October 2021 3rd person pov

Aniyah Sanchez was uncomfortable, she has been at this house party for 2 hours and if one more frat boy tried to hit on her or try to touch her she was gonna scream, she was only here because her teammates wanted to go out and since they haven't in over a year she was down to come but now Aniyah's over it. It's hot, she's tired, it's crowded, and her teammates were preoccupied with other people leaving Aniyah alone on a couch in the living room surrounded by loud drunk students.

"Damn girl you are bad as shit" a male voice says in her ear way too close for comfort.

"6 feet” Aniyah says, finding herself starting to feel annoyed.

"My bad" the guy next to her said, backing up a little

Aniyah looked at the guy over seeing a light skinned guy with short curly hair and green eyes. Both of his arms are covered in tattoos, his teeth a vibrant white.

She could tell by the smirk on his face he usually got whatever girl he wanted and the way he shamelessly checked out Aniyah made her skin crawl.

"I'm gay boo so move along"Aniyah says looking at her nails dismissing the man.

"Damn don't be like that girl, so I can't even get your name,I'm Ant” 'he says flashing his million dollar smile.

Aniyah took a deep breath hoping telling Ant her name he would just leave her alone.

"Aniyah'' She replied, praying that the interaction would end.

"See, that was so hard," Ant says, sitting down on the couch.

“Why are you sitting down?" Aniyah questions her eyebrows furrowing in confusion.

You don't want no friends?" Ant questions smirking.

He didn't believe the girl next to him could be gay she is way too beautiful. Ant figured if he smooth talked to her and got her to take her guard down he would be golden.

"Nope" Aniyah says, putting emphasis on the letter p.

“ What you drink, let me get you a drink from the kitchen,” Ant says, smirking.

“Fuck no” Aniyah says rolling her eyes.

”Damn, you kinda mean," Ant said, rubbing the back of his neck.

Not sure what to say,he didn't want to give up on the beauty,he was sure she was the most attractive girl in the party right now. He couldn't help but to stare at her hazel almond shaped eyes, they hung low and Ant couldn't tell if it was from weed or was it natural.

"I'm not mean enough seeing that you are still here trying to talk to me" Aniyah responds back rolling her eyes once more.

"Sheesh" Ant mumbles.

Aniyah's standoffish attitude wasn't gonna deter him though. Once again Ant begin’s to stare at Aniyah, this time noticing how full her lips are,and he couldn't help but think what they would feel like wrapped around his dick.

"Nigga can you stop staring at me" Aniyah snaps glaring over at Ant

"What's with the attitude shawty?" Ant asks, eyebrows creased in confusion.

"I'm gonna say this nicely. I'm a lesbian, I'm not interested at all, leave me alone before I get real mean "Aniyah stresses, about to go off on the man.

"How you even know you gay?" Ant asks, disregarding what Aniyah said trying to scoot closer to the brown skinned girl.

"How do you even know you're straight?" Aniyah questions.

"I'm serious, I think you haven’t got the right dick yet" Ant says, his eyes trailing down the girl's body hungrily. Aniyah looked at the guy sitting next to her with pure repulse, not too sure Ant took the girl's silence as a cue to move closer and touch Aniyah's thigh.

"Don't fucking touch me nigga, are you fucking dumb dickhead" Aniyah yells pushing Ant away from her.

"Why are you acting like a bitch, I'm being nice to you and everything, you ain't that cute to have that much of a fucked up attitude" Ant complains, his eyebrows furrowed in anger.

"Because I'm gay, I'm a fucking lesbian,I don't know why your dumbass can't grasp that shit, my body language and my words are telling you that I don't want to be fucking bothered, stop trying to talk to me, I'm not interested in your dumbass take the fucking hint!" Aniyah yells even louder.

Before Ant could reply to the girl yelling next to him, someone behind him spoke up.

“Yo, I don't think she wants to be bothered, move along” A tall blond said behind Ant.

Aniyah looks over at the girl instantly recognizing her as a player on UConn's women's basketball team, she couldn't lie the point guard looked good, way too good if you asked Aniyah. The blond had on an all black Nike tech suit with low top panda dunks on her feet, her straight hair pulled back in a low bun.

"This you?" Ant questions the girl towering over him.

"Yup, that's all me” Paige says, licking her lips and looking past Ant and at Aniyah.

“Nah you lying, she’s pretty as hell he can’t be gay” Ant replies in disbelief.

“You sound ignorant as hell bro, get the fuck outta here, ain’t nothing over here for you” Paige says glaring at the guy.

“Whatever, shawty wasn’t that cute anyway" Ant gumbles, stomping away, angry he couldn’t take Aniyah home.

“My bad ma,I didn't mean to come over like that, but I overheard you and I couldn't just stand there and listen to that shit happen” Paige says rubbing the back of her neck.

”I appreciate it, I really do,” Aniyah says, biting her bottom lip.

She likes hearing the point guard call her ma, and between the eye contact and the nickname it all made Aniyah feel somewhat special and giddy. but the giddy feeling disappeared once Aniyah remembered that Paige is a player and that she has probably said these same things to other girls. After hearing so many stories about Paige from her teammate Jazmine she's not sure if she really wants to deal with Paige on a serious level, but she didn't mind having fun.

“What's up ma, you good?” Paige asks,her face etched with concern noticing a slight change in Aniyah’s mood.

Paige is so excited to finally talk to the girl, she's seen her everywhere and she couldn't get the girl out of her mind,no matter how hard Paige tried. The first time Paige saw Aniyah on campus was in the dining hall, the second time she saw her was at the library and the third time she saw her was at her game sitting in the crowd and Paige ended up scoring 31 points that night.

As bad as she wanted to go up to the girl each time, Paige decided not to,knowing she has a player reputation. A nasty rumor that started going around on campus during Paige’s freshman year and not being sure if the girl to her left was aware of the rumors about her she never had the confidence to go up to the girl.

Paige was excited, as soon as she saw the girl walk in with the rest of her friends Paige knew this was her chance to talk to her. She proceeded to watch the girl from afar the moment she got here two hours ago waiting for the opportunity to speak to her.

After gaining some liquid courage and overhearing what was happening with Ant, she knew she couldn't pass up the opportunity to help the girl out and talk to her. Paige has let the girl slip through her fingers on three separate occasions; she refused to let it happen again.

“Yeah I'm good,” Aniyah says, flashing a closed mouth smile.

“You sure?” Paige asks scooting a little closer.

“I promise I'm sure” Aniyah responds softly looking in Paige’s eyes.

The energy around the two girls felt thick as they continued to look at each other, their stares filled with lust and longing.

“Is this okay?” Paige questions softly, putting her hand on Aniyah’s exposed thigh.

“Yes” says just as soft her eyes never leaving the intense stare of Paige's blue eyes.

“What's your name ma?”Paige asks softly in the girl’s ear.

“Aniyah” She responds just as softly, glancing down at Paige's lips.

“Paige,” the blond says, holding out her hand to the girl.

Paige kissed Aniyah's hand and she immediately started to feel flustered trying to hide her smile Aniyah faced the other direction.

“You are so beautiful please don't hide that pretty ass smile from me, I love it already” Paige says while gently turning Aniyah's face back to her.

Aniyah's smile and the blush on her face grew even wider. Paige smiled back enamored by the braces clad girl, she wanted to learn everything she could about Aniyah she has never been this attracted and infatuated with anyone before especially not this fast.

”Do you smoke”? Paige asks after a moment pulling out a baggie with 4 blunts in the process.

“Of course,” Aniyah responds.

“Come out back with me, It’s hot, loud and packed in here and I wanna get to know you better” Paige says standing up.

Aniyah stood up with her and they walked towards the back of the house. Paige led Aniyah through the party with her hand resting on the small of her back.

Aniyah couldn’t lie she became enamored with Paige in the short amount of time of being in her presence just off of the energy alone, she wasn't stupid though. Even though Jazmine’s words about Paige kept playing over and over in her head, and right now Paige is saying all of the right things that's and doing all of the right stuff.

Even down to her confidence that bordered on cockiness that was emitting out of her, It all screamed player and it made her nervous, but Aniyah isn’t looking for anything too serious right now, she couldn’t even look for something serious if she even tried so this could be a good thing.

The pair walked towards the outdoor couch, the twosome both picking opposite sides of the wicker couch to sit.

“Why you sitting so far, come mere” Paige mumbles, lighting the blunt.

Aniyah inhaled trying to not let her attraction for the girl make her make a fool of herself.

“That’s it ma, I won't bite, I mean unless you want me too” Paige teases, her eyes are already starting to become hazy. Paige passes Aniyah the blunt and she watches the girl inhale and look up in the sky.

The vibe between the two was thick with tension, both semi lost in their thoughts about each other and how to proceed in the conversation.

“Tell me bout yourself” Paige says, glancing down at Aniyah’s lips.

“What do you wanna know?” Aniyah questions.

“Everything” Paige states, turning to face the girl.

“Well I’m 19, Aquarius gang over here, a Freshman, I’m from PA, my major is Sports Management and my favorite color is green '' Aniyah says rattling off basic information about herself.

“Where in PA, and you know i wanna know your birthday mama not ya sign, lemme me know when that is” Paige says rubbing her hands together.

“February 13th” Aniyah says, finishing up the blunt and pulling out another one. "Damn, Ma you a stoner for real huh” Paige teases.

“Yeah” Aniyah says laughing and lighting the blunt, her eyes glossy and red.

“Back to birthday’s tho, it’s lowkey crazy that ya birthday is right before Valentine’s Day''Paige says laughing.

“I know right, It’s pretty chill I guess,'' Aniyah says, feeling like she’s talking about herself a little too much.

“You didn’t answer my other question though” Paige says, blowing out smoke, looking over at Aniyah intensely.

“ What question?” Aniyah questions her eyebrows furrowed in confusion.

``Where in PA you from, I meant it when I said, I wanna know everything bout you” Paige says softly while staring at the girl.

“I’m from Upper Darby, it’s the Philly suburbs,” Aniyah explains.

“Cool, cool Imma have to come see the vibe down there” Paige said smiling.

" Okay I'll take you one day, I wanna know about you know, tell me about you though” Aniyah replies softly. “Well I’m from Minnesota, I'm 20, I play ball, my birthday is October 20th and my favorite color is purple,” Paige responds.

“Oh shit happy belated birthday, I'm sorry I didn't realize your birthday was a couple of days ago,” Aniyah says, playing with her fingers.

It’s aight ma, how was you supposed to know we just met like 30 mins ago ''Paige jokes.

“I know, but still” Aniyah says, pouting

“Do you like basketball?” Paige questions after another moment of silence.

“Yeah, not as much as my sister though, I've even been to a couple of Uconn games” Aniyah says.

“ How often do you usually go to the games?” Paige questions, licking her lips.

“Whenever I can really” Aniyah answers looking over at Paige, glancing at her lips in the process.

“You be busy?” Paige asks quietly while focusing intently on Aniyah.

“A lot of times yeah, I do gymnastics and sometimes I genuinely just don't feel like leaving my dorm, my sister goes to all of the games though,she said she's gonna get y'all to come to my meets” Aniyah rambles.

Paige’s heart drops a little hearing that Aniyah is a gymnast, the chances of her knowing about those rumors have increased tenfold.

“Who ya sister?” Paige questions her eyes glancing down at Aniyah’s lips.

“Nuveah Sanchez” Aniyah answers.

Paige’s face lit up upon hearing the Soccer players name, Nuveah and Paige had gotten pretty close during the 2020 school year, they really couldn't hang out or interact too much,however they would play Fortnite and text all of the time.

“Nu-Nu is my dawg, she talks about you all of the time, she never said your name though or showed you to us, I would've remembered” Paige says once again glancing down at Aniyah’s lips.

No matter how hard Paige tried not to look at Aniyah’s lips she couldn't help but to, they look so soft and smooth and she desperately wants to feel them on hers. Aniyah quickly caught on to Paige staring at her lips; Paige wasn't even being sneaky anymore she was blatantly staring at her lips. Aniyah didn't mind though, in fact it made Aniyah feel prideful and bold. Licking her lips Aniyah glances over at Paige to see her reaction. Paige bites her lip and clears her throat moving closer to Aniyah so there's no room in between them. Grabbing the blunt gently from Paige’s hand Aniyah lights it puffs and exhales.

“Can I try something?” Aniyah questions softly, grabbing Paige’s chin

“Yeah of course ma” Paige says just as softly, her eyes low and her voice husky.

Aniyah takes a hit from the blunt and lightly puts her lips on Paige’s blowing smoke into her mouth in the process. Paige opens her mouth accepting the smoke.

“Damn” Paige says, exhaling the smoke, her eyes dilated and low.

Aniyah touched her lips still feeling Paige’s lips on hers. Paige wants to kiss Aniyah, the spark she felt when she had her lips lightly touched her lips still lingered.

Your lips are so soft" Paige says softly while gently tracing Aniyah’s lips with her thumb.

"Thank you" Aniyah says, staring in Paige’s eyes.

"Can I feel them again ma?" Paige asks, her voice low, dripping with desire.

Aniyah leans in, her lips softly gently meets Paige’s lips in a kiss that is firm and soft. Paige sighs into the kiss, her hands slowly sliding down to Aniyah’s waist. Breaking the kiss Aniyah rests her forehead against Paige’s relishing the kiss the pair just had. Paige wants to kiss Aniyah again, the kiss was everything that Paige thought it would be plus more. She wants to kiss Aniyah over and over again. Before Paige could lean in and kiss Aniyah once again a voice interrupts her.

“There you are, I was looking for you, i’m ready to go” Jazmine whines coming outside.

Paige separates from Aniyah after hearing Jazmine's voice not wanting the girl to catch them she didn’t have it in her to deal with a Jazmine tantrum.

“Hey girl” Aniyah says awkwardly slowly scooting away from Paige.

Jazmine felt anger bubbling up inside when she saw Paige with Aniyah, she had so many questions, why were they out here alone, and why did they look so awkward and guilty.

“What’s going on with ya’ll?” Jazmine questions annoyance covering her features.

“Nothing, we just chilling,” Paige mumbles, looking down.

Agitation and sadness spread throughout Paige once she saw Jazmine, Aniyah knowing Jazmine made Paige realize that she 100% knows about the rumors or that they sleep together which made Paige a little worried, she wants to try to pursue something with the girl, and those two big factors make things a little more complicated for Paige.

“You ready to go?” Jazmine asks sharply to Aniyah while glaring over at Paige.

“Yeah, just gimme a minute, I'll meet you out front” Aniyah says dismissing Jazmine.

“I can wait for you here” Jazmine says sitting in between Paige and Aniyah.

“ Chill, we just talking,” Paige grunts, feeling annoyed.

“You can’t talk in front of me?” Jazmine questions angrily at the blond.

“Why you acting like this”? Paige asks, looking over at Jazmine, her nostrils flaring in the process.

“Like what, I’m just waiting for my friend” Jazmine challenges.

“Whatever bro” Paige mutters her voice low and tense.

Aniyah sat clueless at the end of the wicker couch confused on the nature of the relationship between the two girls, Jazmine always says that Paige did her friend dirty, but this is a little too intense. Jazmine seems way too jealous right now for her and Paige to not be way more familiar than her just being a friend of someone that Paige fucked in the past.

“Get my number from Nu-Nu, imma go head and leave, I’ll talk to you later okay” Aniyah says standing up.

“Aight ma” Paige mumbles standing up and pulling Aniyah into a hug.

Jazmine stares angrily at Paige during the hug with Aniyah biting her tongue not wanting to expose the nature of her relationship with Paige, she will be addressing Paige about this later.

“Let’s go” Jazmine huffs getting up.

“Jazzy slow down, why are you so mad?” Aniyah says as she struggles to keep up with Jazmine.

“We’ll talk when we get to our dorm” Jazmine grumbles.

“Girl what, I wanna talk right now” Aniyah says not appreciating how Jazmine is treating her like a child.

“Why did you do the opposite of what I said with Paige” Jazmine questions her voice tense with anger.

Aniyah blinks, not wanting to go off on Jazmine, taking a deep breath Aniyah pauses before continuing.

“Because I wanted to, why are you so mad about this?” Aniyah questions her eyebrow raised slightly.

“I told you all the shit did to my friend, and you ignore that and still go fuck with her”Jazmine says her tone confused.

“I don’t want nor can I do a relationship, so I’m cool with just fucking around” Aniyah says nonchalantly shrugging.

Jazmine rolls her eyes and says nothing to Aniyah, knowing that she would say some smart shit to her, and she damn sure didn’t want to have any issues with Aniyah. Both girls get inside the uber the energy between them is icy and tense. After getting to her dorm Aniyah wordlessly goes inside her room. She truly didn’t understand why Jazmine is being so weird about Paige, she appreciates the girl for trying to look out for her but she’s good. She’ll just check in with the girl and make sure they are still good when the sun comes out.

After completing her nightly routine Aniyah laid in bed scrolling through Tik Tok, when she got a message that made her smile grow immensely.

Kuroshitsuji Musical ~ 寄宿学校の秘密 (Secrets of the Boarding School) 2024 ~ VERA’S REVIEW!

Yes you read that right! I’ve had the most fateful chance to watch the very first performance of the newest Kuromyu in Hyogo last Saturday, so I figured I’ll eternalize some of my best memories here.

Before we begin: the LIVE STREAMING is available for the LAST PERFORMANCE, September 29th 2024, HERE! For only 3800 yen, you’ll get to watch it live at home, or watch it later for up to 1 week (October 6th)! Apparently you need a Japanese VPN though, if anyone knows how to navigate the site, please do share.

A few disclaimers from me:

*Anti-shippers DNI. This post barely has any shipping content at all but I don’t like people who harass others over fictional preferences. I’m a shipper, I can’t help being biased for my OTPs.

**Since photos were prohibited in the venue, I’ve included stage pictures featured in official news websites or accounts.

***This is by no means a critical review but merely a fangirl’s ramblings, and I often drew comparisons to the original stage play Kuroshitsuji Musical: Secrets of the Boarding School (2021). For reference, I suggest you watch it first! I intentionally avoided rewatching the 2021 version close to the airing date though, so my memories may not be accurate. Also my Japanese is mediocre so I apologize if there were important dialogues I didn’t catch.

Introduction

I know, sorry for the dilly-dally intro. But I’d like to first stress that ever since I started following Kuroshitsuji in my first year of university (like 9 years ago now lmao), I’ve ALWAYS dreamed to watch the stage musical live in person. When 2024’s performance was announced immediately after the last episode of the anime, I was overjoyed to see that our old cast was coming back.

And it was fate that gave me the opportunity - my scheduled work program this year was set to be in Kyoto AND during September! Needless to say, I had the Kuromyu ticket bought and reserved first, before my confirmation with the Kyoto office or my visa and plane ticket. Priorities, right?

Quick remark on the ticket process: I hit a snag right in the beginning because the ticket reservation website Eplus required a Japanese phone number to sign up. I contacted multiple people (middle school friend whose brother used to work in Japan, another who was quarter-Japanese, several dealer websites with high rate exchanges), until I settled on my roommate’s friend from high school who was currently working there. Many thanks to her and my roommate for the help!

She took care of registration for me - even so the advance sales was a LOTTERY ticket! We fortunately got the lucky draw - I saw many Japanese fans on X who were not so lucky, while others bought in bulk to sell later. Then, I used the online barcode to exchange for a paper ticket when I arrived in Japan on September 1st. That’s when I get to know my seat number - 3rd floor, 2nd row B. A very far position from the stage, but it’s alright because we’re here for the atmosphere anyway!

The performances for the first 2 days were set in Hyogo Performing Arts Center, KOBELCO grand hall. I’ve honestly never been to any kind of music performance (or even concerts) in my life, so I was blown away by the sheer size of the venue.

By 10 AM, the audience was trickling in. I was in awe of the fact that you can tell who was coming in to watch kuromyu - beautiful women dressed in black-and-white tones, many even sporting gothic lolita bows and dresses to keep up with the Victorian England theme. In fact, it felt like the whole of Ikebukuro were gathered here in this very building!

We were ushered into the hall entrance at 11 AM and let me tell you, the crowd was suffocating! In front of the theater, there was a goods section for Kuromyu merch. I’m so glad I took the time to queue up because it seems some of the merch were starting to sell out by the second day. The booth clerk looked perplex to see a non-Japanese customer here though. Here’s how the line looked like, and this was still early before most of the audiences got in:

I realized then as we were settling in that some ladies around me had binoculars!! Well how was I supposed to know you could bring those here, instead of trying to find those fancy opera glasses!?! Ah well, I was lucky that I’d recently had my prescription glasses updated and the seat to my left was vacant, so I could lean in to see the center better.

The Performance

While it is true that you can barely see the actors’ faces from the balcony seats, it was the grandness of the performance itself that blew me away. For the first time I could see the stage in all its entirety, all the actors dancing in synchronization, and the special effects…oh it had improved A LOT from 3 years prior!

The stage sets for Weston may look a tad “crowded” in the still photo, as compared to the original where they used white backgrounds but in reality, it blended in so prettily with the flashing stage lights. The middle section was a rotating floor and one of my memorable scenes was where Ciel and Sebastian were discussing their plans while crossing the rotating stage, to give the illusion of “strolling across the school grounds.” Sounds like a simple trick but if looked amazing from above.

On to the story itself - the execution actually barely changed from the 2021 rendition, which for me, was a relief! Now I know, some would argue a rerun should add in different elements, because who would want to see the same thing twice right? From past experiences with Kuromyu, the reruns tend to be hit or miss - different actors, different song remixes, voice changes, and so on. For this performance, I could barely tell that the cast (apart from Ciel, Sebastian and Undertaker) were all new members. Everyone got into character flawlessly!

The story of course followed the entirety of the Public School Arc. The script and choreography was almost identical to the 2021 stage musical version. If you would remember, this Kuroshitsuji arc was the first to be portrayed on stage before the anime adaptation - same as previously, they seemed to take inspiration from the manga only rather than the anime.

Some key moments from the play:

The opening sequence was again a recap of the previous arcs - Jack the Ripper (Lycoris that Blazed the Earth), Book of Circus (Noah’s Ark Circus), Book of the Atlantic (Tango on the Campania). I’ve always loved this part because you could tell they slipped in iconic themes from the past musicals.

Perfect Black: the main theme, and my favorite from this stage! I’m so happy to have heard it live! *swoons* Thank god they didn’t do anything weird to remix it. The whole cast dancing together was beautiful! However I thought 2021 did it better with the dramatic light focus on Sebastian during the chorus drop.

Ciel’s Earl of Phantomhive outfit was changed from the glittery blue suit to a blue-green checkered coat this year. (I’d have bought his Earl photoshoot set if I knew it beforehand) Yana-sensei later tweeted that she was the one to re-design it, to better match Eito. Then Eito Konishi himself replied, saying he was honored to play as Ciel Phantomhive, to which Yana-sensei praised his singing and called him “Eito-bocchan” …boy was he fanboying hard over that. He’s one of us!!

Arrival at Weston: I don’t have a comment on the P4 in particular, they were all straightforward from the manga. I think I like Redmond’s character the most here, he looked very pretty with the side-ponytail and while he was a show-off still, he wasn’t as annoying or arrogant as I somehow expected.

A notable interaction: Violet forcing Greenhill to pose for him at the swan gazebo. Greenhill’s actor really looked strained trying to keep an upside down bridge pose (Edward was supporting his back, but kept getting distracted). When he broke the pose and got up, Violet hit him over the head with his sketchbook so hard that the thump echoed through the hall.

As for the Prefect’s Fags: Edward and Cheslock were giving off some suspiciously gay rivals-to-lovers vibes over here. Which I kinda vibed with, I hope they kept the energy into the Blue Cult Arc!

One important thing: they kept the ALL the Fag lines! Which in Japanese accent also kinda sounded like them repeatedly calling each other “Fućk”. Oh how I wish the anime had kept those!

Soma Asman Kadar: now this guy deserves an ovation just for himself. Not only did he kill the role, he was also the funniest! Soma’s song was greatly improved and lengthened with catchier music and dancing - when his troupe “arrived” at Weston, he even dragged Ciel and Clayton to join in. I can’t do it justice, you have GOT to see those two English gentlemen crack the Indian dance moves! His pestering of Maurice Cole was hilarious and he kept exasperating Ciel out of his character, their chemistry was wonderful. I really didn’t expect to get hooked by Soma in this arc out of all people! Too bad Agni wasn’t here.

Maurice Cole’s miniarc - Flawless. Sometimes I wonder if he was an easy character to play just because his character trait is so extremely over-the-top lol.

The library kabedon scene and sebaciel burning Purple House scene didn’t exist. Another scene cut off from the last musical was where Clayton and the Blue House kids were congratulating Ciel on his fag duties and Sebastian took the chance to blend in with them. Sadly that was one of my favorite adlibs.

Ciel’s dream sequence: this was originally in the 2021 musical. After a talk with Macmillain made him revisit his past trauma, Ciel “dreamed” of the cultists, and Sebastian’s close call with Undertaker in BotA. I actually forgot about this part when I watched it in theater - the highlight was sebaciel reenacting the scene in BotA where they reached for each other, the enactment surprisingly gave me the impression of Ciel’s “worry” over Sebastian’s “vulnerability” here. Unlike the 2021 version though, Undertaker didn’t pull Ciel into a bridal carry or referenced the R!Ciel wake-up scene as clearly.

The second half after the break was the long-awaited Cricket Match. Like the previous version, there was no scene of Ciel jumping into Master Michaelis’ arms, but I think they just couldn’t fit that one into the sequence. The cricket songs were mostly the same as the original - with an improvement being them cutting out Red House’s random beauty pageant contest. It actually felt like the cricket match went by faster this time, which was a win in my book. I’ve heard people complain of Kuromyu 2021 being a “Prince of Cricket” musical, hence the bad reviews back then.

The laxative meat pie scene was hilarious. From Sebastian faking it as a student complete with Red House’s uniform, to the team’s diarrhea horrors. Redmond stole the show again, as he was going to help Harcourt in the middle of the field, but tragedy struck which made him deadpan: “Oh. Someone get Harcourt.” Then immediately left the stage lol. The Blue House kids lifted Harcourt out.

The Green vs Purple house battle was the same as last time. I always felt bad to see Cheslock being the only Purple kid doing his best because without any support member cast while Violet was sitting in the grass. But this time, he gave Cheslock a tree sculpture of his bust as a good-job reward! Good for them.

Lastly Green vs Blue. They incorporated the rotating stage again in the last batting when Greenhill accidentally hit Ciel. The end of the match cut straight to the Thames Boat Ride, then they did the Blue House cheering scene after. Sebastian finally got to do his signature bridal carry, awww.

Midnight tea party: the setting was even more beautiful than last time. Undertaker letting his hair fall from his hat was iconic as usual. I was impressed with Master Agares’ fight scenes because his actor looked quite older than his 2021 predecessor. I always liked how they did Derrick Arden’s death in the musical, it felt more anguished from the P4 POV while in the anime, it just felt like a gruesome horror scene.

Final musical number was Ciel-Sebastian-Undertaker chorus during their fight in the garden. Music and choreography seemed to be similar, EXCEPT they somehow changed the iconic “Your life is my priority” scene!!! 2021’s version had me hold my breath as Sebastian had his arm possessively hooked around Ciel and took off his glove with his teeth (seriously, you have to see it yourself). This time they had Sebastian and Ciel reenact the scene on the highest stage instead of front and center, and I didn’t feel as much suspense nor was there any glove-removal from what I could see. It was also a weird placement because they were so far away, and Undertaker should’ve been the one on the top as he did his goodbye pose holding the moon.

We end the story with Sebastian recapping the aftermath with Weston’s students, and finally sebaciel’s conversation back at the manor. Again, Ciel reiterates that Sebastian is the only one who could never lie nor betray his trust. Perfect Black came on as an outro, and I got chills when Sebastian ended the last verse on a raised note!

The curtain call was the experience I’d waited for. Somehow I only realized just then that the actors would do the full call during their finale performance, which was what we got to see in the recordings! That day, after the cast bowed twice, the exit announcement immediately came on but guess what? The audience, including myself, kept clapping all the way through the announcement, it went for so long that the cast actually came out to take another bow! As they returned on stage, most of us also stood up for a standing ovation - according to twitter this doesn’t seem to be a regular occurrence outside of the finale. It felt like a truly wholesome “welcome back” for the troupe and for Kuromyu, especially after the rather harsh criticisms from the previous stage (due to major cast and style changes, even I took a while to bring myself to watch it) and the long break due to the COVID years.

Overall summary

Kuroshitsuji Musical 2024 was a faithful rerun of its predecessor. They succeeded with the musical numbers, new cast, overall adaptation of the story. The settings, props and special effects were wonderfully upgraded. The original cast carried the show: Eito Konishi’s singing felt greatly improved and I thought he carried himself as more mature than his last performance as Ciel. Sebastian’s Toshiki Tateishi had a mesmerizing voice the more I listened to him, he never went out of breath even while dancing or fighting - truly vocals fit for the troupe leader. Kandai Ueda did well as his own Undertaker too, even with Undertaker’s peculiar accent.

My few complaints: I felt like the P4 cast (bar Redmond) could do to have more distinction in their tones and movements. It felt hard to distinguish who was talking at times. The performance seemed to have a faster pacing this time around, and you get less absorbed in certain conversations between the characters, so I wished they’d added in slow scenes here and there. And of course I miss the signature sebaciel moments that I’ve mentioned - granted, this manga arc had always been my least favored because of the lack of sebaciel interactions anyway! So I’d say they did the best with the source material.

While I enjoyed seeing my favorite production performed live with the music blasting through my eardrums, it was the atmosphere that truly made the experience for me. Sitting in the 4-storeys grand hall full of some 2000 Kuroshitsuji fans really pulled me back in time, especially during the standing ovation. I’m so happy to see my favorite series so loved after all these years. I’m sure Yana-sensei could feel it too.

I wish a successful performance for the cast going forward to Tokyo, and hopeful for many more musicals to come!

Disco Elysium creative team VS Studio ZA/UM: the complete(?) timeline (updated on March 24th)

Recent news confused a lot of people, including me, so I made a timeline of events to understand the situation better! If you have any corrections, more info and sources feel free to reach out to me or add to this post!

Important parts are highlighted in orange, names and organizations to keep in mind are in italics, the newest corrections and updates are highlighted in green, other information elaborating on the situation is in (brackets).

October 1st, 2022. Martin Luiga puts out a Medium post announcing the dissolution of ZA/UM cultural association and confirming that Kurvitz, Hindpere, Rostov no longer work at ZA/UM studio "since the end of last year and their leaving the company was involuntary."

October 3rd 2022. Kotaku published an article, claiming "the studio hasn’t been transparent about what exactly happened with staff either." According to "two sources familiar with the situation, the studio’s internal announcement of Kurvitz’s departure late last year [2021] also contained a threat of possible legal action against him. Any split would have been made messier by Kurvitz and Rostov being shareholders in the studio, the sources said. It’s also clear ZA/UM has gone out of its way to try and keep the situation quiet. Kotaku reached out for an interview with Kurvitz in February [2022]. The studio declined on his behalf, but provided no indication the developer had already left the company." Kotaku also mentions a tweet from Martin Luiga announcing the dissolution of ZA/UM cultural association. One of Martin's tweets (further elaborating on the dissolution) was quote tweeted by user nob69691 with caption "the suits have killed disco", to which he responded with pictures of the game’s executive producers, Tõnis Haavel and Kaur Kender.

October 25th, 2022. Kotaku Australia reports Kurvitz’s company, Telomer, has filed an application against Studio ZA/UM to "obtain information and review documents." Court date is listed as November 28th, 2022.

Kotaku also reached out to Martin Luiga for a comment; when asked if the case’s purpose was to regain control of the Elysium IP, he responded, “What else could it possibly be?”

November 9th, 2022. Studio ZA/UM puts out a statement detailing the dismissed employees (unnamed) "had limited to no engagement in their responsibilities and work, created a toxic work environment, demonstrated misconduct towards other employees including verbal abuse and gender discrimination, and attempted to illegally sell ZA/UM's intellectual property".

In an Estonian newspaper, Estonian Ekspress, ZA/UM CEO Ilmar Kompus has further accused Kurvitz and shareholder Saandar Taal (Rostov's alias) of "humiliating colleagues and intending to steal IP" as well as "belittling women and co-workers."

Kompus added that their dismissal was demanded and carried out by Kaur Kender, executive producer on Disco Elysium and their direct manager at the time. Kender was placed on a leave of absence on medical grounds in late August according to Kompus.

Speaking to the Estonian Ekspress, Martin Luiga said he was "driven to drink by the unnatural work arrangement" at the studio. "The work was organised in such a way that the goal did not seem to be to make games, but rather to make people quarrel with each other."

(I am also adding anonymous claims, take them with a grain of salt)

One source that spoke to GamesIndustry.biz, who asked to remain anonymous, described the situation as "not black and white," and said that long-term staff were reluctant to speak out about Kurvitz’ behaviour because they respected him, and felt like they owed him for their positions. Sources that spoke to the Estonian Ekspress described a clash of two visions between the business team of ZA/UM led by Kompus, and the creative team formerly headed by Robert Kurvitz, which considered profit "secondary." This was corroborated by our sources, one of which described the situation as "CEO corporate scheming on one side, a toxic auteur on the other."

On the same day, Kurvitz and Rostov shared a Medium post explaining their side. Kurvitz and Rostov are minority shareholders in Studio ZA/UM, while "the majority of this company’s shares were initially held by Margus Linnamäe, who provided the initial capital. In 2021, Linnamäe was bought out by another minority shareholder," a company called Tütreke. They say this company "is a vehicle for two Estonian businessmen — Ilmar Kompus and Tõnis Haavel." Kurvitz and Rostov described Linnamäe as a trusted majority shareholder, but didn't share the same sentiment regarding Kompus and Haavel. "As soon as they became majority shareholders, we were quickly excluded from daily operations, our employment was terminated and our access to the company’s information was shut off. Our firing came weeks after we started asking for documents and financial data, which is still being kept from us. We have now learned that Tütreke OÜ must have obtained control over Zaum Studio OÜ by fraud. We believe the money used by Tütreke OÜ to buy the majority stake was taken illegally from Zaum Studio OÜ itself".

Studio ZA/UM denied any claims of fraud and insisted that dismissal of wokers "was a decision that had to be taken for the wellbeing of the collective."

Correction: Ilmar Kompus's statement came out first on Estonian Ekspress on November 8th 2022 21:06. His statement and Studio ZA/UM's statement given to GameIndustry.biz were reproduced and published in a GameIndustry.biz report on November 9th. Rostov and Kurvitz's Medium statement came out later on November 9th. GameIndustry.biz report added an excerpt from Medium on November 10th. (i used Wayback Machine to check this, the report was updated between 11:08 and 11:53)

November 9th 2022. Kotaku puts out an article, summarizing the above statments from Studio ZA/UM, Kompus, Kurvitz and Rostov. "When asked by Kotaku, a spokesperson for ZA/UM declined to elaborate beyond its original statement [about dismissal of employees over misconduct], including whether the allegations also applied to Rostov as well as Helen Hindpere."

23rd of November, 2022. PC Gamer reports a hearing was held in Harju County Court in October, where Kurvitz and Rostov argued that Kompus had allegedly sold four concept sketches (for Disco Elysium sequel), to Tütreke for just over €1 and then immediately bought them back for €4.8 million using Studio ZA/UM's money. This amount is what was apparently used to buy Linnamäe's large stake, and put it in the hands of Kompus. "Kompus allegedly hoped that ZA/UM and Disco Elysium could be resold quickly. [...] But there remained a problem: Robert Kurvitz is the creator of Disco Elysium, still owns a piece of it, and has the right to block any acquisition."

The latest legal battle was lodged by Kaur Kender, executive producer and marketing manager of the game, "who claimed in court that Kompus cheated him out of just under €1,000,000." At Kender's request, the court seized Kompus' stake in Studio ZA/UM to prevent a sale or transfer of holdings during the proceedings.

Haavel is also accused in the lawsuit of following Kompus' actions. The filing pointed out that the holder of the IP rights to Disco Elysium is a subsidiary called YESSIRNOSIR LTD, which is owned by ZA/UM UK. The director of ZA/UM UK is Anu Reiman, who is also reportedly a partner of Haavel's. Kender claims that Haavel's involvement is being "kept secret" because he's €11.2 million in debt as a result of his 2015 conviction.

Speaking to the Estonian Ekspress, Kompus denied the existence of a lawsuit against him, and Haavel called the allegations "completely absurd." Both were shown legal documents by the outlet and did not respond.

December 8th, 2022. According to GamesIndustry.biz article, Kaur Kender has withdrawn a lawsuit against Tütreke.

Studio ZA/UM provided a statement from Kompus, but could not provide a reason for Kender's withdrawal. Kompus says: "We are pleased that Kender and his attorneys have chosen to withdraw their lawsuit – one that should never have been filed in the first place. Their decision affirms there was no basis for their accusations and that I have acted appropriately and responsibly, as underscored by the corporate records I provided."

The article also mentions Studio ZA/UM was unable to provide an update on the suit's progression against Kurvitz's company, Telomer.

PC Gamer reached for comment, Kender stated that his lawsuit against the owner of Studio ZA/UM proved to be successful and provided a timeline of the lawsuit:

Kaur Kender's (his company, Chromed Investing OÜ) lawsuit against the owner of Zaum Studio OÜ proved to be successful.

On October 25, 2022, Kaur Kender's company filed a lawsuit against OÜ Tütreke (Ilmar Kompus company), in which was demanded the seizure of Zaum Studio OÜ's share belonging to OÜ Tütreke.

On October 29, 2022, the Estonian court secured the action and shares belonging to OÜ Tütreke were seized.

On October 31, 2022, the order securing the action was forwarded to Nasdaq and the Estonian Business Register.

On November 1, 2022, Kaur Kender sent a letter in English to contacts, including Ilmar Kompus and Tõnis Haavel, stating that the minority shareholders demand the convening of a general meeting.

On November 4, 2022, Ilmar Kompus' company OÜ Tütreke paid a total of 4 million euros to Zaum Studios OÜ in two payments.

On November 11, 2022, Ilmar Kompus' company OÜ Tütreke paid 800,000 euros to ZA/UM Studios OÜ.

Ilmar Kompus referred in the corresponding payment orders: "Return of the amounts received on the basis of the contract on 12.2021-01.2022 due to the nullity of the contract".

To the extent that Ilmar Kompus returned the illegally taken 4,800,000 euros, Kaur Kender achieved the goal of the lawsuit filed, and the court proceedings in this case will be terminated.

PC Gamer also provided commentary and an excerpt from Estonian Ekspress: "Eesti Ekspress reports that Kompus "paid back" €4.8 million to Studio ZA/UM in November. The outlet says that the reason provided for the transaction was that the €4.8 million "was received on the basis of a void transaction." Eesti Ekspress points out that Kompus "controls both sides" of that void transaction. [...] By now transferring €4.8 million to the company to repay it for a "void transaction," the intended message seems to be that he didn't use company money to buy his shares. But why did he have the €4.8 million in the first place?"

Robert Kurvitz told PC Gamer that his party is aware of "Kompus’s view that the money taken from ZA/UM Studio was 'repaid'." Kurvitz says he's seen a "partial bank statement allegedly confirming such repayment," but remains unclear on the "source and legal nature of this repayment, and the further use of the allegedly repaid funds."

"Further, any 'repayment' of the company’s money which was used to illegally acquire a majority stake does not erase the main consequence of the initial injustice⁠—which is that Kompus remains the majority owner, a position that he was only able to attain by using the company’s money as his own," said Kurvitz. "In light of this, there has been no material change in our situation, and we continue to consider our legal options. We cannot comment on the decisions taken by Kaur Kender with regard to his claim, to which we were never a party."

March 14, 2023. GamesIndustry.biz reports legal dispute between Studio ZA/UM and the game's producer Kaur Kender has been resolved.

"ZA/UM has announced that ex-staffer Kender has repaid all debts owed to it. Also, per a court order, Kender has repaid CEO Ilmar Kompus for legal fees from a lawsuit that was eventually withdrawn back in December. Additionally, he's divested all his shares in the games company.

Studio ZA/UM says both Kurvitz and Rostov have dropped their "unfair dismissal" claims due to lack of evidence. However, the company says it continues to face a "series of baseless allegations from former employees" and expects more claims to "fall apart under legal and factual scrutiny."

March 16, 2023. In a statement sent to GamesIndustry.biz, Kurvitz and Taal (alias for Aleksander Rostov) said the press release is false in multiple areas. The pair maintain they are the remaining minority shareholders of the studio. The developers explained, "The press release implies that our employment claims against the studio were withdrawn for lack of evidence. They were not. We see our dismissal as part of a larger campaign against us and will pursue legal options accordingly." The statement adds that they disagreed with Kender admitting the lawsuit he withdrew in December 2022 was misguided.

"Kender's lawsuit was based on the misuse of ZA/UM's funds (€4.8 million) by the majority shareholders [Ilmar Kompus and Tõnis Haavel] to increase their own stake in the company. In the press release, Kompus and Haavel admit to this misuse, arguing only that the money has been 'paid back to ZA/UM,' " the duo explained.

"Paying back stolen money, however, does not undo the crime; here, it does not undo the majority that Kompus and Haavel have illegally gained in ZA/UM."

Additionally, they described that, unlike Kender, they will not be silenced in this ongoing legal dispute. "Unlike Kender, we have not participated in the looting of ZA/UM, and Kompus and Haavel have no power over us."

March 23rd 2023. GamesIndustry.biz updates initial post with a reply statment from ZA/UM. The studio reiterated that Kender admitted that the lawsuit was misguided on his part. It said, "In addition, as part of a court order, he also paid the legal fees for CEO Ilmar Kompus, who had to respond to that now-withdrawn claim." ZA/UM adds, "Using details like 'looting,' 'stolen money,' and 'crime' make for riveting reading but are far from reality. The actual harm to the studio is not from some fictional 'looting,' but rather from Mr. Kurvitz and Mr. Taal, while employed by the studio, refusing to do their jobs, creating a toxic workplace, demeaning colleagues, and attempting to misappropriate Studio IP."

Additionally, the studio explained that Kurvitz and Taal are welcome to challenge these facts in court.

You look around the room filled with Detroit residents, mostly those residing on the north side but it was a good mixture nonetheless. A lot of arguments and fighting to get to this moment. Oasis was finally open. Another bar/lounge but this was more upscale. Small bites and charcuterie boards. It served as a 3rd space for the immediate community and a cool hang out spot for adults in the greater community. A bite off the speakeasy vibe with secret menus and drinks. Guests were here to get a taste of what the place had to offer.

You had done your fair share of mingling and hosting, speaking to the inspiration, and sales pitching the space to the guests invited. It was exhausting. This was a long day from 5:00am to now and it wasn’t even midnight yet, (midnight was still 3 hours away).

Rio and Nick showed up not as family but as two unassuming guests. Of course Nick had to put his mayoral stamp of approval. They should have just arrived as a family the way they couldn’t stay away from each other was comical.

After another sales pitch speech to 3 couples you spot Rio by the bar. Sitting staring straight ahead and even the people trying to interact with him were quickly walking away.

“You look nice” you compliment him. A forest green turtle neck with gold chain and trench coat. He nods in response “You know its poor host manners to not interact with your guests” you lean in closer “you need to mingle with our customers” you whisper teasing

He turns to face you a deep mug on his face “not in the mood Y/N” he speaks before turning to face the bar again

You take a step back “Whoa, what's wrong? You ok?” you ask

“Nothing” he answers

You don’t need a neon sign to see he would like to be left alone. “Okay....” “Y/N?” you hear your name being called making both of you look towards the direction. It was your ex Isaias.

“Y/N! It is you!” He steps closer leaning in for a hug which makes you move back quickly inadvertently running straight into Rio.

“Hey Isaias” you say waving as you try to maneuver around Rio but he has you trapped between his legs

“It’s nice to see you!” he gestures towards you “I didn’t think you would be here!”

“Yea me either” you look down and notice the very precarious situation you were in and try to move away from Rio only for him to hold onto the belt of your dress trapping you. You freeze. This is not where you wanted to be. You try to turn and face Rio to figure out what he was up to but Isaias keeps talking

“So what are you doing here?” “Oh I came for the launch” He motions around the room “You had a hand in this?” “Uh no not really. I was just consulting you know”

He looks at you sympathetically with a small frown on his face “Sorry about the bar” “It’s okay we rebuilt and we are honoring Gracie as much as we can”

There was an awkward silence “You look great!” he compliments “Same to you thanks”

He looks past you “Oh I’m sorry I’m Isaias.” he extends his hand

“Oh silly me” You try to use this as an opportunity to move but Rio holds you in place so the best you can do is lean out of the way “This is.....” “Rio” he answers for you

“Isaias” they shake hands

“Yea” you giggle nervously

“Y/N I wanted to talk to you about something”

You take a sip of your drink “Okay”

He chuckles nervously “So I’m opening up my own bar”

“Oh nice!”

“And I know you know alot about hops”

You shake your head “Mmm no I don't” you knew where this was going. This is how it always went with Isaias a compliment followed by him siphoning your ideas your thoughts to make him look good

“Y/N” you hear your name

You whip your head to the sound “Yes!”

“Sorry” the waitress looks apologetically “can you help me with something?”

“Absolutely excuse me” you speak as you maneuver out of Rios’s grip “Excuse me gotta go, talk to you later Isaias.” You turn to face the waitress “Yes, what do you need?” you ask as you both head back into the kitchen.

You hide in the kitchen for at least 30 minutes before you make your way out. This time you were well aware of where Isaias was and you were avoiding being detected by him at all costs.

“You two make a cute couple” an older woman speaks to you as she approaches you

“I’m sorry?” You were confused

She motions behind you “You and him” you turn to see her motioning at Rio “I saw it all happen, him protecting you from what I assume was your ex?” You begin to blush “oh uhhh” you hated being perceived

“Sorry didn’t mean to infringe, these drinks are good” blaming the alcohol “Oh I uh....thanks” is all you could muster up to say before you hurriedly changed the subject

The night ends and you usher the guests out leaving you Rio and Nick while the staff cleaned up.

“So that was a success” you beam

“It was! Good job Y/N” Nick compliments putting his hand on your shoulder

You smile and nod Nick looks at Rio who’s eyes are trained on Nick's hand on you. “My bad brother” he chuckles raising his hands in a surrender motion, Rio scoffs in return.

“Y/N” Another call for help “Yea? Excuse me guys”

“This is Adriana, you will be working with her now.” Rio states “Okay” you say looking at the woman standing next to him

“You two will be working together on cleaning up my money” You nod in response. “Any questions?” You shake your head and hand him the bag while Adriana hands you her bag. He doesn’t say anything else, just walks away and you turn around to do the same.

Dealing with Adriana could either be a blessing or a curse, initially things went smoothly until they weren’t.

“You think you’re so special”

“What is it now?” you ask her irritated

“All he does is ask how you are when I drop off the money” You roll your eyes “I have already heard this you can tell him to stop you know” you didn’t even know why he was asking about you, he could just call you or pop up and you’ve told her that many times. “I did pendejo” “You can call me whatever you want but I’m busy and so are you so lets get this exchange over with... Plus don’t you want to go prepare to celebrate valentines with someone special?” you add in the last line as a sting to her very open wound. The amount of times she tried to connect over wanting a man made you physically ill

She scoffs and you both exchange the bags

Monday February 14, 2022

You were working at Oasis, the bar was extremely busy tonight, you had to make it a reservations only night and couples who did pop up had a minimum of an 2 hours wait even at the bar. Small bites intended for feeding each other with desserts meant to end the night with a perfect kiss.

“What are you doing here?” you ask Rio who was sitting by the bar

He smiles to himself “what I can’t spend valentines in the most requested place in Detroit?”

“No” you respond flatly you didn’t want him there observing you it made you even more nervous. Like he was taking notes to bring up later like a health inspector or food critic

“Hey!” you hear from behind you it was Adriana

“Oh heyyy!”

She slides onto the barstool next to Rio “I asked for the Strawberry Ricotta Bruschetta bites and the Stuffed Mushrooms like 20 minutes ago!”

You bite back a laugh (finally he took her out on a date, cheap bastard brought her here where he basically won’t have to pay) “Let me go look into that, is there anything else you need?”

She looks at Rio “need anything boo?”

Rio shakes his head and takes a sip of his drink, you couldn't tell if he was enjoying his date or hating it he was very stoic.

You nod in return and make a quick exit to the kitchen where you let out all of your laughter before you personally deliver the food ordered to them. You make it a point to be the only one to serve them that night.

“Food could have been a little better, let me give you a tip a little less......" she remains quiet thinking "salt and spice”

You smile “noted”

“Same for the desserts you know you wanna find that right balance between too sweet and just right”

“Got it!”

She links arms with Rio “Anyway thanks for the Valentines, sad you had to work” She fake pouts “maybe next year”

“Maybe, see you guys later”

Friday April 1, 2022

Things got better with Adriana after that. All she talked about was the Valentine's date for a while then onto another date, this time emphasizing just how good Rio was in bed.

“Did you fuck him?”

“Excuse me?!” “My man” “Who is?” she had stopped talking about Rio recently She mugged you “Bitch don’t play dumb” “Rio?”

“Who the fuck else!?” “No I didn’t” “Then why the fuck is he talking about you?”

You shrug “i honestly don’t know”

“Yea okay let me find out you fucked him”

“Then what?”

She looked back at you shocked, “What you say?”

“Then what?”

“You’ll see” she threatened

You shrug and walk away. You didn’t have time for this as you were split between two places today, this was not a welcomed surprise.

At 2 in the morning you finally pulled into your driveway and sat there for what felt like forever. After 20 minutes of playing on your phone and convincing yourself that it will not be 1. Safe nor 2. Comfortable to sleep in your car you take the painful steps into your home.

“Think I’ve told you many times sitting in your car isn’t safe” you hear his voice before the lamp turns on

It scares you, he hasn’t popped up in a long time you were getting used to him not doing it

“Thanks for the reminder, what do you want?” you scan the room and Mick is just around the corner lurking “Hi Mick” he doesn’t respond but steps into the now lit room

He stands up walking up to you “rumor is you shorting me”

“Is this some April fools thing?” you ask failing to hold back a laugh. First Adriana then this?

That anger that you had forgotten resurfaced and like last time you find yourself in a very bad situation “does it look like an April fools joke to you?” his hand with a vice grip on the back of your neck

Your mouth goes dry and your body tenses up immediately your mind flashes back to the past and without you being able to control it tears roll down your face

As an act of regret Rio loosens his grip not letting you go but studying you, he stays like that for awhile before stepping back completely

“Adriana’s been giving me bags that are short on my cash even when she goes to pick them up with someone they are always short. So you tell me how she’s giving you all that money to wash and your short by 1/3”

“I...I...I” your mind goes blank of course its false why would you want to be back in this very situation

“One of you is lying and since I got my men to join her then it can only be you”

You look at him the migraine radiating from your neck was getting worse

“You better start talking darling”

“I...I...I don’t....know”

“That’s all you got for me?” Tears roll down your eyes and nod that's all you could muster up to say at the moment

He looks to Mick who reveals the duffle bag behind his back “I took what is owed plus interest”

Wednesday April 20, 2022

“Authorities are warning people to be mindful on their intake of marijuana today as they see a spike in emergency room visits and accidents during what is known as 4/20 holiday for frequent pot smokers. Please keep in mind if you are found with marijuana or illegal substances you will be arrested. Stay safe Detroit! Onto other news authorities have found the body of a female and a male in the early hours of Monday April 18 it is unclear...”

“Thanks for meeting with me” Nick says as he slides into his seat

“No problem” your neck tenses up again and there is the migraine you grimace in pain

“You okay?”

You nod “neck hurts”

“So how have you been?” “What do you want Nick? You don’t care about my well being” “Actually! I do! Because you are one of our loyal partners!”

You respond with a tight lipped smile

“As a token of our appreciation we are giving you this!” he hands you the duffle bag full of money “for you”

“What is this?”

“I just said”

“I don’t want it” you shove it back to him

“No cariño its yours, you earned it”

“I could just leave it here and let someone take it” “You could but your fingerprints are on the envelopes sooo”

You stare at him for a minute before you put the pieces together, you chuckle to yourself “what are you paying me back?”

“No in fact what I am doing is fixing what my brother wronged, found out Adriana started sleeping with his men many so there goes the mystery of you coming up short”

You nod and look away remembering that night

You both sit in silence for a while. It was awkward at the beginning but then faded away. You avoided eye contact

“You okay?” he finally asks

“Yea yea” you say wiping away the few tears “anything else”

“................He likes you, you know?”

You guaff “Yea as much as he likes his money!”

“Not like that this is different”

You hum and nod “mhmmmm” in response sarcastically not believing anything he said

“I’m serious!” “Well at least we know he loves you or you would be dead” you say

He laughs, throwing his head back “nah he can’t kill me that's the difference? You.......... he won’t” He analyzes you “wonder what it is?”

You roll your eyes “That doesn’t mean he likes me as you're trying to infer here, I’m not special”

“Ha! try telling him that!” He stands up and walks away.

You sit there for a while gathering your thoughts before you too get up and leave.

Finally the warm weather was breaking in Detroit and you felt comfortable enough to leave your home with a light sweater and not layer up. You pull into the driveway and look at the Orchard Lake Country Club building, you were so busy you failed to realize where you were going instead copying and pasting the address into your phone to lead you towards the meeting point.

Good thing you were starting with Oasis today or you would have showed up in a t-shirt, jeans, and sneakers.

You check your phone one last time to ensure this was indeed the place besides the GPS telling you your destination was 0.1 miles to the left you were in the right spot.

“Hi how can I help you?” the front desk attendant speaks

You adjust the duffle bag “I’m meeting with Christopher Serraño” “Oh yes he is in the tennis court, he asked me to have you wait in the restaurant”

“Okay” you say as she walks you over to the outside seating area. You watched as he played a round of double tennis only sipping on the water that was provided and responding to texts.

When he spots you he waves you over but you don’t think he is talking about you so you look behind you and he it makes him chuckle when you realize he is talking to you. You pick up the duffle bag. He motions with his hand to put it down “leave it!” he tries to yell over the music but you can’t hear so you just take it with you

“I was telling you to leave it” he finally speaks smiling at you. You hadn't seen him since April 1st so you guess seeing a smile on his face was a good sign

“Oh uh I couldn’t hear” you explain

He nods taking a big swig of water “it’s cool”

The silence is awkward between you. You knew it was his guilty conscious that kept him from seeing you but a lousy sorry would suffice to get over whatever this was

“Right so here” you say handing him the bag

He smiles taking it from you. Either this was new or you’re just now noticing how he takes the bag from you. This time you feel his hand grazing your thumb caressing yours before he grabs the bag.

You retract your hand quickly, instinctively, there was something intimate about it. It shocked you.

He ignores your reaction and turns to look at the tennis court before facing you “Played tennis before?”

You look at the court “No, I don't know how. But you’re pretty good”

He smiles “I can teach you!”

“Now?”

He shrugs “Why not? What you got going on?”

“Oh...uhhh..I....I..” you motion to your attire taking a few steps back “I didn’t know I don’t have any clothes” “They got a shop” he points behind him “go pick up what you want they can put it on my account”

“I...uhhhmmm...I have to work Rio” you say rubbing the back of your neck

“You good?” he looks slightly concerned

“Yea just a migraine coming on gotta take my meds plus I gotta go they need help tonight” He nods “See you later” you didn’t wait for another statement another question.

Update - 3rd year anniversary! (and some future plans, a reflection, etc.)

Hi everyone! π here.

By the time this post is up, it'll be the 13th of May. Three years since I began my writing journey and this Tumblr blog. Three years. Time flies by so fast. I was close to graduating senior high after it was delayed because pandemic, had my graduation in an empty room basically, now I'm hitting my third year of college. Crazy stuff.

With that said, here are the stats + timetable of the blog so far:

From this point, this part will be an overall reflection and life summary of the previous year, my thoughts on some personal matters, and some ideas I've been contemplating. If you don't wanna read this, you can stop here.

I miss 2023 quite a bit, not gonna lie. I know nostalgia can quickly grow warm and fuzzy, seeing the past through rose tinted lens, but I'll admit that 2024 hasn't been off to the start I envisioned it to be. That year was mostly peak for me, and I could even argue it's my favorite year to live out based on all my experiences. Traveling to new places, finally attending live events, interacting with my K-pop biases, and so on—it really felt like the best was yet to come with how 2023 flowed and transitioned into the new year.

Five months in, and I am struggling. Horribly. Most plans, dreams, and ideas have gone up in smoke, and it's just one devastating gut punch after another. I have a shitty professor in one major that basically made me check out of that class, and I don't know my family will react when I tell them I have to repeat said class because that professor was a dick. My family's been infighting on a daily basis, and I'm mostly collateral damage to them. Not one week can go by without some serious confrontation between them. There was a brief health scare with my mother, but that seems to be a nothing matter; thank God she'll be okay.

All this just makes life so deflating, in all honesty. I get that no life is without struggle, but I genuinely don't know when we'll be in the clear. Not anytime soon, I reckon. In these tough times, there's very little comfort except the past, when everything was pretty all right for the most part. It's been demotivating to write when mom comes forward with another grievance with my sister. It's hard to write when you have a professor who likes to power trip their students into submission. It's hard when you don't know how to admit to your mother that he failed his one class because of said power tripping professor.

But that doesn't mean I will let it eat me alive. I know we've been through some utter lows in the past. And we always get back up. If no one has us, then God does.

Summer break is fast approaching and I want to fix things. Even in my own little way. I know none of what I'm saying has anything to do with writing degenerate stories about hot K-pop idols, but real life circumstances have definitely affected me more than I can brush off. I should be calm, unfazed, undeterred.

After all, some stories are meant to be finished. They just take a more unconventional route. Ask Cody.

With all that being said, I will finish these commissions over the next two months. I'm really sorry to everyone who requested and paid for their stories months and months ago; I genuinely feel bad for not getting these out on time, but I am very mindful of quality control, and I have no one to blame but myself for being a slacker and lazy worker. Despite my feelings, I should remain professional—that's what being a worker means.

A lifestyle overhaul is definitely in my list of things to improve over the summer too. Figuring out how to get writing done, finding ways to alleviate my PokeRogue addiction (GOTY), whilst having a healthy work/life balance and not losing my sanity over it. Or worse, burning out.

And I want to take this opportunity to thank all my friends—peach, caps, majorblinks, chunk, frisky, raf, c.o, levi, sins, iz, ken, v1n, ddeun, notions, kevin, eros, brandon, kaede, svn, frisky, cray, rpg, prael—for putting up with my shit for another year. This life is tough, but you guys make it tolerable. Thank you for letting me air out my grievances even when it wasn't the best time to. I pray that when everything passes, I'm able to repay you all in some shape or form generously.

And to you, dear reader, for making it this far, thank you. Whether you've been with me since day one, or day 1094, as a commenter, reposter, liking, or just passing by/lurking, thank you for giving me a chance. Without you, all of this would have been for nothing. I don't know where I would be now if I didn't take that chance, that leap of faith back in 2021, and it's because of you I am able to keep doing this for the love of the game.
