anyway details of this au under the cut because i wrote a lot 🫶🫶🫶

i think itd be common for firefighters to have a personal water-type that they take with them to fires to help out. bobby has a poliwrath that he got as a polywag when he first moved to la, chimney has a psyduck, hen has a marill, buck has a squirtle, eddie has a gyrados and a vaporeon. specifically eddies vaporeon was an eevee that shannon got around the time eddie was discharged from the military, with the intention of it being a family pet, and she left it with eddie and chris when she moved to la. christopher and eddie talked about if they wanted to evolve her (i just decided the vaporeon is a girl) and what they should evolve her into, they agreed on vaporeon.

also i dont think many of the characters would be trainers and do much actual battling, mostly keeping pokemon as pets or to help with their jobs, but i think buck was a pretty successful trainer and collected gym badges from different states when he was traveling in his 20s. his squirtle is pretty new and young, he didnt get it until he was a firefighter for a few years and decided he wanted a water type like everyone else. other than his squirtle, he has an eevee (that hes scared to let evolve because the amount of choices is overwhelming and he likes the idea that it has the potential to be anything), an arcanine, a luxray, a raichu, and a mareep, (arcanine luxray and raichu are pretty high levels, hes had them the longest)

i also think christopher from a really young age would be really really interested in being a trainer, so when eddie comes home from the military and its just him and chris, he takes chris with him to do battles and gyms together as a way to earn money while also spending quality time with chris. other than his vaporeon and gyrados,(which he and chris got as a magikarp probably won as a prize in some carnival or fair, goldfish style) he has an ursaring, a lucario, an absol, a gengar, a munchlax, and a skitty. (skitty and munchlax dont really battle much he just thinks theyre cute and likes having them around) around the time chris is 11 or 12 and ready to start his own pokemon journey, buck takes up a sort of mentor position for him since hes the most experienced trainer of the group. (eventually chris would start collecting his own pokemon instead of just battling alongside his dad but i havent gotten that far yet and i really should be asleep instead of typing all this out)

as for chim and hen, they have a plusle and minun (chim has minun hen has plusle) chim i think is in 3rd place when in comes to amount of experience pokemon training among the 118, he did it as a hobby and to earn a little money before becoming a firefighter, he gets back into it later because buck complains that his pokemon are getting bored since he started firefighting, and he wants to teach chris, so he wants to get back into it but more casually, he eddie and chim start battling for fun in their free time (sometimes bobby begrudgingly agrees to battle, mostly because poliwrath seems interested and hes incapable of saying no to his beloved partner pokemon). anyway chim other than his psyduck and minun, has an abra, a chikorita (he got shortly after buck got him back into battling), a murkrow, and a bewear. (he and murkrow have a sort of adversarial frenemy relationship but they still love each other 🫶)

hen has aforementioned marill and plusle, she has a vulpix, and oddish, and a chansey (which helps her with peoples injuries on calls) and her karen and denny for a while have a herdier that she saved from an earthquake 🫶

maddie i think likes collecting cute pokemon after she comes to la, she has a cubone, a dratini, a teddiursa, and a floatzel (the floatzel was an egg buck was given by another trainer, he leveled it up and gave it to maddie to protect her, mainly to put his own mind at ease but she appreciates it and her and floatzel become really close)

anyway thats all i have i will probably also come up with what pokemon christopher and athena would have but athena is a toughy because she is a cop (cops in pokemon usually have arcanines) but she is allergic to dogs and i am not about to retcon that so i have to come up with something else anyway there is no point to any of this im just having fun. ok. send post

my brain is constantly in random au hell forever. im coming up with a 911 pokemon au currently. no reason why. just for fun i guess

Time only has Twilight, Warriors, and Sky's numbers, and their contact names are all just their actual names. Like, last names included. He's 46 he's not making his contact names all fancy, and the pfps he has for each of them are literally pictures of a physical photo he took so he'd have a picture to put there

Warriors's phone:

Time: 'Mr. Forrester', because he is slightly scared of offending Time somehow and is always just super respectful to him. He's the only father figure War has EVER had, and he's really scared of fucking up and losing that. No contact pic

Twilight: 'husband (derogatory)', the contact pic is a REALLY bad screenshot of Jacob Black from the Twilight movies

Sky: 'husband (affectionate)', and the contact pic is Sky upside down grinning like he's an extra in a horror movie who’s been possessed or something

Hyrule: 'Rock Enthusiast', very fitting. The contact pic is a rock with googly eyes

Legend: Ledge -> Edge -> 'Edgy', and the pfp is Legend with his bangs swept across his forehead with a filter on it that really just screams 2013 emo

Wild: 'wife (neutral)', and the picture is them from when they were like ten and eleven. They're both really fucking adorable in the pic

Four: '4', Warriors is not creative. No contact pic

Wind: 'Wind', but the contact pic is batshit enough to make up for it. It's him jumping on War's back when he CLEARLY had not been expecting it, so his eyes are bugging out of his head and Wind is still half flying through the air and Hyrule, Legend, Four, Twilight, and Sky literally look like the five stages of grief in the back

(bonus) Athena: 'Pookie', his contact name in her phone is the same. They are not dating, she's a lesbian and he's a gay man they will never date, but the contact pic is her kissing his cheek and every single time he has his phone down and she calls and the pfp takes up the whole screen, at least ONE person goes "AWWW IS THAT YOUR GIRLFRIEND????" and he just thinks its funny at this point. Her pfp for him is, again, the EXACT same pic

Twilight's phone:

Time: 'Dad', the pfp is them fishing together from when Twi was like, 13. He looks at that pic a lot when he misses him

Warriors: 'Warp', and the pic is War twisted into a terrifying position. It's the other half of the pic of WAR'S contact pic for SKY, they were trying to spook Twi and he got a picture of them acting like idiots instead

Sky: It's just 'Sky', and the pic is the same one War has as his contact pic for Sky

Hyrule: 'Rulie', and it's a picture of Hyrule LITERALLY eating dirt. Like not tripping and eating shit, he has a paper plate with dirt on it and he's pretending like he's eating it

Wild: 'Mr. Popper', a reference to Mr. Popper's Penguins, because they met when Wild was struggling to get clear pics of the penguins where Twi worked. He is forever the penguin boy to Twi, his contact pic is Wild pointing very excitedly at a penguin

Four: 'Four', and the pic is Four smacking his face into the table after Sky beat his ass in monopoly

Sky's phone:

Time: Also 'Mr. Forrester', though that's just how he typed it in when he was sixteen years old and has not changed it since. The contact pic is Time, Malon, Twi, Wars, and himself at the most recent holiday/birthday dinner. He updates it a few times a year

Warriors: 'Famous Guy' because, well, he is. The contact pic is this REALLY funny photo of War completely eating shit on the ice. Warriors is WELL aware of this, he set his own contact pic in Sky's phone and chose that himself

Twilight: Well after the whole wisdom tooth experience, it's now 'Applesauce Devourer'. The contact pic is one Sky took of Twilight quietly eating his apple sauce watching a movie the day after he'd gotten his wisdom teeth removed

Hyrule: 'Rulie', and the contact pic is a group shot where Sky just zoomed in on Hyrule and he's a little blurry looking and the pic is giving cryptid sighting

Legend: 'Pie Wizard', there's a story there. The contact pic is Legend with a wizard hat really poorly photoshopped on his head

Wild: 'ICE MUG.' because Wild would torment Sky by coming to the coffee shop he works at and ordering a mug of ice water, and Sky would go home and genuinely get so stressed out about it. No contact pic

Four: 'Tech Wizard', because Four one time fixed his computer in like. Seconds. and Sky was so blown away he's convinced Four is magical. The contact pic is the same as the one in Twi's phone: Four smacking his face into the table after Sky beat his ass in monopoly

Hyrule's phone:

Warriors: 'War', he doesn't have a funny nickname for him, War has such a big personality Hyrule is a little intimidated by him. The contact pic is a screenshot Hyrule took off his tiktok where Warriors is like. upside down in the air in the middle of a backflip

Twilight: 'Goats', and the contact pic is a screenshot of Twilight genuinely tearing up in a zoom meeting he hosted so he could give Hyrule his goat presentation he made for shits and giggles. You can see a bit of the slide in the back

Sky: 'Sky', and the contact pic is just a very nice pic of Sky smiling

Legend: 'Leg' with the intent of it being pronounced like leg the body part, and the contact pic is a .5 of Legend

Wild: 'WILD', and the contact pic is Wild hanging by his arms from a tree branch, actively trying to kick Hyrule who was the person taking the pic

Four: '4 Rubber Rats', it's a very long story and an inside joke between the two of them, and the contact photo is Four smiling and holding up one of his mice

Legend's phone:

Warriors: 'Noise Complaint', and the contact pic is Legend's hand actively flipping off War and you can just barely see War's offended face behind it

Twilight: 'Nice Upstairs Neighbor', and the contact pic is Twi's big ass brown eyes illuminated by the flash of Legend's camera, the shock on his face perfectly captured before he screamed in agony because the light was shone directly in his eyes (Legend didn't mean to have the flash on)

Sky: 'Sky', and the pic is him angrily remaking a coffee after a costumer yelled at him for doing EXACTLY what they asked. He had a really funny look on his face and Legend just had to take a pic, they both had a good laugh about it

Hyrule: 'Ruls', it's what he called him through high school. The contact pic is a selife of them from when they were 15 at a Halloween party

Wild: 'Wild', and the pic is somehow the only normal photo of Wild that exists outside of skating photos. Like he's not doing anything weird, he's sitting there smiling nicely, and THATS what makes it so fucking odd. No one can remember who took the pic or how Legend ended up with it

Four: '4', Legend is as creative as Warriors is. The contact pic is Four stuck in a tree pretending like he DOES actually know how to get down. It was taken before the panic set in

Wild's phone:

Warriors: 'Nemesis <3', the contact pic is him and War from like, the previous year. It was one of a few selfies War took with him that he intended to post, but the specific one Wild has as the contact pic is one War didn't think was perfect enough because he thought he (War) looked weird in it. He's genuinely smiling, and so is Wild, and that's why Wild likes the pic

Twilight: 'Penguin Dealer', because Twi let him get good pics of the penguins that first time they met by letting him come into a small room (that still had a full sheet of glass separating Wild from the penguins) because Wild couldn't see well over the high wall because he was in a wheelchair at the time. The contact pic is Twi staring out a window really dramatically

Sky: 'Ice mug', and the contact pic is literally just Sky hitting the shinji chair meme pose

Hyrule: 'Rulie', and the pic is him and Wild standing on a rock. They'd wanted to go hiking but Wild's hip was giving him shit, but he balanced himself up on that rock, crutch in one hand and his other arm around Hyrule's shoulders. They're both laughing, Twilight took the pic

Legend: 'Leg', because as you can see the friend group is really original. The contact pic is Legend and Wild baking together

Four: 'Owes me yarn', because otherwise Wild will forget that Four does in fact owe him yarn. The contact pic is Four stuck in a tree, same pic as Legend's contact pic for him

Four's phone:

Warriors: 'Cat Lady', and the pic is War dead asleep on his own couch in his own home with both his cats snuggled up to his face

Twilight: 'Twi', and the contact pic is a screenshot from a video where Twilight was arguing with War that he CAN, in fact, touch his toes, and he bent over to do so and somehow?? ended up leaning too far foreward?? and did a weird sort of fall/roll in the grass, and the contact pic for him on Four's phone is the moment you can see on Twi's face that he might be fucked because he may have leaned too far forward

Sky: 'Mom', it started as a joke when Four called Sky 'mom' after he asked if Four needed an entire lasagna. The contact pic is said lasagna

Hyrule: '1 Rubber Rat', and the contact pic is Hyrule sprawled out face down on the floor

Legend: 'Grumpy', and the contact pic is Legend genuinely smiling

Wild: 'buy him yarn', Wild set the name for him so FOUR wouldn't forget either. The contact pic is Wild getting chased by a goose

Wind: 'child', the contact pic is literally Wind as a three year old

Wind's phone:

he doesn't really have the other boys' numbers because hes not technically part of the friend group. He follows a few of them on instagram and/or tiktok and will message them there (or on discord), but he has War's number because War was his baby sitter, and Four's number because Four is his cousin

Warriors: 'WAR', and the contact pic is a really cute photo of the two of them the first time War took him skating (because Wind wanted to try and War got permission from his grandma to take him)

Four: 'mean 2 me', and theres no pfp. Four has never been mean to him, for context

So uhm.. for a project I'm doing, what do the brink characters hand writings look like??? I may be fully hand transcribing and binding brink...

And I want to do the letters in their hand writing soooo

Oooh okay sorry it took a me a while to answer this I’ve been thinking about responses

1: HOLY SHIT that’s so cool I would love to see that project come together if you end up posting things anywhere 🥺 I’m working on a revised pdf version (and updating the ao3 version as I go) to print and bind myself, but hand transcribing is so sick omg /gen

2: I’m hoping these descriptors make sense because they do in my brain but describing handwriting is,,, kinda hard haha 😅 (going based on order of appearance of handwriting in the first book)

Jamie’s handwriting is neat and orderly but simple. There’s not a lot of flourishes to it, especially since often they’re transcribing things for Rae, so it’s very much “getting this information down quick but readabe”. I think they’re the kind of person who like,,, isn’t super consistent with their cursive? So there’s some print letters occasionally in the words but mostly cursive.

Rae’s handwriting is thin and scrawling cursive. He was taught elegant, flourishing handwriting, but over the years as writing has become about getting down as many notes and thoughts as possible, it’s become compressed and rushed and frantic. Most of the time it’s readable by others, but not always

Athena’s handwriting is sharp and scratchy and blocky. It’s a rough handwriting, almost. Probably more print than cursive.

I think Easton’s writing, is very solid and matter of fact, in a way. Like very clear, distinct print letters. They are making sure the words are getting across. It’s usually clean and clear but once they’re corrupted it starts to get shaky and rough.

Strawberri’s handwriting is almost like what Rae’s should look like. Curled and elegant swirling cursive. Flowery, even, if you’ll excuse the pun. I think unlike the others who are writing for notes and science and such, Momboo’s writing is much more relaxed and dignified, almost.

I think that’s all the characters who have letters or documents written in Brink?? But let me know if I’ve missed any or if you wanted me to go into other characters, or characters handwriting from the other books!!

And at the end of the day like,,, don’t take this as gospel or something you need to match, necessarily!! If you have a vision for what their handwriting is in your headcanon of the story, that’s just as much canon to you as my thoughts on the matter are to me! That’s the beauty of fan works and headcanons is that you can make it your own!! And especially with something as intricate as transcribing the fic there’s so much of your own feeling put into it, there’s not a wrong way to interpret any of the handwritings or anything like that!! 🫶🫶 /geb

EPIC THE MUSICAL OPINIONS, VERY OPINIONS, VERY MINE.

IF YOU DON'T WANT SOME NEGATIVITY DON'T READ. THIS IS NOT PASSIVE AGGRESSIVE I SWEAR.

MOSTLY COMPILED AT NIGHT, SOME REVISION.

After this saga I'm left kind of perplexed about epic.

What is epic trying to say here? What's the musical's stance on ruthlessness?

Because it isn't very clear to me anymore.

Is it bad? Is it good and just? Is it a necessary evil? Is it worth becoming something monstrous just to achieve your goals?

The thing I'm trying to say is:

Is epic a tragedy or a triumph?

Until the vengeance saga I thought it was the former, but now I'm not so sure.

Throughout the story Odysseus takes desicions that either side with what I'll call the 'open arm mentality' or the 'ruthless' mentality.

He gets punished for both a number of times.

He kills Astianax so he doesn't have to fear his future vengeance.

He spares Polyphemus and that leads to 558 men dying.

He appeals to Circe's humanity and that leads her to freeing his men and helping him get to the underworld.

He sacrificed 6 men to Scylla and that leads to 'mutiny' and 'thunder bringer' where the rest of his crew dies and he ends up in calypso's island where she imprisoned him for 7 years.

First act of ruthlessness= good outcome

First act of open arms= bad outcome

Second act of open arms= good outcome

Second act of ruthlessness= bad outcome

(I forgot to add the sirens, that encounter is kinda strange tho. Ody kills all of them but I wouldn't call that ruthlessness. Ruthlessness is doing whatever needs doing to get what you want. He needed to know how to get home, and killing the sirens after doesn't matter in that context. I guess it's good for future sailors? I'll count this as an altruistic positive I guess)

This breakdown isn't perfect, lots of other things happen and some things Ody does can't really be neatly categorized by this simple metric imo, but I'll continue anyway as it feels to me the story breaks down his actions in a sort of similar dichotomy.

All in all the 'good to bad' ratio seems pretty balanced, right? It's not always ruthlessness that wins the day, and 'open arms' solutions don't always work out.

So why does it feel like we're supposed to root for ruthless Odysseus? Why does it feel like the story wants us to believe that being the monster is a good if 'somewhat sad' outcome?

Why am I saying this? Well, it's 600 strikes.

Actually just- all the vengeance saga.

Why is what Ody does here supposed to be cool and awesome? Because, like, that is absolutely the angle here.

Complete with a, honestly absurd, anime power up and fighting-god-one-on-one moment.

Why does the story break down it's logic, breaks suspension of disbelief (at least for me), to get Odysseus into a position were he can torture Poseidon into letting him go?

Wich?? Btw should not work??

Why is this how he wins?

Why are the ghosts of his friends and family no longer spectres of regrets for but terrifying promises of death?

What does this say? Was Odysseus wrong about their sacrifice? Was regret ever only a noose around his neck? I'm looking too deeply into this one lol.

In 'get in the water' we even get the obligatory appeal to Poseidon's mercy just to hammer down once again that 'open arms' doesn't work, even tho it's Athena's appeal to her father's mercy that set Odysseus free in the first place.

The saga ends with Poseidon asking Odysseus how he'll sleep at night after all of this and Ody, in admittedly the coldest line ever written on paper, says:

"Next to my wife"

...

This is cool.

Extremely cool even.

But that's kind of the problem I have with it.

The song ends in a badass way. This is meant to be the final zing to seal Odysseus' cool ass victory.

And in all of this, not once, does the story seem to recognize that...well...

Poseidon won.

Hell not even Poseidon recognized it!

I'm not even saying "OoOh if it was realistic Poseidon would have have won!" (Tho yeah, ask me about that, lol)

In the great ideological battle that's at the center of Epic: the musical, Poseidon was the ultimate victor.

Ruthless is what wins at the end, it's what gets Odysseus home. Odysseus might be a monster but he's a victorious one.

I feel people and the musical both don't really acknowledge that.

That even if Poseidon lost the battle he ultimately won the war.

Were is the irony? Where's the bitterness and sorrow? We're Poseidon's bloodied, mocking smirk revelling in his victory?

Is Epic a tragedy or a power fantasy?
