Winema Riddle: A Woman of Many Names and Talents
My next novel will include scenes with Winema Riddle, a Native American woman who lived in Oregon in the 19th century. She served as an interpreter between the Army and the Modoc tribe during the Modoc War in 1972-73. Although best known as Winema Riddle, this Modoc woman took many names during her life, and she displayed a remarkable ability to work between the Native American and white…

Modoc ... ... L to R, standing: US Indian agent, Winema (Toby) and her husband Frank Riddle; other Modoc women in front, 1873 Tragedy of the Lava Beds ... She and her family toured with Meacham after the war, starring in his lecture-play "Tragedy of the Lava Beds", to inform American people about the war. Meacham later published a book about Winema, which he dedicated to her. In 1891 Toby Riddle was one of the few Native American women to be awarded a military pension by the United States Congress, for her heroic actions during the peace negotiations in 1873. (Her first name also appears spelled as "Tobey" in historical records.)

It was the 5th of December, 1998, and the Engebretson family were preparing for their traditional search for the perfect Christmas tree. The family were from Bonanza, Oregon, and their ideal spot for the annual search was the Winema National Forest, located near Rocky Point, which was replete with fir, pine, and manzanita.
That afternoon, 8-year-old Derrick Engebertson set off on the search with his father, Robert, and his grandfather, Bob. He was dressed warmly in a blue snowmobile suit, hat, and felt-lined boots. He was also carrying with him a hatchet which he carried in anticipation of helping chop down the perfect trees.
Derrick was a brown-haired third-grader and his family had nicknamed him “Bear Boy” due to his love for the wilderness. The family lived on forested land, and Derrick had distinguished himself as a mushroom picker. He enjoyed tagging along on the family hunts as well, seeking out black-tailed deer, bobcat, and black bear. “Ever since he was a baby, he’s been out in the woods hunting and stuff,” said Lori.
In addition to his love for the outdoors, Derrick also loved sports, especially baseball, basketball, soccer and football. He had even taken a few swings with a golf club. The only time Derrick was ever really indoors was at nightfall, when he liked to curl up in front of the television and watch shows about animals.
There were really only two things that scared little Derrick: the dark and cougars.
The search for the Christmas tree got off to a good start. They had purchased permits for three trees – one for each family and then another for a friend. The family had driven to Rocky Point at around 2PM, and they hiked into the woods together. They had hiked around 150 yards, and were heading in the direction of a nearby ridge.
Derrick was armed with his hatchet, as the family moved through the woodland together. After a while, however, Derrick and his grandfather had found themselves trailing behind Robert. As Bob later explained, Derrick had a penchant for wandering off. “Footloose and fancy free,” Bob recollected.
Bob was trying to keep an eye on Derrick, but also keep an eye out for the perfect tree. Derrick also kept commenting to his grandfather that he wanted to run ahead, to catch up with his father. He asked his grandfather again and again if he could run ahead and Bob reluctantly agreed.
As Bob continued in his search, he could see that based on the snowy footprints, Derrick was following Robert’s footprints perfectly. He had no reason to worry, so he turned around and continued in his search, as Robert continued in his. He surmised that his grandson had caught up with his father, and assisting him in his search.
A short time later, Robert and Bob met up on the road. They were both noticeably alone. “Where’s Derrick?” asked Robert. Bob replied: “I thought he was with you.” Robert responded: “No, I told him to stay with you.”

Random unsolicited challenge feel free to ignore I'm just suddenly curious: What LoSH villain would you assign to each song in the disney villain medley? (Link for reference https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=tBYGmHagPDE ) can also do general DC villains if you'd prefer
This was actually a lot of fun! Hope people see my vision!
Poor Unfortunate Souls - The Emerald Eye Be Prepared - Mordru, but if we really pay attention to the fratricide elements this is Mekt. Hellfire - ??? I am struggling placing this one just due to the sheer level of sexual entitlement, shame, ego and madness. Any input? Gaston - This is Superboy Prime (he wishes)
Mother Knows Best - Winema Wazzo
Friends on the Other Side - Mysa Prince Ali (Reprise) - Computo as a stretch.

for the music thing: 2, 11, 15, 23, 7?
2:A song you like with a number in the title
this is almost too easy, bc the magnetic fields have a 50-song album with numbers in all the titles, but I do still have to pick. hmmm. Probably '93: Me and Fred and Dave and Ted. That's a fun one.
11:A song that you never get tired of
oooo a tough one! I get tired of songs pretty easily tbh. But More Weight by Captain Vampire has been a favorite of mine for a few years!
15:A song that is a cover by another artist
Oh! I've got the perfect one for this - moon racer's cover of Meaningless by the Magnetic Fields. it's very much a 180 on the musical direction while still keeping the emotion intact.
23:A song that you think everybody should listen to
idk man. music is so subjective. but I think hands down the song I recommend to people the most is I Saw Something Three Years Ago in an Obscure Part of the Winema National Forest by Rory John. absolute masterpiece.
7:A song to drive to
oooo I like Family Happiness by The mountain Goats for this. definitely kind of a harsh mood but it's fun that way
Thanks for the ask!!

In the Pacific Northwest, five landscapes are being prioritized for investments. In Washington state, they include the Northeast Washington landscape on the Colville National Forest and the central Washington initiative on the Okanagan-Wenatchee National Forest. In Oregon, they include the Central Oregon landscape on the Deschutes National Forest, the landscape around the Mount Hood National Forest, and the Klamath River Basin landscape, which includes portions of the Fremont-Winema National Forest in Oregon as well as several California forests.

Sarah Winnemucca: 19th Century Advocate for Native Americans
Last month I wrote about Winema Riddle, a Native American woman who pursued justice for her people in 19th century Oregon. Sarah Winnemucca was another prominent Native American woman in Oregon at the time who also advocated for her people. Sarah Winnemucca was born into an influential Northern Paiute family in what is now Nevada. Her Paiute name as a child was Thocmetony, meaning Shell Flower,…

Mina pulled out her map, "We'll keep going down this road until we hit interstate 5 and go North, We're going to the Fremont-Winema National Forest in Oregon."
She looked at him, "Are you still going to write for us?"
“So, you want to interview vampires, so you?”

My homework for this week involved drawing Native Americans. I hesitated about making/posting these because Native American cultures are already subject to frequent cultural appropriation, but in the end I decided I could turn it into an opportunity to educate myself (and, by sharing, others) about some historical figures I didn't know about. I did my best to represent everything accurately, but please correct me if I've gotten something wrong. In order, we have: - Nanyehi, a.k.a. Nancy Ward of the Cherokee ( https://wikipedia.org/wiki/Nancy_Ward ): After her husband was killed in the 1755 Battle of Taliwa, she picked up his rifle and led the Cherokee to victory. Earning the title of Beloved Woman, she went on to advocate for peace with the European colonists and introduced dairy production to the Cherokee. Of the four in this list, she was only one I didn't have photographic reference for, so the portrait is based off of artwork and costume design for the musical detailing her life story. - Chief Maȟpíya Lúta/Red Cloud of the Oglala Lakota ( https://wikipedia.org/wiki/Red_Cloud ). One of the most capable Native American opponents that the U.S. Army faced in its occupation of the western territories. After signing the Treaty of Fort Laramie (1868), he led his people in the transition to reservation life. - Chief Ógle Šá/Red Shirt of the Oglala Lakota ( https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Red_Shirt_(Oglala) ). A progressive leader who promoted friendly associations with whites and education for his people. He was one of the first Wild Westers with Buffalo Bill's Wild West and a supporter of the Carlisle Native Industrial School. - Winema, a.k.a. Toby Riddle of the Modoc ( https://wikipedia.org/wiki/Toby_Riddle ). Earning the name Winema (Woman Chief) as a girl after rescuing a group of fellow children caught in cascades in their canoe, she went on to serve as an interpreter in negotiations between the Modoc tribe and the United States Army during the Modoc War. She was one of the few Native American women to be awarded a military pension by the United States for her acts of heroism. #nativeamerican #cherokee #oglalalakota #modoc #nanyehi #nancyward #winema

Went to the beach with these two turkeys yesterday. Auntie and niece day. Did the same trip 3 yrs ago and maaaaan have they changed a ton since then! Maddie has an attitude like no other and drives me crazy with her questions and know-it-all personality. And Cady can’t sit still or keep her hands to herself to save her own life. Needless to say my nerves were a little shot by the time we got home. 10:30am- 10pm with these two in a small car driving to different beaches.. 🙄🤷🏼♀️🤦🏽♀️🔫🤪 lol
