Oamenii de stiinta au descoperit FOSILA unui ornitorinc urias, veche de 15 milioane de ani!
Oamenii de stiinta americani si australieni au descoperit in Australia, fosila unui ornitorinc urias, care se hranea cu broaste-testoase.
Acest ornitorinc carnivor, care a trait cu 5 – 15 milioane de ani in urma si a fost numit “Obdurodon tharalkooschild”, avea, ca si specia din prezent, un bot turtit ca un cioc de rata, blana groasa si labe asemanatoare cu cele ale unui castor.
Ornitorincul urias masura in jur de un metru, fiind de doua ori mai mare decat rudele sale contemporane.
Specia a fost identificata pornindu-se de la un molar descoperit de Rebecca Pian, doctoranda la Universitatea Columbia din New York, in situl fosilifer din Riversleigh, in statul australian Queensland.
“Descoperirea acestei noi specii a fost un soc pentru noi, deoarece, pana acum, fosilele pe care le aveam la dispozitie indicau faptul ca arborele genealogic al ornitorincilor era relativ liniar. Acum stim ca existau ramuri laterale ale acestui arbore, printre care cea a unei specii uriase”, intr-o epoca in care se credea ca ornitorincii erau mult mai mici si nu aveau dinti, a precizat Michael Archer, de la Universitatea New South Wales.

CONOCE AL ORNITORRINCO GIGANTE
Hasta el momento, el registro fósil indicaba que el linaje del ornitorrinco era único, con una sola especie en cualquier época de su existencia. Esta imagen ha cambiado con la publicación de un estudio esta semana en el Journal of Vertebrate Paleontology que describe una nueva especie de ornitorrinco gigante (Obdurodon tharalkooschild) extinto, una rama desconocida del árbol genealógico de estos animales, que tendría dos veces el tamaño de los actuales. Habitaba Australia hace entre 15 y 5 millones de años.
