Now sitting as an independent after being removed from the Ontario NDP caucus, MPP Sarah Jama — the voice of Hamilton Centre — is effectively silenced at Queen’s Park over statements she made on the Israel-Hamas war.
But where does that leave residents of her riding?
In an email to her constituents Tuesday evening, Jama reaffirmed her commitment to residents saying the censure “doesn’t mean I cannot advocate around issues important to Hamilton Centre.”
Full article
For the record, she was removed from the Ontario NDP over a tweet calling for a ceasefire in Palestine in which she recognized Israel and Canada as colonial states. That's all she did, and now she's been booted from the NDP and formally censured by the Ontario government.

Great history of Bob Rae and the NDP in power in Ontario in the early 1990s. My parents still feel betrayed all these decades later. "Deficit mania In its first two years of power, the NDP had brought in important labour law changes, raised the minimum wage, raised welfare rates, invested in housing, and raised taxes on higher income earners.
At the same time, the government was laying the groundwork for severe austerity. In January 1992, Rae took to television to tell Ontarians there were unsustainable deficits ahead and action needed to be taken. The NDP’s main focus was to get the deficit under control.
Either the NDP was going to push forward real substantive changes to how the economy works and for whom, or it was going to appease the economic forces in power. Rather than take on the big business agenda head-on, the NDP in government was pulled into managing the economy. And, first and foremost, this meant placating business interests and creating a stable climate for investment and business.
It should be noted that much of the hew and cry about the deficit and impending debt wall was baseless. The government claimed that the deficit would be $18 billion by 1995, an over-the-top projection. The real figure was almost half of that. Ontario still had access to financial markets; there was little concern about its long run debt to GDP ratio.
The NDP was viciously attacked by the rightwing and under siege from the big business lobby but there is little to suggest that Ontario was facing an actual fiscal crisis. The net debt-to-GDP ratio under the Rae government was lower than any subsequent government in Ontario.
To get the deficit under control, the NDP opted to not go after the rich and powerful. Both a wealth tax and an inheritance tax were dismissed early on. The NDP was also not going to substantially raise corporate taxes. The government was more comfortable bailing out corporations, opening casinos, and doing big pharmaceutical companies favours, at the taxpayers’ expense.' - David Bush, "Rae Days: Lessons from the Social Contract 30 years later." It is edited to show the Ontario NDP logo at the start, with text "Project Official Opposition." Shinji and other characters appearing have been replaced by NDP leader Marit Stiles and Conservative leader Doug Ford, with occasional headlines about the Ford government, including: "Developers who bought Ontario Greenbelt land linked to Ford government," "Ford PCs took 60K from donors linked to company pushing giant gravel mine." Other faces of politicians flash on the screen. Scenes of Shinji's life are replaced by videos of both NDP and PC politicians, with more headlines reading:
Ontario NDP leader joins striking Windsor Salt workers on picket line.
Ontario NDP leader Marit Stiles seeking help for family doctors during Kingston visit.
Ontario NDP leader lends support to Bradford's striking library workers.
Developer guests at Doug Ford family wedding got fast-track zoning approvals from government
Ford-friendly developers influenced Greenbelt changes, says auditor general
Issues related to the Ford government flash on the screen in the NGE title card font over black background cut with scenes of politicians and various protests, including Healthcare privatization, Greenbelt, Ontario Place, Housing Crisis, Insiders, Groceries, Public Schools, Labour, ODSP, Universal Pharmacare, and 2SLGBTQ+ Rights.

So like, I studied Political Science at university and haven't totally tuned out the sad and depressing global march to the right, and still I just. How, like HOW. If we had to come up with the worst, most absurd cartoon villain conservative candidate as a class exercise, I don't think we'd have been able to go this far and keep things remotely realistic. Let alone give them a fair shot of winning.

Ontario New Democrats are accusing the government of arrogance, hubris, and disdain for women after Progressive Conservatives shut down a debate set to take place tomorrow on a bill aimed at improving transparency around sexual assault cases. The private member's bill from Waterloo MPP Catherine Fife was to be debated Wednesday afternoon, with more than a hundred survivors and advocates expected in attendance at Queen’s Park in Toronto. In a move that blindsided the opposition, PCs voted Tuesday to send 'Lydia's Law(opens in a new tab)' to committee without debate. NDP MPPs shouted "shame" and "cowards" as government MPPs stood to vote. "It's shocking actually that they would have such disdain for women," Fife told reporters through tears.

"ACTIVE AT C.C.F. CONVENTION," Toronto Star. April 16, 1934. Page 3. --- The threatened casting out of Communists was completed Saturday evening with the adoption of a new constitution and the election of officers at the Ontario C.C.F. convention at the King Edward. Three leaders from near and far are here depicted by Eric Gibbs, Star caricaturist, as they repulsed verbal onslaught of the radical elements. Thomas Cruden (LEFT), leading Toronto C.C.F. member, who supported E. J. Garland. Bow River, M.P. (CENTRE), in beating back the insurgents. Angus McInnis, Vancouver M.P. (RIGHT), was chairman.
"BIRD, FACING FIRE THREAT, WON'T LEAVE EGGS," Toronto Star. April 16, 1934. Page 3. --- Mother love in the heart of a canary proved stronger than fear caused by the din and turmoil of a fire at 703 Yonge St. early yesterday. With firemen tearing around, fighting the flames, the little mother-to-be remained on her eggs in the nest. Even when a fireman carried her cage downstairs through dense smoke she refused to budge. The lower picture shows the feathered heroine still at the post of duty after the fire. Above are seen, at the left, Walter Abel of Hamilton, who was visiting Harvey Adams at the time of the blaze. Both men escaped down ladders erected by firemen. Mrs. the O. M. Kennedy. CENTRE, owner of the canaries, gave after she had been awakened by smoke alarm on the second floor.

Let their racism kill them.
Even after suffering flood damage, homeowners in mostly white communities prefer to accept higher risk of disaster repeating itself than relocate to areas with more racial diversity and less flood risk, according to new research from Rice University. James Elliott , professor and chair of sociology, and Jay Wang, a senior spatial analyst at Rice's Kinder Institute for Urban Research, are the authors of "Managed retreat: a nationwide study of the local, racially segmented resettlement of homeowners from rising flood risks," published today in Environmental Research Letters. To conduct their research, they tracked where nearly 10,000 Americans sold their flood-prone homes and moved through the Federal Emergency Management Agency's Hazard Mitigation Grant Program—the largest managed retreat program in the country—between 1990 and 2017. The data included address-to-address residential relocation information, flood risks of different addresses, community-level racial and ethnic composition, average housing values and more. "We found that across the U.S., the best predictor of the risk level at which homeowners voluntarily retreat is not whether they live in a coastal or inland area, or whether they live in a big city or a small town," Elliott said. "It is the racial composition of their immediate neighborhood."

Ontario NDP Leader Marit Stiles is promising to escalate her party’s attempts to overturn a ban on wearing the keffiyeh inside Queen’s Park when legislators return at the beginning of May. In a video posted to social media, Stiles said that if Ontario Premier Doug Ford did not push to overturn a ban on the Arab headdress, she and her entire caucus would defy the rules. Speaker Ted Arnott banned the keffiyeh, a black and white checkered scarf typically worn in Arab cultures and often used to symbolize solidarity with Palestinians, this spring. Arnott decided it was a “political statement” and therefore violated the strict rules that stop MPPs from using props or clothing to send a message while sitting inside the house.
