Toronto libraries could all soon be open year-round, Mayor Olivia Chow announced Sunday.
Speaking at a Toronto library, Chow announced a new plan on Sunday that will see seven-day-a-week service provided at all branches by July 2026. Currently, some branches in the city are closed on Sundays and Mondays. Last year's city budget allocated $10 million to expand hours at some of those branches, but not all.
"In my last budget we started this work, and in my next budget we will finish it," Chow told a small crowd at Toronto's Wychwood library branch, which is currently closed on Sundays.
"It shouldn't be closed today," Chow said. "It's Sunday. A lot of families are looking for things to do with their kids." [...]

St. Thomas police say an individual attended police headquarters late Sunday night or early Monday morning and committed what they’re calling a “festive act of mischief.”
The person of interest proceeded to hang Christmas lights across the property in what police say appeared to be an attempt to spread holiday cheer without prior authorization.
While officers appreciate the spirit of the season, “we take unauthorized decorating very seriously.”

The Trudeau government will announce plans for a high-speed train linking Quebec City and Toronto in the coming weeks, Radio-Canada has learned.
Proponents of the project hope the train will take passengers from Montreal to Toronto in three hours. By car, it takes about five-and-a-half hours to travel between the two cities.
Sources told Radio-Canada the train will travel 300 kilometres per hour — double the speed of Via Rail's current trains.
Ottawa announced plans back in 2021 to build what it called a "high-frequency" (HFR) rail corridor with stops in Toronto, Peterborough, Ottawa, Montreal, Trois-Rivières, Laval and Quebec City. Sources told Radio-Canada the federal government has now decided the Toronto-Quebec City link will be high-speed. [...]

Though minimum wage just increased, it is still not enough to be considered a living wage, according to a new report.
At the start of October, the minimum wage in Ontario rose to $17.20 per hour, marking a 3.9 per cent increase from the previous rate of $16.55 per hour.
But, the Ontario Living Wage Network (OLWN) says that it still falls short in order to live comfortably in the Greater Toronto Area. Per their report, published Monday, the living wage for the GTA is $26 per hour — $8.80 more than the current minimum wage. Compared to last year, the GTA's living wage was $25.05 an hour.
A "living wage" is the before-tax income an adult needs to make to cover basic necessities, like the costs of food and shelter, the network said.
