POV : You are a Yao woman who was so fed up of patriarchy that you invented an entire script that let you communicate with your gal pals about it.
Formal education for women was banned in ancient China which facilitated the need for a script made by women, for women. This allowed women to talk and write freely about the misogynistic and patriarchal norms without being persecuted by men.
In short, these women were heroes and their contributions to language and culture are worth remembering.

I love how girls and language are so intertwined, we all know and love how teenage girls literally are always the ones leading language innovation, but I really love the language NüShu.
It’s a language from Jiangyong county in china in the 19th century that women made amongst themselves. Bc of feudal society at the time women didnt have freedom of expression and they passed this language down from mother to daughter and friends would talk to each other in it, it’s know for its delicate fine scripts, they’d sing what they wanted to say to each other and put it in poems, it’s such a beautiful and creative way to get around such harsh limitation. Especially the fact it’s written as well and women were denied education.. idk I just like love it

A veces, simples; otras veces, profundos.

Chapter 60: Misogyny triumphs; something something Flaming Mountain
Tumblr media
Well, this chapter was pretty much a misogynist’s fantasy.
I’m not going to spell it out. I trust that everyone here has the capacity to see it for themselves if they want to. So let me express my feelings about this chapter thus:
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
If you need some brain bleach after that chapter, may I recommend one of Jung Chang’s books, or maybe watching a documentary about Nushu, the secret written language created by Chinese women for women only.

Baaaaai! See you next week!

Image credits: The usual spiel. The images above are either AI, or random pictures from the web, or a Frankenstein of both; some modified, some not. They are not original. The pre-existing images should turn up with reverse googling or have links embedded, but feel free to ask and I’ll dig up sources.

Is it good or cringe if I can this magazine Nushu. Especially if I can't really prounounce it.
Nushu is the name for the women's only language from Hunan. It literally means "woman's writing " in chinese. Designed by woman for women.
I also think it's interesting that Chinese and Arabic have similar sounds for woman. Nu or nushi in Chinese and nisa in old Quranic Arabic. Very similar sounds.
I wonder if there is a common root.
My other one would have been janani or zanani because what I've written about that word in the past of now that use to be the more common away of refereeing to women (it means life giver) because it was replaced in common language Urdu by a more vulgar way to refer to woman aurat which refers to genitals in Arabic.

Another katakana neography. You can se that it is based on a monogram, and that it has some unique aesthetic, doesn't it. Someone compared it to Nushu once.

Hidden Letters
Summary: Chinese documentary about a way of writing known as Nushu that has kept women's communications private for generations and the efforts of 3 women to keep this cultural asset relevant in modern China.
Plot with some spoilers: This Chinese documentary is quietly feminist and revolutionary using quite an arcane topic, it ruminates about Nushu (literally women's script), a form of writing that developed in China so women could communicate with each other bypassing the tight control that patriarchal society had over them, the script had been passing from mother to daughter for generations but it is in danger of disappearing in spite of being of undeniable cultural importance.
The history and relevance of Nushu is presented through its relationship with three modern women, Hi Xin, described as a "national treasure" thanks to being a Nushu expert, He Yanxin, an elderly woman proficient in Nushu helping any way she can to keep this strange way of writing alive for the future generations and Simu, who is passionate about talking about Nushu and has to balance this passion with the demands of modern life.
He Yanxin provides the connection with Nushu's past, Hi Xin leans heavily on her to learn as much as possible about Nushu but we witness how her interest, expertise and accolades can't shield her from the Chinese, mostly male, bureaucracy trying to appropriate her success as an advocate and promoter of Nushu and how she being a divorcee seems to be more important to some people than her expertise.
Simu has entirely different problems, she is planning to get married and is invited to meet her boyfriend's family, during the meeting her boyfriend comes across as an insufferable retrograde bore (sorry mate, that's how I saw it, apologies if you ever read this) expecting Simu to help in the kitchen in spite of she being the visitor, later on he mades abundantly clear that Nushu is a hobby to be abandoned as soon as they get married as far as he is concerned.
The documentary is painful to watch at times because the obstacles these women have to overcome to keep Nushu alive seem unsurmountable and silly in equal measures, but their commitment to the task and the decisions they take made me root for them all the way during the film.
This is one of those little jewels that the programmers curate to surprise us and caught us unawares with an ultra niche but worthwhile topic.

nushu
a creeping sickness deep in the soles of my shoes towing toes across charcoal cauldrons the vices of mother nature it holds a certain power dropped my basket
we both write our own soliloquys they disgust me i've burnt enough parchment on this hobby of decay
i turn up and cool off in the ashtray plastic, glass, silicon, nylon, leather, cotton
a creeping sickness ushering spoonful after spoonful cravings of indignation a bitterness best expressed in vengeful success i don't even think i could muster that
