TATANKA IYOTAKE. This was my first design I created back in 2010. In my highest opinion from a very unbiased standpoint. This design still strikes me in a way that is hard to explain for an artist. In a very important way Sitting Bull was a very inspiring individual to me growing up. He was a very easy go to icon when it comes to a very powerful image. I think it was the right one to choose as a main staple design for my Enterprise. Being Lakota is very important to me. I am a mixed blood but in Lakota way none of that matters. I am Oglala and am very honored my creator made so. With all that being said I just wanted to express my admiration for this design and am very happy that I get to share this expression of my passion with all of you. -Wesley Running Bear "MATO INYANKA" ....BR HEARD, BE PROUD 🐻✊🏽✊🏽Here's to the SNP CRUE that has been with me since day 1. www.strengthnpride.com #STRENGTHNPRIDEAPPAREL #BeHeardBeProud #sittingbull #lakota #hunkpapa #oglala #oglalalakota #mato #tatankaiyotake #runningbear (at The Black Hills of South Dakota) https://www.instagram.com/p/CjGIMwtLJzC/?igshid=NGJjMDIxMWI=

Indigenous Hands
My mom and I never got along. She had me young, she was just a child and some part of her she never faced, resented me. She tried her best, but she was mentally ill. One day, after I was returned from foster care, we were watching “Seinfeld”. It was the Man Hands episode. I remember tucking my hands. My foster family had a daughter that said I had big, ugly, boy hands. When I told my mom, she looked at me like I was human for the first time. I wonder what she saw. She took my hands and said:
“You have indigenous hands, from Oglala Lakota. You have strong hands, that are meant to work and love the earth. You don’t have ugly hands, you have your ancestors hands; indigenous hands. Mine are the same.” She extended her fingers next to my lap where my hand rested and I followed suit. They were the same. Our knuckles and squared finger tips. When I looked past her red skin and my skin, the hue of a stranger, I saw it.
Some days, I can look at my hands and see the beauty. But it hurts because it’s the only thing I ever got from my mom.

“Before I was six years old, my grandparents and my mother had taught me that if all the green things that grow were taken from the earth, there could be no life. If all the four-legged creatures were taken from the earth, there could be no life. If all the winged creatures were taken from the earth, there could be no life. If all our relatives who crawl and swim and live within the earth were taken away, there could be no life. But if all the human beings were taken away, life on earth would flourish. That is how insignificant we are.” Russell Means, Oglala Lakota Nation (November 10, 1939 – October 22, 2012). YoNasDa Lonewolf also known as #QueenYoNasDa is an activist, hip hop artist & curator of #African and #Lakota heritage. YoNasDa (pronounced Yo-Naja-Ha) means “Precious Jewel”, & shes an enrolled member of the #OglalaLakota Nation. “No Nation Can Rise Higher Than Its Woman,” is a saying that breathes truth for her as she epitomizes this energy. Shes committed to continuing the work of her mother Wauneta Lone Wolf-Cox (1951 – 2003). “Its an honor to have two rich heritages running through my veins, but it was hard as well. Because I am brown skinned (not looking like the stereotypical #mixedperson) I was constantly in defense of #NativeAmericans in school, when the children didn’t think I was #NativeAmerican, and they would poke fun of us during #Thanksgiving by calling us “red skins,” “Indian givers,” and making “hey ya ya” sounds. The same way I felt as a child by standing up for who I am, I still am today” Yonasda’s mother was an Oglala Lakota social activist, youth counsellor & motivational speaker who also was part of the #AmericanIndianMovement (AIM). She worked with #MuhammadAli, the Nation of Islam as well as with the Honorable Minister #LouisFarrakhan (who is also YoNasDa’s grandfather) to bring closer relations between Black American and Native American Indian communities. Her father was the fine artist Theadius McCall, a Black American from Brooklyn, NY. As a kid YoNasDa stood by her mother’s and grandfather’s side speaking to the hip hop nation. She feels strongly about her responsibility to use her music as a mouth piece to educate and uplift young people. “Growing up, as a single mother, my mom did her best to raise my brother and I to make sure we knew our Native and African American history. Just imagine, at the age of 10 learning the story of the #TrailofTears and the #TransAtlanticSlaveTrade at the same time, and people thought seeing Roots was horrific. I had double punches of battery of the struggles of my people” Shes the estranged wife of Wu Tang Clan’s Cappadonna and mother of two. Shes in the process of completing her memoir. 🏴🇺🇸✊🏿#NativeAmericanHeritageMonth #mixedgirl #WCW https://www.instagram.com/p/CIBWdlIFPJw/?igshid=1re06rigi2fb3

My homework for this week involved drawing Native Americans. I hesitated about making/posting these because Native American cultures are already subject to frequent cultural appropriation, but in the end I decided I could turn it into an opportunity to educate myself (and, by sharing, others) about some historical figures I didn't know about. I did my best to represent everything accurately, but please correct me if I've gotten something wrong. In order, we have: - Nanyehi, a.k.a. Nancy Ward of the Cherokee ( https://wikipedia.org/wiki/Nancy_Ward ): After her husband was killed in the 1755 Battle of Taliwa, she picked up his rifle and led the Cherokee to victory. Earning the title of Beloved Woman, she went on to advocate for peace with the European colonists and introduced dairy production to the Cherokee. Of the four in this list, she was only one I didn't have photographic reference for, so the portrait is based off of artwork and costume design for the musical detailing her life story. - Chief Maȟpíya Lúta/Red Cloud of the Oglala Lakota ( https://wikipedia.org/wiki/Red_Cloud ). One of the most capable Native American opponents that the U.S. Army faced in its occupation of the western territories. After signing the Treaty of Fort Laramie (1868), he led his people in the transition to reservation life. - Chief Ógle Šá/Red Shirt of the Oglala Lakota ( https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Red_Shirt_(Oglala) ). A progressive leader who promoted friendly associations with whites and education for his people. He was one of the first Wild Westers with Buffalo Bill's Wild West and a supporter of the Carlisle Native Industrial School. - Winema, a.k.a. Toby Riddle of the Modoc ( https://wikipedia.org/wiki/Toby_Riddle ). Earning the name Winema (Woman Chief) as a girl after rescuing a group of fellow children caught in cascades in their canoe, she went on to serve as an interpreter in negotiations between the Modoc tribe and the United States Army during the Modoc War. She was one of the few Native American women to be awarded a military pension by the United States for her acts of heroism. #nativeamerican #cherokee #oglalalakota #modoc #nanyehi #nancyward #winema

Quick sprays at the chill spot today. Another piece interpreting a butterfly parfleche design through Style Writing techniques. Having had a chance to see some examples of the Kiowa 6 pochoir pieces, I was struck by the way these artists took dance regalia and reduced it down to simplified colors and forms. Taking the complexity of beadwork or quillwork and stripping it down to only color and form is definitely a challenge, but the results are interesting. - - - - - - - #hokaskenandore #hokaskenandoreart #WallsofBurque #NuevoMexico #Kimimila #Butterfly #ParflecheDesign #LakotaArt #StreetArt #StyleWriting #Neoglyphs #ContemporaryNativeArt #ContemporaryPainting #ContemporaryIndigenousArt #IndigenousDesign #OglalaLakota #Burque (at Albuquerque, New Mexico) https://www.instagram.com/p/Ca5-MgbMDM2/?utm_medium=tumblr
