I have a follow up question which is What's Going On With Kathleen?
lol oh man. the real question is what ISN'T going on with kathleen
she was......... A Real Character that's for sure. interpreted in all sorts of bonkers ways by posterity because she refuses to fit into any sort of neat historical categorization as far as "wives of famous heroes" go. she was a strident anti-suffragist, loud in her universal hatred of other women, obsessive about maintaining her virginity amongst swarms of admirers in fin-de-siecle paris, determined to find a worthy father for her destined son, despite her occasional wishes she could have a son without marrying at all...
back to spufford, who wrote really wonderfully about kathleen:
She does not mind the election to muse and taskmistress; but she did not choose it, and again Scott has perhaps slightly misread her. The Woman One Must Strive For is a cartoon out of the male mind, and only approximates Kathleen. It is true that she plays up to it. It is true that she has something of the presenter of white feathers about her, blithely demanding bravery in circumstances her gender prevents her from experiencing. But her vicarious involvement in his polar life is more generous than that, and her emotions more detached from the public failure or success of the expedition than Scott imagines. Their marriage would not be ruined (as he sometimes fears) if he returned having failed to reach the pole, or (now his fears have coalesced into a Norwegian) having failed to beat Amundsen. The self-invented code she lives by has an eccentric stoicism as a main tenet. Nothing will be allowed to hurt enough to take the joy out of her life. When Scott moped once about the future, she had replied, in italics, 'I shall be happy whatever things happen and that is true!' She would contrive to be happy if he came home defeated; she would manage somehow to make it not matter; though whether he would be able to endure that particular demonstration of her self-sufficiency is another question.
in terms of the polycule chart, her connection to nansen comes from a set of historical letters between him and her that demonstrate certainly that he was in love with her, and that she felt something for him in return—but whether they actually consummated an affair is disputed. roland huntford, rolanding away, claims that clearly they obviously did, but wayland young (kathleen's son from her second marriage) was able to dispute that fairly easily based on evidence from the letters which huntford actively ignored.
but it's clear she had certain qualities which caused everything from obsession to revulsion to confusion in the people that she encountered. when she had to suffer the company of Hilda Evans and Oriana Wilson during the terra nova's time in new zealand it ended in violent fighting, with oates comparing the scene to a "Chicago slaughterhouse" with blood and hair flying everywhere. her overbearing presence during the loading of cargo annoyed the hell out of bowers. later, when cherry published Worst Journey, she took issue with Scott being described at times unflatteringly—despite Cherry's clear affection for him elsewhere in the book. this caused a fatal rupture in their friendship, which up until then had seen kathleen bringing her young son and many admirers (including nansen lol) to cherry's country estate.
anyway, that's about all i got, but there is a biography by her granddaughter louisa young which i have not read but is based partially on her diaries/autobiography, so if you want to know more about her you could start there!

Mrs Scott and Mrs Evans had a magnificent battle, they tell me it was a draw after 15 rounds. Mrs Wilson flung herself into the fight after the 10th round and there was more blood and hair flying about the hotel than you see in a Chicargo [sic] slaughter-house in a month.
The Soldier's letter to his mother, 23 November, 1910, quoted by Diana Preston in A First Rate Tragedy.
The excerpt above describes a hellish argument between Kathleen Scott and Hilda Evans, with failed mediation attempt by Oriana Wilson, which happened in Christchurch, New Zealand. It was the first example of Soldier's wit I encountered and I was roaring with laughter in absolute delight as this is totally my kind of humour. That was when I decided to get to know this man better and boy, I did not get disappointed.

Loving a Monster - Evan Character Study
E: After waiting for so many years, it is finally going to be over.
Fortunately, he already saw the end of the night.
As a character, if Mo Yi asks the question of "What is it to love as a human?" and Xu Mo asks the question "What is it to be human?" then Evan asks the question of "What is it to live?".
Hello, I'm jumping around fandoms and dropping character essays all over the place LOL. First, I want to disclaim that everyone is free to focus on aspects of a character that speaks to them and, as long as these are based in canon material, I don't think anyone's interpretation is wrong, we just relate to different themes.
In my case, I was blown away by the latest chapters in Light and Night because it confirmed my suspicions... which is that Evan is a nihilistic monster and I love him. Spoilers up to Chapter 9 of Light and Night, including all the released cards. All translations are mine. Also, just as a note, his Chinese name is Lu Chen so his surname is Lu.
UNSETTLING SIGNS
First, I want to share the initial impressions he gave off before Chapters 9 and 10 were released because it was after reading these that I went "Oh, hm... that's a bit disturbing in terms of implications".
[SR String Notes Resembling You DATE] Context here is that Evan went to London to attend the funeral of a professor whom he was close to and, as the heroine consoles him, he ends up saying this.
E: Actually, I am not very sad.
E: I forgot from which book I read this passage.
E: “Your encounter with the world will be a desperate wail; all you’ll be able to do at first will be to cry.”
E: “Everything will make you cry: light, hunger, anger.”
E: The suffering in life will forever be more than the pleasure, so is death not a type of release?
E: People in this world suffer from the loss of their close friends or relatives; the essence of which is for their own suffering, it is the suffering of life.
E: However, Professor Moran has passed away and will never again be disturbed by this kind of suffering, and this is also a good thing.
Quite a nihilistic view of the world, no? For brevity, I didn't include a lot of scenes but there were descriptions about how Evan seemed like he was separated by an invisible wall from the grief of others, such as Professor Moran's wife.
However, that being said, I love our heroine's words to him because she knows the book that he quoted from and there is more to it. She also points out that his act of rushing over to London to attend the funeral shows his feelings for Professor Moran, even if he does not feel the same grief as others.
MC: It came from a famous journalist, Oriana Fallaci, and her novel “Letter to a Child Never Born”.
MC: “Your encounter with the world will be a desperate wail; all you’ll be able to do at first will be to cry.”
MC: “Everything will make you cry: light, hunger, anger.”
MC: “Weeks will go by, months, before your mouth opens in a smile.”
MC: “Before your throat gurgles out a laugh.”
MC: “But you mustn’t get discouraged.”
MC: “And when the smile comes, when the laugh comes, you must give it to me.”
It's a very rousing speech and she ends this by saying that she will present another side of life to him. She will find these smiles and laughs and bring it to him. I also have a crack theory that because Blood Tribe members are rumored to descend from gods and the heroine seems to have the soul of one in her, she is basically Evan's great-great-great-great-ancestor telling him to live, much like the mother in that story writing to her unborn baby.
Moving on, during a camping trip, the heroine was just having a chat with Evan but the conversation takes this turn.
[SSR Secrets in the Shade DATE]
MC: When you're feeling down or that things are difficult, just fantasize about a wonderful life after achieving your goals.
[...]
E: After I achieve my goals?
E: At that time, perhaps everything won't be important anymore.
Do you see a trend here? Mr. Nihilism is just ever-present, but there is also a disturbing implication that he doesn't intend to have a life after he does what he's set out to do. So, I had these thoughts drifting around in my brain and when they released the new chapters all of these little incidences rushed to the forefront of my brain again.
[SSR Illusionary Light - Robot Humans PHONE CALL]
E: That people would not notice robot humans may not be because they truly cannot see anything unusual.
E: But that they see it and choose not to speak or ask questions, only using various excuses to avoid, distance, or conceal their own indifference.
[...]
MC: If there is a day where I notice something unusual about you, I also wouldn't "turn a blind eye"!
E: ... Even if that was the better choice?
Look, despite LYT being a terrible person, I have to admit he was skilled because the line delivery here was godly because it made me shoot up in my chair. This was the phone call associated with the chapter card for Chapter 9 and I can only say this is pure foreshadowing.
The last nail that settled all my suspicions of Evan's character were his lines in the PV itself.
[PV - FLAME AND ASHES] "Regardless of when you look outside, life is like a cage. Everything here makes you lose hope, including ourselves.
Do you still not understand? It is not because of disease and natural disasters, but our self-importance and dispassion, as well as our hate for each other, that makes this world fall into disaster again and again.
Expectations always makes people disillusioned, and so I choose to give up on expectations."
PAST
Now, hopefully your appetite has been whetted with those unsettling crumbs, and now we come to the main meal. To understand a character, we always have to look at their past and so much was revealed in Evan's case.
[CHAPTER 9]
He suddenly realized he was fighting an unwinnable battle against the world.
In his parents' eyes, he was a continuation of the bloodline.
In his grandfather's eyes, he happened to have some talent, withstood the tests, and could be used.
In outsiders' eyes, he was the blessed young master of the Lu Family who wanted for nothing.
Then what about in his own eyes? Who was he? Was he Evan? But who was Evan?
Letting the people who chased behind him bring him away, the young man discovered to his horror that this time he wouldn't resist anymore.
He is also the son of a traitor and so he was bullied excessively in the family. At 12 years of age, they are exiled into the wilderness and only those who survive get looked upon highly by the family head. They also undergo even more training, involving killing innocent people, and, yes, Evan did that too.
Terribly enough, Evan nonchalantly talks about an experience he had in the woods in a date before this chapter came out and, after hearing about this rite of passage, we now know this was what he went through.
[SSR Secrets in the Shade DATE]
E: Mm, it was when I was a child and driven into the woods for the first time.
E: I witnessed wild beasts hunting and escaped from a snake's mouth. I felt that the forest was full of dangers and only wanted to get out of there quickly.
E: And just when I was hungry and exhausted, I saw a bamboo mushroom.
E: At the time, I didn't know what it was and whether or not it was poisonous. I abandoned myself to hopelessness and thought that I might as well pluck it and eat it, resigning myself to fate.
Can you imagine a 12 year old having to make that decision? The matter-of-fact tone he had here and the words "abandoned myself to hopelessness" and "resigned myself to fate". I can easily imagine all these small moments chipping away at his sanity and will to live.
Two other major events happened. One was that he had a rabbit once, she ran up to his window while he was practicing the cello after escaping from a predator and he started raising her. It's implied that the head of the family found out and well...
[SSR Illusionary Light - 14 Years Ago Summer TRAJECTORY]
The third thing I lost was a rabbit.
She always looked at me with those compassionate red eyes, as if she knew everything about me. Her ears were like a pair of wings. After having her, I learned how to look in the mirror. I didn't understand why some red eyes could be so pure and have such strong, extravagant emotions. Even her absent look was fascinating, like two pieces of glass that reflected how barren and dirty I was.
She pitied me and I fed her. This delicate balance stopped me from bowing my head down in front of her.
Whenever I stroked her soft fur, there was always a deep melancholy in my heart. I was afraid that one day she would get tired of me because she saw through me. So, I started to work hard to smile in the mirror and practiced being a person who could give her a future. Occasionally, I would see my eyes become pure in the mirror, although only for a moment.
But then one day she died.
In the fall, he found her grave and dug her up because he didn't want her to lie directly in the cold dirt. But all he could find was the smell of rot and two bones. The story is a little scarily dark because he self-harms here and hallucinates the rabbit's voice, but this last exchange is significant.
[SSR Illusionary Light - 14 Years Ago Fall TRAJECTORY]
—Tell me, where have you been these days?
—Or, take me with you.
This time, no one could stop my footsteps and, when the blood ran out, I would be free.
The second major event is that Evan's mother died in an "accident" and when he visit her grave for the first time he has these lines.
[SSR Illusionary Light - 11 Years Ago Mid-Autumn TRAJECTORY]
E: Why does fate love to play with people? People who don't wish to live can always escape death, but those who want to live well are killed in an accident.
E: If I was the one who drowned, that would probably be best for everyone. I'm really not afraid.
PRESENT
So, what has he become now after undergoing all those experiences and training? He's become someone so controlled that there were rumors in the company that he's a robot. He's considerate and gentle towards everyone, but it's to such a precise degree, no more and no less, that it doesn't mean anything anymore.
Naturally, because this is an otome game, he does treat the heroine with more warmth and specialness than he does others. However, there was a part in Chapter 9 that sent chills down my spine.
[CHAPTER 9]
MC: I'll bring you out of here and we'll go outside.
[...]
E: Is there any difference between outside and inside?
MC: They're different!
MC: Outside there's the warm sun, a gentle breeze, lively crowds of people, and lots of delicious food...
MC: And if you're willing, I'll listen to you tell your story, and then—
I turned my head back, came into contact with eyes that were smiling, and suddenly all my words were stuck in my throat.
I clearly felt that he didn't care about those things at all. He disdained those things.
This time, the rousing heroine's speech did not work on a love interest and, in fact, at the end of Chapter 9 you realize that Evan was testing the heroine in this moment and made her legitimately feel like she was going to die in order to confirm his suspicions about a plot item.
In his second visit to his mother, which seems to happen at the start of the game.
[SSR Illusionary Light - Half a Year Ago Early Spring TRAJECTORY]
E: Actually... I didn't plan on returning to this country.
E: It's my wish to die in a foreign land.
[...]
E: Then can you tell me, whether the accident of that year was not just an accident?
E: This is probably the one matter I cannot set down.
E: In these past 20 years, I have been the blade in the hands of others and I don't want to go on like this anymore.
E: I am the only survivor left of that year. Those servants and doctors, those who could leave left and those who should disappear disappeared.
E: I want a truth.
E: If I was warped by hatred, would you dislike me?
Bringing back what he says at the very top:
E: After waiting for so many years, it is finally going to be over.
Fortunately, he already saw the end of the night.
Evan is a vengeful monster born from a family of monsters and, after all these years of waiting, he has come back to swallow them whole. It's pretty explicit at this point that he is on a path of revenge, which he does not expect to step out from alive, and will even use the heroine as a weapon. Even though he doesn't feel the expected happiness at discovering her, the best weapon, first before anyone else, he is still set on his course.
FUTURE
Honestly, I'm a little in awe of Light and Night's writing team for setting up his character like this because Evan has this terribly frightening side and yet his gentleness, consideration, and warmth to the heroine are not entirely fake either? It's genuine but it also runs parallel to his quest of revenge. I'm definitely looking forward to the moment where these two things actually come into conflict and he has to choose one over the other.
I am also looking for more philosophical clashes between him and his heroine, because as we can see from the heroine's failed speech, he doesn't actually believe in her words or care for those things. All I can say is that we have only taken the first step up the mountain that is overcoming Evan's nihilism LOL. He’s a monster made out of circumstances, but a gentle one.
Lastly, I'll leave everyone with this description of one of his card evolution items because, oof, it hurts.
[DEVIL'S TRUMPETS]
"Someone like him should not have light."
Devil's trumpets (or datura) is a poisonous plant belonging to the nightshade family. Such a fitting flower for Evan and ironic that it's frequently mistaken for another flower called angel's trumpets (just as poisonous).

hi megan! a little bit of an unusual request, but can you rec any fcs that would make good mascots for an rp main’s admin posts? so preferably someone with a variety of gif icons where they look pretty friendly! the rp itself is a little bit of a darker, more serious, plot-heavy thing, if that makes a difference. thank you!
Yeah absolutely! So for those I like to pick singers, models, or people who mostly have interview and/or photoshoot gif icons. I've also included some options of FCs that I don't see often on taken lists.

Cape Crozier: The Winter Journey
As usual, please go to the original blog to see everything formatted properly. I will attempt to put most of this under a cut, here. Forgive me if it fails.
Tumblr media
On the morning of 27 June 1911, three men set out from Cape Evans, on the balmy west coast of Ross Island, to cross to the east coast via its southern shore.  Wilson, their leader, wanted to acquire some Emperor penguin embryos, and the only known Emperor rookery was just off Cape Crozier.  Based on the chicks he had seen in September the last time he was in Antarctica, Wilson estimated that the eggs would be laid in early July, so he timed the trip to meet them at the right stage of development and to coincide with the full moon, to have the best visibility in a world of 24-hour night.
Wilson had discussed this mission with his assistant, Cherry-Garrard, when the latter was applying to join the Expedition.  Once in Antarctica, they agreed the obvious choice for a third was Bowers, who had amply proven his energy, enthusiasm, strength, resourcefulness, and resistance to cold.
Tumblr media
To reach Cape Crozier at the full moon in early July meant leaving Cape Evans at the new moon, and so shortly after the solstice that most of the day was nearly black, lit only by the stars shining hard in the sky, and occasionally the aurora.  The first part of the journey was over very familiar territory, so the greatest difficulty was learning how to camp when one could hardly see anything and it was too cold to take one's mitts off or touch any metal.  So far, so surmountable.
The tune changed as soon as they left the sea ice and got onto the permanent ice of the Barrier (or Ross Ice Shelf, as it is now known).
They left the tempering effect of the open ocean behind, and were under the influence of the frigid interior.  The air temperature plunged, and worse, for men hauling everything necessary for life on two 9ft sledges, they soon entered a zone of soft snow.
Runners slide over snow by melting the surface with friction – the glide is, in fact, slipping over a thin film of liquid water.  At such low temperatures, friction is not sufficient to melt anything, so the grains of snow act more like sand.  A hard, wind-polished surface would be like sandpaper, but in the deep soft snow it was like dragging a dead weight through the Sahara, albeit a Sahara where a day of -50°F felt like a warm spell.
Tumblr media
They couldn't drag both sledges at once, so they had to take one forward, then retrace their steps and drag the other.  For every mile of forward progress, they actually covered three.  In the dead calm, they could use a naked candle to follow their outward steps back to fetch the second sledge.  Eight hours of dragging seldom got them more than two miles from where they started, and ended with the slow process of pitching camp.  After getting the tent up, the day's cook would burn his fingers on freezing tin matchboxes in a quest for a match free of frost, before he could get the Primus stove going.  Eventually the travellers would get some hot liquid in them –
Directly we started to drink then the effect was wonderful: it was, said Wilson, like putting a hot-water bottle against your heart.  The beats became very rapid and strong and you felt the warmth travelling outwards and downwards. [250]
  – and then, after checking their feet for frostbites, it was time to thaw their way into their frozen sleeping bags for a miserable attempt at sleep.
For me it was a very bad night: a succession of shivering fits which I was quite unable to stop, and which took possession of my body for many minutes at a time until I thought my back would break, such was the strain placed upon it.  They talk of chattering teeth: but when your body chatters you may call yourself cold. [241]  We knew we did sleep, for we heard one another snore, and also we used to have dreams and nightmares; but we had little consciousness of it, and we were now beginning to drop off when we halted on the march. [245]
It was important for every field party to take regular meteorological observations, to contribute to an understanding of the region's weather.  At regular intervals through the day, Bowers would take an air temperature reading, and while they were sleeping, a minimum thermometer was placed under the sledge to measure the temperature in a sheltered place.  On 6 July, this got down to -75°F; the following afternoon, Bowers' thermometer registered -77.5°F. The day lives in my memory as that on which I found out that records are not worth making. [247-8]
Tumblr media
The clear cold of the first part of their journey had given way to a fog, which diffused the little moonlight they got and obscured the terrain until they were practically right on top of it.  As they were rounding the heel of Mt Terror this meant crevasses, and not being able to tell where they were until one fell through, which was a nerve-wracking business on top of the sleep deprivation and physical hardship.
The horror of the nineteen days it took us to travel from Cape Evans to Cape Crozier would have to be re-experienced to be appreciated; and any one would be a fool who went again: it is not possible to describe it.  The weeks which followed were comparative bliss, not because our conditions were better – they were far worse – but because we were callous.  I for one had come to that point of suffering at which I did not really care if only I could die without much pain.  They talk of the heroism of the dying – they little know – it would be so easy to die, a dose of morphia, a friendly crevasse, and blissful sleep.  The trouble is to go on. . . . [237]
Finally they were on the home stretch, a narrow lane between the rough terrain of the land and the great pressure waves where the Barrier presses up against Ross Island as it flows out to sea.  This proved to be nearly impossible to keep to, in the poor light, but after much stumbling, and with a welcome rise in temperature to the mere -20s, they finally reached a moraine just short of the Knoll, within hiking distance of the Emperor colony huddled in the lee of the Barrier face below.  They pitched their tent on an icy smooth snow slope 150 yards down from the ridge, and the following day set about building a igloo near the top, using the exposed volcanic stone found there, in a method Cherry had been practising at Cape Evans.  July 16th, when they established the hut, was Wilson's wedding anniversary, and in the privacy of his diary at least, he named the igloo Oriana Hut, and the moraine Oriana Ridge, after his wife.  The others proposed 'Terra Igloo', 'The House on the Hill,' and 'Bleak House.'  In the South Polar Times, after their return, Bowers immortalised it in rhyme as 'The House That Cherry Built.'  On official Antarctic maps, though, it's now labelled Wilson's Igloo and the moraine is Igloo Spur.
Tumblr media
Our trip to Cape Crozier was a walk in the park – 35 minutes in a helicopter watching the amazing views roll by – and our greatest challenge was finding the landing site, but that was only a question of how close it was to the GPS waymark, rather than whether we could land at all.  We were not exempt from the vagaries of Antarctic weather, however.  When our flight got the green light, the weather at Cape Crozier was 30% cloud with 7-knot winds.  Not your typical Cape Crozier weather, but great weather for helicopters.  By the time we arrived, 35 minutes later, it was 70% cloud, a fog was rolling in, and winds were at 30 knots.  I was warned our time here might be short.  But we set off to see the igloo anyway.

The plan had been to build the body of the igloo in stone, then bank up the walls with gravel and snow to make them weatherproof.  Unlike a stereotypical snow-block igloo, it was not a dome, but would be roofed using one of the sledges as a beam, with a canvas sheet spread over it, firmly anchored in the rocks.  This has an Arctic precedent: in Francis McClintock's account of his search for the lost Franklin Expedition in the 1850s, he describes meeting an Inuit woman who lived in a stone igloo of very similar construction.  Cherry's practice igloo at Cape Evans was an admirable structure, but the plan went awry at Cape Crozier, on account of a lack of gravel and all the snow in the vicinity being blown so hard as to be practically ice [261].  They improvised as best they could, chipping some slabs of ice out of the snowbank and leaning them against the exterior walls, but it was not as cosy a structure as they'd hoped, and they ended up stuffing spare socks into some of the larger gaps in the stones to keep out the wind.  This wind, they discovered on their second day of building, was much stronger at the top of the ridge than where they had made camp on the snow.  But the stone walls were more secure than the tent – which was left pitched outside the igloo's door for storage – and heralded a new 'Age of Stone' in which they could get on with their science.
It was more than just scientific interest that made a visit to the penguin colony imperative: on their grind to Cape Crozier, they had burned through nearly five of their six cans of oil.  As well as the penguin embryos they came for, they needed to burn some blubber to keep warm in their igloo, so that they could use the last tin of oil for the return journey.  So as soon as their building progress allowed, they scouted a perilous path down a snow drift over the cliffs and through the horrible pressure to reach the Emperor colony.  Instead of the two thousand birds found by the Discovery, there were barely a hundred, and less than half of them apparently had eggs.  Nevertheless, Wilson and Bowers secured five eggs and three birds' skins – the blubber comes off with the skin – and they legged it back to their camp while there was still a modicum of light to see by.  Cherry broke both of the eggs he was carrying in a fall, but they made it back with the remaining three and the blubber, which got its revenge on Wilson by spluttering into his eye from the stove.
“Things must improve,” said Bill [Wilson] next day, “I think we reached bed-rock last night.”  We hadn't, by a long way. [272]
Tumblr media
The igloo is at the opposite end of the moraine from the helicopter landing site, or at least where the GPS told us it was.  There is nothing between the crest of Igloo Spur and the Transantarctic Mountains, hundreds of miles away, and the 30-knot wind flowed over our minor obstruction just like a river: barely any gusts, just a constant flow, solid as water, up and over the ridge and then out towards the sea.  I tried to look out for lichen as I stumbled along, but it was hard to be careful of where I put my feet when I was struggling to keep my balance against the wind.  There were patches of a beige crust – was this lichen or was it a mineral deposit?  Someone shouted that they had found some – it turned out to be black, and crawled along the ground like dinosaur fern.  Once spotted it was obvious, and easier to avoid.
A few good minutes' scramble got us to the igloo.  On the way, I saw a small log of petrified wood, shining pale on the chocolate-brown rubble.  This seemed very much out of place on a volcanic island, and I wondered briefly how it had got there, before an answer came: obviously it had blown here.  A joke, perhaps, but not as much of one as you might think: the further out along the ridge we walked, the stronger the wind seemed to be.  At last we reached the remains of Oriana Hut.
I should have been humbled, or at least struck with a sense of awe.  But all I could think was: You guys were completely insane.
Tumblr media
The day after Wilson, Cherry, and Bowers returned from the raid on the Emperors, there was a small blizzard, and the flapping of the canvas roof on the igloo caused them some concern, so they set about weighing it down with blocks of ice and making extra sure it was securely fastened all around.  They pitched the tent right next to the door and put a lot of their gear into it, to make space for themselves in the igloo.  Then, with the weather calm and their bellies full, they settled down to catch up on some precious and hitherto scanty sleep.
I do not know what time it was when I woke up.  It was calm, with that absolute silence which can be so soothing or so terrible as circumstances dictate.  Then there came a sob of wind, and all was still again.  Ten minutes and it was blowing as though the world was having a fit of hysterics.  The earth was torn in pieces: the indescribable fury and roar of it all cannot be imagined.
“Bill, Bill, the tent has gone,” was the next I remember – from Bowers shouting at us again and again through the door.  …. Journey after journey Birdie and I fought our way across the few yards which had separated the tent from the igloo door.
… To get that gear in we fought against solid walls of black snow which flowed past us and tried to hurl us down the slope.  Once started nothing could have stopped us.  I saw Birdie [Bowers] knocked over once, but he clawed his way back just in time.  Having passed everything we could find in to Bill, we got back into the igloo, and started to collect things together, including our very dishevelled minds.[275-6]
Not sure when they would be able to eat again, they cooked a meal, and nervously watched the igloo roof.  The problem was not so much that it was in the wind, but that it was just out of it: the wind rushing up the southern slope of the moraine created suction just behind the crest, where the igloo was, and this was pulling the canvas up.  The motion of the canvas shifted the ice blocks weighing it down until they were off.  Then the incessant sucking up and flapping down started to stretch the material; as it stretched it got more play; as it played more the flapping became more violent.  At last the fabric could no longer take the strain and exploded into ribbons, whose frantic lashing in the hurricane sounded like pistol shots.
They hurried into their sleeping bags and rolled over so that the flaps were underneath, and huddled while the storm raged overhead.
I can well believe that neither of my companions gave up hope for an instant.  They must have been frightened, but they were never disturbed.  As for me I never had any hope at all; and when the roof went I felt that this was the end. [280]
And then … they slept.  The blizzard had brought a rise in temperature and the snow drifting over them made a good insulator, so they were more comfortable than they had been for a while, and of course there was nothing else they could do.  There was so much to worry about that there was not the least use in worrying: and we were so very tired. [282]  Occasionally Bowers would thump Wilson and Wilson would move a bit to prove he was alive.  When they were awake they'd sing songs and hymns to pass the time – we sang hymns because they were easier to sing than La Bohême and it was a good thing to sing something.*  Quieter moments might be spent cogitating over how to get back without a tent, but the situation looked pretty hopeless.  When they were thirsty they would pinch a little drift from just outside their bag and eat it, and so staved off the worst, but without a tent, 52 excruciating miles from the nearest shelter at Hut Point, and months away from spring, it seemed only to be delaying the inevitable.
Thus impiously I set out to die, making up my mind that I was not going to try and keep warm, that it might not take too long, and thinking I would try and get some morphia from the medical case if it got very bad.  Yes! comfortable, warm reader.  Men do not fear death, they fear the pain of dying. [281]
On top of everything, it was Wilson's 39th birthday.
Tumblr media
I suppose the most surprising thing is that there is anything left of the igloo at all.  Some of the rocks came down when the roof blew open, but the many, many blizzards since then have worked hard to dismantle the rest.  And yet, in the shelter of the walls, protected by the drift that accumulates there, there are still some of the Crozier party's possessions.
Standing here, especially in a 30-knot wind, one cannot but think this is a pretty stupid place to build a shelter.  Cherry acknowledges this in his book, but reminds us that they had to build more or less where the rocks were, and the rocks were where the wind kept the snow from accumulating.  They had brought a snow knife to cut snow blocks, Inuit-fashion, but there was no such snow to be had; it was all ice.  And I had an additional insight, thanks to my midnight hike up Arrival Heights:
Tumblr media
The igloo is built just off the crest of the ridge, exactly like where I was standing when I felt no wind on Arrival Heights.  They would have been very familiar with that ridgeline and had almost certainly observed the same phenomenon, so if they had to pick a spot on a desolate windswept hill, that was, in the circumstances, one of the better ones to pick.  There was a short blizzard their first night back from the Emperors, but aside from the drift blowing through the gaps in the rocks it didn't concern them much; they just had the bad timing to meet a monstrous storm shortly after. I have never heard or felt or seen a wind like this, Cherry wrote, even after having experienced the ferociously windy second winter at Cape Evans, where they feared the hut might blow down, I wondered why it did not carry away the earth. [283]  They had anticipated the wind in the construction of the hut, and the pyramid tent had amply proven its ability to stand up to blizzards in its years of Antarctic service; it was the suction that threw them a curve ball.  When the roof blew into ribbons, it was still firmly anchored in the walls, and even 108 years later, it's still there.
Tumblr media
The storm first hit on Friday, 21 July; by Monday it was beginning to abate enough that they could speak to each other without too much difficulty.  They hadn't eaten for two days, but the first thing they did was go look for the tent.  When that proved fruitless, they returned and cooked a meal with the tent floorcloth stretched between their heads.  The cooker was full of penguin feathers, burnt blubber, and dirt, but the smell of it was better than anything on earth.
When the midday twilight returned, they had another search for the tent.  I followed Bill down the slope.  We could find nothing.  But, as we searched, we heard a shout somewhere below and to the right. They slid down the snow slope and fetched up where Bowers had discovered the tent, which must have closed like an umbrella when sucked off its moorings, and, with so much less surface area, dropped out of the sky only a few hundred yards away.  Our lives had been taken away and given back to us.
We were so thankful we said nothing.
If the tent went again we were going with it.  We made our way back up the slope with it, carrying it solemnly and reverently, precious as though it were something not quite of the earth.  And we dug it in as tent was never dug in before ... [284-5]
Tumblr media
I have read Cherry's account of the Winter Journey several times, 'blind' as it were – in my head, Cape Crozier was a chaotic jumble of ice and rock with no shape I could deduce from the writing.  Unlike the landmarks of McMurdo Sound, and even the Beardmore to some extent, there were no historical photos of the theatre for this action; a few closeups of the igloo appear at the end of Mark Gatiss' 2007 docudrama, but they give no context in respect to the landscape.  This was why it was vitally important I stand there myself.  The moment I realised that ambition, I knew it was more valuable than I could ever have pitched in a grant proposal.  The tiered foothills of Mt Terror to the east, the back of the Knoll, the strip of blue sea visible from the igloo, the 'porcelain teacup' of the hollow between here and there, and most profoundly, how the igloo hangs off the edge of nowhere on this exposed finger of land.  In the midst of a blizzard, with howling drift on all sides as well as above and below, it would be a tiny mote of solidity suspended in the vast blank nothing.
My companions must have been a little confused by my behaviour.  I hardly took any photos of the igloo.  It was interesting, for sure, but the state it's in now would not help me much, to draw it how it was then.  I took a lot of photos of the surroundings, but on two sides it was blowing mist so that didn't take very long.  Mostly what I did was sit with my back against a sill of rock near the igloo and just stare and stare and stare.  I wanted to memorize everything – not just where things were, but the wind, the silvery gleam on the snow, the feeling of being utterly at the extremity of all things.  It's one thing to read Cherry's memories, and boggle at the experience; it's quite another to stand where they were made, and be able to measure your own experience against theirs.  Standing there in the light, I could see it dark. Their blizzard would have been blowing twice as hard as the wind that could have knocked me over.  Riding behind Cherry's eyes, memory viewed through the lens of grief and nostalgia, his companions fill the frame, so one does not get a proper sense of how extremely tiny they all were in this vast howling nothing.  And, of course, they had only themselves to get them home, not a waiting helicopter.
Tumblr media
We had another meal, and we wanted it; and as the good hoosh ran down into our feet and hands, and up into our cheeks and ears and brains, we discussed what we would do next.  Birdie was all for another go at the Emperor penguins.  Dear Birdie, he would never admit that he was beaten – I don't know that he ever really was! … There could really be no common-sense doubt: we had to go back … [285]  They packed what they could that night and got what sleep they could in their horrible icy bags.  The next morning it looked like it was going to start blizzing again; they loaded the camp onto one of the sledges and stashed  in a corner of the igloo what they didn't want or need to take back, along with the other sledge, and set off into a rising wind.  After only a mile or so the weather forced them to camp, and Birdie tied a line from the apex of the tent around the outside of his bag where he slept: if the tent went he was going too. [287]
The journey back was still cold, but only hauling one sledge, they made much better time.  The men were exhausted, however, and their equipment suffering from their ordeals, so it didn't afford as much comfort or protection as it had on the way out.  But they were on their way home, and justifiably confident of getting there.
Tumblr media
It was the helicopter that called time on my visit to Cape Crozier.  The anemometer had clocked 38 knots at one point and nothing looked likely to improve.  In the interest of fuel efficiency, the machine was a nimble fibreglass damselfly, not built to withstand this sort of onslaught, and our pilot was worried for his craft.  So my coordinator came and told me it was time to go.  The trek back was definitely windier than it had been when we arrived, and it felt longer, too, though that may have been because I had my head down, focusing on my footing, rather than looking at lichen and petrified wood.  We piled onto the waiting machine and with no undue delay were back in the air. One last wide loop around Igloo Spur, then we rode the wind seaward, and the igloo on the edge of nowhere vanished in the mist behind.
Tumblr media
It is extraordinary how often angels and fools do the same thing in this life, and I have never been able to settle which we were on this journey. [273]
I understand why they did what they did, and made the decisions they made in context, but I have not let go of that impression that they were completely insane.  I've done pretty crazy things for an abstract goal, and while sleep-deprived, so on one hand I hesitate to judge.  On the other, a tiny unrepresentative sample of the extremity they endured beggars belief that they didn't start the trek home the minute they'd got the eggs, if not a lot sooner.  Surely they noticed that it was horrible?
But who is the more foolish here?  They threw themselves into the worst Antarctica had to offer in pursuit of knowledge, which could only be acquired this way.  They may not have known how bad it was going to be, but they knew it would be pretty bad, and went anyway, because they determined it to be worthwhile.
We, on the other hand, were only there because they had been there.
Correction: I was there because they had been there.  The others would not have been there except for me.
So who is the bigger fool?

Luka, Benny Cousland, Asha Lavellan, and Vaati Adaar (clockwise from top left)
Some headcanons for the new OCs I’ve been making. Maybe I should do these for all my OCs?
Vaati Adaar (Dragon Age: Inquisition) - face claim Chris Evans, bottom left
Vaati was practically born into the Valo-Kas Mercenary Company, a Vashoth child of Tal-Vashoth parents Meraad and Isala. However, he was kidnapped at age five by Templars and imprisoned in the Circle of Magi in Kirkwall, known as the Gallows. At age fifteen, he was rescued and set free by Warden-Lieutenant Lissa Surana and former Templar Raleigh Samson.
Vaati had a hard time in Kirkwall. His left horn was permanently damaged when a Templar sawed it off and had a fellow apprentice cauterize it with a fireball - the apprentice was made Tranquil and Vaati was left with a jagged white stump where his horn used to be. As part of his proposal, Blackwall gifts Vaati with a magic silverite false horn that he wears always.
Vaati was raised by Shokrakar after he escaped the Gallows. He was eager to expand his powers beyond the Circle’s teachings - he has an analytical mind and quickly became Shokrakar’s assistant tactician and second-in-command.
Vaati wields a spear that he uses mainly as a staff, and a spiked greatshield for defense and sometimes offense. He is only twenty-three when he becomes the Inquisitor to protect young Tash Adaar.
Vaati used to be involved with Tash’s elder step-brother Arno and acts sort of as a big brother to the Herald. He and Tash work together to plan the way the Inquisition goes, although Vaati defers to Tash’s judgments for the most part.
Vaati is demisexual, and began being attracted to Blackwall after they spent many weeks talking in the stables and whittling toys for the kids in New Haven.
Vaati enjoys carving and making things with his hands. His greatest fear is Tranquility, and he still has nightmares about the Gallows, where he was threatened with it daily just for the crime of being a qunari.
Asha Lavellan (Dragon Age: Inquisition) - face claim Mallory Jansen, bottom right
Asha Lavellan was the First of Clan Lavellan, but she left in order to become a Watcher for the Arlathvhen, keeping an eye on the shemlen’s wars and movements and how they would affect the People.
She bears the vallaslin of Dirthamen, the God of Secrets. Asha is a competent assassin and mainly wields a pair of daggers. However she is a mage, so she uses these to channel magic.
Asha has spent years helping city elves flee oppressive conditions and make it to various clans. She is well known amongst the Dalish and a legend among city elves who call her the New Emerald Knight. Asha’s connections led her to become the Dalish Advisor to the Inquisition and work closely with the other advisors, the Herald, and the Inquisitor.
Solas’ apparent dislike of the People led her to greatly distrust him, even as he tried to find out more about the distinctly non-traditional Clan Lavellan, and she took over teaching Tash about the Dalish folklore and culture when he and Tash’s relationship crumbled. Solas offered to remove her vallaslin and she balked, avoiding him from then on.
Asha encountered Briala at Halamshiral and the two women fell hard in love, particularly after Asha helped Tash to keep Briala in power with a public truce, and then after she assassinated Celene once Corypheus was defeated, leaving Briala as the power behind the throne Gaspard occupied as a puppet Emperor.
Asha is a rift mage and has perfected a technique much like Calpernia’s ability to teleport. She also gives Briala an enchanted dagger as a token of their love.
After she and Briala marry, Briala wears a mask with the vallaslin of Falon’Din hidden inside it, to commemorate the bond between her and Asha as one of similar strength to that of the two gods.
Benny Cousland (Dragon Age: Origins) - face claim Pedro Pascal, top right
Benezio Alendro Cousland, Lord of Highever, is actually Josephine Montilyet’s cousin through marriage - his brother’s wife, Oriana, is Josephine’s cousin, but the Couslands originally came from Antiva and the two have several ancestors in common. Josephine gets a message to Benny to have him serve as Tash’s tutor in dealing with nobility.
Benny escaped the massacre at Castle Cousland with the sacrifice of Ser Gilmore, and came across the Hero of Ferelden’s party by chance as he was trying to reach Ostagar to find Fergus.
Benny is skilled in the diplomatic arts, as well as with the rapier, and he used both these talents to assist the Hero. He formed a close attachment to Zevran during this time - the two informally married after the Blight and traveled together, first to Amaranthine with the Warden’s party. He became known as the Dark Wolf there.
Benny and Zevran spend the intervening time between the end of Origins and the start of Inquisition fighting corrupt institutions and helping protect the disadvantaged. Around this time they both become Red Jennies. While Zevran does assassination work for Leliana, Benny becomes somewhat of a mentor to Sera, helping her organize the Red Jennies.
Zevran and Benny form a polyamorous relationship with Mysen of Denerim and his husband Alistair during Inquisition. The four eventually end up in Kirkwall, helping Varric, working to improve the orphanage Mysen and Alistair started, and occasionally going on missions for Divine Victoria or the Red Jennies.
Benny is mildly allergic to strawberries and will break out in hives if he eats one, although it will clear up quickly and he won’t be in danger of anaphylaxis.
Benny is technically next in line for the throne of Ferelden should Queen Anora have no heirs. He formally adopts Alistair and Mysen’s foundling children so they are Cousland heirs, and hires guards to protect the orphanage.
Luka (the Witcher - Netflix) - face claim Niall Horan, top left
Luka is a gold dragon in human form - he prefers his human form immensely and only ever shifts back to save someone’s life or flee quickly. His mother was killed by dragon hunters when he was still a hatchling, and he had barely come of age in human years when his father Villentretenmerth had to leave him behind.
In human form Luka can still breathe fire, and can cast limited spells when he sings. His singing voice can be bewitching if he isn’t careful. HIs full name is Luczaryth.
Luka has a bright and happy spirit and is surprisingly naive. He seeks to do good deeds and seek out joy for his long-lived existence.
Luka has repaired over many years an abandoned house in a forest on the Continent. Jaskier heard Luka’s singing from afar one day and came upon the fine house. He seduced the young dragon, and the two spent many weeks together, falling deeply in love. Jaskier invited Luka to join him on his journeys and the two often perform duets, although Luka will occasionally leave to make sure their house is safe.
When Luka meets Geralt, the Witcher reluctantly takes the young dragon under his wing (so to speak) to protect him. Luka and Jaskier experience a great attraction to Geralt and act on it.
The three maintain a polyamorous relationship. Although Geralt chases Jaskier off after meeting Luka’s father, they reunite and agree not to be parted in anger again.
Despite acting very submissive to the other two in public, Luka is the one to take charge in bed, with Geralt letting go of all control and Jaskier switching between roles as the mood takes them.
