For those following the annual March Mammal Madness event on Twitter, I was invited by event creator Katie Hinde to make an updated phylogeny poster including every life form that has ever competed in the tournament. Over 600 different species (not all of them mammals) have been in March Mammal Madness so far. Can you find your favorite?

Nicobar pigeon - Caolenas nicobarica 

Near threatened

The nicobar pigeon lives on the Andaman and Nicobar islands in India, east through the Malay archipelago to the Solomons and Palau. They consume primarily seeds, fruit, buds, and occasionally insects. These birds are the closest living relative to the dodo. They are grayish-blue in color, with an iridescent body in many different colors.

They are primarily threatened by hunting and deforestation.

Hey folks! Just wanted to put in here that as a person in the animal care industry and also a resident science nerd I will be participating in my favorite holiday MMM! Which is March Mammal Madness! It’s similar to March madness but with animals, real science, and a randomness factor that attempts to emulate real life wackiness. Throughout the month of March I will be participating and updating my MMM bracket!

The total number of points you can earn is 138 so I’m making twitch goals based on how many points I earn this year!

20 points - I make a drawing of my icon that will be displayed on stream!

45 points - drunk pals world smash or pass (I have never seen any of them before)

69 points - stuffed animal review stream. (Basically I take pictures of my stuffed animals and date them as if I’m a fashion expert commenting on red carpet looks)

83 points - I have to speak in rhyme for an entire stream. No exceptions. (No silence lasting longer than 6 seconds)

100 points - drunk karaoke but I have to sing in a terrible Kermit the frog impression OR other impressions as suggested by anyone (as long as I can reasonably attempt it)

125 points - i’ll play a 30 turn board of Mario Party DS with only one hand, all coms on hard, and a 2 star handicap. If I lose the board my best friend @ollysoxisfree will come up with a suitable punishment for me to take.

I’ll be posting my personal bracket on here shortly (I’m still filling it out *kisses*) and feel free to compare your bracket to mine!

7th grade me hated March Mammal Madness so much because of how situational it is. Like if there was a fight between a hamster and an orca, the hamster would win because oh no, the orca fell asleep and got crushed by a boulder. Fuck you, MMM.

 Indian gray mongoose - Herpestes edwardsi 

Least concern

The Indian gray mongoose is a species of mongoose living in Turkey, the Arabian Peninsula, India, Bhutan, and Bangladesh. They are omnivores, opportunistic hunters who consume rats, mice, lizards, snakes, and beetles, as well as fruit, berries, and roots. Their bodies contain glycoprotein, which bonds to venom when they are bitten in order to reduce the effects. 

They have a grayish coat, with lighter hairs dispersed over a darker base color. They have a brown underbelly and darker paws.
