Typography Tuesday
Portuguese designer Ivan Alves created the Wild Potato font for Nor267 design studio in Porto, Portugal. Although used to working digitally, the designers for this project got off their computer screens and approached their work in a different way, creating a typeface made from handcrafted potato stamps. After three days of cutting, drying, painting, stamping, and drying again, the alphabet was finally completed. Then all the letters were scanned and turned into the digital font known today as Wild Potato.
These images are from The Making of Artistic Typefaces by 50 international designers published in 2016 by SendPoints Publishing in Hong Kong.

aural auras or hasselback ack ack
it turns out i had a new to me type of migraine yesterday that the absence of the usual extreme light sensitivity obfuscated. today i just mostly feel wrung out and bruised at a cellular, experiencing difficulty walking a few hundred feet but otherwise functioning, level
the most intriguing symptom was what seems to have been an auditory aura, which i did not previously know was a thing, and only fully realized it was happening when it stopped. it felt-sounded-felt something like the whole universe humming dissonantly through my skull cracks, bypassing my ears directly into my brain. it's exciting to know that my brain still has some neat new tricks to pull out after all these years and i hope it never ever ever does it again

Since writing hotgw, I completely forgot what the fate of Olly in the show was. I completely forgot that they villanized this 13 year old boy by turning him into an angry, silent, and emotionless sociopath who was not effected negatively by committing murder to someone he looked up to like an older brother, and whom he saw return from the dead.
And then had JON SNOW OF ALL PEOPLE willingly choose to sentence him to death by hanging. And not at all consider he was a young, traumatized boy whose greif and confusion was manipulated by older superior officers in the Watch, to do something he clearly didn't understand the consequences of, and was clearly so conflicted he was crying when he did it. This boy whose story started with Ygritte callously murdering his father right beside him, before his family and village were slaughtered, and a Thenn tormented him by telling him how he was going to eat his mother and father with a knife to his throat:
Tumblr media
I'm not saying Olly should be plainly forgiven for what he did to Jon, but I think its obvious that in Jons absence when he went to Hardhome, Ser Alliser clearly organized this mutiny with other high ranking men, and to hurt Jon even more, manipulated Olly into helping by using his trauma against him.
I'd even argue Olly was forced into it, as the moment Ser Alliser brought this plan to him, Olly couldn't say no. Because if he did, Ser Alliser knew Olly would go to Jon as soon as he returned. Meaning Ser Alliser either directly threatened or indirectly implied a threat to make Olly get in on this plan.
And I am sure as hell saying thar Ser Alliser, Yarwick, and Marsh deserved to be hung as they were grown men in full control of their choices and actions. But I will go to the grave saying that the real Jon Snow would understand Olly's complications and never would've harmed, let alone executed a child.
Season 6 Olly was unfairly villanized to satisfy general audiences who hated him for helping to murder Jon, and season 6 Jon was unfairly characterized as someone who would not see the obvious manipulation of a traumatized child and unintentionally villanized by thus executing that same child just to satisfy those same general auidences who wanted Olly to pay.
tldr: my fic is 100% me redeeming Olly out of spite for the writers and auidence members who were way too over eager to see the death of a child

This isn't even half of the potato crop from the garden. And just like that I suddenly have a huge glut problem.
Am beginning to regret not planning this out better.....
This photo does illustrate the importance of the home vegetable grower though. About 60% of this crop would not meet commercial standards and would be thrown away. The home grower uses everything. Zero food miles, zero waste and maximum value from water inputs.

I don't have enough room for this in oimw but it's important to me that you know that when Joyce finds out that Steve is a Grimm it's in the middle of a v stressful situation so in her head that becomes Part of the Problem and she's trying to figure everything out and rambling out loud to Hopper about how fucked they all are
and eventually it becomes how worried she is about steve not for steve but about steve because she's always seen him as this angry kid and now he's got this power and he doesn't even have his parents to keep him in check and maybe it would be better if they were here even though steve seems kinda afraid of that but maybe that would be a good thing in the long run...
and she doesn't mean anything by it. steve isn't a bad person. probably. he's just an angry kid. the kind she used to be afraid of jonathan becoming. the kind of kid lonnie was. the kind that she's sure she has no ability to handle.
and hopper just kinda looks up from his cup of customary "we're all so fucked" tea and is just like hey. don't talk about my kid like that.
and joyce blinks and well. hop was kind of an angry kid too wasn't he. and moves on to the next problem.

Harissa Lentil Ragù With Herby Greek Cheese Mash
Ingredients
For the Harissa Lentil Ragù:
1 tbsp olive oil
1 onion, finely chopped
2 garlic cloves, minced
1 carrot, diced
1 celery stalk, diced
1 red bell pepper, diced
1 cup dried green or brown lentils, rinsed
1 can (14 oz) crushed tomatoes
2 tbsp tomato paste
2 tbsp harissa paste 🌶️
4 cups vegetable broth
1 tsp ground cumin
1 tsp smoked paprika
Salt and pepper, to taste
Fresh parsley, chopped (for garnish)
For the Herby Greek Cheese Mash:
2 lbs potatoes, peeled and chopped
1/2 cup Greek yogurt 🥣
1/2 cup feta cheese, crumbled
2 tbsp olive oil
2 tbsp fresh dill, chopped
2 tbsp fresh chives, chopped
Salt and pepper, to taste
Instructions
Prepare the Lentil Ragù:
Heat the olive oil in a large pot over medium heat. Add the chopped onion, and sauté until translucent, about 5 minutes.
Add the minced garlic, diced carrot, celery, and red bell pepper. Cook for another 5-7 minutes, until the vegetables begin to soften.
Stir in the lentils, crushed tomatoes, tomato paste, and harissa paste. Mix well to combine.
Pour in the vegetable broth and add the ground cumin and smoked paprika. Season with salt and pepper to taste.
Bring the mixture to a boil, then reduce the heat and let it simmer for about 30-35 minutes, or until the lentils are tender and the ragù has thickened.
Adjust seasoning if necessary. Keep warm on low heat while preparing the mash.
Prepare the Herby Greek Cheese Mash:
In a large pot, bring the chopped potatoes to a boil in salted water. Cook until tender, about 15-20 minutes.
Drain the potatoes and return them to the pot. Mash the potatoes until smooth.
Stir in the Greek yogurt, crumbled feta cheese, and olive oil. Mix until creamy.
Fold in the chopped dill and chives. Season with salt and pepper to taste.
Serve:
Spoon a generous portion of the Herby Greek Cheese Mash onto each plate.
Top with a hearty serving of the Harissa Lentil Ragù.
Garnish with fresh parsley.
Enjoy your delicious and comforting meal! 🍽️
Tips:
Adjust the amount of harissa paste according to your spice preference.
You can substitute Greek yogurt with a plant-based yogurt for a vegan version of the mash.
Add extra veggies to the ragù, like zucchini or mushrooms, for additional flavor and nutrition.

Happy Hannukah my friends! Our offerings yesterday were quite Christmas centric admittedly, but I felt it was only fair to put up something for our jewish friends as well.
The cafe has challah and latkes, lovingly provided by Linda and Merv, as well as coffee tea and a few chocolatey sweets for later

Hopefully all 8 days of celebrations go wonderfully for you, and know that you're always welcome here. Enjoy!

I planted far too many seed potatoes last season and have been struggling with a produce glut ever since. My freezer is well stocked with frozen mashed potato portions!
These little odd bods are the last of the great glut event. They are soft and were sprouting. They were a bugger to peel. But I hate food waste. So tonight they found their way into a potato and leek soup. Simple to make and delicious to eat.
For the first time in months I am now a household without potatoes.
Hooray!!!!!
