Liebeskind 2005 (f/d) (submission)

Hey Shipcestuous. ShipCestFan here. Didn’t see LIebeskind on your master list, so thought I would mention it in case you want to post on blog and add to lists.

The terrific German actor, Anna Fischer, plays 17-year old Alma Schone, who decides to confront her 40-something, physician father who had left her and her mother when Alma was twelve. Now back in town from being a traveling physician all over the world, Dr. Fred Schone agrees to see his daughter in his office. The meeting starts out tense but ends warmly with the two deciding to continue to see each other.

Father and daughter begin spending time together, catching up on the last five years. And in the process, both realize a growing attraction to each other. Anna begins to discreetly flirt and tease her father, and although he seems reluctant to respond, he also doesn’t stop it. In almost every scene, the flirting and teasing grows, with father and daughter playing a bit of a cat-n-mouse game.

Fred invites his daughter over to his place, and Alma makes her move. She kisses her father, but his reaction is not that which she had hoped. Tension builds between father and daughter through the rest of the film, particularly when Anna’s mother tells her that her father is a player. And that tension between father and daughter finally comes to a head when Anna finds herself back at her father’s place – just the two of them again – and this time, he admits his feelings but also tells her that he is leaving to go abroad once more. Where do the father and daughter go from here?

I couldn’t help feel like this 2005 movie was perhaps a semi-autobiographical account of the director’s life. Wikipedia indicates that the film was the director’s final project in film school, so it makes you wonder if the film is near and dear to her? The film has a very intimate and personal feel to it and I felt like I was a third-wheel sitting with father and daughter, observing all of their intimate moments. The acting is top-notch, and the viewer can feel the emotions cursing through, both, father and daughter. Both actors are Masters at expressing their thoughts and feelings with simple expressions.

I felt like the subtitled dialogue on the version I watched (a long time ago) was a bit choppy and discombobulated. Maybe some of the tender moments got lost in translation. But overall, I was very glad to have found and watched this film. The cestship is evident from the beginning and only gets stronger throughout the film. I don’t see it streaming on any major services at the moment but I’m certain I watched it online at some point so if one looks hard enough, they can find it.

My final thought on the film is this: In a separate post I made a while back, I stated that when men want to make a movie about cestship, they make porn. When women want to make a movie about a cestship, it’s often a deeply emotional film that is densely layered but often satisfying. This is one such film and I applaud the Director, Jeanette Wagner, for pushing boundaries and creating a fine film in the process.

he’s rich, but doesn’t like bragging about it. he has a big house, a very nice car but tends to live very simply, spoiling himself just for particular occasions. that can’t be said for his so, who he likes spending money on. like, they would be so embarrassed because they would feel like using him, while he’s like that meme that goes «i like seeing women spending my money». after a while he just decides to not going through the same process of «you really don’t have to» and starts to buy things and then make them appear between his lover’s properties. he loves buying them clothing he thinks they would look good into.

he’s jealous af. he doesn’t throw jealousy fits in public, but when he feels someone is trying to get too close to his so (like someone getting flirty in public), he would magically appear near them, slipping his hand around their waist and kissing their head. and if he feels like they’re getting closer than he likes to someone, he would probably just go berserk on them, throwing them on the bed and reminding them whose person they are property of.

with jealousy it comes also possession. he loves to show everyone that they are his. so in public he would probably always have his arm around their waist or his hand on their knee.

he’s a dom. also a pretty kinky one. despite not disliking sweet and tender sex, he like an animalistic one more. he has many kinks (breeding, cnc, dacryphilia, bondage and i could go on for hours) and likes experimenting. but he’s also very attentive to his lover, makes sure they have a safe word for anything (also non-verbal ones) and that they are always having a good time. his after care is very simple, but he makes sure his lover is cleared and that they know it was all an act. he likes submission, but also like people who rebel: he’s definitely a brat tamer.

What We're Looking For

Thank you for your submissions so far! They have made a few people very happy. We’re excited to share them with you, and until then, want to put names-to-faces, so to speak, following our invitation to submit. The hope is that this post helps you imagine more things to submit.

1. Letters of any type

Before Spare Rib and the rest, the early women’s liberation movement had open-access newsletters. Any woman could write in, regardless of her tone, form or education, and publicise an opinion, event, or respond to other letters.

WBM accepts letters of any form or tone. They may be previously published online or elsewhere. We won’t publish every letter, but it will likely be printed if it says something interesting, powerful, or for the first time. 

Letters are not eligible for payment, but the most interesting letter of the issue will receive a prize. 

Letters may contain opinions, thoughts, concerns, anecdotes, anecdata, folk healthcare knowledge, congratulations and praise for actions and activism, announcements, including announcements of events or groups, correspondence to the agony aunt (yes really), or short reviews of books and other media of transfeminist interest. 

There is no word limit per se, but we anticipate letters between 100 and 1000 words.

2. Essays

Two essays we have accepted for publication thus far, to give you some idea of what we’re looking for, have included: 

Transfeminist domesticities

In this essay, the author reapproaches feminist questions regarding the household with the trans woman in mind. She asks, among other things, How can we resist the spinster/bachelorisation of trans women? How can we live in greater community and solidarity with other trans women in the world as it stands? What is the role of the household in a transfeminist movement, and What would it mean to live as a household of one?

Towards a Transfeminist sex negativity

In this annotated dialogue, the authors recontextualise narratives of sexuality in the lives of transgender women. Drawing on recent writing by transgender women and personal experiences, they ask how we can better serve transgender women at risk.

Other essays to look forward to include topics such as notes towards a transfeminist dictionary, new networks of power and the British state, and decolonial transfeminisms. 

3. Methods

If you are doing transfeminist community work or similar, we would love to hear how. For example, the forthcoming issue will include a method on transfeminist consciousness-raising practices from activists in Scotland. 

We will include in the first issue any methods we have used towards the aim of low-cost, community publishing. 

4. Creative writing

We have described WBM as a new journal of letters on the subject of transmisogyny and transfeminism. However, do not read this in a strictly traditional, non-fiction sense. Creative writing is welcomed. The invitation to submit was very essay-forward, so this is underlined here. 

We will publish work by transgender women (&similar) and of transfeminist interest in which we can see critical, novel or well-refined approaches, literary merit, the development of the writer’s practice, and craftfulness. 

Additionally, we want to publish creative writing which is unlikely to be well-received by invitations to submit targeted at trans or queer writers due to its critical nature of trans and queer (and indeed trans female) writing or people. A published example of a text like this would be Amy Marvin’s enjambment bonanza poem Hey Guys, which draws a heavy line between myopic trans space organisers and the empire which enables their soft-and-tender politics. 

5. Relevant scholarly work of any sort

A woman is a good thing to be. We can say this without qualification. A woman is a good thing to become, as a statement too, requires no qualification. You would be hard-pressed, however, to find scholarly work which supposes it can speak for the lives of transgender women in which these are core premises.

WBM exists because trans female lives and subjectivities in their own right are worthwhile sites of thought and worthwhile origins for study. Women’s studies birthed feminist work in every field of study. When we are asking questions like Is there a transfeminine way of looking? or Do we have obligations against transing history? you are being asked to consider trans female life, transfeminism, and trans female subjectivities as fruitful and worthy of attention and defence.

Send us things that wouldn’t make it elsewhere, that would be butchered by most editors, yes. But also ask what an unflinchingly transfeminist response to some of the questions (or lack thereof) in your field of study is.

We have used the names magazine and journal interchangeably to indicate that we welcome academic work, but that we have no obligations to the academy, and intend to publish very readable work. WBM exists because we believe in an anti-institutional, decolonial transfeminism and its potential for a similar ’trans female studies.’ We must be always agents of our obligations against the university as the site of the production of whiteness.

6. Translations

If you are an able translator and want to share an extract of a transfeminist text not written in English, then let’s talk. We would be more than willing to do the leg work of writing to authors and publishers and obtaining the permissions. Similarly, book report-style essays on non-English language books are also welcomed. (What’s Pauline Clochec up to these days?)

7. Other forms

An annotated dialogue really isn’t an essay. If you have writing of any form not listed above, do consider submitting it. Form is no barrier, and we left the first part of the invitation to submit silent on a number of formal questions specifically to invite form-bending. 

There are no strict word limits to any form above and will approach each text individually. 

The deadline to receive first drafts remains the 31st of December, 2024, and all submissions received after this will be deferred until the next issue. Submitters are encouraged to (and will be loved and thanked greatly by editors if they) get submissions in early; the hard deadline for final drafts is not long after the final submission deadline of the 31st of December.

Remember that the use of pseudonyms is possible if desired. Submissions may be sent by email (editor snailsymbol badly dot press).

What could the pastel-coated aestheticization of violence on social media, the Israeli army, and anime fandoms possibly have in common? For centuries, Western art and media have used aesthetic devices to present horrific realities through a beautifying glass. With the widespread use of digital media, this practice has entered the virtual sphere, where memes—often verbally aggressive or cynical—are translated into tender and cute aesthetics, pastel colors, and lovely characters like Mimmy or Charmmy Kitty, adorned with hearts and ribbons and marked by pretty fonts. Some gifs or graphics are turned into purchasable pins and socks displaying messages such as “Please Die” framed in a pink heart or the meme “We are going to beat you to death” surrounded by plushies. Suddenly, what first appeared to be rude and corrosive now seems incredibly sweet and mild.

At first glance, I dismissed the memes as insignificant and harmless, but as I delved deeper, I discovered a whole ecosystem of microcultures and living digital fauna. Exploring this pink world, “cuteness” became my guiding light, leading me to discover hidden secrets—the dark underbelly of the “happycore aesthetic” that is far from its positive image of a wholesome, safe space: the unsettling, triggering “traumacore.”

Kawaii

The Japanese Kawaii culture—based on the term “Kawaii” which means “cute” or “adorable”—originated in Japan during the 1970s primarily through the use of low-cost stationery goods and childlike handwriting, and it quickly became popular among students as a means of self-expression. Author Kumiko Sato in her book “From Hello Kitty to Cod Roe Kewpie: A Postwar Cultural History of Cuteness in Japan” argues that cuteness emerged as a response to the rigid and hierarchical society of post-World War II Japan. As political and social awareness began to shift in the 1960s and 1970s, mass media and the commodification of goods began to dominate and shape lifestyles, leading to an irreversible phenomenon of consumerism that impacted people’s mindsets, habits, and lifestyles.

In 1974, Sanrio, a company specializing in character creation and marketing, was founded in Japan, and its most recognizable character Hello Kitty made her debut on a vinyl coin purse. Ackar raised a brow ridge noticing something different now with his head more clear now. "Did you get shorter?" He asked the Great Spirit.

Mata Nui shrugged his shoulders a bit, "I heard that the, I think the term that was used was called 'submissive' in a relationship," Ackar bit his tongue to not burst out in a belly laugh at that, "are mainly the shorter partner so I thought when reforming my body to make myself a little shorter than you." Mata Nui explained to the veteran Glatorian.

"And before you ask I heard that from unintentionally eavesdropping on a random conversation between the Ignika and Matoro." Mata Nui quickly added making Ackar let out a small chuckle.

Ackar shook his head while still chuckling a bit, "I mean, yeah but I could care less about your height." He told Mata Nui who had a slight pink blush underneath his Kanoi.

Mata Nui's blue eyes drifted to the side, "G-Good to know." He stuttered slightly while avoiding eye contact with Ackar.

Ackar smiled softly as he pulled Mata Nui close to his chest. "Well at least with us being alone now, I can do this without anyone watching to interrupt us." The veteran Glatorian said.

Mata Nui raised a brow at that before Ackar brought his face closer to his. Immediately his once slight pink blush turned as the red on Ackar's armor and Tahu's Kanoi Hau.

Ackar chuckled a bit at the sight before he rested his forehead against Mata Nui's who relaxed a bit and closed his eyes at the tender affection. "I missed you, so much." Ackar spoke quietly in a gentle whisper. "I'm glad because at least that means I can still do this." Mata Nui said as he pressed his lips against Ackar's which the said veteran Glatorian kissed him back immediately while bringing a hand to cradle the side of Mata Nui's face.

Hello! It’s been a long time! I’m so happy to see you’re still posting. I didn’t see it in any tags, so you might already be aware of it, but I just wanted to drop a note for a little dutch short film from 2017 called Femme, directed by Emma Branderhorst. As soon as I watched it, I thought about you and wanted to share.

It’s about a young boy Teun, on a camping trip with his family, and you can immediately tell he’s going through a lot of confusing thoughts, especially towards his older sister Roos.

Lots of small, quiet, tender and awkward moments between the two, very believable siblings in that age. Roos seems interested in an older boy there, and it’s the source of confusion and frustration for Teun as he’s completely unsure what he is to her, when one moment she’s dismissive of him, and another moment very tender and loving towards him.

Towards the end of the film, they are at a dance, and Roos is looking at the boy she was flirting with making out with another girl. Teun comes over and tries to put a comforting hand on her shoulder. After a moment she grabs his hand and leads them away from the party, to sleep in their tent where she cries quietly.

Teun carefully puts his arm around her and she hugs his hand in response, neither saying anything.

Teun whispers she looked really pretty tonight, and after a moment, not saying anything, Roos turns around to face him and strokes his cheek with her thumb. They kiss awkwardly, and make out a bit, then go back to laying facing each other and whispering sweet dreams.

The final scene is the family driving home, with Teun looking outside, but you can tell things are going to be okay.

I really like this short, because despite the slightly taboo subject, it’s very tastefully made and ultimate very tender and sweet. It shows that awkwardness of growing up and having weird thoughts and feelings, and the complicated relationships we can have with people close to us, but there is none of that bitterness or things suddenly turning ugly, that usually comes with any stories with cesty content. It’s quite innocent and gentle, and I loved it for that.

It’s only 11 minutes long, so it’s well worth checking out if you can look it up.
