Randomly Generated Haikyuu Character #73: Iwaizumi Hajime

Hey, this looks familiar! Like I had mentioned with Oikawa’s, I copied this drawing over from my sketchbook to the card stock on my graduation cap that I showed several months back, and how fitting it was that this was the last character that got pulled before I graduated! It felt like the perfect send off and yet it was completely a coincidence as every character is randomized and I never know which one I’m gonna get! I couldn’t help but think it was fate :))

Anyways, love Iwaizumi, such a fantastic character and I adore his relationship with Oikawa. There’s a reason I ended up writing their soulmate story second after all!

As per usual, it’s a screenshot redraw, comparison and my thoughts under the cut!

This is the part where I sort of noticed that spiky hairstyles were becoming a little easier to draw, mostly because I’ve found a good workflow/method for doing it! I don’t think it’s ever going to be the easiest for me to do but it’s becoming much less difficult and that’s all I care about honestly

I still find it fascinating seeing how my style differs whenever I do these redraws, particularly the eyes I think. I’m not really sure why

Hello friends, hello mutuals, hello dimension dyfenders fans and hello people who like indie cartoon/comic stuff in general! Comet here. Once Again. and this time i've got something ig this year. This was supposed to release on May 29th, but due to Ren not coming back for a long time because they needed to prioritize irl stuff, of course, we had to delay it.

But, but, BUT! thankfully I had a few things ready after all, however as for some other things else, we'll get to it much later, when the moment calls. Now, let's get off with the first one.

You Kinda... Look Different.

You may have noticed that Dislexo looks a bit different than usual (darker skin, a bit of shorter hair, etc.), in case you're wondering why... Yeah, you're about to find out.

So, while I was thinking and drawing up some D.D related stuff, I was brainstorming a little by my lonesome. All of the sudden, as I was making a new render for a character, I was like... "Wait a minute... What if I give Dislexo a new look which is a mix between a secretary and a butler but keep it's elements from what made their design unique?" and So, the new and improved Dislexo was born!

Honestly i'm proud of what they look like now. I just hope i won't (or will) get to redesign ALL of the cast again so suddenly lol! Anyways, thats just a small change I made, nothing too big. Now, let's get on something else... which is...

Pocket Adventures' current status + how's minisode 1 coming along

You might be asking inside your minds, "i wonder when more of minisode 1 will drop", "where are the new parts?"- Well, i got the answer. It'll only come only when im completely finished. However i havent been working much on it aside from making a few pages a few months ago, but hopefully this summer i may get back to it and finish it all up if i can. The final script is 73% percent complete, as for the comic itself, let's just say its 58%. I promise you i'm taking my time with delivering everything i can for this minisode. However i might republish the minisode with the series' current artstyle if it ever comes out physically (or either when I'll have the time or energy to do it.) So, now, you may be wondering: "But Comet, what do we do while we wait." Well you're not gonna believe this.

No, it's not an extremely late april fools post! We got new stuff coming soon, recently i've been brainstorming some ideas for brand new content, and you know what? It came to me, HERE'S WHAT'S COMING!

THAT'S RIGHT, after months of hiatus, Toonies is coming back with more strips! This time, since summer's coming around, i'll try to post and make more of them and even schedule the finished ones! We got even more covers for it coming, but for now, here's one of them!

More comics are not only gonna explore more of the Dyfenders' and the Dajo Crew's everyday lives in-and-out of their superhero/Villain occupations, we are also going to focus on much more on other characters (at least some of them), and some will last for a few more pages longer! No arcs though, sorry. But hey, you're getting more wackiness as a treat! Now, i know i said this year is not gonna be big like the other two years we had, but...

NEW SPECIAL CURRENTLY IN DEVELOPMENT!

THAT'S RIGHT! We're working on a new special to commemorate our three years! Thought it'd be a nice adiction to this year, we may not reveal the logo and it's title yet, but we can tell you what the sypnosis is about!

You're all invited to the biggest night in the Omniverse, right across it's stars, cosmos, galaxies and portals! Both the Dimension Dyfenders and the Dajo-Crew are crossing the red (or should we say, blue) carpet in this brand new 3-part special! Prince Dajo-Voo has a new plan on how to take over the gala, all while he tries to self-control himself from doing the same explosive incident he did back then. The Dyfenders may be having a great time at the gala, but rest assured, they'll be sure to keep a close eye on him. Here's to a Rift-errific and (hopefully) trouble-free gala!

As a bonus, when the production on all three parts are done, we'll be posting Toonies comics related to the special, which may feature a new character who will debut later on in Pocket Adventures! We don't know when it'll exactly be out, my guesses would be either summer, september or next May 2025. But rest assured, we'll be working on it, but we won't rush it out.

So... What's next?

Honestly, i can't really tell. But I can assure you i still have so may plans for this series, plans that will be put in action in the far-off future. What i really hope to do is to make animated shorts as well, not just Toonies strips, pocket adventures minisodes and comic dubs of it. Maybe if we'll ever make a backerkit or a kickstarter for it and get a budget, it might happen (along with more VAs joining in.) Speaking of VAs, in case you're a VA and you haven't auditioned yet, anytime is the right time! (this is still a test leap, but if it succeeds it may go further.)

but for now, we're sticking to comics, and then, if possible we'll get to comic dubs and so on.

X grants more government requests than Twitter did

His social media platform took action on 71% of legal requests between January and June, according to a new report

Elon Musk’s social media platform has released the first transparency report since he bought it in 2022, showing a company ready and able to comply with government takedown requests.

Before Wednesday, the company now called X Corp.’s last transparency report covered the final six months of 2021. That report included information on how the company, then called Twitter, enforced its rules, responded to government requests for information, legal demands to axe content, copyright and trademark notices, and other details.

According to The Washington Post, which reviewed X’s report, the website acted on 71% of the legal requests it received to remove content during the first half of 2024. That’s up 20% from 2021 and more than the roughly 30% of requests it complied with in prior years.

Many of those requests came from a few countries, such as Turkey and South Korea, and were often successful in getting content removed or restricted.

Sixty-eight percent of cases requested by Turkey — which has strict censorship laws and is led by President Recep Tayyip Erdoğan, who has asked Musk to build a Tesla (TSLA+0.21%) factory in his country — were complied with. X also acted on 73% of those requested by South Korea, 79% of those requested by Japan, and 80% by the European Union.

That’s in stark contrast to Musk’s public position as a self-described “free speech absolutist,” especially in light of his recent, high-profile feud with Brazil’s government, although the company’s response falls in line with X’s actions over the first six months of his ownership.

It was a much quieter month on the writing front. I managed 43,000 words by some miracle, across a bunch of different stories.

REVIEWING THE CHARTS: 07/09/2024 (Nothin')

Sabrina Carpenter takes the entire top three for a second week - “Taste” at #1 (also its second week there) with “Please Please Please” at #2 and “Espresso” at #3. And whilst we’re here, the rest of the UK Singles Chart’s top five consists of Chappell Roan’s “Good Luck, Babe!” at #4, “BIRDS OF A FEATHER” by Billie Eilish at #5, and this episode at… 8:15. Welcome back to REVIEWING THE CHARTS!

Rundown

As always, we start the episode with the notable dropouts, those being songs exiting the UK Top 75, which is what I cover, after five weeks in the region or a peak in the top 40. This week, we bid adieu to “Did it First” by Ice Spice and Central Cee, and yes, that’s it. This was not a particularly exciting week and the rest of the dropouts simply weren’t notable, much was just Fontaines D.C. naturally slipping away after the first week. In fact, realistically, you can skip this week. We’ve got two debuts in the lower reaches and a whole bunch of gains that mostly just feel expected or temporary given how slow this week was in particular. There’s not much in the way of a surge or fascinating trend here, just kind of a stall-out, which is natural for a chart but does not leave me with much to say, hence the stalling.

We see returns for “These Words” by Badger and Natasha Bedingfield at #75 and “You’re Gonna Go Far” by Noah Kahan at #60, but most of the stories, if you can call them that, are deep into our notable gains, with boosts for “Belong Together” by Mark Ambor at #64, “The Man Who Can’t be Moved” by The Script at #62 and God, you know it’s a slow week when “Mr. Brightside” is up six spots to #59. After that, we see rises for “You & Me” by Disclosure featuring Eliza Doolittle at #56, “Black Friday (pretty like the sun)” by Tom Odell and Lost Frequencies at #55 - can’t be mad at those - then “Close to You” by Gracie Abrams at #53, “Diet Pepsi” by Addison Rae at #50, probably the most notable gain here for a pretty mediocre song, then “Pretty Slowly” by Benson Boone at #43, “WE PRAY” by Coldplay and co. at #31, unfortunately, “I Love You, I’m Sorry” by Gracie Abrams at #25, “Sailor Song” by Gigi Perez at #24, “Slow it Down” by Benson Boone at #19 and some residual hype for the Oasis comeback really seeping into the highest reaches of the chart: “Wonderwall” at #11, “Don’t Look Back in Anger” at #9 and “Live Forever” at a brand new peak of #8. Now to look at the two songs debuting in the top 75 right near the bottom and see if I’ll look back in anger at these flops or that these iconic smashes will live forever. I… don’t think I can pull that one off.

#73 - “Indestructible” - Andy C and Becky Hill

Part of me is somewhat excited for a song like this - a lesser-known producer, so one less likely to be coasting on name recognition, teams up with a recently inspired Becky Hill, whose last album was great, for a single with a cover art that looks straight out of 2014. Surely, this will be alright, and it very much is in the vein of what I expected, though with a sense of epic bombast that the charts do sometimes miss… and contrasts heavily with our other debut. The layered buzz of synths behind Becky are peppered with smaller synth plucks that are really cute to notice, and eventually transform into a pulsing build-up that, whilst sometimes clunky with its percussion, locks in well enough for a distorted, warping bass in the expected drum and bass drop alongside some really detailed synthwork in that moment that really fills the mix in what is basically just a dancefloor smash with little error. It’s not going for anything too drastic, in fact, the sound is reminiscent of exactly what I expected going in, but it dedicates itself to that sound in a way that is far from cheap and ends up being just as immersive as the best tracks from Becky’s last record. I could even see it slotting in and not doing too much damage to the tracklist cohesion. As far as if it will be a success, who knows? I do want to say it has some promise on sheer quality alone, but we’ll see.

#72 - “TOO COOL TO BE CARELESS” - PAWSA

PAWSA was the guy behind the second of the Nate Dogg bootleg remixes - if that sounds weird to you, it is weird but I covered it in detail when those songs debuted - and it seems like that has actually landed him some vague follow-up success, with our highest debut - weird to say that about a #72 peak thus far - being his single that had been bubbling under for a few weeks. Our story actually starts long before, however, in 1984 with the release of “Don’t Look Any Further” by the late Dennis Edwards featuring Siedah Garrett, an R&B staple that has been prolifically sampled in countless of rap songs, primarily for its bassline and iconic vocal riffs. The original actually only peaked at #45 here, but a cover by M People reached #9 in 1993, whilst Meat Loaf was #1 for “I’d Do Anything for Love (but I Won’t Do That)”, and again, it’s been sampled way more times to even list here, as the songs that sampled it have themselves become iconic, oft-sampled hits like “Shackles (Praise You)” by Mary Mary or “Hit ‘Em Up” by 2Pac. In his new version, PAWSA pitches it down and emphasises the subtler synth funk elements in the original mix to an almost vintage house sound that really is minimal in both presentation and composition, getting by on a classic bassline and some cute but basic drum programming, as well as the flickering synth line and a mixed vocal from Edwards that does not sound great at this pitch. What’s most disappointing is that you could easily turn singular elements of this song into fully realised, new songs as has been done before, so if you’re packaging this as its own thing, not just a remix, it wouldn’t hurt to take a few more artistic risks, and I’m honestly confused as to why PAWSA wouldn’t want to outside of laziness or just knowing that a great sample that was a minor hit back then can be just as successful at a different tempo. This is definitely better than hiss Nate Dogg remix, but I do feel like there could be much more potential here that’s untapped.

Conclusion

I mean, it should be obvious given I’m picking between two tracks, but Andy C and Becky Hill get Best of the Week for “Indestructible” whilst PAWSA snabs the Worst of the Week for “TOO COOL TO BE CARELESS”, though saying I have any strong feelings about these would be a lie. As for what’s on the horizon, I expect Megan Thee Stallion, Central Cee Linkin Park to do some damage but maybe The Chainsmokers, Aitch or Fred again.. can spice things up too. Somehow, the easier weeks end up as the dullest to write. For now, thank you for reading, rest in peace to Rich Homie Quan, and I’ll see you next week!

10/24/2024 updates:

I know this is an active month as far as me posting. I'll probably disappear for a few months after this, you know how it goes. But for now, I am going to want these notes in the future.

Japanese: I'm 4700 sentences into glossika japanese now, out of 6400, so ~73%. I will get through the new sentences by the end of the month hopefully, and then just do reviews in November.

My hopes that increasing listening comprehension/knowledge of words would help my reading skill is actually working out: when I read manga, I am finding it easier and if there's a lot of furigana then that helps fill in the gaps for kanji words I guess (based on hiragana) but don't know the pronunciation for. I tried reading my japanese translation of Guardian by priest today, print copy, and I can understand everything on the page (except one use of 'yoku' hiragana which I am not sure what it was conveying). Unfortunately, my print novel does NOT use furigana on a lot of kanji, so a weird thing happened where the words I know the pronunciation of I could mentally 'hear' the japanese pronunciation of those kanji words, but the kanji words I didn't know from listening... I just mentally 'heard' chinese. So I'm going to need to read novels, or anything without furigana, WHILE LISTENING TO AUDIO. Otherwise I'm not going to pick up kanji pronunciations properly. So my plan to move to Satori Reader after glossika, is going to work well.

It's interesting to me just how many words in a novel... look just like the hanzi words in chinese (some kanji are slightly different but they're still recognizable if you know hanzi). So like... "try on" is 試着 shi-chaku (compared to chinese shishi 试穿 shi-chuan) which are quite similar pronunciations and shi is the same character and rough pronunciation, and if I saw 試着 in chinese I'd assume it means try-ing. Basically, it's recognizable as a word clearly related to 'try'. But "try" is 試す (tamesu) versus chinese 试试 shishi or 尝试 changshi, quite different pronunciation, still an ability to guess meaning. But then words like human resources, Special Investigations Division, Gate Guardsman, human-realm, Shen Wei's soul cutting title in the novel, souls, black-cat, are all similar kanji to the hanzi I would expect when reading chinese. So a LOT of words are quite easy to guess the meaning of but I'm lost on their pronunciation unless I already learned the japanese pronunciation of those kanji-words. This happens a lot with ALL kanji words (as in no hiragana conjugation).

This is just interesting to encounter, some kanji have super similar pronunciations like xiang-xin 相信 believe compared to japanese shin-jiru 信じる with the 信 pronounced roughly similar as xin and shin. While others are like guarantee 保证 bao-zheng in chinese, hoshou-shimasu 保証します in japanese use the same characters but totally different pronunciation. You can't be certain the japanese kanji pronunciations will be similar to the chinese. Kanji-only words seem to more often be similarly pronounced, but that is not true enough to rely on. One of the comparisons I made early on lol was japanese 時間jikan and chinese 时间 shijian for time. To my mind, ji and shi are similar enough sounds to notice, but kan and jian aren't. I suppose everyone will make those distinctions a bit differently. I just know seeing 時間 and hearing jikan the first time, it made sense that would be the japanese pronunciation to my mind from what I knew about the characters, but also threw me off for being the amount different that it was.

I'm curious what other language learners who knew hanzi before learning japanese words feel about picking up kanji pronunciations... I should go search some forums...

I do 100% think knowing hanzi makes figuring out the meaning of kanji words much easier. And for me, since Heisig and mnemonics never worked for me learning kanji (I think because I mentally NEEDED a sound to tie with the kanji but Heisig's book and suggestions didn't provide that or have a solution for that for kanji since kanji have multiple pronunciations, whereas when I studied hanzi I immediately tied a pronunciation to each new hanzi I learned so they stuck easier in my mind), learning hanzi was much easier. Once I had a bunch of meanings tied to characters in my head (thanks to learning hanzi), then seeing kanji presented only the issue of 'how do I pronounce it' and no longer the double issues of both figuring out pronunciation And meaning.

I also went through 2 songs yesterday, Hikari by Utada Hikaru and Doctor by Chanmina, and learned the meaning of all the words in the songs. The combo of romaji/listening for pronunciation plus the kanji-hiragana lyrics worked well. I finally get what my friend meant when they said Utada sings japanese... different. The pronunciation's clear, it's not that. It's that syllables I don't expect to be elongated when singing sometimes are, and the part of the word Utada decides to elongate is not always what I'd expect. I do, however, know the tune of that song intensely well lol as I've heard it since I was 11, so it wasn't hard to adjust. Chanmina raps mostly, and so probably as expected in rap, syllables were all around the same length.

tldr: the approach of listening-focused study has been helping the way I've hoped, and I'm seeing noticeable improvements in reading skill and listening skill, moving onto Satori Reader next will work well I think.

Chinese: so frustrating lol. But I just need to stick with it. Getting myself to commit to listening to 8 hours of audio... never mind 20, or 50, or the 200+ I REALLY need to listen to see the kind of significant improvements I'm hoping for? It's harder than you'd think. You'd think I could just put on audio, let it play in the background, and be good. But I get so frustrated I don't understand every word (or even just the words that SOUND familiar and I know I should recognize), so then I feel the urge to Replay certain sections, to re-listen to the same 5-10 minutes over and over, to focus harder and try to catch what I'm not quite getting, to look up the words I am getting frustrated by. And then before you know it, I spent 1 hour on my phone's translation app, constantly replaying audio in 30 second chunks, and was not able to multi-task at all. Instead of playing it in the background, I focused on it totally and tried to transcribe a bunch of words into a translator app, and then exhausted myself, and then don't feel up for doing another hour of that kind of intensive listening. The solution, of course, is for me to just fucking let go of being a perfectionist and LISTEN IN THE BACKGROUND. But then I feel irritated with myself for not looking up "just a few words" (a lie, I'll look up dozens) because I 'almost get them' and just want to quickly know what they mean instead of waiting several minutes for my brain to figure it out gradually.

I am TRYING to listen in the background. My perfectionist tendencies kick in a lot, though.

Despite it all! I am already seeing small progress, which will hopefully convince me to STOP intensively listening and looking everything up, and accept that background listening while working or walking WILL also result in progress.

Last night I listened to a podcast a friend shared with me, about Chinese supernatural stories. I could understand probably 90% or more of each word they said, I was just a bit puzzled by if in those first 7 minutes the podcasters were summarizing the several supernatural stories they'd be delving into for the rest of the hour, or if they were listing off several different supernatural stories SUPER fast. I noticed progress, because I listened to that podcast last week and could barely understand anything. So clearly, in part I just needed to train my listening skills more to hear what I already know. I also felt a bit of assurance, because I recognized nearly every word the podcasters said, so I do know a LOT of conversational words. In audiobooks, sometimes the words used are a lot less common than the words in dramas or conversations... since the words people say (unless they're giving lectures or educating or delving on a niche subject) tend to be a bit more commonly used. Knowing that, at least when it comes to conversational words, I do know around as many words as I expected I knew, was comforting.

Also, now I know I can listen to that podcast for 'easier' listening practice, when audiobooks are frustrating me.

Spanish: hahahahaha haaaaaaa. Should I be doing anything with Spanish right now? No, not really. I've got no time (I'm allotting an hour to Japanese and Chinese study each, with 2 hours for each a day if I can fit it in). I do not need to learn it, there's no pressing need in my life or things I'm directly involved in that require me to understand more Spanish. I'm just procrastinating my actual goals in other study, apparently.

My little attempt to use Dreaming Spanish got me curious. 1. About Comprehensible Input learning (without word lookups), and 2. about how much Spanish I could just 'pick up' with exposure, given the French I know, the ~2000 Spanish words I'm vaguely familiar with, and that 1 summer of Spanish cram study I did. Does it help that I have any easier time listening to Spanish and picking out words compared to when I listen to French? It sure does. Out of curiosity I looked up some of the beginner podcasts Dreaming Spanish learners were recommending on the r/dreamingspanish subreddit (which has great general study suggestions, if studying any language tbh). One of them was How to Spanish, so I looked that podcast up and listened to an episode. It was understandable, which was cool. So I may listen to more. Now, it is for beginners, so it's probably made to be understandable even if you know nothing or almost nothing. Still, it felt cool to understand! I also tried listening to a Spanish audiobook of a kid's book I've read before in English, listened to maybe 20 minutes, and had no trouble following the main plot based on the words I was catching. Now, to be fair, I was probably relying heavily on proper-nouns to place what scene and paragraph was about what. But still, interesting.

If I start trying to watch a Spanish show, well. I'm probably just doing more sidetracking and having fun. I really want to watch Elite, regardless.
