A young woman sticks her head out the window of a bus which had just arrived in Paducah, Kentucky. She was posing for LIFE magazine photographer Ralph Crane for a 1952 story on the town, which had been dubbed "The Atomic City": in 1950, the US government selected Paducah as the site for a large uranium enrichment facility which grew the town considerably during the Cold War.

I should've posted this while Oppenheimer was trending to get more eyes on it.
But the bomb in Oppenheimer was tested in New Mexico and many people in the fallout zone developed rare types of cancer.
The New Mexico residents only learned about the Trinity Test after the U.S. dropped atomic bombs on the Japanese cities of Hiroshima and Nagasaki during World War II. The bomb's aftermath later caused rare forms of cancer for many of the 30,000 residents and their descendants in the area surrounding Trinity.

Un-f**king-believable.
Uh, Elon says nuclear bombs aren't as scary as people think.
I think the entire country of Japan would beg to differ.
In saying that, #ElonMusk has shown he's nearly as demented as #trump. #donOLD just talked, publicly, about nuking hurricanes. Gods know what the fool said in "private."

The Air Force Museum's B-29 Superfortress is Bockscar, the plane that dropped the atomic bomb over Nagasaki.  The red bomb emblem above the plane's nose art represents that mission, while the others represent more standard bombing missions.
Below that you can see a replica of the Fat Man atomic bomb along with a replica of Little Boy, which had been dropped over Hiroshima by the Enola Gay just days before.  The Enola Gay is in the possession of the Smithsonian and is on display at the Air and Space Museum's Udvar-Hazy Center.

The ancient Chinese actually figured out how to make nuclear bombs in 1000BCE, but they found the technology frivolous and stupid, and never used it

this is such a funny quote when you take this into account:
Tumblr media
“In this 1980s, President Reagan announced that he had unilaterally reduced the total yield of the US nuclear arsenal. What he did not say publicly at the time was that, even though the total yield was down, it had been distributed among many smaller weapons, resulting in an increase in the total destructive capability. He was being honest, but not candid. Or maybe he didn’t understand the physics as well as you will when you become president?”.
-Physics for Future Presidents by Richard A. Muller
okay reagan so how are you gonna deal with the problem of all the nuclear missiles we have? rearrange them? so that they can have a larger range and therefore more destructive power? okay,,,

(if you're interested, ask me about the conspiracy theorist nut job who used to run the Alien Exhibit in Blackpool)
When The Monkey Nut was a lirrel tyke (five years old and up) we went to Blackpool for several holidays, (we stayed in the same self catering flats as Tonka and I stayed at for our honeymoon)
One year we saw a place called (I think) The Alien Exhibit and went in. It was, erm, interesting shall we say? Most of the various 'creatures' had little signs, with the usual gobbledegook (or grobble-a-duke to quote Baldrick) 'This is an X, an eighth power level being from planet Y in sector Z'. Half way round was a scale model of a bloody Dalek. To cut a long story short, it killed a bit of time, wasn't too expensive, was sort of amusing, and the building had air con, then still a rarity in the UK, and it was bloody hot seeing as how it was our anniversary week, yes Tonka and myself got married in August.
Anyhoo, the owner asked what we thought of the side exhibit, (easily missed because of the layout) so he gave us a personal tour of some of the most cack-minded, idiotic, horse-shit peddling, conspiracy theorist bull-shit, that we have ever known. To name just the 3 that get name checked:-
The Moon Landings were faked by Aliens (original, but utter crap considering we all know they were filmed in the NASA base under Olympus Mons on Mars)
This hole in some ancient structure that was so precise and smooth it could only have been drilled by a LASER (apparently erosion isn't a thing.
And these fused stones (in Scotland I think?) that could only have been fused by the heat of a Thermo-Nuclear blast.
Text cannot carry the emotion of "ooo Aliens! LASERS! Nuclear Bombs!" so I tried recording it. Like Alfred cooking Fake Jerry "I fucked up!"
Just say it being as faux dramatic and wavering as you can then turn it up to eleven!

Hey since Oppenheimer is opening the discussion around the bombings of hiroshima and Nagasaki can we please tag these things with ww2 or something because reading that shit unprompted on a Friday evening can be a huge bummer for Japanese people with generational trauma
Like yeah it's probably good to talk about it and whatever but as far as I'm concerned as a Japanese American, that era was beyond fucked and I don't like having to think about it. Some of us were sent to internment camps for our race, and those of us who got out of it will never be accepted by the people who did. There's a whole internal discourse judging which families suffered the most and it ripped out community apart. Our relatives died young from radiation complications and there's nothing we could do about it.
So can you PLEASE just tag that shit so we don't have to see it if we aren't emotionally up for engaging with the way our innocent children melted in the streets? Thanks.
