"Mystery on a Moonlit Cruise" Epilogue

Toi: Ani-sama, look at the way the HAMA port twinkles! It’s so pretty…

Ryui: I think your sparkle is even more radiant. Hey, take my jacket. I'll bet that the ocean breeze is making you cold.

Akuta: I always knew that food would taste a gazillion times better in a place like this.

Momiji: This really is an incredible spot. Thank you for showing us, Nanaki-kun!

Nanaki: Don’t mention it. It’d be a waste to hog this place all to myself.

(Even if this is the total opposite of the one-on-one vibe I was hoping for, I’m glad I managed to invite her either way…!)

Kafka: Definitely. The interior of the ship is stunning in it’s own right, but the sun deck is really something else ♪

Nanaki: Oh, Oguro-san—

Momiji: Kafka, you’re back. How’d your chat with the cruise ship director go?

Kafka: Since we’re all here, I suppose now’s a good time to break the news. I won’t ask you to stop eating, but lend me your ears, if you please.

While I was talking to the director, I pitched my proposal for a ‘Sailing to Dreamland’ project and he absolutely loved the idea!

Yukikaze: The combination of sleeping and cruising? That's quite the interesting pair you've come up with.

Kafka: My vision is to turn the time spent aboard into an experience unlike any other by utilising Netaro’s inventions to provide a premium level of relaxation. Pretty innovative idea, right?

Yachiyo: Waah…! That’s incredible, sir! Such a combination is something that us foolish commoners with our static brains stunted by preconceived ideas could never dream of conceptualising!

Yodaka: I see. I’m sure that this will be a warmly welcomed service for those living the fast-paced and taxing lifestyles of the modern age.

Ryui: Just making sure, but you’re not gonna be using Yowa’s inventions the same way he did tonight, are you?

Kafka: Of course not. What happened today was just one mistake away from becoming a far greater issue. I will see to it that nothing like this happens again.

That’s why I’m going to be asking Netaro to make some further improvements on his invention and to write up an in-depth manual! In it's current state, his creation will blindly put both humans and robots to sleep.

Netaro: This is the wo~rst. The invention I made to get out of work has become the very thing to dump a bucket of extra chores onto me~.

Ryui: Sounds like a good way to properly atone for your crimes to me.

Nanaki: Uh…excuse me, Ryui-san.

Ryui: What is it?

Nanaki: About earlier…

Ryui: (Earlier…?)

ーFlashback

Nanaki: If we keep digging into this, it might end up driving us mad with paranoia instead.

Ryui: …

If that’s how you feel then there’s nothing stopping you from sitting on your ass.

Nothing will change as long as you refuse to do anything. Things’ll stay the same as always, and you’ll get to keep hiding away from harm in that safe little bubble.

Nanaki: …Is there something wrong with that?

Ryui: ....Sigh.

Nanaki: I-Is something wrong?

Ryui: No, I just feel like that became a bigger deal than it needed to be.

Nanaki: Oh…I see. Still, I want to thank you.

Ryui: ‘s nothing worth thanking me for.

Muneuji: I’ve been thinking…since music was at the heart of this dilemma, wouldn't that mean that Nanamegi was closer than any of us to uncovering the truth?

Momiji: Oh, really…! It sounds like you were really busy while the rest of us were asleep…!

Nanaki: Oh, uh, it was nothing…besides, Ryui-san was the one who ultimately pressed Yowa-san into confessing everything himself anyway.

Yukikaze: Regardless, you picked up on things that completely slipped by the rest of us. That proves just how observant you are, Nanaki.

Muneuji: Indeed. You really take note of the little things, Nanamegi.

Nanaki: Muneuji…

Muneuji: Even on a daily basis, you translate the sounds Isotake makes, encourage Kinugawa to express his thoughts, and call out U~chan when he refuses to cooperate…

Yukikaze: It’s wonderful how much you care for your friends.

Nanaki: A-Anyone else would do the same!! But thank you!!

(These big brothers that’ll slap you in the chest with praise don’t play around…!!)

Momiji: But don’t people that care for others tend to hide themselves away more?

Nanaki: …!

Momiji: Nanaki-kun, I want you to know that you don’t have to be afraid to tell me anything!

Nanaki: Ah…of course…

Yukikaze: My caring little brother, you can tell me anything too.

Nanaki: T-Thank you.

(...I know I hold myself back, but it's not so much out of consideration for others as it is about being scared that I'll get hurt...)

…Anything, huh?

Kafka: I’m a little concerned…do you think we’ll be able to fall asleep again once we get back to the house?

Nanaki: (I don’t have the courage for that yet—)

Momiji: O-Oh no…I feel like I’m running on an entire night’s rest…

Nanaki: (...As much as I like your sleeping face, your smile really is my favourite.)

A long post on a life update-30th July 2024

⚠️ Trigger warning for mentions of cyber b*llying, b*llying; ab*se and also how does the internet does feels like a dark & scary place plus mentions of d*pr*ss**n as well as a result of loss of life.

Read this with caution when you are reading this individual post on here.

Heard the news of how C*rlos is going to replace Logan who has been my comfort driver for a very long time and honestly; it does truthfully angers me especially when we are truthfully talking about the part where there are people (Especially when we are truly talking about the t*xic people who are feeling truthfully happy to see Logan go which does truthfully angers me a lot to the point where it makes me want to quietly r*p*rt them for b*llying and ab*se as well as h*te as well to be honest) whom they are feeling truthfully h*ppy to see him (Logan) go and having to be truly replaced by C*rlos.

I know I have nothing against C*rlos however when it comes to free agency side of F1; I do feel as if this is a merry go round ride I do wanted to truthfully get off both this t*xic merry go round ride and the scary t*xic roller coaster ride as already I am feeling truthfully upset and deeply saddened by what I am hearing the news about how Logan is going to truthfully be replaced by C *rlos and then instead of thanking him; in reality; there are so many people whom they would just criticize him and also yet having to feel that evil satisfaction of how he (Logan) is getting replaced by C*rlos and honestly; I am feeling very angered; hurt and upset by what I am truthfully hearing right now.

And honestly; it does truthfully hurts me and angers me when I did heard the people who would do nothing but to simply waste all of their own precious time to truthfully criticize someone like Logan and yet having to evilly just praise the replace of C*rlos and this does truthfully hurts so many people (Including me, myself and I selfishly) on how he (Logan) is going to be truthfully replaced by C*rlos and honestly; I know the next point I am going to truthfully say is going to be an irrelevant note but sometimes I don't truthfully blame Logan at this point in his very own life especially when we are talking about the part where he is going to be truthfulyl replaced for the next season dejectedly; but honestly and oddly, I am feeling thsnkful that he didn't definitely use Twitter/ X despite how he has an account; the last thing on my mind was to definitely think about how he (Logan) react when he read all of those t*xi*c comments out there online and yet to dig a deeper hole into the grave; the w*rst thing for me is tor truthfully hear that he wopuld read those comments and yet having to truthfully experience any early signs of d*pr*ss**n.

Also, on an irrelevant note; I sometimes think the internet can be also a very dark and scary place as well especially with all of the cyber b*llying online and the online h*rr*ssment everyone had to gone through every single day in their very own life and yet one of the worst things to truthfully experience is having to read both h*te and the b*llying comments about how you aren't being 'good' enough for anyone or anybody else in general and this does deeply saddens me especially as a person who had went through a real life experience of being b*llied and also having to be an actually b*lly as well in general.

On another note: I do want to truly wish Logan well in his other endeavors wherever he goes along with sending him unconditional prayers that may god bless him unconditionally wherever he goes additionally on another yet an irrelevant note as well; I do wish more people can learn how to truthfully have more compassion and more knowledge by having to truly know their life story instead of having to truthfully simply judge them for nothing and yet just simply having to waste their own time by having to criticize him and to also b*lly anyone or anybody online in general until they truthfully lost their life.

Plus instead of wasting your time just simply cyber b*llying towards someone you don't truthfully know very well and yet wasting more time by having to truly write out h*te posts about them; why not you go focus on elsewhere and just invest in your very own life on both endeavors and other interests you do want to truthfully pursue in your very own life for a very long time.

It is simple as that.

Very long post but I did wanted to get something off from my chest and also having to truthfully share my own thoughts on here as well and yet having to truthfully let everyone know about how sometimes the internet can be also a dark and scary place in general sometimes as sometimes it can be so scary to truly experience both cyber b*llying and ab*se.

A blast from fandoms past today. These were the days…

Mpreg is my kryptonite. Seriously. If there’s ever a ship you want me to check out, and you want an absolute guarantee that I’ll read it? Drop me an mpreg fic. I may or may not enjoy it, but I will NEVER be able to resist the siren call of mpreg. You’d think I’d be more drawn to ABO as a result, but eh. Anyway.

The dynamic here is so good. I love McFassy fics where James is something of a lil shit. Because let’s face it - he absolutely is, lol. His restlessness is so well conveyed; I’ve never been (and never will be) pregnant, but somehow I still know how he feels. And Michael being the softer, perhaps more caring one of the two is lovely. He’s certainly a tad bit overprotective, but luckily for him, it’s endearing. Their relationship is so affectionate and playful. It’s a genuine pleasure to read these two guys just existing in the world and loving each other, eagerly awaiting the birth of their child.

I love the changing names for their kiddo too, shifting as they try different ones out. That kid, when they’re born, will be so fucking cherished and adored. Also, if you read other fics of this ship by one of these writers, you start to recognize familiar tropes. Those tropes are like a warm blanket for me whenever I reread this. Reminds me of a time, years ago, when we were all just enjoying reading, writing, and experiencing the relationship - friendly, sexual, and all points in between - of these two actors. Fun times, my dudes.

DIY: ESP32-CAM Module for Flipper Zero

Here's a simple add-on module that you can build easily for just a few dollars. Essentially, you just need to connect 4 wires between the ESP32-CAM module and Flipper Zero, then flash the firmware.

This module allows you to use it with apps like Marauder, Camera, Morse Flasher, etc. The nice thing about using ESP32-CAM is that the module already has micro SD card slot built in, in addition to the camera and LED. This setup is also referred to as Mayhem board.

You can find the ESP32-CAM module on various e-commerce sites like Amazon, Aliexpress, etc. for just a few dollars. Note that you only need the ESP32-CAM module itself, the top module in the photo below. You don't need the Micro USB to Serial Port module (bottom module). Many sellers sell both items together as a bundle.

I used a breadboard below for demonstration purposes, but you can make this permanent and smaller by soldering it on a prototype board.

First, here are the connections you need to make. You can even use jumper wires to directly connect the ESP32-CAM module to Flipper Zero.

After plugging your module into Flipper Zero, we need to flash the firmware on the ESP32-CAM module. To do that, connect your Flipper Zero to your computer using a data cable (use the cable that came with your Flipper Zero if unsure). Then, on your Flipper Zero, open GPIO > USB-UART Bridge. It should show Pin 13 for TX, Pin 14 for RX. If it doesn't, press the Left arrow button to go into Config and change UART Pins to 13,14. Next, you need to connect pin IO0 and GND (put something metal like the tip of a screwdriver to connect these 2 pins) on the ESP32-CAM, then press and let go the RST button under the ESP32-CAM module, then disconnect pin IO0 from GND. If you do this correctly, the next step will work. If it doesn't, try again.

Now, point your Chrome/Microsoft Edge browser to this site and click INSTALL. In the popup, select your Flipper Zero and click Connect.

Now, you should see the firmware being flashed. When done, you can disconnect your Flipper Zero from your computer and exit USB-UART Bridge on your Flipper Zero.

If you have already installed third party firmware like Xtreme or RogueMaster, the apps you need to use this module is already installed under GPIO and you can use it right away. Otherwise, you will need to install the apps yourself using the links provided in the above firmware install website. Do connect your Flipper Zero to your computer to install those apps.

A quick note on the Korean names - I’m fine with however you choose to transliterate them. Hyphen/no hyphen, slight differences in romanisation, etc. Just do what you are comfortable with and I’ll adjust no problem.

My likes:

I love getting together fics most of all. I love almost every kind of trope (fake dating, slow burn, enemies/rivals-to-lovers, trapped together, there’s only one bed, “unrequited” pining (that is really requited), found families, etc.) I also like casefic, epistolary fic, consent, beta heroes, competence, communication, U/RST, positive endings.

You may notice from the below that my ships mostly involve broken but good-hearted men being secretly head over heels for badass ladies, (and usually not feeling worthy). So that dynamic is strongly encouraged.

Happy endings (or at least hopeful endings) are preferred. Like, super, super preferred. I don’t mind angst at all, but it kinda has to be on the way out of the darkness by the end.

I also like smut, but it certainly isn’t a necessity. For smut, I’m (sadly) fairly vanilla. But I like light bondage, cunnilingus, shower sex, and accidental/consensual voyeurism, (Particularly guys taking matters into their own hands when they think they can’t be with their lady, and the woman stumbling across him mid-act. Writer’s choice whether the woman joins in or gets embarrassed)

Dislikes/DNWs:

Miserable endings. Death of a requested character. Humiliation. Drug use/drug mentions/addiction. Self harm/abuse. Non-con/rape. Heavy kink. Animal harm. Underage sexual content.

Jung Seok/Min Jung

While maybe objectively not as good a film as the first one, I still enjoyed the hell out of it. Given that it was essentially a cross between Escape From New York and Mad Max, what isn’t to love? I loved the expansion of the world and the clever uses of zombies in the chase scenes. And I really liked the idea that anything can mean happiness when you love and are loved in return - particularly in regards to Joon Yi, but also Jung Seok (and his found family?).

Mostly I just want Jung Seok and Min Jung to kiss. I think they'd help each other heal and be stronger together as a team. While they did grow throughout the movie, they probably have a little more growing to do before they are ready to be together, and they might always be a little dysfunctional, given their traumas. It would be impossible to entirely smooth away all those sharp points they've developed. But they'd understand each other in a way no one else would.

What would interest me the most in this fandom is post-movie fics. But if you wanna do a canon divergent/au thing, I’d be cool with that, too.

Some prompts:

In order to stay together after being rescued, Jung Seok and Min Jung have to pretend to be married.

Jung Seok’s POV when he realises he loves Min Jung.

After four long years of loneliness, Min Jung just wants to be touched. Maybe they start a physical relationship that slowly morphs into an emotional one.

Neither would be particularly verbally demonstrative. How do they show they care about the other without saying "I love you?"

Jung Seok isn’t surprised to find himself in love with Min Jung - and wanting to be a father to her girls - but is he good enough for them? He’s left them behind once - can he forgive himself? Can Min Jung?

The zombie plague escapes from Korea - and Jung Seok, Min Jung, and her girls are the closest thing to experts on how to fight back and contain it that the authorities have. Will their nightmare never be over? Or is this a chance to end it once and for all?

With Min Jung in hospital while her leg heals, Jung Seok suddenly finds himself a surrogate father to two very unruly girls.

Practical Arrangement - Sting (Song)

Man/Woman

I received a great fic for this song for Yuletide, which you can find here. I’m requesting it again purely because there is so much scope here to work with, and so many different interpretations you could go with. And I want them all!

I mean…this song just screams marriage of convenience story, right? I love this trope, particularly when it’s two practical people going into the arrangement for logical reasons…only to find feelings somehow got involved. It’s a perfect set up for slow burn, pining, forced proximity, and all that good stuff.

I think in this song in particular the man might be lying to himself from the very beginning about this being a platonic arrangement. I don’t have any headcanons for their names so feel free to call the characters what you want!

Some prompts:

At what point does either character realise they have feelings for the other? How did they get there? With lots of pining and classic tropes? Do they have to play a couple outside of the house, or is this strictly a legal arrangement?

How do they meet? What happens to the woman that either character thinks this is a logical solution? How bad of a situation is she in?

Why is he lonely enough to propose this solution? Or has he secretly loved her for a long time and only wants to help her? How does the intimacy of marriage and a “warm house to return to” change things for him, even if it’s meant to be platonic? Can going through the motions of intimacy and sharing a home lead to real and lasting feelings?

How long does the “separate beds” promise last? Do they decide that for the duration of their marriage that they will satisfy each other in the bedroom as well? Or do they absolutely never touch given their promise of platonicness?

How does he bond with her son? Do they do things together as a family or mostly lead separate lives?

It sounds like she’s a disaster in the kitchen. Is he a good cook? Does she learn to after all in an act of finding herself? Or does she finally let herself be taken care of for once?

A historical AU? Maybe she’s a titled widow fallen on hard times, and he’s of the rich merchant class and still not considered good enough for her in the eyes of society.

Maybe it’s a Beauty and the Beast scenario? He’s disfigured or magically enchanted but she marries him to save herself and her son. It turns out he’s not as bad as the stories claimed.

If you want to turn this on your head, you can. Maybe the narrator of the song is a creep and/or a stalker and she actually has to get away from him and falls in love with someone else!

고요의 바다 | The Silent Sea

Han Yoon Jae/Song Ji An

So, I requested this for Yuletide, and got two excellent fics here and here. There was a third one in the collection that was also excellent, too! Right here. Normally, when I am so blessed with fics for a tiny fandom like that, I feel like the itch has been scratched, so to speak. But (un)fortunately, in this case, the fics were so good that it made me ship this pairing so much more.

It’s a crime that they didn’t kiss in this, honestly. Two of my favourite Korean actors (Bae Doo Na and Gong Yoo) in one show, buckets of chemistry, and nary a romance! Gong Yoo was at his hottest, too, with the neck tattoo and attitude. (Bae Doo Na is, of course, always at her hottest.)

They are both smart and know what’s up. I feel like they’d make a good couple. And the tension between them, particularly in the beginning, just makes it hotter. Most of these prompts presume that Yoon Jae was rescued at the end there with the others, of course.

Some prompts:

I’m envisioning a whole scenario where she marries him to share her status to save his daughter and they fall in love. They need to make it convincing or it’s basically fraud, so they move in together and pretend to be a couple… Maybe this happens after their adventure, or maybe it’s an AU where they never went to space, or they marry before they go and then they go to the moon.

There was a lot of tension between them. And sometimes there’s only one surefire way to ease that tension…in a maintenance closet.

What happens when they get back to earth? Inevitably, paperwork and bureaucracy. But maybe also they need to save the world? Again?

Additional bonding time in space, before or during everything going to hell. They have a lot of trauma they can share/bond over.

How do they work together to protect Earth after everything they've been through? Does it bring them closer together? Does the water crisis get solved or are things worse than ever?

What happens to Luna? Do they become her surrogate parents? She’s not really human, so what kind of difficulties does that present? How do they explain her presence in the rescue craft to their superiors? Once back in the real world, do they have to pretend she’s normal? This could either be very fraught or rather comedic depending how you want to play it.

Ji An and Yoon Jae have to quarantine together for a few weeks after getting off the moon.

Feel free to do some worldbuilding! The scenario is both terrifyingly realistic and completely apocalyptic. How else is it different from our world? How is it the same? What is going on outside of the limited scope we see?

Christmas Class Reunion (2022)

Elle/Devin

Originally, I saw this Hallmark movie and just thought it was okay. I didn't fall head over heels for it. But the more I thought about it, the more I liked the idea of it. Maybe it didn’t entirely stick the landing but it had all the elements to make a great romance.

Devin used to be a goofy class clown, and now he’s grown up into being a responsible, respectable, single-dad. But he’s perhaps still dealing with that old high school feeling of not quite being good enough. Particularly not for a girl as smart and driven as Elle. He still retains a little bit of his goofiness, but he’s definitely matured a lot. Throughout the movie, Elle’s modern, forward-thinking ways help Devin push himself that little more.

Elle, on the other hand, has always been responsible and ambitious, and until now has been dating guys just like her. Now that the perfect life she’d worked so hard for is starting to fall apart, she’s reassessing her priorities and maybe just…chilling out a little. She feels like she still has to put up a front, but not so much around Devin, who seems to like her just as she is and whose slight goofiness helps her mellow.

They definitely wouldn’t have worked as a couple in high school, but they had both changed a lot in the intervening 15 years, to the point where they’d kind of met in the middle of their two personality extremes, purely by chance. Maybe they still had a bit of growing left to do, but it’s clear that they were in a place where they were ready to be together and make it work.

I'm a lot more interested in where they are now with themselves and each other as opposed to flashing back to their high school years for an entire fic, but I don't mind if you mention or feature scenes from that time to illustrate their development.

Some prompts:

First Christmas together, so soon in their new relationship. Or maybe a series of big days throughout their first year, like first Valentine's, before their engagement. Or maybe many Christmases over the years, to see how they evolve.

The movie kind of cops out by not answering how Elle deals with the fallout from work, and the fact that Elle and Devin live in different cities. I don't feel like there's necessarily an easy answer to any of it, so how is all that resolved?

A missing scene where Devin pines for Elle. Maybe he'd always had a crush on her and didn't feel worthy back then, and those feelings of inadequacy are coming back because he finds 33 year old Elle even smarter and prettier and more incredible than teenaged Elle.

I think these tags basically speak for themselves, but just in case you want some guidance I’ll give some ideas below.

Badass Woman/The Equally Badass Man Who Secretly Loves Her

Most of the major ships I’ve had throughout my life fall into this category. Terminator’s Sarah Connor/Kyle Reese, Mad Max: Fury Road’s Max/Furiosa, Aliens’ Ripley/Dwayne Hicks, even Peninsula’s Jung Seok/Min Jung listed above. Whatever you write doesn’t need to be an action sci-fi story, though! I’m equally happy with a contemporary rom com where they are CEOs or a single-mother inn owner and a handyman or whatever. There are many ways to be a badass.

As for the story itself? Anything where the hero is quietly enamoured by how competent and capable she is, but doesn’t feel worthy of her, is what I’m after here. So, maybe she gives him a surprising confession. He's loved her for a long time, how did they meet? Maybe they have to kiss/share a bed/work on a mission together and it makes the feelings come to a head. Maybe he confesses to her in a moment of weakness and is surprised when she tells him she feels the same. Maybe they used to be spies or vigilantes together. Like, she was married to his best friend, and the three of them used to work together. Then the best friend dies and they blame themselves and fall out of touch. They have to reunite years later and he’s still carrying a secret torch for her and doesn’t realise she feels the same. There are plenty of routes you can take with this!

Male Soldier Deployed Overseas/His Female Penpal That He's Never Met

For this one, I was thinking something along the lines of the Hallmark movies The Christmas Card or Holiday for Heroes. She sends him a Christmas card or package and they start exchanging letters. He doesn't have much family, and so her letters really mean something to him. Or maybe she's looking after his dog while he's deployed and she sends him photos of his beloved pet, and they get talking. Or maybe this is set in 19th C England, and he writes to inform her of her brother's death, and his comforting words really touch her heart. I just really like epistolary romances! And I really like that moment when they see each other in person for the first time and realise that maybe those feelings that had been developing weren’t so crazy after all. It was all real.

Reality Show Producer/Reality Show Contestant Who Knows It's Mostly Fake But Plays Along

Again, this prompt was inspired by a Hallmark movie, this time Love, For Real. I really liked that he was attracted to her smarts and cynicism since he was feeling pretty jaded about reality shows himself. There's a lot of potential conflict considering falling for a contestant is unprofessional and against the rules. But I obviously don’t want fic of that movie, it’s mostly just the vibes.

Author’s pick of the type of reality show. Cooking competition? Dating show? Maybe it's a friends to lovers story where the producer convinces their friend to join up to help out and they see new sides to each other. Maybe she's the producer and he's the best friend/contestant, a la the Kdrama Love is for Suckers. Maybe it's a Survivor style show and they get “lost” in the wilderness together. Maybe one of them is a celebrity playing up a superficial image for a show, and the producer sees the real, likeable person who comes out when the cameras are off.

19th Century Male Detective/The Clever and Meddlesome Woman Who Gets in His Way

I’m just a sucker for mysteries with a female protagonist or co-lead set in the Victorian era, with a male detective or private investigator that works with her. I love the way the women have to work against and within the system but then use people’s expectations against them. The detective will often be able to work openly in the public sphere when investigating, but the woman works subtly, behind the scenes, in the private sphere. Those two skills end up complementing each other to the point that the crime couldn’t be solved or the criminal brought to justice without either of them. The fact that these stories often lend themselves to having clever, bookish heroines who everyone underestimates, plus a lot of banter with the detective, is just icing on the cake.

For specific ideas, maybe she writes him a letter with information about a crime - he initially dismisses her but is intrigued. Maybe they meet at a crime scene and he’s suspicious because she seems to know so much. Maybe he thinks she or someone close to her is a culprit and she’s trying to prove him wrong. Maybe he goes to her about a case because she has some specific expert knowledge, but she insists on getting far more involved than he intended.

A Very Mateo Navidad

Note: Don’t let the title fool you, I’m bringing the angst baby.

“C’mon, get moving!” A guard yelled impatiently from outside the house.

7 year old Mateo’s small hands shook as his mother and he tried to act like it was a normal meal. As of they didn’t have any ornaments, presents and a tree stuffed in the closet behind junk chairs and other assorted items.

The old holidays were forbidden. His mother had told him the queen that currently sat on the throne had taken it wrongly by force. She was evil and she knew she wasn’t beloved. That’s why she banned all things that could threaten her rule. Magic, wizards like his abuelo. Holidays like Navidad that people loved for the joy it brought yet only gave the queen a headache.

His mother and a few other rebellious villagers continued to celebrate these traditions, teaching old ways, songs and dances. Most years they were able to secretly celebrate. Sometimes travelling to far villages where guards were scarce.

But this year, something was different. Marlena sent a message that guards were checking houses this year. His mom had hidden all the items once she had heard and told him to go on with his day, act normal. Now it was dinner and they had heard the harsh growl of Shuriki’s loyal elite guards. Screams, and the crunch of glass breaking underfoot from their neighbors.

Mateo felt tears creeping up and the images in front of him started to get blurry as fears started to grip his mind. Of guards taking his mother away, of being thrown to the guard like his father all those years ago. Whom he never saw again.

He swiped at his eyes quickly. Mami said to act normal and hope that the guards would be careless in searching or ignore them completely.

But it was hard, and he was scared.

Their kitchen was cheerful in the light. The colorful tiles that were worn with age and care, the delicious smell of empanadas permeated the air. But the coziness was tainted by the caphocanic noise. The screaming of a woman, the shouts and yells of the guard.

“Worthless piece of trash. Let’s see if this has anything.” A guard snarled, pushing open their door with a bang.

The face, white with anger, was contorted in meanness. Like a gargoyle from one of his picture books when his teachers taught him about the architecture of other kingdoms in comparison to Avalor’s.

Another guard came in a bit more cautiously but he was clearly as rough as his partner when he strode straight to the closet and tried to force open the lock.

Mateo huddled himself, wishing there was some way to blend in with the chair, hoping that this would all be over soon. Sometimes he wished his mother wasn’t so brave. Not when they could get caught. He just wanted to hide under the bed.

“Shit! Shit! Shit!” The guard cursed once he got the door open and a chair almost fell on top of him. He slammed the door back just in time and internally Mateo breathed a sigh of relief.

“Don’t curse in front of my son!” Rafa yelled as the other guard barged through the rst of the house.

The one with the gargoyle face spat in her direction, prompting Mateo to bury his face in his mother’s arms. In the soft cotton, the sounds were muffled and he could pretend this was all faraway. Rafa lovingly rubbed small circles in his back but ater awhile, she released him and wiped his eyes. He hadn’t realized he was crying.

The house was eerily quiet after the guard’s absence.

“I’m sorry, Mami.” Mateo mumbled, tears still silently streaking down his face. He hated disappointing his mom, he tried so hard to be brave but. .

“It’s okat, mi amor. You did your best. I’m sorry you had to see those-those pu-” she caught herself, “Those bad men. I’m sorry Navidad was like this.”

Mateo went to his room. The painting of home with his momm and him in front of it was ripped. Drawers were open and clothes and wooden toys were strewn across the floor.

They. . they had tossed his stuff like trash. Their voices, their meanness as they went through their house like it was a gutter and treated them like nuisances echoed in his head. They were the real monsters. They had ruined Navidad, they took it all away.

Just like they took Papi.

A long time ago he learned to cry silently because he didn’t want to worry his mom. He saw her worried eyes, always looking at him as if he might hurt himself.

He hid under his blanket, just sobbing and waiting for the weight in his chest to unsettle itself, until he could breath normally without feelings of nausea. Once, he felt his throat not constrict, he left.

He tiptoed as quietly as he could to his mom’s room. He was always welcome but sometimes he went his mother didn’t know.

He ducked into her closet and opened a small wooden box that was hidden under silk dresses that were too fancy for daily use.

The box had a crystal, an opaque chain with a shiny gold star. This was his father’s box. He knew that because the necklace read Nicholas y Rafa. These must have been gifts they shared. There was a small book about pocket size, with indecipherable writing. It didn’t look Avaloran though. Maybe a different language, he hoped he would get to learn it in school.

He looked at the necklace again and sighed. He missed his Papi and nights like these were when he missed him the most. He’d ask stories about past Navidads and his mom would tell her of her childhood or the first Navidad she spent with him. But she’d never mention Papi in her stories.

One time he had asked. It was a few months after Papi had been arrested and Mami was acting like everything was normal even though she never talked about him. It was as if he never existed. Mami said she still loved his dad. So much that it hurt. So please. . .

Mateo never asked again. He saw the look in her eyes. A sort of sad emptiness. He didn’t want to see it again. His mom was always strong, but seeing her sad and hopeless scared him more than those soldiers.

But still, he sometimes wished he could ask Mami about Papi. If only to know more about him. He had so few memories.

The only one he had was on that night three years ago.

It had been dark, and Mateo had been soundly asleep until he heard crashing and huffing when he realized his dad was crouched next to him with a hasty kiss to his head. There had been no moon that night so he didn’t see his dad’s face. It was all shadows like his hazy memories.

Papi had left without a word and Mateo tried to follow. Mami came at that moment and told him to stay in his room. Her voice was different, she sounded scared and that made Mateo scared enough to stay in his room.

But curiosity got hold of him when he heard new raised voices and his mother sobbing. He crept out of his room, his door unlocked in his Mami’s haste to reach her husband.

Big, mena looking guard roughly picked up Papi from the floor after a man took his boot off his back. They were shoving him around like he was a criminal, hitting him against the wall and doorway. His dad hung his head like he was ashamed of himself and another guard held his mother back. She was yelling he wasn’t a rebel. They weren’t doing anything wrong.

“That’s what they all say,” the guard muttered and without looking back, they all left.

He never saw Papi again.

Mami didn’t know that he had seen. He didn’t tell her that he had disobeyed. But he had asked where Papi went and she said Papi wasn’t returning. No one could return from the Spirit World.

She had that empty look in her eyes. . .

Yet he wanted to know more. Why Papi and no one else’s dad in the village? Had he done something wrong? He wanted Papi to come back. Since Mami was so tough and brave, maybe she could get all the way to the Spirit World and bring Papi home? Most of all, he wanted to be like all the other kids that had two parents and knew if he looked more like one or the other. If he acted more like one or the other.

Mateo didn’t feel like other kids. He wasn’t as good at sports, he preferred to read and learn more about magic that the abuelo he never met used to do. It sounded so cool and when Mami showed him abuelo’s tamborita, something inside him hummed. It felt right and when he told Mami about that feeling, she smiled worriedly and said he was special like his abuelo. But he was not allowed to do the magic. Maybe later. She’d tell him when.

Maybe Papi had been a wizard too?

“I love you Papi. I hope you’re having a good time in the Spirit World. I miss you.”

He felt his finger scratch on something he hadn’t felt before on the necklace.

He crawled out of the closet to stand by the window in the room. The moonlight cast some light on the item so he could read.

“Love is the magic within.”

It faded quickly after. As if the moonlight was magic itself, revealing invisible letters. He held the necklace up to the light again and again to see if the message would return but it didn’t.

Maybe the message had been just for him? Maybe Papi was listening!

He smiled, liking the idea of having a secret with Papi and put the necklace and box back where he ound it.

His stomach growled and he went to the kitchen in hopes that Mami still had the stew they hadn’t touched out.

But there was much more than that. Lights gleamed along the walls and curtains, a dozen candles lit the Christmas tree that Rafa had set up once more. The lack of ornaments on the tree created an unearthly image as he could barely see the pine from the lights. Under it were a few sparsely wrapped packages and a gingerbread house that caused Mateo’s stomach to grumble even louder.

And there Mami was sitting under it all, “Matito! Feliz Navidad!”

Mateo ran into his mother’s arms, his eyes alight with how quickly she set up the Navidad decorations again. That they still would be able to celebrate as before.

“Thank you, Mami!” Mateo hugged her tighter and Rafa stroked his curls, “Anything for you, mi amor.” “I-I thought we weren’t going to do it at all. . . because of the guards?” Mateo questioned.

Rafa nodded, “I was thinking if the same, but the guard left. Nothing happened and now we can go on as planned. Know why?”

Mateo shook his head. “Because our familia was watching from the Spirit World. They help us when we need it. They always have our backs for even when they’re not here, they are. In spirit.”

Mateo never forgot that.

Years later, Mateo stepped back from under a sprig of mistletoe, his mind dazed with the sweetness and blissful feeling Elena had left him with after they kissed. Just like every time they kissed.

Elena moved along with him, plastering her body against his and she nuzzled into the crook of his neck, never losing the warmth of her body.

“Feliz Navida, mi amor,” She said with a loving look and a bit of a wicked glint in her eye, letting him know she had other presents in store for him.

“Feliz Navidad,” Mateo answered, looking around the room at her family and their friends and his mom who was indiscreetly clapping for him before going to talk to Luisa. Probably about their upcoming nuptials that weren’t happening yet. It had only been a year of courting, but that was his mom, planning for the future.

A happy future, Mateo knew. One where he felt like he could do anything with Elena by his side, and his family having his back.

All of his family.

“Feliz Navidad, Papi.”
