sisyphus moanin about that boulder when he doesn't even have to write a research essay with three strangers
#shitpost#wish me luck chat i haven't looked at it over the weekend#i did my parts like friday. and then accidentally did an extra part#everyone else has been filling in over the weekend#and now i'm going back through to see what our essay is actually about#(i did previous research. data. and data analysis. i don't know what conclusions they took from it)#but i also LOVE editing. so i just know i'm gonna wanna alter a whole bunch#but I cannot. because. group project. i have to let them do their parts#oh wait i forgot to post this this has just been sitting open as i look through the essay for like 15 minutes#it's. it's okay. so far it's a little janky but. we can work on that

this chem software is infuriatingly proprietary
I knew I was going to have to deal with this down the line because it was obvious this data wasn't being managed correctly; I hoped it was. but it wasn't, and now I'm opening each file and writing down metadata.
Pretty sure there's python code to do this metadata collection, and I'm a little annoyed I'm not better at coding to whip something up to circumvent the way this was organized. It's one of those things where it'd take longer to put the script together than just cranking through. Plus learning a new library is a pain. Ideally I won't have to repeat this process either; when I do it myself I'll know how to manage it.
#I think 90% of research is data management. I got lucky that I failed so much at my job as practice tbh >.>#Aside though: any software that doesn't export a raw data file to txt/csv should be taken out back.#I should investigate opening these with different kinds of software tbh. But I'd still need to do this process because the metadata#wouldn't be in a reference-able format for me to find the files I need...#/makes frustrated hand gestures#c'est la vie~#ptxt#alright break over lol

i've got to stop reading blog posts dissecting the causes of plane crashes but they're just so satisfying
#meticulously researched and cogently interpreted technical information that i only need to retain long enough to interpret the text#that im currently reading and can then let slip from my mind. w enough of a narrative and human element that it keeps my attention#and long enough that it feels like it takes meaningful time for me to read each one#absolutely everything i could want except that the subject matter is a list of all the different fuckups pilots and plane mechanics can hav#information which likely will not benefit me and my future emotional experiences.#box opener#now admittedly the ones before ~2006 are like ''and then a remarkably functional government agency made a series of strict recommend#ations based on the data‚ many of which were actually implemented‚ and no plane has ever crashed from wind-gusted elevators again''#which is. actually pretty reassuring. so maybe i just shouldn't read the recent ones about problems they havent fixed yet.

not me reading academic papers past midnight as if I'd find a solution in them for real life problems or at least some comfort?
#actually I've found an amazing paper and it really comforted me#I love... data#I love researchers making their work open-access#you know who I don't love? people using cut-off values way too carelessly

i have so much muse! and i've pretty much completed all my projects for the end of the year, so now my workday is mostly just doing research, sniffing around data sources, and managing the transition from development to production for some of these models. soooo, i will be around working on things during breaks, and i should also be around this evening after i grab dinner with some friends! 😌
#;; and okay even the dev to prod thing isn't much work?? it's just answering the occasional question and sending links to sources#;; the research is fun bc i get to run around and see what i may want to do next year with some of this data 👀👀#;; also i'm going to be 'working' around the holidays but no one is going to be around#;; so my boss is like 'just leave ur computer open and be freeee' 😭😭😭#♕░░ queen of the summer isles ( LUXX SPEAKING )#;; tbd.

You put so much research and detail into Incandescence of a Dying Light and it's amazing. Do you have any tips for someone trying to research for a story? One of my characters is an elderly Floridian lifeguard but the best sources I can find are some NYT articles about Long Island lifeguards
Oh thank you! I appreciate that.
As for researching, I think the best way to go about it is to try to research specific parts of your problem. You might not be able to find resources for an elderly Floridian lifeguard, but you can probably find resources for lifeguards, lifeguards in a particular area, and elderly people doing swimming/rescues. I can try to give you some pointers but without knowing your story or specific needs some of these tips might not work. Just use them as a jumping off point! Specific problems can be easier to research than broad problems--unless it's too specific, and then you lose all your results. Researching is a balancing act between those two.
Are they a lifeguard at the ocean, or a pool? If it's the ocean, where in Florida? I'd look up information about the sea currents in that area. That might give you an idea of the kind of risks your lifeguard is looking at, like if they work at a beach in a place known for rip currents or something. That will add some realism and you can probably find resources on what your lifeguard character is looking for. If it's a pool, your job is probably much easier because I have to assume most of the same rules apply for elsewhere.
Is there a specific time period you are looking at? I'm no lifeguard, so anyone can correct me if I'm wrong, but I imagine the profession hasn't changed very much in the past few decades or longer. If someone is a lifeguard in the 80s my gut feeling is that their job is still pretty similar to what it is today. So, that might make your research easier if you can expand the time periods you are looking at. My story is set in 1989 so I'm always looking for info from that time period. But most of what I'm doing is looking at fire lookout resources from the 50s or early 2000s, and then matching the technology in my fic to the late 80s.
I would also look up things like lifeguard handbook, lifeguard skills, lifeguard employee handbook, lifeguard training materials, etc. For example, just by looking up "florida lifeguard" I found the Jacksonville Beach Ocean Rescue Lifeguard Academy, which gives some details about the requirements and steps to become a lifeguard there. Could be useful information. I also found a 400 page Red Cross lifeguarding manual pdf. For more personal information, perhaps add stuff like "interview" to the search? I'm sure you would be able to find people talking about their jobs.
As for your character's age, that might not require much research. Being older does not mean a character can't be fit or strong (but I don't know if you mean 60 or 90 when you say "elderly" and that matters.) You could explore sources about active elderly people too, if you wanted. This will just depend on the details of your character though.
I would also recommend using some advanced search techniques. For example, if you only want examples about Florida, write it as "florida" with the quotes around it, and you'll only receive pages that contain the word Florida. Or, if you want to exclude something that is muddying your search results, put the word with a minus. Tragically at one point during my chapter 8 research i had to add -maui to the search to try and exclude news articles associated with it.
Generally though I would just look for lots of sources of many types, and then add them together. It is unlikely you will find sources that match everything you need. Break down what you need to know into smaller pieces. I may have 20+ tabs open for information that amounts to....a few paragraphs. Vary your search queries a lot, try different key words. My research for Firewatch AU has been helped by the fact that the job involves the federal government, which is great at recordkeeping and often has a lot of publicly available information. Your mileage may vary with other subjects. Watch your sources for accuracy. Or, if you rely on sources from a different location (Long Island vs Florida) be prepared to try and identify and fill in the gaps where there are differences between the locations.
Good luck!
#quara asks#idk if i've explained the process very well but this is a lot of how i break down stuff#i just spend ages poking around#it helps that i really do enjoy the process#i like searching and breaking down information to try and find what i need and it's so fun when you finally get good relevant info#anyway i have 29 tabs open to firewatch au research right now on my computer#about 9 of them are relevant to next chapter. several of the others will be relevant to chapter after next and some are leftover from 8#and some i just keep open all the time anyway (climate data or calendar of 1989 or the game's map)

i thought hisuian pokemon like. went extinct or at least evolved into the present forms we know today but i guess Not bc theyre still runnin around & no ones batting an eye. so im guessing they all migrated to places where those forms would survive over time. like ik the meta reason is for marketing & whatever but i care abt Lore
ALSO since we have paradox forms, some pokemon now have canon ancestors & id love to see a game that takes place in that specific era where we can actually learn abt them !!! all the entries in scvi are just "looks like smth from a book lol" which is So disappointing... i wanna know how they differ from present day pokemon & why they evolved the ways they did
i want more games with unusual settings!! send me way back in the past! send me far into the future! send me to space!! i wanna see for myself how the relationships between humans & pokemon developed! its pretty likely that theyve been working together way before pokeballs were ever a concept, but thatd be difficult for a game to do considering it breaks the formula too much.. but imagine some kind of taming mechanic,, legends arceus mixed with safari zone, having to learn each pokemons temperaments & favorite foods until you can get close enough to put some kinda collar on em & by then theyll trust you enough to go along with it... basically like rdr2s horse taming system iirc
#imagine another past/future themed game but ur actually going back n forth into the time periods to study pokemon#its too dangerous to leave the portals open so they have to send someone thru to gather data & live specimens#ofc you wouldnt be some random kid this time youd be like a qualified researcher#also i wanna go into ultra space. theres a whole nother universe of pokemon in there. untapped potential#idc if were like an astronaut or if were a kid From ultra space i want to go to there#torch chatter#pokemon#ramble

"China’s carbon emissions have flatlined over the past six months and there’s now an opportunity for substantial declines over the next decade, analysts say.
The rapid growth in clean energy generation has been sufficient to offset a recent surge in power demand caused by higher air conditioning use amid late-summer heatwaves, and the government’s manufacturing push, according to an analysis by Lauri Myllyvirta of the Centre for Research on Energy and Clean Air (CREA).
China’s carbon emissions fell by 1% in the second quarter of 2024 and were flat in the third quarter, providing another indication that emissions may have already peaked.
This is largely because solar power output was up 44% in the three months to end-September, compared to a year before, while wind power generation grew 24%. In the first nine months of 2024, China installed 161GW of new solar capacity and 39GW of wind, per CREA data.
For emissions to post a decline in 2024 as a whole, there will need to be a 2% reduction in the fourth quarter, Myllyvirta’s calculations show. That’s probable if power demand growth cools as expected and hydro plants perform in line with historical averages, he wrote in a post on X, adding that over the entire summer period, clean energy expansion covered all electricity demand growth.
“If the current downturn in China’s emissions is sustained — with emissions falling in the second quarter and stable in the third quarter — that would open the door to the country beginning to reduce emissions much faster than its current commitments require.
“This would have enormous significance for the global effort to avoid catastrophic climate change, as China’s emissions growth has been the dominant factor pushing global emissions up for the past eight years since the signing of the Paris climate agreement.”
Based on current trends and targets, CREA expects China’s emissions will decline 30% by 2035. The International Energy Agency says emissions will fall 24% by then based only on stated policies, but that could be raised to 45% if the country follows a pathway that’s consistent with its long-term carbon neutrality target.
For the time being, Chinese policymakers are setting relatively unambitious targets, and “it’s vital that future targets reflect ongoing clean energy trends to avoid locking in lower ambitions,” Myllyvirta said."

Analysis of data from dozens of foraging societies around the world shows that women hunt in at least 79% of these societies, opposing the widespread belief that men exclusively hunt and women exclusively gather. Abigail Anderson of Seattle Pacific University, US, and colleagues presented these findings in the open-access journal PLOS ONE on June 28, 2023. A common belief holds that, among foraging populations, men have typically hunted animals while women gathered plant products for food. However, mounting archaeological evidence from across human history and prehistory is challenging this paradigm; for instance, women in many societies have been found buried alongside big-game hunting tools. Some researchers have suggested that women's role as hunters was confined to the past, with more recent foraging societies following the paradigm of men as hunters and women as gatherers. To investigate that possibility, Anderson and colleagues analyzed data from the past 100 years on 63 foraging societies around the world, including societies in North and South America, Africa, Australia, Asia, and the Oceanic region. They found that women hunt in 79% of the analyzed societies, regardless of their status as mothers. More than 70% of female hunting appears to be intentional—as opposed to opportunistic killing of animals encountered while performing other activities, and intentional hunting by women appears to target game of all sizes, most often large game. The analysis also revealed that women are actively involved in teaching hunting practices and that they often employ a greater variety of weapon choice and hunting strategies than men.
These findings suggest that, in many foraging societies, women are skilled hunters and play an instrumental role in the practice, adding to the evidence opposing long-held perceptions about gender roles in foraging societies. The authors note that these stereotypes have influenced previous archaeological studies, with, for instance, some researchers reluctant to interpret objects buried with women as hunting tools. They call for reevaluation of such evidence and caution against misapplying the idea of men as hunters and women as gatherers in future research. The authors add, "Evidence from around the world shows that women participate in subsistence hunting in the majority of cultures."
