Apollo grinned as he held up the glass orb, standing among the rest of the Gods as they chattered. And then, he let go.

[Chapter 22]

Everyone fell silent as the sound of glass shattering cut through the air, halting all the formerly lively chatter. Demeter paled, rushing forward. Her fingers made contact with the once beautiful sunflower, who's petals crumbled under her touch. "No..." The shock and despair was palpable as her voice broke the silence. Apollo looked at Zephyrus, a smug expression on his face. The west wind raised an eyebrow. "Sorry, am I supposed to care?" He asked, annoyance tinging his words. "Am I supposed to care about some stupid flower?"

The grin dropped from Apollo's face as not Kiara, but Azura collapsed. Kiara pushed her father aside, staring at the broken glass and wilting sunflower with pain in her eyes. Tears welled up, falling to her knees next to the lifeless form of Azura. Her fingers trailed through the gold feathers, trying to savour the touch and warmth as long as possible. "Az...?" Kiara muttered, voice soft. She moved her hands to Azura's shoulders, gently shaking the Goddess in an attempt to rouse her.

Trembling, the Sunflower Goddess's hand squeezed Kiara's, a silent attempt at reassurance. "Move! Out of the way!" Helios's sharp voice cut through the air as he pulled Kiara away, taking her place next to Azura. The wind Goddess longed to protest, yell at him for not being here earlier, but she decided otherwise as her gaze fell on his eyes. Red from crying and actively producing tears as he sobbed silently. Wordlessly, the Sun took his daughter into his loving embrace, burying his nose in her hair, taking in the smell. She smelled just like the small baby she was when he left her. She might've grown, but to Helios, she was still his little Azura.

Demeter watched as he cradled the sunflower's limo body, before turning away, resting her head in the crook of Hestia's neck as the Hearth Goddess attempted to console her little sister. She wasn't sure if Demeter could take losing another daughter, seeing as had lost Kore already, and could barely keep herself together while Persephone was in the underworld. Hestia whispered soft words of consolation, rubbing her sister's back. "She'll be okay. Persephone will take care of her soul in the underworld."

This only made Demeter cry harder. She lost both her beloved daughters to the realm of her brother. And the chance Hades would return either of them was smaller than the chance Zeus would ever be loyal. Her hands grabbed Hestia's dress, holding onto the fabric like a lifetime. "We'll talk to Hades, okay? Make sure she is well-cared for, even if Persephone is with us. Azura will be okay." The Goddess of the Hearth whispered. Slowly, Demeter stopped shaking, although refusing to let go of her sister.

"Azura? Mi pequeña flor? Amor? Girasol? Wake up! Wake up..." Helios uttered, voice soft. His calloused hands strooked her cheek, a lone tear rolling down Azura's face, which had formed when she'd realised she was dying. The Sun pressed a soft kiss on her forehead, a goodbye to the daughter he never said hello to.

#uhhh idk how to explain this idea right#but like....i think stories should be allowed to have mistakes. for a treat#it's like in tv shows when they had to save the budget for the final so there's reused costumes for los stake episodes#can't think of a single story thats perfect. wouldn't change anything. literally can't make a story with no flaws#sometimes the easy way around the flaw is just 'you gotta ignore that. that's not the point of the story.'#i feel like some stuff if you try and stop to explain it...it will change the focus of the story. suddenly it's a new story#like inception. entering and creating dreams is just a thing. the story just uses it. stop to explain how or why and that's something else#there wouldn't be space for the og story itd be a story about the creation of this thing#and like. listen. there are definitely some big plot holes. some poorly written stories. not saying bad stories are just misunderstood#but idk. i think you gotta stop wanting it to be flawless. that's never gonna happen#idk it's midnight hm#text#august rambles#also i tried to move a tag and it didn't work. so if the order of things doesn't make sense that's why#critical analysis hater spotted eek!#no but actually. i do like picking apart problems in stories and figuring out why it feels wrong or how to fix it#but it's almost like you gotta pick your battles. you only get to fix a few#or like. if the story is fine except for this one thing. we just don't look at that#the holes are giving it room to breathe#i gotta stop talking yikes

Also I think there’s a huge difference between ‘This plot hole is here because the author was a poor writer’ and ‘This plot hole is here because (just like you said) our energy isn’t supposed to be focused on that’.

One of these means that the author needs to improve in this area of their craft, and the other means that if you’re getting nitpicky over a minute detail that doesn’t matter all that much you are missing the point of what they WERE trying to say and that’s on you.

ok idea. what if we gave stories a free pass for one or two plot holes. "this story thread had a big hole in it" ok good to know, that must not be the main point of the story since it's got plot holes. they must have put their attention on what they thought was the important part. time to look closer at the other parts

I have a fun theory-ish thing I've been brewing up and that is that refraction railways serve as the actual thematic connections between cantos. I can't speak much for the first two railways, but railway 3 had the 'mirrorclock orangeroad' theme before going into canto 6, in T corp.

And more recently, railway 4, masquerade. Beyond the obvious connection in name alone to the bloodfiends in la Manchaland all wearing masks, there's also some really interesting parallels between it and Canto 7 with the names of the first and last stops being banquet and feast respectively, the envy peccatulum who shallowly try and replicate humanity, dreaming electric sheep which reflects a question on humanity...

And THEN there's the King in Binds.

The king bound to his throne, decaying. And yet not physically trapped, as we see when he chooses to leave of his own volition to battle us, but rather presumably bound out of some sense of duty. Who throws his vassals at us in the first stage of the fight before choosing to take things into his own hands.

thinking about kab and the thing about her i think is she knows just enough to keep herself safe Generally but not enough to really predict what would happen should something more... complicated??? unforeseen??? idk whats the right word to use but something not covered by someones reputation and/or vids happen, believe it or not this also affects her view of clownpierce (we'll get to that)

for example, mapicc has a reputation for being an violent, angry, & impulsive guy and nothing else which makes sense but is incredibly surface level and something that only really works if you dont have a lot of experience working with him

another is reddoons, his betrayal after the base incident while shocking is not unforeseen but his reputation as being a guy whos seen as being a reasonable person whos fairly loyal to his team made it seem like something he wouldnt do even tho it absolutely is

regarding how it affects her view of clown, since he isnt perfectly aligned with his reputation she instead pivots in the complete opposite direction and forgiving basically every crime he does even tho hes something much more mild and complicated than either his reputation or her view of him will ever be (think madonna-whore complex which is especially obvious when it comes to kabs vs woogies view of him)

another side effect of this Just Enough amount of knowledge aside from being blinded by her own expectations is that it frustrates ppl who think shes oversimplificating things (like me and seemingly several other tumblr users as well) especially when she claims that shes objectively correct and the smartest in the room at any given moment

how this roughness in her analysis affects her in the server still has yet to be fully seen but we do still have at least a couple months until the end but 'til then shes just gonna keep stumbling as more and more complicated situations pop up as is typical in lifesteal to happen and eventually shes gonna have to learn to adapt or else she'll be suffering the consequences one way or another

Gonna add a greyscale version, the sketch this was based on under the cut, but all I really have to say about this is that this is the first time in a long time. Maybe even years. That I've sketched up a simple doodle and had it grab me by the soul and rip and illustration out of me. This is also the first illustration in a long time where I enjoyed the whole process. I also tried different techniques and stuff here and I'm in love with how this turned out actually
