This is The Fighting Temeraire, tugged to her last berth to be broken up, 1838 by JMW Turner - a painting all about age differences, contrasting technologies, and the end of the the age of sail.

It depicts the HMS Termeraire, which fought in the Battle of Trafalgar, being towed by a small steam-powered tug up the Thames to be scrapped.

"Turner celebrates Temeraire’s heroic past, and he also depicts a technological change which had already begun to affect modern-day life in a more profound way than any battle. "Rather than placing Temeraire in the middle of his canvas, Turner paints the warship near the left edge of the canvas. He uses shades of white, grey, and brown for the boat, making it look almost like a ghost ship. The mighty warship is being pulled along by a tiny black tugboat, whose steam engine is more than strong enough to control its larger counterpart. Turner transforms the scene into an allegory about how the new steam power of the Industrial Revolution quickly replaced history and tradition." -Dr. Abram Fox

Ok. Deep breath

Here we go

Kearny Generating Station began producing power in 1925. Today, 2025, it sits abandoned and crumbling. A magnificent ruin.

The folks who brought it to life and kept it producing electricity, day in and day out for decades, must have loved it very much.

Too much to ever leave it, perhaps. The ghost has an undercoating of clear gel medium that is invisible from some angles and a bit glossy from others. That makes him more or less visible, depending on the angle the viewer is looking from.

The basic colors wrap around the edge.

I have spent an awful lot of time picking away at this the last two-ish months. I am happy it is done, and ready to see it hanging in a gallery. I hope-to-heck it's actually dry on Sunday, when I deliver it.

It’s been cloudy out so these aren’t the best pictures and there is still a bit to be done.. but I’m getting into oil painting and it’s a lot more forgiving than I thought!

Also holyfuckingshit my teacher ah was so Nice they really like the pink roses I painted saying they were well painted and im like bro that was by accident, and saying that though it's a van gogh like style they said it's more then that bc of my color choices and bro I wanna cry that's so nice ahh

Im so hanging this in my room once the fucking oil paint drys

So we had to chose the images by century so ones from the 18th, 19th and of course now hehe
