder than that. Got me?”
Luke groaned as he clutched his nose. Maya knew how to punch, he was sure that she had broken his nose at how hard her fist collided with his nose. But she didn’t seem bothered by the impact, as she didn’t even check her knuckles to see if they were bleeding like Luke’s nose was. The way she threatened him? It was enticing, as if her voice had power over him.
“Aren’t you just a little vixen?” Luke spluttered, blood still dripping from his nose.
Everyone around them started whispering. It was like Luke was in one of those movies he once watched as a child. He glanced at table eleven; Matt was groaning, Chris had his eyes closed shut, and the others were shaking their heads as they suppressed their laughter.
Luke faced Maya again, although he moved two steps back just in case. “Princess,” he lifted his head up, slowly looking up at her, still as arrogant as ever.
“You’ve got three seconds to run before I-” Before Luke could finish hearing Maya speak, someone pulled him from behind, dragging him away.
“Are you insane?” Matt hissed, pushing Luke to sit down. “We told you not to mess with her! Look what it got you!”
“What? I made progress,” Luke grinned, wiping off the blood oozing out of his currently broken nose and making a mental note to go back to the infirmary for maybe some ambrosia or nectar.
“Progress?” Matt says incredulously, shaking his head in disbelief at the new member of his cabin, who was just as annoying as their father. “You call that bloody nose fucking progress!?”
“I mean, I think she likes me,”
Chris snorts from beside Matt. “I think she knocked his head hard,”
Everyone around table eleven started laughing at poor Luke’s misery, making him scowl. “What’s so funny?” He grumbles, wiping his nose once more.
“You,” one of the younger kids chuckled. “Maya rocked your world.”
Fits of laughter broke out, as if they had just played off the greatest prank of all time. Luke sighed, taking another glance at table ten.
Maya was smiling and talking to her siblings as if she hadn’t punched him just a minute ago. The audacity of this girl, Luke thought. Being pretty and all that, who does she think she is?
Matt, as if sensing his thoughts, gave Luke a pat on the shoulder. “Come on, brother, let’s get that nose of yours fixed.”
Luke gave him a small nod before rising to his feet, feeling a little light-headed but managing to walk nonetheless. The son of Hermes took one final glance at table ten before Matt pulled him out, Chris following closely behind.
As soon as the trio were out of earshot of the pavilion, Matt stopped in his tracks, causing Luke to almost trip on a rock. “Hey! What was that for?”
“First thing’s first,” Matt started, taking a look around to see if there was anyone else nearby. “Amaya Williams is never a good idea.”
“Yeah, you told me the first time.” Luke rolled his eyes, mildly getting annoyed at his older brother. “Anything else?” He asked with a sarcastic tone.
“As I was saying,” Matt continued, grabbing Luke by the shoulders. “She is the devil reincarnate. I swear to the gods, Luke, that girl is more terrifying than Zeus.”
“You’re terrified of a girl four years younger than you?” Luke snorts, raising a brow teasingly.
Matt glared at him, letting go of his shoulders. “Yes, I am. As a matter of fact, I’ve been one of her victims.”
“Wait, isn’t that illegal?”
“Yeah, well, nothing’s stopping that girl when she’s set her eye on something,” Matt sighs. “She was thirteen; I was seventeen. I know, I know, it sounds wrong, but she managed to break my heart in a week. I don't know how, she just did.”
“A week?” Luke chuckles, impressed by how quickly Matt got his heart broken. “Wow, that might just be a world record.”
Matt smirked, turning to walk forward. “Her record is three days.”
“Three days!?”
“Come on, lover boy, keep up,” Matt called over his shoulder, laughing slightly. “We gotta get that nose fixed!”
“Yeah, keep up, Luke!” Chris grinned, walking backwards along Matt.
Luke watches his brother’s figure slowly fade from view as he stands there, dumbfounded.
Three days. Maya Williams’ record is three goddamn days.
This is going to be harder than I thought. Luke wasn’t one to be like her, breaking hearts and all that. He was rethinking his decision; he wasn’t sure if he could handle the girl—she was a hurricane of sugar and spice, and it was enough to lure Luke into her blazing winds like an idiot. Who on earth would get into a hurricane for fun?
Sure, Matt and the others have warned him about her, but when has Luke ever listened? He’s lost count of the number of times Thalia has called him a stubborn little shit.
Luke thought back to Maya, her pretty emerald eyes, and how they sparkled with the same mischief he’s seen in his own eyes. He was sure her irises changed into blue, brown, green, and even pink, like a beautiful kaleidoscope of colors. If Luke had stared at her eyes longer, he was sure that he’d be a.) hypnotized, or b.) attacked for staring at her for a long period of time.
“Luke, are you coming?” Chris’ voice snaps him out of his thoughts, remembering his broken nose.
Instinctively, his fingers touch his nose. It was crooked from Maya’s punch; the blood that spilled a few minutes ago was already dry from the summer afternoon breeze. “Yeah, coming!” Luke calls back, running towards his younger brother. “Where’s Matt?”
“Matt went to the cabin, he says he’s gonna go fix a place for you so it’s ready after your nose gets fixed,” Chris explains, wiping sweat off his forehead. “Let’s go, I think Sofia’s still at the Infirmary.”
“Who?”
“Sofia, camp’s head healer. Don’t worry, she’s good! She’s healed me too, twice, I think?” Chris raised his arm up, revealing a long, just starting to heal scar. “I got this yesterday when we were training with swords with Patrick Leon.”
“You good with a sword now, Chris?” Luke asks, smiling at him as the Big House comes into view.
“I think,” Chris says, unsure. “I’m still getting the hang of it.”
“I can help you, if you’d like?”
Chris’ eyes light up at the offer. “Really?”
Luke nods, remembering the times he fought monsters with the sword he and Thalia came upon months ago. “I’ve gotten good with a sword, I guess. I mean, I'm not that good, but I think I can teach you the basics, and such.”
“Teach me, teach me, teach me!” Chris begs, causing Luke to chuckle.
“Of course,” Luke agrees, still chuckling. “Tomorrow, then?”
Chris smiles at his older brother, wrapping his arms around Luke, causing him to stumble back. “Thank you!”
Luke smiles back, patting the boy awkwardly on the back. He’s never had anyone else hug him like this other than Annabeth. For a moment, Luke thought about his little sister. Would she be jealous that he has another sibling? It was nice to have someone rely on him as an older figure. He felt that for the first time, when he and Thalia first found Annabeth, Luke felt responsible for the first time in his life—he had a family, one he didn’t have growing up.
“You’re welcome, kid,” Luke chuckles as Chris pulls away. “Now come on, let’s get my nose fixed.”
The two stepped inside the Big House, Chris leading Luke to the infirmary.
As soon as the duo entered, Luke was engulfed with the smell of freshly baked cookies. It must be the stock of ambrosia. There were cabinets—a lot of them—lining the walls; they were filled with jars of nectar and cubes of ambrosia wrapped individually and sitting in baskets. There were also tables with medical equipment—like bandages, gauze, antiseptics, and more. Luke wondered why he and Annabeth hadn’t noticed the contents of the room earlier; maybe they were just too tired to even notice.
“I see you have a broken nose.” A voice spoke, startling Luke. The girl looked around Matt’s age; she had short blonde hair with pink ends and was wearing scrubs. She reminded Luke of the nurse in the show Thalia showed him once. “Hi, I’m Sofia.” she smiled, reaching out a hand for him to shake.
“Luke,” Luke smiles back, taking her hand. Sofia seemed kind; that was good. Luke had a fear of nurses before. When he was in kindergarten, he needed a flu shot, and the nurse who gave him the vaccine was not very nice.
“Let me guess, a certain daughter of Aphrodite?” Sofia asked, pulling her hand away with a knowing smile.
“How’d you know?”
“Well, with the number of kids I had to fix up in the past two years, I’d say I know who the culprit is. A pretty little devil, she is.”
Chris sat down on one of the beds, his feet swaying back and forth. “Maya punched him super hard, and today's his first day,”
“And on your first day?” Sofia chuckles, making her way towards one of the cabinets, grabbing a basket full of ambrosia and a few jars of nectar. She placed them on one of the tables; maybe it was a refill of stocks, but Luke wasn’t sure. “You’ve got guts, huh?”
“You could say that,” Luke laughed sheepishly. “I just tried to be friends with her.”
“Yeah, right,” Sofia laughs, not believing Luke in the slightest. “Sit beside Chris, I’ll clean that blood off,” she says, jerking her head in Chris’ direction.
Luke nods, making his way to sit beside his brother as he watches Sofia get some cotton balls and alcohol from the tables around the room.
“Here, eat this,” Sofia gave him half a square of ambrosia. It smelled like the cookies his mother used to bake—the good ones that weren’t burned to a crisp. Luke muttered a quick thank you before taking a bite.
Sofia poured alcohol onto the cotton ball. "Okay, so what did you do to earn a broken nose?”
“He tried flirting with Maya,” Chris answers with a grin. “We tried to warn him, but he wouldn’t listen.”
“You should’ve listened,” Sofia hummed, cleaning the blood off Luke's skin. “That girl? She’s a feisty one.”
“Yeah, a real spitfire.” Luke snorts, shaking his head slightly. His thoughts went back to the girl in question, her voice as sweet as honey replaying in his head. Luke wondered if every child of Aphrodite was like her, with a voice so enticing.
“There,” Sofia says, putting the used cotton ball to the side. “All clean! Just finish up the ambrosia, and you’ll be good, unless you plan to get acquainted with Maya’s fist again.”
Probably will. “I won’t, thanks.” Luke hopped off the table, Chris following suit.
“Thanks, Sofia!” Chris waves before getting out the door with Luke.
“Don’t get into trouble!” Luke hears Sofia call out, making him chuckle. Trouble, what a strange concept for a runaway son of Hermes.
“Come on, let’s go to our cabin. I bet Matt’s already got you somewhere to sleep.”
“Why is everything so far apart?” Luke mutters as the two walk out of the Big House.
“Dunno,” Chris shrugs. “I think everyone’s just gotten used to it.”
“You’re used to it?”
Chris shakes his head. “No, but I try to. I mean, I’m not gonna get anywhere if I don’t walk.”
“Fair point,”
The two continued to walk, passing by the volleyball pit with high school age kids playing a heated match and then the canoe lake, where a few kids were chatting and others were paddling on boats.
Finally, they arrived at the cabins. There were twelve of them, nestled in the woods by the lake. They were arranged in a U-shape, with two at the base and five in a row on either side. Each had a large brass number above the door (odds on the left side, evens on the right), and they looked absolutely nothing like Luke expected.
Number nine had smokestacks, like a tiny factory. Number four had tomato vines on the walls and a roof made out of real grass. Seven seemed to be made of solid gold, which gleamed so much in the sunlight that it was almost impossible to look at. They all faced a common area about the size of a soccer field, dotted with Greek statues, fountains, flower beds, and a couple of basketball hoops. In the center of the field was a huge stone-lined fire pit.
Out of all the cabins, eleven looked the most like a regular old camp cabin, with an emphasis on old. The threshold was worn down, and the brown paint was peeling. Over the doorway was a caduceus. Inside, it was packed with people, both boys and girls—way more than the number of bunk beds. Sleeping bags were spread all over the floor. Luke thought Hermes was the god of money, and he can’t even afford a bigger cabin?
“Luke, over here!” Luke heard Matt’s voice calling him over. He made his way towards Matt while Chris sped off to some of the other campers who were all hunched over something Luke thought to be interesting to a nine-year-old boy.
“I got you a sleeping bag.” Matt jerked his head towards the sleeping bag on the floor. “And some toiletries from the camp store. Grover brought over your things too.”
“Thanks, Matt,”
“No problem.” Matt smiles, giving him a pat on the arm.
Luke took a look around the worn-out cabin. All the campers were younger than him, even the ones during lunch were significantly younger too. He wonders how on earth Matt managed to look after a cabin full of kids. Since with Thalia and Annabeth, Luke was on the verge of pulling his own hair out.
“Hey, Luke?”
“Yeah?” Luke hums, his attention going back to Matt.
“I’m going off to college by the end of August,”
“Oh,” Luke murmured, wondering why he’s telling him that he’s going to college in two months. “Good for you.”
“You’re the oldest, after me,” Matt explains. “I think you’d be a great head counselor for eleven.”
“Me?” Luke asks, confused as to why Matt thinks he’d be a great counselor.
“Yeah, you’re the best candidate, since you’re fourteen and quite responsible.”
Luke sighs, shaking his head. “I’m honored, Matt, really, but I don’t think I can handle it.”
“Of course, you can! You’ve taken care of a kid before, right? Annabeth? It’ll be fine, trust me. And besides, you’ll get my bunk!”
Luke raises a brow at him. “That’s comforting, how?”
“Come on, it’s a good deal. I mean, you get a comfy bed.” Matt pushed, hoping Luke would agree.
“Again, how?”
“You’d have a few benefits, like staying out late, chaperoning trips to Olympus, and giving out orders and punishments.”
Luke thought about it. Staying out late did sound nice, especially when he wanted to get some time alone. Chaperoning seems a little overwhelming, but giving out orders and punishments is rather tempting. “Alright, I agree.”
Matt clapped his hands together. “Great! I’ll tell Chiron by the end of next month. But you’ve got to keep it a secret, alright? We don’t need people getting mad about the decision.”
“My lips are sealed,” Luke chuckles, running a finger over his lips, as if he were zipping them.
“Now, come on, let’s get you toured!”
6:00 pm
Luke stumbles into the dining pavilion with Matt and Chris, laughing heartily. The boys, sweaty and hungry, made their way to their table for dinner—barbeque brisket and mac and cheese, which made Luke’s stomach grumble at the smell alone.
“I’m starving!” Chris says, plopping onto one of the seats of eleven. “I think I can eat a whole bowl of food!”
Luke sat beside him, grinning from ear to ear. “Me too; I think I could eat a whole pegasus,” he laughs, reaching for a grape from the bowl in the middle of their table as he takes a look around the pavilion in search of Annabeth.
He spots Annabeth, smiling happily at one of her sisters, as she explains something—about architecture, Luke assumed, since Annabeth babbles about it most of the time—to her. Luke waves at his little sister, who beams at him and waves back before turning back to face her sister.
Luke's gaze then fell on the table right across his, flaming red hair settling into his view. Maya had her hair done in some sort of braid, Luke didn’t know what it was called, but it was pretty. It made her look like a Greek princess—duh—as she talked to one of her brothers, a strawberry blush on her cheeks and lips matching her locks.
“You’re staring at her,” Matt whispers in his ear with a chuckle. “Careful, you don’t want another broken nose.”
“I wasn’t staring,” Luke scowls at his brother, rolling his eyes. “I was thinking of how to make her fall in love with me.”
“Tough luck, kid!” Matt laughs, shaking his head. “She’s a hard one; as I’ve told you, she’s the–”
“I know, she’s the devil reincarnate, you’ve been telling me the whole day.”
Matt sighs, taking a sip of his drink. “So, stop trying your luck, it’s not worth any of the trouble.”
“Yeah, but you’ve got to admit that it’s fun.” Luke chuckles, reaching for the goblet in front of him. “What do I do again with this?”
“Ask it for whatever you want to drink, non-alcoholic, of course,” Matt answers before chugging his own drink. “Like so, raspberry lemonade.”
Luke watches as the cup fills on its own with pink liquid. “Woah,” he mumbles, before turning to his own. “Cherry coke.” The goblet in his hands filled as quickly as Matt’s did, fizzy dark liquid right in front of his eyes. “So cool!”
Luke wonders what Annabeth asked for in the goblet. His little sister never liked fizzy drinks; she says it makes her tummy feel funny. Maybe she went for a lemonade, like Matt, or an orange or pineapple juice because of its benefits, as she’s told him and Thalia so many times to even count. Thalia would prefer a crisp root beer. No more questions with that; Luke’s learned that the hard way.
Luke’s eyes landed again on Maya, making him wonder what her favorite drink is too. Maybe strawberry soda? Or maybe she doesn’t like soda? Maybe she prefers juice, like Annabeth does. Whatever she preferred, Luke was sure it was delicious, like his cherry coke.
“You coming to the bonfire later or are you heading straight to bed?” Chris asks through bites of food, sounding a little unintelligible, but Luke manages to understand.
“What do you guys even do at bonfires?”
“Well, for starters, we sing,” Matt chuckles. “But usually, the Aphrodite kids request songs that are, in my opinion, better than what we got used to singing. Down by the Aegean? Hell no, Uptown Girl is better.”
“I heard Chiron’s going to announce whether we have Capture the Flag next week.” One of the campers in table eleven piped up.
“Capture the flag?”
“It’s a camp tradition, kind of like War Games,” Matt answers, seeming a little excited. “It’s a weekly game, although it’s been canceled for the last two weeks because of a flu outbreak. It’s where two teams are given a flag each to protect. To win, one team must capture the opponent’s flag and bring it over the creek, which is the border.”
“Sounds fun,” Luke comments. “Which team are we on?”
“Blue,” Matt grumbles, turning to look at the Ares table. “With cabins six and seven.”
“Athena and Apollo, right?”
“Yeah,” Matt nods, sighing softly. “The losing team.”
“Red always wins,” Chris says, a frown making its way onto his lips. “Ares, Aphrodite, Demeter, Dionysus, and Hephaestus. Matt says it’s been years since Blue won a match.”
“Aphrodite plays in the games?” Luke snorts. “Aren’t they supposed to be prissy princes and princesses?”
“I wish they were,”
Luke turned to look back at table ten. Maya was sitting on the table, legs crossed over each other, as she laughed with a boy around their age. Luke was sure that the boy wasn’t her sibling—judging by the way he looked at her, that weasel of a boy had intentions. Luke wasn’t that worried, since Maya looked like she knew what she was doing. Another notch on her belt, perhaps, that boy.
All of a sudden, an idea came into Luke’s mind. The son of Hermes stood up from his seat, fixing his shirt (as if that would help) and messing his hair up slightly.
“Where are you going?” Matt asks, eyes narrowed at Luke. “Don’t you think about it, Luke,” he warned, despite knowing that Luke would.
“Watch me get the girl,” Luke smirks at his brother, before sauntering over to the table right across eleven’s.
Matt groaned, shaking his head. “Why must you give me stubborn siblings, Dad?” He mutters, running a hand over his face in frustration.
As soon as Luke arrives at table ten, he smiles at the daughters of Aphrodite before slinging his arm over Maya’s shoulder—who didn’t seem to notice his presence until now.
The head counselor of cabin ten glares at him, but before she could utter a word, Luke turned his attention to the confused boy in front of them. “Hey man, what are you doing talking to my girl?” Luke asks, raising a brow at the boy standing just a few inches away.
Maya scoffs, pushing Luke’s arm off of her. “I am not-”
“You can go now,” Luke tells the boy, waving his hand and dismissing him like a servant he’s seen in shows before. The boy glares at Luke before making his way back to his own table, which was Hephaestus’.
“You son of a bitch!” Maya hisses, pushing him away from her. Her eyes turned an angry shade of black, and she glared at him intensely. “Do you have any fucking idea who you’re messing with!?”
“My, my, princess, such vulgar language,” Luke grins, leaning forward, leaving little over an inch of space between him and the devil.
“Let's not repeat lunch, shall we?” Maya says through gritted teeth, her eyes shifting back to emerald green as she takes three steps away from Luke.
"Oh, but princess, I don't think you'd want to hit me with Chiron and Mr. D around, do you?” Luke smirks, leaning against the table slightly, looking a little arrogant for Maya’s liking.
“You think I won’t, newbie?”
“I think,” Luke starts, rubbing his chin dramatically, like he’s seen Thalia do before when they acted out shows for Annabeth. “You’re pretty hot when you’re mad.”
“You’ve got some nerve, don’t you?” Maya scowls at Luke, folding her arms over her chest.
“What? I’m just trying to be nice, princess.”
“I swear to the gods, if you call me that one more time, newbie,”
“You’ll what?” Luke taunts, taking a step forward, a smirk on his annoying face.
“You’re fucking asking for it.” Maya growls, grabbing his arm and twisting it over his back with a hard downward thrust. Everyone was looking at them, and it got Luke thinking why on earth is everyone just staring at them rather than stopping her from breaking his bones like sticks.
“Ouch, woman! Violence is never the answer!” Luke struggled in her grasp; for a girl, the son of Hermes had to admit that she was strong—stronger than Thalia, perhaps? Luke wondered if he could beat the daughter of Aphrodite in a sword fight, though.
Maya let go of his arm, pushing him slightly away. “That should teach you,” she smiled, that sickeningly sweet smile of hers that was beginning to grow on him. The head of cabin ten turned around, making her way back to her seat, her long braided hair looking like a blazing whip in the evening light.
“Damn, princess, you’re making this harder for me than it is for you,” Luke smirks, shaking his arm to make sure he can still move it after Maya’s attempt to break it.
Maya stopped in her tracks, just barely a foot from her seat beside Silena, and before Luke Castellan could avoid it, Amaya Williams charged at him, her fist colliding with his face, again.

Hardwick House?
Yay thank you for asking! This is the one I'm most excited about. It's the story of Kang Seon-hwa, the daughter of a prominent politician in Joseon-era Korea. When a political upheaval lands her father in prison and gets her husband killed, Seon-hwa isn't sure what to do next — until a British missionary she knows suggests a fresh start in London. Seon-hwa eventually accepts and boards a ship to England. She arrives just around the time of Queen Victoria's coronation and is hosted by the Hardwick family.
The story picks up six months after she's arrived in London. She's having a difficult time adjusting to the new culture and feels lonely, with her maid Da-som being the only other person there who speaks Korean. Enter a strange young man who suddenly appears in her room one morning. After the shock of finding him there, she soon discovers that the man is Henry Song, a third-generation Korean immigrant who lives in Hardwick House in 2023 and has accidentally discovered a time portal in his house. The curiosity of the situation and the comforting presence of a fellow Korean in the midst of London leads Seon-hwa and Henry back and forth across the portal as they form a friendship.
I first wrote this as an assignment for my film class, as a short story and then a script. The most complete version that currently exists is the script, but I do intend to expand it into a full book eventually. Here's a page from the script:
And a couple of pages from my storyboard:
#thank you so much for the ask!!#I'm glad you asked about one of my two original stories 🙈 especially this one#it's my most fleshed-out idea (maybe ever??) and I do love it so#and I'd never really gotten the chance to just explain it before#ask elly#fictionadventurer#elly writes!#hardwick house

OC tober Day 11: Symbolism/Themes
They are very much cool jock girl 4 rich mean girl. Ellis is constantly draping her leather jacket around Isa's shoulders as she cools down and picks the viscera from her nails. Despite the fact Ellis could probably catch a bullet with her teeth, Isa insists on standing between her and danger, sometimes so proactively Ellis has to talk her "princess" down from some truly unhinged plans. Their players are married irl and it is a treat to watch them get to go nuclear for each other.
Reposting this gigantic illustration from our New York After the End vtm game 🧛♀️
This one is full of symbolism, from official vtm lore to real maps of nyc's watershed.
Ellis and Isa are the oldest vampires in our coterie, a gangrel and a lasombra respectively. Their shared penchant for vampiric history brought them together in the late 80's and they slowburned for a few decades before finally admiting their feelings in the "present" of 2007. Kindred weave a tangled web so Kath (my pc) is very glad to have these two nerds around to unravel the mysteries that pursue them. Ellis and Isa may be the brains, but they're also the brawn. Ellis can punch your heart straight out of your chest and Isa gleefully plumbs the depths of her mastery over shadows and the abyss to throw people around the room at the slightest provocation.
^one more for the road :)
