The 50 Best Places to Travel in 2023
With much of the world reopened, 2023 is shaping up to be the year travel officially bounces back. We made our list of the 50 best destinations for 2023 a little differently this year: We asked Travel + Leisure’s editors where they want to go in the months ahead. Some are raring to get back to Japan, while others have the Trans-Bhutan Trail on their lists. Still more are planning a sail around Greenland, a wine-tasting trip on California’s central coast, and a visit to France’s next big wine region (which is, as it happens, tiny).
A few up-and-coming culinary destinations made our list, as did a remarkable piece of art, the size and scale of which boggles the imagination. While many of the team’s picks are remote, breathe-in-that-fresh-air kinds of places, our list doesn’t skimp on cities where the hustle and bustle is part of the fun.
But with so many choices now back on the map, there are as many styles of trips as there are places to explore. That’s why, for the first time in recent memory, we’ve broken our list of best places to go into categories.
The hope is that, whatever it is you’re after in the year ahead, you’ll find it in one of these 50 places. And who knows? We may just see you there.
For Cultural Riches Alexandria, Virginia
With postcard-perfect cobblestone streets and quick access to the wineries of northern Virginia, Alexandria is an easy city to love. But these days, the reason to go is to see how effectively the city is confronting its own history, as destinations across the American South grapple with the legacy of the Confederacy. Alexandria, which was founded as a tobacco port in 1749, was for decades of the 19th century the site of the country’s largest domestic slave trade. Today, the Freedom House Museum has three new exhibitions honoring the people who were forcibly brought here. Meanwhile, the African American Heritage Trail, which opened in 2020, follows the Potomac River and encompasses nearly 200 years of history at 11 stops, such as the Torpedo Factory, where many Black men and women worked during World War II. An extension of the route will debut in February 2023 with 20 new stops, including Waterfront Park, the port from which enslaved people were trafficked to places like New Orleans. At Jones Point Park, visitors can learn about Benjamin Banneker, an inventor, mathematician, and free African American from Maryland who was instrumental in the 1791 surveying team that determined the border of the new U.S. capital of Washington, D.C. (For an even deeper look at the city’s Black experience, book with Manumission Tours, which is run by a fourth-generation Alexandrian.) The city’s most elegant stay is Morrison House Old Town Alexandria, Autograph Collection, which was recently voted one of the best city hotels in the continental U.S. in T+L’s 2022 World’s Best Awards. Cairo and the Nile
It’s almost here: After more than a decade of construction — to say nothing of the hype — the Grand Egyptian Museum may finally open, just a stone’s throw from the Great Pyramids of Giza, this spring. What to expect? More than 1 million square feet of exhibition space, treasures including a 40-foot-high statue of Ramses II, outdoor gardens, and an expansive plaza from which visitors can take in the desert surroundings. Meanwhile, a number of new and luxurious ships have started sailing the Nile: Among the best choices are the Viking Osiris, an all-veranda vessel carrying 82 passengers, and the opulent Sphinx from Uniworld Boutique River Cruises, which has 42 cabins swathed in marble and hand-carved wood, with beds dressed in fine Egyptian cotton sheets. The hotel scene is also, thankfully, getting a refresh with a new Mandarin Oriental slated for downtown Cairo in 2024; the forthcoming 200-room Four Seasons Hotel Luxor is scheduled to debut in 2025 — not that you should wait that long to see the ancient Valley of the Kings

Even in a state known for its vast, empty landscapes, Basin and Range National Monument, about a two-hour drive north of Las Vegas, takes “remote” to a new level. The 704,000-acre preserve, created in 2015, provides endless opportunities for hiking, climbing, camping, and cycling; its desert valleys and mountain ranges are also dotted with Indigenous rock art sites. But the reason to go now is “City,” the single largest contemporary artwork in the world, which opened to visitors in September 2022. Made from dirt, rock, and concrete, the monumental open-air sculpture was more than 50 years in the making, a collection of mounds, depressions, and stelae conceived by the artist Michael Heizer. The endeavor — which was made possible by joint contributions from art institutions around the country, including LACMA and MoMA — will open to the public for the 2023 season by reservation only. Why the West is the Best
When looking to purchase land in the United States, whether or not you wish to retire on the land, use the property as an investment, or are just looking for cheap dirt to own, the locations of the best states to choose will vary. If you are looking for cheap land, then the best states to look in according to Google are Tennessee, Arkansas, and West Virginia. Yet, according to land investors, although Google is accurate on a broader scale as to where a person may find a cheap property, the most inexpensive places to purchase raw land are not located within any of these states. The top states to purchase inexpensive raw land can translate to the notion of affordable counties, and not the states themselves to the eyes of investors, and most of these states can be found somewhere out west.
When looking at affordable counties, the top states to purchase raw land include:
Arizona, California, New Mexico, Colorado, and Texas
Arizona-
The most inexpensive location to purchase raw land in the United States is Cochise County, located in the beautiful state of Arizona. When most people think of Arizona, they think of hot and dry desert and cactus. Cochise County does fit this description. Cochise County holds a lot of our nation's history, such as being home to the Cochise Native Americans and the old wild gun-slinging west. This county is filled with beautiful mountains, old ghost towns, and a great climate. Many places in Cochise County, such as Pearce, do not rise much above 90 degrees in the summer, making this area an ideal place to reside.
The second least expensive county to own property in is that of Apache County, located in northern Arizona. When most people think of Arizona, they think of cactus, but this area specializes in Ponderosa Pine trees, Douglas Firs, and Junipers. This region is vast, taking up nearly all of the northern and eastern portion of Arizona, with a wide variety of stunning state parks such as The Petrified Forest National Park and the Apache-Sitgreaves National Forest which is filled with wildlife and vast lakes.
Navajo County, Apache County's next-door neighbor is also an affordable place to own property. It is home to the city of Holbrook, and Show Low. Some of the Petrified Forest National Park is located within this region and it also offers Monument Valley and Keams Canyon. Also, this is a very large county offering a ton of space and tons of unoccupied lands.
California-
With the city of Los Angeles being so expensive, it might be shocking for people to know that their next-door neighboring county of San Bernardino is affordable! This county is home to the Mojave National Preserve, San Bernardino National Forest, and some of the Joshua Tree National Park, home of the famous Joshua Tree. If for nothing else then it is worth it to own property here to be close to many outdoor recreational activities and visitation to the big city that this area has to offer.
New Mexico-
Luna County offers epic views, tons of exploration areas, and a great climate. It is home to booming towns such as Deming and Sunshine, New Mexico. Deming is home to one of the number one red wines and the biggest winery in the United States at the D.H. Lescombes Winery & Tasting Room. Thus, although Sonoma and Napa counties are still home to some of the best wines in the country, they can move over when competing for desirable property to own land and grow grapes compared to Luna County’s affordability.
Valencia County, in New Mexico, is home to lush mountain views combined with the heart of the valley. This county is located just south of Albuquerque, it includes the El Camino Real de Tierra Adentro National Historic Trail, the Cibola National Forest, and the Manzano Wilderness. It is also home to the Facebook Data Center, so if the views and nature don’t amaze you, maybe the job market will.
Colorado-
Costilla county is not only desirable but unusual. It is home to many mountains, including the Rocky Mountain range, but also alligators and aliens. At the Colorado Gators Reptile Park, you can touch a gator. This park was opened in the 1970s and serves as a rescue center for many creatures. The San Luis Valley has also had its share of the otherworldly, as many unidentified flying crafts have been spotted there; and for a better review of spacecraft, just visit the UFO watchtower located within the county.
Texas-
There are three very inexpensive counties located in the large state of Texas, and Hudspeth is one of them. If you enjoy researching or observing ancient styles of agriculture, pictography, and artifacts, then this area may interest you. Hudspeth was home to the Prehistoric Jornada Mogollon people who resided in the Rio Grande floodplain and left behind a ton of evidence of their prior existence here. Also, if you are looking for mountains, fresh air, and isolation, this place will fit those needs.
Brewster County, just like Hudspeth, finds its home in western Texas. Also similar to Hudspeth, this is an area with a lot of lands and a low population of people. This area is home to not only ancient cultures and raider history but holds a portion of the Chihuahuan Desert landscapes.
Lastly, there is Presidio County, one of the larger counties in the huge state of Texas. This county is well known for farmland and this area has been cultivated since 1200 A.D. This area offers scenic drives across the Rio Grande, Big Bend Ranch state park, and Cibolo Creek Ranch area.

With retirement, it should be obvious by earlier mentioned facts that Arizona and New Mexico would be among the very top places to reside. Arizona holds the number one placement for weather and ranks number seven on the best places to retire in according to Bankrate’s article The Best and Worst States to Retire in 2021. Yet, New Mexico ranks seventh in regards to weather and twentieth for retirees, but also tenth in affordability, which is not bad at all!
When it comes to investing, speaking of New Mexico, not only is the land affordable and the climate more ideal but according to Amy Bell of Investopedia, in her article, The Top 5 States for Retirees to Buy Cheap Property; New Mexico’s economy is on the rise along with the population. As such, although there is no guarantee that land will grow in value, this notion does strengthen the argument that there is a strong chance that it might. Speaking from personal experience as a professional investor and selling land in Luna county since 2018, I have seen a huge increase in the cost of raw land within this county.
Arizona is a great state to look into if you are wishing to invest. Arizona has had a stable economy and a good job market for quite some time. Since Arizona has a ton of land, there are openings to lend that land to many farmers, which could make a great profit. Or, just hold onto it and the value may start to grow!
According to Martinez Ranch Management and Real Estate, other great states to invest in are California and Utah. California is due to the rising costs to reside within the state and paired with its beauty. Utah is not only an affordable place to own property and is sought after for those who are willing to owner-finance land to those who can’t afford to purchase it outright.

Find your own dream house property in the Colorado Springs real estate area of the Black Forest. This part of the Colorado Springs real estate space is located in northern El Paso County. The Black Prep is a rural area that is situated on approximately 180, 000 acres of land. The area is heavily wooded with mostly Ponderosa Pine trees. Jasper Akerboom Is Cultivating Custom Yeast Strains for Hundreds of Craft Brewers
This October, VinePair is celebrating our second annual American Beer Month. From beer style basics to unexpected trends (pickle beer, anyone?), to historical deep dives and new developments in package design, expect an exploration of all that’s happening in breweries and taprooms across the United States all month long.
Jasper Akerboom came to the United States after receiving his Ph.D. in microbiology and food technology from Wageningen University in the Netherlands. He landed in northern Virginia, where he focused on protein engineering at the Howard Hughes Medical Institute.
How then, did he end up founding Jasper Yeast in Virginia’s Loudoun County?
Akerboom was drawn to the excitement of isolating his own unique strains of yeast, but also to the camaraderie he discovered in the rural area just outside Washington, D.C.
The brewing community is, he says, “a collection of lost souls.” Often referred to as “D.C.’s Wine Country,” Loudoun County is actually also home to over 30 craft breweries. Akerboom can’t choose just one favorite. They’re all doing great work, he says. There’s Wheatland Spring Farm + Brewery, where Akerboom developed the strain used in its Loudoun Grown Farmhouse Ale, a brew made entirely from locally sourced ingredients. Akerboom also created a strain of yeast from a whale bone fossil that was used in Lost Rhino Brewing Company’s Bone Dusters Paleo Ale.
Knowing that the majority of beer in the U.S. uses a very basic yeast product, he became invested in creating a more tailored experience for brewers. These unique strains, Akerboom says, create more expressive brews. Isolating a yeast strain from the same field a brewer’s hops are grown in, for example, provides a hyperlocal focus that is impossible to replicate with larger commercial yeast makers. Along with his business partner Travis Tedrow and their growing team, they are proud of the connections they’ve cemented both locally and on the national beer scene. Akerboom’s role as district president of the mid-Atlantic region of the Master Brewers Association of the Americas has given him the chance to learn what really matters to brewers and meet their needs.
Akerboom chatted with VinePair over brunch at Shoe’s Cup and Cork, a favorite local eatery in Leesburg, Va., where he lives with his wife and two young daughters.
The yeast industry is dominated in the U.S. by several large companies. How do you help clients understand the value in a more tailored product?
I would say the biggest challenge is that brewers all have different expectations and desires. It’s a very much a trust-based relationship and everyone’s needs are different. Since we are a smaller player, some people automatically assume that what we do would be less professional or of less quality. This is something that obviously is not true. We work with a lot of local breweries, and there is a Dutch saying that says, “What comes from far tastes good.” Something from the other side of the country is better than what you can get down the street, in some people’s minds. We help clients understand that this is not true. Travis and I are always a phone call away. If someone reaches out, we will talk to them and always help them. We are both former head brewers. I am coming from a production brewery, and Travis was a brewpub brewer for a long time. We understand the challenges of the job, and gladly offer help even when it has nothing to do with yeast.
What is your favorite brew or strain you’ve worked on and why?
We have developed a few saison strains that we isolated ourselves. Isolation is basically the process of reproducing a particularly favorable strain from a sample we find. It is really a lot of fun to learn more about these strains by using them. When other people use them, we try their beers, and get to know the strain even more. Using these in different recipes and under different conditions really brings out different characteristics of what we’ve isolated. We have a strain that we isolated from an old beer barrel that was found in DC. The barrel is from a brewery from long ago, and that strain is so unique. This particular strain is our JY102, American Saison III.
What’s the best part of your job?
The best part of our job is talking to people and feeling the connection to each brewery we work with. It’s just great to hear people be so enthusiastic about something we grew for them, and to know that we can be a part of it in the way that we do. Getting to know a lot of brewers is really a lot of fun. Most people are very collegial and friendly and it is just great to see old friends and have a beer with them. Most brewers are self-taught, and we’ve all come from different fields.
What do you see as the main difference between European beer and American beer, as this is American Beer Month at VinePair?
Historically, European beer is much more rooted in tradition than American beer. This is not always the case, of course, and there are exceptions. Americans started off from a clean slate after Prohibition. Besides the macro-brewed lagers, there was not much going on anymore, until the craft beer revival took place. Now the American beer landscape is totally different, with many breweries per capita. The envelope is pushed hard when it comes to trends in the U.S.A., perhaps maybe a little too hard. Some styles have already faded in popularity before beers ended up on the market. It’s hard to keep up! In Europe, beer styles are more regional, and breweries sometimes only make one style or a very limited number of styles. Ten years ago it would be impossible to find a German-style hefeweizen brewed in the Netherlands, for example. Lots of American craft breweries make a German-style hefeweizen, though, and no one bats an eye. European breweries have perfected specific styles over the years, but also become a little — maybe too — rigid. The American craft beer movement has blown to Europe as well, though, and things have been changing there for sure. It’s interesting to see Dutch brewers make New England IPA, for example, with their own twist on it. I would say the biggest difference would be that Americans are extremely innovative, and Europeans have historically strong traditions and their strength lies there. The world is becoming more cosmopolitan, though, and things are changing on both sides.
What are some things that could change within the beer industry?
The beer industry itself is maturing. It is hard to keep growing year after year as an industry, of course. There is always a fear from within the industry that the bottom will fall out, but beer and breweries will always be around, I think. In what shape or form is unknown, though.
The arrival of seltzer has definitely shaken things up, and brewers have a love/hate relationship with that beverage. It is an indication that some people are looking at other things besides beer, and where this all will go is the big question.
There is also a big push from employees for more responsibility and treating people better in the beer industry, which is a good thing.
When was the first time you felt successful or like you’d ‘made it?’
I would say when we started to hire people. Having someone work with you, represent the yeast in the brewing community, and be excited about where they work is actually very nice. Jasper Yeast had by then moved beyond just Travis and me.
Your whole professional life centers around beer. When you’re kicking back on a night off, what type of brew do you reach for, and why?
I have become less and less of a chaser, and I’m totally content in drinking a “low-brow” beverage. Beer, I think, should always be accessible. I’m always excited for the fall, as I am really into malty lagers when they are abundant and well made. It sounds perhaps crazy, but I’ve really had a craving for West Coast-style IPA. It’s making a little bit of a comeback, which is nice. In general I tend to go lighter — think saison, pilsners, pale ales. As long as it is well made, I’m totally happy with it!

The world’s demographics are changing, pushing toward more deaths than births. Though some countries’ populations continue to grow, fertility rates are falling nearly everywhere else. Demographers now predict that toward the middle of this century, the global population will enter a sustained decline for the first time.
New COVID-19 cases plummet to lowest levels since last June
(AP) New coronavirus cases across the United States have tumbled to rates not seen in more than 11 months, sparking optimism. As cases, hospitalizations and deaths steadily dropped this week, pre-pandemic life in America has largely resumed. Hugs and unmasked crowds returned to the White House, a Mardi Gras-style parade marched through Alabama’s port city of Mobile, and even states that have stuck to pandemic-related restrictions readied to drop them. As the seven-day average for new cases dropped below 30,000 per day this week, Rochelle Walensky, the director of the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, pointed out cases have not been this low since June 18, 2020. The average number of deaths over the last seven days also dropped to 552—a rate not seen since July last year. It’s a dramatic drop since the pandemic hit a devastating crescendo in January.
An IRS refund logjam
(WSJ) Taxpayers are encountering unprecedented delays getting refunds, said Laura Saunders at The Wall Street Journal. “A host of problems rooted in the COVID-19 pandemic” has led to a severe backlog at the Internal Revenue Service. The agency is “reviewing about 16 million 2020 returns, mostly because of tax changes last year and in March,” while simultaneously gearing up “to send checks to millions of families” who qualify for upfront child tax credits this summer. Having to delay two annual filing deadlines last year, apply new tax-law changes, and “coordinate 470 million stimulus payments” hasn’t made the IRS’s job easier. Fortunately, the agency will pay 3 percent interest on “most tax refunds issued after April 15,” as long as the return was filed by May 17.
Leaving home: West Virginia population drop is largest in US
(AP) After her company told employees in 2017 to start working remotely, customer service representative Haley Miller decided to break from her lifelong home of West Virginia. The beaches of St. Petersburg, Florida, provide a far different view than the mountains of her native state. She is not alone. According to newly released data from the U.S. Census Bureau, West Virginia lost a higher percentage of its residents than any other state in the nation. From 2010 to 2020, the population dropped 3.2%, or about 59,000 people. Reasons for leaving vary, but common themes emerge: a lack of opportunity or low pay; not enough to do; a political climate that some find oppressive, and poor cellphone and internet service. About 16% of West Virginia’s residents live in poverty, surpassed only by Arkansas, Kentucky, New Mexico, Louisiana and Mississippi.
Italian cable car plunges to the ground, killing at least 14
(AP) A cable car taking visitors to a mountaintop view of some of northern Italy’s most picturesque lakes plummeted to the ground Sunday and then tumbled down the slope, killing 14 people. The lone survivor, a young child, was hospitalized in serious condition with broken bones, authorities said. Six of the dead were Israeli citizens, including a family of four who lived in Italy, the Israeli foreign ministry said. It wasn’t clear if the other couple was related. The mayor of Stresa, where the incident occurred, said it appeared that a cable broke, sending the car careening until it hit a pylon and then fell to the ground. At that point, the car overturned “two or three times before hitting some trees,” said Mayor Marcella Severino. The car was believed to have fallen around 15 meters (50 feet), according to Italian media. Sunday’s tragedy appeared to be Italy’s worst cable car disaster since 1998 when a low-flying U.S. military jet cut through the cable of a ski lift in Cavalese, in the Dolomites, killing 20 people.

ROVINJ, Croatia (AP)—Sun loungers are out, beach bars are open and rave music is pumping. Hotels and restaurants are greeting visitors hoping to get a head start on summer after more than a year of coronavirus lockdowns and travel restrictions. Croatia has widely reopened its stunning Adriatic coastline for foreign tourists, becoming one of the first European countries to drop most of its pandemic measures. Now, the ability of people to go there depends on each country’s travel rules. The mood is relaxed in the Istria region, the northernmost part of the Croatian coast famous for its pebble beaches, thick pine forests, wine and delicacies such as truffles, olive oil, goat cheese and prosciutto. Hardy anyone wears masks on the streets or in restaurants in the picturesque town of Rovinj. Still-standing limits on indoor dining and rules requiring a set amount of distance between tables are rarely observed. “People are fed up with lockdowns,” said Nikola Sandic, a waiter at a seafood restaurant located in a small boat harbor. “They have a glass of wine, watch the sea, and that’s all they need.”
Belarus opposition figure detained when flight diverted
(AP) A prominent opponent of Belarus’ authoritarian president was arrested Sunday after the airliner in which he was traveling was diverted to the country after a bomb threat, in what the opposition is calling a hijacking operation by the government. The Ryanair plane was carrying opposition figure Raman Pratasevich and traveling from Athens, Greece, to Vilnius, Lithuania. Deputy air force commander Andrei Gurtsevich said the plane’s crew made the decision to land in Minsk, but Ryanair said in a statement that Belarusian air traffic control instructed the plane to divert to the capital. The Belarusian Interior Ministry said Pratasevich was arrested at the airport. Pratasevich is a co-founder of the Telegram messaging app’s Nexta channel, which Belarus last year declared as extremist after it was used to help organize major protests against Lukashenko. Pratasevich, who had fled the country for Poland, faces charges that could carry a prison sentence of up to 15 years.
In the Russian Arctic, the First Stirrings of a Very Cold War
(NYT) Chunky green trucks carry Bastion anti-ship missiles that can be prepared for launch in just five minutes. A barracks building, sealed off from the elements like a space station, accommodates 150 or so soldiers. And a new runway can handle fighter jets, two of which recently buzzed the North Pole. Franz Josef Land, a jumble of glacier-covered islands in the Arctic Ocean named after an Austro-Hungarian emperor, was until a few years ago mostly uninhabited, home to polar bears, walruses, sea birds and little else. But thanks to a warming climate, all that is changing, and quickly. Nowhere on Earth has climate change been so pronounced as in the polar regions. The warming has led to drastic reductions in sea ice, opening up the Arctic to ships during the summer months and exposing Russia to new security threats. As the sea ice melts, Russia is deploying ever more soldiers and equipment to the Far North, becoming essentially the first military to act on the strategic implications of climate change for the region in what some have called the beginnings of a Very Cold War. The Arctic ocean has lost nearly a million square miles of ice and is expected to be mostly ice-free in the summertime, including at the North Pole, by around the middle of the century. “In a sense, Russia is acquiring new external borders that need to be protected from potential aggressors,” the German Institute for International and Security Affairs, a Berlin-based think tank, wrote of Russia’s problem of disappearing ice.
More than 125,000 Myanmar teachers suspended for opposing coup
(Reuters) More than 125,000 school teachers in Myanmar have been suspended by the military authorities for joining a civil disobedience movement to oppose the military coup in February, an official of the Myanmar Teachers’ Federation said. The suspensions have come days before the start of a new school year, which some teachers and parents are boycotting as part of the campaign that has paralysed the country since the coup cut short a decade of democratic reforms. Myanmar had 430,000 school teachers according to the most recent data, from two years ago. The disruption at schools echoes that in the health sector and across government and private business since the Southeast Asian country was plunged into chaos by the coup and the arrest of elected leader Aung San Suu Kyi. Around 19,500 university staff have also been suspended, according to the teachers’ group.
