Count Dracula, sequestered away from society for his unconventional lifestyle.
Jonathan Harker, terrified of temptation.
Lucy Westenra, overflowing with the flush of life and love for all her suitors.

itching for good comparative literature posting between varney and dracula
You've come to the right place, my friend.
The Corn Will Never Ripen: Contrasting Themes of Fear, Knowledge, and Secret-Keeping in Dracula and Varney the Vampire
"It was the doubt as to the reality of the whole thing that knocked me over. I felt impotent, and in the dark, and distrustful. But, now that I know, I am not afraid, even of the Count."
-- Jonathan Harker, Dracula
"...but at all events one thing is evident, that the parson thought it good sound policy, and it was, to endeavour to nip the thing in the head, and by ascribing it to a dream, put it down as a subject of speculation in the place."
-- Varney the Vampire
(Spoilers ahead for both books)
Fear is a powerful force in Dracula. Count Dracula wields fear as a weapon, using it as an iron hammer to flatten the peasants who live in his shadow or a knife to twist in the hearts of his victims. He delights in terror and the suffering that comes from it, and uses fear as a tool to manipulate people and to turn them against one another. In Dracula, the antidote to fear is knowledge: Jonathan Harker is rejuvenated by Van Helsing's confirmation that his experiences were real, Van Helsing's study of folklore provides the key tools needed to defeat their vampiric foe, and Mina Harker's compilation of journals, articles, letters, and other documents detailing the nature and movements of the Count proves, ultimately, to be the crucial weapon in the fight against Dracula.
Fear, too, is a powerful force in Varney the Vampire. Sir Francis Varney also wields fear to his advantage; however, it quickly proves to be volatile beyond his control, and he finds himself repeatedly harried and pursued by the mobs his presence has whipped up. The fears of the populace are an engine of destruction that churns up everything in its path, desecrating corpses, burning buildings, and on one occasion even murdering a man on the suspicion that he might be a vampire. In Varney the Vampire, the proposed antidote to fear is ignorance, as knowledge of the truth only breeds and increases the destructive power of fear; however, try as they may, the protagonists almost never succeed in concealing the truth from the people who would hurt or be hurt by its knowledge. Flora and Clara do not believe the doctors who tell them their horrible experiences are a mere dream, Flora and George independently arrive at the idea of vampires despite attempts from the others to keep them in the dark, and ultimately no one is ever able to prevent the formation of the book's most formidable villain, The Mob.
Much ink has been spilled about the way that Dracula reflects the many anxieties of the Victorian era; and certainly, fear is omnipresent in its pages. Yet the novel Dracula is not afraid of the dark, placing a much greater focus on the power of love and kindness, the importance of communication, and ultimately the triumph of good over evil. From the compassion of Romanian peasants and Hungarian nuns to the strong bonds of friendship shared between the main cast, Dracula brims over with optimism and hope for humanity, despite the inescapable prejudices of the text.
By contrast, the outlook of Varney the Vampire is bleak. Futility is a recurring theme, from the cartoonish bumbling of the main characters to the tragic character of Varney himself, trapped in an endless cycle of death and undeath. The lesson of Varney is that it is the duty of the enlightened intellectual to shield the frail minds of his lessers from truths which are too horrible for them to bear. Confronted by evidence of vampires, the woman and the emotional man will succumb to horror and despair, while the uneducated peasantry will quickly exaggerate the truth by way of rumor and gossip, eventually turning to mindless and destructive mob violence. Clearly, neither of these things are desirable to Rymer's imagined intellectual; yet the message of the text, over and over again, is that protecting these "lesser minds" is a task doomed to failure. Try as you might, you cannot keep the vampire out of peoples' heads, and the intellectual man is doomed to have his reasoned arguments drowned out by the riotous outcries of the mob.
It is impossible to separate Varney the Vampire's views on fear and knowledge from the author's sexism and classism. While Bram Stoker hammers in the lesson to his protagonists that ignorance benefits no one with the climactic attack of October 3rd, James Malcolm Rymer strongly holds that knowledge of the truth ought to be the domain of educated men and no one else. Women must be kept in the dark. The poor and uneducated must be kept in the dark. Men who are too emotional, and thus feminine, must be kept in the dark. None but the most manly and educated intellectuals are equipped to handle the truth of vampires, even when that truth far more directly concerns the very people that are being excluded from knowledge of it. Lying and gaslighting are acceptable and even virtuous when put to this purpose.
Some of this patriarchal attitude is present in Dracula, especially as regards the treatment of Lucy and her mother, but Bram Stoker appears to be mostly against the concept, as his heroes pay dearly for it with Mina later. Though his handling of it falls rather short of 21st century standards, Stoker attempts to show the value in cooperation between people of all kinds. The Romanian peasants do all they can to protect Jonathan Harker from Dracula; the nuns in Budapest take him in and care for him; Van Helsing and Quincey, both (admittedly Western) foreigners, are essential members of the effort to defeat Dracula; Renfield has a heroic turn after being shown kindness by Mina, and dies fighting Dracula with his bare hands; Mina, a woman, leads the team and plays a crucial role in Dracula's defeat. Even with Victorian prejudice rearing its ugly head, often glaringly, throughout the text, the contrast between Stoker's worldview and Rymer's is stark.
As a final note, I'd like to compare the portrayal of gender and emotion in Dracula and Varney the Vampire. Emotion in the Victorian era, as I've alluded to elsewhere in this post, was gendered. More specifically, emotion was feminine. Men were expected to control their emotions; women, being seen as weaker, were not given the same expectations of stoicism, although it was still considered impolite for a woman to display strong emotions in public. (This is what the drawing room, actually a withdrawing room, was for.) With this in mind...
Wow, the characters in Dracula cry a lot. Jonathan cries in despair during his captivity, Arthur will cry on anyone's shoulder, Van Helsing has his King Laugh moment, and even the normally stoic Seward breaks down into his phonograph at one point. Fear and trauma are not belittled, and grief is allowed room to breathe. Alongside all this emotion, we see the strict gender roles of Victorian society broken down in other ways too. Jonathan takes comfort in femininity during his confinement in Castle Dracula, imagining himself in the position of medieval ladies writing letters and comparing himself to Scheherazade; later, he holds onto Mina's arm while they walk, the opposite of Victorian custom. Mina studies shorthand and practices her typing in anticipation of working alongside Jonathan, crossing the strict male/female division of Victorian society between the working and domestic spheres. Van Helsing describes her as having "a woman's heart and a man's brain", and after learning his lesson about patriarchal sexism and keeping secrets, follows her lead in the hunt for Dracula. Stoker yearns for a kinder and less regimented world than the one he lives in, and in Dracula he writes that world.
Rymer, on the other hand, fears the degradation of the regimented world, and writes in Varney a cautionary tale of the dangers of Too Much Emotion, demonstrated most starkly in the final vignette of his sprawling epic. When Clara Crofton is murdered by Varney, her father is deeply affected by grief at losing his daughter; and though other characters, chiefly Flagship Manly Intellectual Dr. North, attempt to chastise him out of expressing that grief, they ultimately fail and he is driven to madness. Clara's fiance, Ringwood, is also stricken by the loss. When he discovers Clara has risen as a vampire, he chases after her, begging to join her in undeath; but while this sentiment in Dracula is portrayed as the ultimate expression of love and devotion, in Varney it is portrayed as silly and irrational, and Ringwood, too, ultimately faces material consequences for his emotional outburst: he is attacked by Varney and knocked unconscious.
In Dracula, emotional connection and communication are embraced, and the bonds forged by this type of connection are instrumental to overcoming fear and defeating evil. In Varney the Vampire, grief is dangerous, love is foolish, and fear is a greater and more pervasive evil than any monster that lurks in the shadows.

Mina being forced out of the conversation with the Boys ONCE AGAIN
-breaks a window-
Mina being forced out of the conversation due to the fallout of the Boys' use of the exact same course of action that failed Lucy
-starts chucking furniture-
Mina being forced out of the conversation due to the fallout of the Boys' use of the exact same course of action that failed Lucy which both she and Jonathan were chafing against from the get-go with Jonathan outright wanting to place her out of Dracula's reach and on her own turf in guaranteed safety rather than stewing in the tower but both of them going along with Van Helsing's orders because He's the Leader~
-sets fire to the house-
Mina having to tell Jonathan to his face that he must promise not to tell her anything for fear of Dracula listening in, shutting a heartbreaking door between them... (and thereby, yes, saving Van Helsing and Jack the embarrassment of them having to realize, once again, they are not in fact the genius specialboys in the room)
-eats the sun-
Mina stopping short on her brief beat of optimism when she catches sight of her scar...
-rips the universe asunder-

Horror Movie of the day: Dracula (1931)
The 1897 Bram Stoker's novel, a well known literary classic: the nefarious vampire who comes from beyond the Carpathians to take over England by settling in Cairfax Abbey, London. A blood eating fiend who is drawn in by the virginal Mina Murray, to then be confronted by her fiancé Jonthan Harker and Dr. Abraham Van Helsing. So when Tod Browning was hired to adapt it to the silver screen, from its theatre adaptation nonetheless, the end result became transformative in the world of cinema… forever.
Now, it's easy for modern audiences to be desensitized to its lack of violence and campy theatrics, with a performance from Bela Lugosi as the count that has been parodied to death and then some. And yet, over 90 years after it was seen for the first time it's still considered as THE iconic interpretation of the vampire upon which Halloween costumes are based on and from which many lines not found in the novel are imitated. Why is that? The key word is charisma.
Behind the obvious camp, there's something performative if not outright uncanny about the count. Yes, a 6 feet tall vampire who is always staring and cups the sky in his hand like a poorly directed Shakespeare villain can come across as a tad goofy, but he thoroughly sticks out and it's hard to look everywhere else when someone acts so strangely and somehow makes everyone start following his pace, simultaneously a relic of the time yet still captivating, magnetic even.
A pragmatic adaptation that simplifies the story (cutting out Lucy Westenra's suitors entirely, cutting Jonathan's trip Trannsylvania out) this film keeps most of the essentials about the book while optimizing the screen time, while changing the angle to emphasize the rivalry between Dracula and Van Helsing. The end result is moody and atmospheric, with some admittedly hooky effects but hitting just right at many moments.
It's only natural for a movie still worth watching.
Yes, I emphasized Lugosi's performance during the main body of review, but that was honestly warranted: a movie named after its antagonist lives or dies by that performance specifically, and the classically trained Hungarian honestly knocked it out of the park to the point he codified what vampires look like for decades, only horror film legend Cristopher Lee ever coming remotely close to the same leve of iconicity. But reducing the movie's success to JUST Legosi's performance is undermining the effort of the rest of the cast, with Edward Van Sloan's performance as Abraham van Helsing playing a great foil to the count, or Dwight Frye's compelling range as Renfield really selling the madness and tragedy of his character.
But above all, Tod Browning's directorial achievements in what was effectively a new field.
Sure, horror films existed before this one, so did Dracula adaptations even. But this movie had a challenge past ones didn't have to deal with: making horror work with sound. An herculean task he understood better than some people might give him credit for; while archaic to modern eyes with it's nigh total absence of music (including the now awkward use of Tchaikovsky's Swan's Lake as the opening credits theme), finding things like the sound creaking doors used to build tension THIS early in cinema history isn't as self explanatory as it might seem. It required an intuition as to how the soundscape of a situation instinctively affects the emotional state of the viewer.
That isn't to mention that for how shoddy those bats on strings look, the atmosphere of the film still manages to hit the mark. Even fairly goofy facial expressions can be rendered creepy under the right lighting conditions.
But then, there's some other matters about this film, like how the changes to the book have affected the perception of many characters (hitting Mina the hardest by making her JUST the damsel in distress), the fact Lugosi was not the first choice for Dracula and had to fight for it(showing that even back then you had an internal politics conflict in Hollywood), or the existence of a score which was added in later releases and adds to the film's atmosphere.
...or the fact it's actually TWO separate films from from the same script.
As dubbing and putting subtitles to films wasn't a common practice during the 30's, to export this movie to other markets a completely separate version in a different language would have to be made for each. And since Mexico is the immediate neighboring country, a Spanish version was shot at nights on the same sets as the English one, helmed by George Melford.
The end result is a very similar yet also decidedly different movie, lasting over half an hour more, addressing plot points that are either glossed over or shortly talked about, and having more ambitious cinematography, but with acting that doesn't quite match the overall level seen in Brown's effort. Specially poor Carlos Villarias, who was mandated to imitate Lugosi as close as possible and wasn't allowed to make the character his own, remembered only as a pale imitation of the so called original.
Still, a window into two different takes from the same script is a rarity in the world of cinema and well worth looking into.

Tired of constantly having my feelings invalidated but of course hope none of those soft-hearted prigs will be able to find this post.
"Mrs. Westenra's good! Her daughter is still a child!!"
Her daughter is an adult, but let's skip past even that. Let's bring up something all y'all forgot.
What part of forcing your daughter's best friend to be a babysitter and confidant is that "good parenting" you guys keep hyping up?
Imagine you're over at a friend's house and your friend's mother pulls you aside and tells you that she's dying soon and you have to keep it secret. And this is weeks after pulling you aside and telling you that you're going to have to moderate her child's sleepwalking habits.
It's about patterns of shit behaviour, it's not even about the stupid fucking garlic at this point. It's about past and future events that doom Lucy and those around her to a worse quality of life. I don't give even half a damn if she means well. Abuse that is "well-meant" is still fucking abuse, and yes, emotional neglect is a form of abuse, forcing your daughter to walk on eggshells around you is abuse, and forcing another child to parent your daughter is abuse.
Van Helsing made his damn mistakes and he took responsibility for them. He gave his blood and sat up, he suffered through the grief of being so wrong and letting Lucy get hurt by his own hubris. When he's inadvertently fucked everything up, he puts the work in to make things right. He deserves to face the consequences of something that he's partially caused.
But what did Mina do to deserve all those sleepless nights? What did she do to deserve having to keep so many secrets when she was already hiding her grief at the notion that the love of her life could be fucking dead?
Mina cannot be that much older than Lucy. I don't care if Westenra needed an adult to talk to, she has a staff of servants she could confide in whose job it is to fret over her health. If she needs a fellow adult to speak to about things she's trying to keep from her daughter, her daughter's best friend who is of a similar age is NOT the optimal choice!!

Rødt Lys Terapi for Hårvekst: Naturlig Behandling for Sterkere Hår
Styrker Hårsekkene: Når hodebunnen utsettes for rødt lys, aktiveres stamceller rundt hårsekkene.
1. Hvor raskt kan jeg forvente resultater?Resultatene varierer, men mange opplever forbedring i hårvekst etter ca. 2–3 måneders regelmessig bruk.
Konklusjon: Rødt Lys Terapi for Naturlig Hårvekst

1. Naturlig Varme
Mina is the most likely to play (harmless but funny) pranks. Van Helsing also.
Prankster MOs of the Drac Attack Pack
Mina: So good at her polite mien and poker face that you can never tell when or where the prank is coming. Sometimes it's already happened and she can play so innocent you're left second-guessing. But no. She got you.
Van Helsing: Man loves a good prank. He is full of all the goofs and japes you could ask for. Jack is, of course, his favorite and easiest target. Though perhaps he went too far in briefly taking his fidget-lancet hostage and swapping it out with an ear of corn.
Quincey: Not a threat unless you try to get him first. Emphasis on the word 'try.' He strikes me as the kind of guy who can smell a prank coming--I picture him as part of a very big family with optimal sibling-based training--and always has a counter-prank prepared in advance. Arthur found this out the hard way. Jack was already in position with a Kodak for the payoff, recording The Incident* for posterity. (*The Incident is locked in a safe that no amount of money or dreamy puppy eyes has been able to bribe out. Sorry, Art.)
Arthur: Not the most extravagant of pranksters (see above), but is very good at quiet/covert pranks that are basically a waiting game. He does a Thing and then sets his watch to see how long it takes for the victim(s) to notice it's happened. Once got Lucy for a solid hour as she looked for a specific hair comb around her room, Arthur looking with her. When her back was turned, he took it from his pocket and quickly did up his own curls with it from behind. She didn't notice until he took a seat in front of her vanity with his back to the mirror.
Jack: Has never once succeeded in intentionally pranking anyone. Not counting himself when he spent the better part of an afternoon looking for the glasses that were on top of his head.
Jonathan: Pranks rarely if ever occur to him to play. But rarity doesn't mean never. That he could or would pull a prank is so alien a concept that no one bothers to consider him a suspect. Except Mina, who knows, but would never say. If only because half the time the prank was a couple's activity.
BONUS:
Dracula: "Hello, my good friend, Jonathan Harker ;) I hope you will enjoy the completely normal and very brief visit to my lovely castle ;) Which you will definitely get to leave as a living human being with all your blood and sanity where it should be ;)"
Dracula, two months of traumatizing his solicitor later: "Ha ha, got you"

I would also maybe add that the fact that Lucy got sick has an influence on Jack as well. Here we have Jack- who until this point was in deep depression mode, sure that no one could suffer as horribly as he does of a broken heart, even sort of abandoning empathy when working with his own patients- be shaken awake by the sudden illness of the one he constantly mentions as his love, and suddenly there is someone else who actually needs help because she is really suffering from a harsh malady. Sure, his patients need him as well, but towards Lucy he has an emotional attachment and that helps him to wake up out of his Morphine filled dream state. When Van Helsing arrives and begins to both praise and tease Jack, it reminds Seward of his student days, the days when he was full of optimism, the wish to help others, and further, have the talent to do so.
There is a different side to Jack Seward that gets unlocked once Van Helsing enters the story, and I think that speaks volumes on how deeply layered their relationship is. Not quite intertwined, but complementary to each other. It still endlessly fascinates me that before Van Helsing, Jack is an entirely different character to the reader.
Jack's appearance and personality is of one slowly unravelling, slowly becoming more unhinged. He cannot get over Lucy's rejection and instead uses Renfield as a distraction. He gets invited out with the boys but we don't hear him talk about it, it's almost as if another Jack Seward got invited. He talks about how vivisection was misunderstood and maniacly plans to let Renfield escape so he can study him further. The audience can feel he is spiraling though he does not want to admit it.
And yet when Lucy is sick, Jack does something unexpected - he asks for help. He reaches out to his old friend and mentor, and it softens him into a different person. When he writes to Arthur about Van Helsing, his arrogance about the hierarchy of man melt away into earnestly describing how incredible his former professor is. And in turn we see how quickly Van Helsing drops everything to go see him.
Not only that, it changes our perception of Jack as well! When Van Helsing teases Jack and confuses him with his vague statements, he's still so accepting. In the next few entries, we will see Jack's character diverge from being a brooding "mad doctor" type to being pathetically loveable. He becomes less sure of himself, yet somehow more vulnerable, more impartial, more sympathetic.
I cant get over it. These two doctors drive me mad, actually.

Oh if tonight's entry isn't another example of just how Dracula Daily switches up and occasionally heightens the horror of the original.
[Mild spoilers for whether or not there's entries in the following days, and their contents] In the original, there are added entries from other dates sandwiched in between today's entries. And don't get me wrong, it has its merits, and I think it works at building up the horror marvelousy. But whereas the original's is like a slow burn, a mystery being unraveled, Dracula Daily's doesn't hold back.
You are given Everything; Lucy starting the day strong, happy, hopeful. Wait, Van Helsing's in Amsterdam? Wings are at the window. Well, at least Seward's watching right? Right?
No. Dracula Daily doesn't give you any relief. It immediately hits you with Seward's POV, and the revelation that he isn't with Lucy is made chilling in a way not quite obvious in the novel (as now we are able to juxtapose Lucy's entry with Seward's immediately, rather than being distracted by something in between. The original has an entry interrupting these two). He can't get any relief either; he's attacked by Renfield. You remember then that Renfield and Dracula are in cahoots, and suspicion of whether this could be part of some plan arises.
And then the masterstroke; Van Helsing's telegram.
(Sent to Carfax, Sussex, as no county given; delivered late by twenty-two hours.)
"Delivered late by twenty-two hours." The novel has this follow Seward's entry with no interruptions, so Dracula Daily doesn't change anything here. But gosh. We've just spent the past few entries watching the characters fumble over a lack of communication, repeated lessons that it only takes one mistake, one lapse in understanding for their defenses to fail.
And the telegram is delivered late.
The original novel has another interruption here, with Seward writing in his diary about how he hopes nothing bad happened in his absence. We the readers know better, and the horrors described in Lucy's memorandum are so much worse for it.
Finally, Mina's letter. A jarring bit of optimism, and ironically one of the most tragic parts of tonight's entry so far.
"(Unopened by her)"
Might be reading too much into this, but "by her" hits so much harder than if it were just "Unopened". I like to imagine (the novel doesn't say this, its just personal speculation) the other characters opening this, reading Mina's cheery words and dropping deeper into misery. Poor Mina. Poor Lucy. We want to hope that they'll meet again. And we can only wait.

Jack and van Helsing creep into the cemetry once more, waiting out a funeral and allowing themselves to be locked in. Which is illegal, as Jack points out. They reopen Lucy's coffin, finding her inside this time as Jonathan once found Dracula during daytime, asleep but with no trace of rot on her, more beautiful than ever, teeth pointy, lips red and face with a cute I-had-a-good-drink-last-night blush. Van Helsing, stop fingering around in Lucy's mouth. That's both unhygienical and risky. Jack wants to argue against the vampire thesis, but can't quite grasp his arguments. Meanwhile, van Helsing explains what difference it made that Lucy died in trance - she's undead in trance, too, not even in these nights all that conscious of what she's doing. If I remember her sleepwalking correctly, that won't give her much peace of mind. Onward to solutions then; van Helsing wants to do what he should have done before her burial. Chop off her head, fill her mouth with garlic (blooms or bulbs?), stake her. Jack is way too horrified of undead Lucy now to really object. After all, this is not the woman he loved anymore.
Unfortunately, van Helsing thinks they should drag out the plot some! They should wait to tell Arthur. I mean, van Helsing took forever to tell anyone of anything, really, and so far he really didn't care to inform Arthur of what Lucy was up to postmortem, but eh, now that she's buried already and deserves peace and in the meantime endangers children? Let's just WAIT, I guess. And tell Arthur that the body of his fiancée needs to be mutilated to stop her from being a horror monster. This is so dumb. Why should some people here grieve in a wholesome way and still sleep well at night? I'm so fucking done with this. Also, he wants to stay alone in the cemetery that night. Clever. That doesn't sound like anything dangerous could happen. Probably not smooching Lucy, because we get a line of queer dreams again - for next night, van Helsing wants Jack and Arthur and Quincey to come to the hotel where he's staying. Uhm, yeah, well. That sounds like an orgy ahead. Until then, it's keeping watch and throwing garlic at Lucy if she wants to go for a walk. "She is young as Un-Dead, and will heed" - look at that optimism. Kinda hope is misplaced. Van Helsing is more worried about Dracula showing up though, fair enough. Just in case, he hands all Dracula-relevant papers over to Jack and bequeathes to him the job of vampire-killing. Wonder if Buffy is a descendant of Doc Seward.
