pls consider chiluc animal shelter au where childe volunteers at the shelter and comes in whenever he’s free just bcs he saw diluc go in there once and realized he worked there !! he literally just. plays with the small little dogs and help them wrangle all the more aggressive and scared dogs bcs he’s so gentle with them and diluc who helps run the shelter is like so reluctant to let him even be near the animals bcs he has seen this fucking loser get pecked at and chased by pigeons and squirrels whenever he goes to the park (he is instantly smitten with him the second he sees him help calm down one of the strays well enough to get it to eat some food. they are so in love)

childe originally went to this animal shelter to adopt a puppy for teucer. he planned on this entire thing being a one time thing. but the moment he see's that stone faced redhead who treats the kittens with such gentle care, he is smitten. absolutely hopeless from there on out.

so childe decides to start volunteering at the shelter, much to the redheads reluctance. the shelter doesn't accept volunteer work, they never have. the redhead also doesn't know how childe is like, and the only things the redhead has seen of childe is him getting chased and pecked at by the local parks pigeons and ducks..... but the shelter could use an extra pair of hands... so the redhead gives in.

and, at first, it was a weekend thing. childe would come in on a saturday afternoon, volunteer with the puppies and kitties, just to keep them entertained and loved for the day, and that was it. half of the day was spent making poor attempts at conversation (which include flirty little jabs, that are actually quite embarrassing and stupid looking back... why did he say any of that?) with the red head, and the other half was spent excitedly waiting and wondering when the red head would come and check on him, or even pass by him.

the more he volunteers, the more he learns about the red head. his name is diluc. his favorite animals are birds, and he owns quite a few too. diluc actually owns the animal shelter, and works there alongside his brother (who he frequently bickers with?) and a couple other employees childe cannot be bothered to learn the names of.

and the more childe learns about diluc, the more he volunteers at this shelter. instead of just coming in on weekends, he starts volunteering during the week too. he memorizes diluc's work schedule, so he can time his volunteer days on the days diluc is working. it starts becoming such a common occurrence, that diluc has once offered a job to childe, just for the ginger to brush it off with a laugh.

maybe several months after their initial meeting, along with childe deciding to start volunteering at this shelter, the more he starts to notice diluc letting his guard down.

he seems more relaxed around childe, his face softening and growing just a tad more expressive as the weeks go by. he engages in conversation with childe more and more often, even revealing more tid bits about his life and his interests (which diluc has never done!!!! oh my god!!!!!)

so imagine childe's surprise, over a year after he has started regularly volunteering and visiting this animal shelter, diluc, the owner himself who childe has bit absolutely head over heels for, asks childe on a date.

the red head tries to maintain his composure, but he fails horribly. he avoids eye contact the entire time, his face is almost as red as his hair, he flexing his fingers against his sides, and as much as he tries to keep his voice strong, it wavers at some parts. and childe is over the moon.
