semantics come from linguistic convention, basically words mean what they do because we agree they do out of customary usage.
every word has an etymology, or origin, but semantic change is a constant of language. so etymology is insufficient to explain a word's meaning. the word "sake" (as in, "for god's sake!") meant "thing", now it doesn't. "vagina" meant sheath, now it doesn't.
depending on what demographic, community, you may have different conceptual systems for the same terms, even during the same period of time. nowadays, some are cross-cultural and cross-linguistic with the advent of multinational 'internet culture', so it is harder to keep track of these things.
"sentience v sapience v sophonce" actually is an interesting elaboration, a three-tiered distinction over the two-tiered distinction if you collapse any possible distinction between sapience/sophonce.
sophonce is a neologism with a greek root, although it is latinate, coined by a collaborative worldbuilding project called Orion's Arm, and "a project by nerds" doesn't quite translate it. it's a sci-fi fictional setting and their webpage is a bit old styled but it still includes thousands of articles expanding history, culture, 'galactography', etc, for tens of thousands of years into the future. it is a treasure trove of interesting ideas, some very original and philosophically relevant now with the development of AI.
many deal with a branch of philosophy called "noology", the study of the mind, thought, and knowledge.
they have developed terms like hypersophont too and tiers of possible levels of super-human intelligence based on what makes human intelligence different from animal intelligence, including the intuition that this is not like a linear ascension.
so the three-tiered distinction conveys something like this
sentient = could include literally invertebrates, sensory functions, but not necessarily able to form thoughts. subjective experience can go from vivid and detailed to very rudimentary (like a jelly that only "notices" light and dark)
sapient = intelligence, but not at the level of human intelligence. canids, felids, corvids. more importantly, primates, great apes. because there are currently important ethical questions that ponder what "personhood" and non-human personhood in particular is. is an ape that knows itself is itself and can do sign language* a person? maybe not, but they're not just sentient like a grasshopper is.
(*animals can sign, althought it's not really 'language' because animals can't really do grammar/syntax)
the current best estimate for that threshold, scientifically, is self-awareness btw. self-awareness is the ability to have, in one's mind, the notion of self. self-awareness is also called "autoscience". some non-human animals are able to do this.
sophonce or whatever word you wanna call it, would imply something more, something currently only humans possess. metacognition is not just self-awareness.
but metacognition takes it a step further, it implies associations around that, the ability to form knowledge about oneself, to turn oneself into a concept, and think about it.
this conversation would reveal someone is self-aware:
+hey you spilled your coffee -ah right, i see the spot, i hadn't noticed. i wondered why suddenly my knee felt hot. the fact they can associate an internal feeling (hot, cold) with the experience observed by someone else, as happening to them- that requires a concept of the self as the thing that experiences things. but only this conversation would reveal someone is metacognizant: +hey you spilled your coffee -oh fuck, i actually love coffee, now i have to get another one +do you really love coffee, though? -hm i guess you're right, i actually have a caffeine addiction, but i don't want to say it because i feel bad about it. only humans can form knowledge about the self and know things about the self, and have "recurrence" in thoughts. they aren't just thinking about coffee, they're thinking about what they're thinking about coffee (they're reflecting on the fact their euphemism reveals an avoidance to admit a problem).
that's what is so far human-only in terms of intelligence.
i am on my knees tears running down my face knuckles raw and bleeding and BEGGING people to learn the difference between sentient and sapient

Thought as such is already in conformity with a model that it borrows from the State apparatus, and which defines for it goals and paths, conduits, channels, organs, an entire organon. There is thus an image of thought covering all of thought; it is the special object of "noology" and is like the State-form developed in thought. This image has two heads, corresponding to the two poles of sovereignty: the imperium of true thinking operating by magical capture, seizure or binding, constituting the efficacy of a foundation (mythos); a republic of free spirits proceeding by pact or contract, constituting a legislative and juridical organization, carrying the sanction of a ground (logos)[...] And if these two heads are in interference, it is not only because there are many intermediaries and transitions between them[...] but also because, antithetical and complementary, they are necessary to one another....
It is easy to see what thought gains from this: a gravity it would never have on its own, a center that makes everything, including the State, appear to exist by its own efficacy or on its own sanction. But the State gains just as much. Indeed, by developing in thought in this way the State-form gains something essential: a whole consensus. Only thought is capable of inventing the fiction of a State that is universal by right, of elevating the State to the level of de jure universality. It is as if the sovereign were left alone in the world, spanned the entire ecumenon, and now dealt only with actual or potential subjects. It is no longer a question of powerful, extrinsic organizations, or of strange bands: the State becomes the sole principle separating rebel subjects, who are consigned to the state of nature, from consenting subjects, who rally to its form of their own accord. If it is advantageous for thought to prop itself up with the State, it is no less advantageous for the State to extend itself in thought, and to be sanctioned by it as the unique, universal form. The particularity of States becomes merely an accident of fact, as is their possible perversity, or their imperfection. For the modern State defines itself in principle as "the rational and reasonable organization of a community": the only remaining particularity a community has is interior or moral (the spirit of a people), at the same time as the community is funneled by its organization toward the harmony of a universal (absolute spirit). The State gives thought a form of interiority, and thought gives that interiority a form of universality: "The goal of worldwide organization is the satisfaction of reasonable individuals within particular free States."...
In a sense, it could be said that all this has no importance, that thought has never had anything but laughable gravity. But that is all it requires: for us not to take it seriously. Because that makes it all the easier for it to think for us, and to be forever engendering new functionaries. Because the less people take thought seriously, the more they think in conformity with what the State wants. Truly, what man of the State has not dreamed of that paltry impossible thing—to be a thinker?

Dispatches from Elsewhere: A Review of Sorts
Dispatches from Elsewhere is an AMC TV series from 2020 about the power of art and the intricacies of human life. It follows a group of four main characters participating in a mysterious scavenger hunt game that changes their lives. It's based on a true story, an event known as "The Jejune Institute" that was an incredibly large-scale work of art and became one of the first ARGs, or Alternate Reality Games.
I recommend Dispatches to fans of the concept of Alternate Reality Games. It explores how this form of art affects (or used to affect) people. Jason Segel (who plays the main character Peter) wrote it to express how his experience of the real Jejune Institute affected him. It's also canonically connected to the more recent ARG known as the New Noology Network.
I recommend it to those looking for more diversity in modern media. Main character Simone, played by Eve Lindley, is a transgender woman, and the show describes her realistic experiences in detail.
I recommend it to anyone who wants anything new. The power of finding something unique that changes you is a major theme in Dispatches, and the show itself can be that unique thing that changes you. It utilizes colorful set design, comedy beats, realistic relationships, meta-narrative elements, and many other interesting and new ideas that set it apart from other modern television.
I'd like to reiterate that Dispatches from Elsewhere uses meta-narrative elements. It's one of the only shows I know of that uses meta ideas in such a unique and powerful way. Some parts, such as the narrator describing the show to the viewer and thematic ideas of characters themselves, are more subtle, while others (especially towards the end) become very clear and always entertaining.

I think this view would've made sense a century ago or so, when psychology was the sole claimant to the title of a science that seeks to understand the mind; it's pretty clear by now that psychology is simply a pseudoscience, somewhere between acupuncture and Catholic theology in terms of how seriously we ought to treat its claims of being a trve & honest science. what I think is special about psychology is that there's no one "successor" to it, in the sense it's possible to trace a single path from astrology to astronomy (I mean. supposedly. idk anything about the history of astronomy)—there's not one "science of the mind", but instead multiple sciences that each reveal something about the mind. neurology is the most obvious one, but I think you could also apply the label to endocrinology and maybe even like, idk, immunology. you know how UTI's can cause psychotic breaks? yeah. maybe someone should unite the discoveries of all these separate disciplines within a single interdisciplinary field and call it something like, idk, noology. wait no, that's already a word. noonomy? awful. i'm voting for "mindcraft"
i feel like psychology is in the sort of stage of development that cosmology was 2500 years ago? like people will say shit about the mind on par with "the world sits atop a giant tortoise" or "the land was seeded with life via the ejaculate of an ancient god" and believe it ardently and i just dont know fam. i just dont know

Misguided, or Sloppy Thinking is More Prevalent Than We Might Be Comfortable With...
...Even from the minds of the confident, or the competent.
It is epidemic at the moment. Not spread by kissing, but other kinds of contact. Like memes, and infographics. Especially, the well designed, and colorful. This is something that has been bugging me for a while, now.
There's a new/obscure sub-field primarily of psychology, and philosophy. It's called "Noology". The "-ology" part most people understand as indicating a field of study. The "No-" part is the same as the "kno-" in knowing, and knowledge. It's the same as the "gno-" in gnostic. As I understand it Noology is specifically the study of thinking. Thought processes. How we think, how we arrive at conclusions.
My suggestion is to think about thinking. Think about what you are hearing, especially what you are repeating. Viral doesn't mean correct, even if it's enthusiastic, or colorful. Repeating is you. No matter the source, even if the historic person you most admire is accredited. Once you repeat it it becomes your credibility, it reflects you. This is a silly, and potentially costly way to be trendy.

So like, Dispatches from Elsewhere:
I sobbed my way through this series. Every character was not only nuanced and beautifully characterized, but taken seriously, portrayed realistically, and given so much meaning. I can’t pinpoint why, but this show really made me feel seen.
As for the ending, I feel it was fitting. The mystery was essentially solved, but learning why this show got made gave a broader contect thst really just made the experience that more meaningful. Although jarring, i found that it allowed me to assume the best of the characters, as the love they all have for each other has lead me to assume they’ll continue to help better and support each other in the future. Just a headcanon, but it’s a nice one.
Please watch this show. It’s touched me in a way I never anticipated. It’s so much more than a dramatization of an ARG; it shows why games like this can be meaningful and change people. It’s going to stick with me for a long long time.
Also obviously I’m a massive Simone stan

I'M SO FRICKING LATE TO THIS OMG
BUT I'M HERE NOW AND I AM READY FOR THE EMOTIONAL DAMAGE 🙂
who am i kidding i'm not ready for this i will never be ready for this
Day 234 of fucking 619... jesus. Do you think Ollie ever waited for her to just crack or did he know she'd be holding on for that long.
The Doctor was intent on bringing you to your knees and, luckily, you were intent on…not doing that.
Gotta love her planning skills
THE FUCKING SOLDIER
HE'S SO SWEET
he's scraggly and in dire need of some therapy, but he's sweet
When everyone else had died, you’d survived.
Metal Arm Dude had made sure of it.
😭😭😭
Did Novak ever see the Soldier's obedience when it came to 'keeping her alive' and 'not hurting her' as simply the Soldier taking orders or did he ever see that there were already cracks and Bucky's humanity seeped through when it came to watching over her?
wait a damn minute
if she's forgetting so much stuff already does that mean Novak put her in the chair?
DARKE
DID HE OR DIDN'T HE
NO
If you couldn’t remember him then…then you couldn’t remember…
— “Cierra tus ojos, mi amor,” he murmured, holding you against his chest as you began to struggle. He turned quickly, his back to the pair of rockets that were shooting toward you. He whispered in your ear, cradling your head against his neck, “Te quiero. Te quiero. Te quiero. Te—” —
— Close your eyes, my love. I love you. I love you. I love you. I— —
Him.
You squeezed your eyes shut as your chest began to heave, “Danny.”
haha fuck you too
You couldn’t let Novak take Danny from you twice.
The chapter barely started darke what the heck
It hasn't even been a full year and our girl is already pretty much at her breaking point
did she just call novak Norman? i love her
if I were her i'd fuck up his name intentionally all the time just to fuck with him
I'd call him Nietzche or Nirvana or Noology
From now on I will call him every word beginning with N that I can think of.
What if Nomad—nope, not that one—had found out you were talking to him and separated the two of you?
she's worried she'll lose the Soldier too? 😭
I mean hat makes sese considering he's the only person in her life right now who hasn't actively hurt her or questioned her.
I could write entire essays about how complex these two are but I don't have that kind of time
no stop caring about Ollie he doesn't deserve it
stop caring about ollie
STOP FUCKIN-
“I promised,” you whispered to yourself under your breath as you straightened yourself up the wall and let your gaze flick to the door.
girl no
how in the heck does she still have the energy to kick ass right now
he was so much bigger than you remembered him.
i'd be having a very different reaction right now in another context but right now i'm just terrified
also, he was so much bigger than you remembered him means her memory's gone to shit BUT he was so much bigger than you remembered him means Nepotism had done something to him that enhanced him.
i like that sentence. i'm sure there's an actual term for something like that but i can't remember it
yep Necromancy definitely put him in the chair.
WHERE IS MY SCRAGGLY NURTURING BOY
oh jesus...
i just gotta say (even though the current scene is harrowing and really fuckin dark) you're so good at descriptive narration
You felt the instant Danny went limp and let you go. Felt your bones snap as the Humvee landed on your legs. The smoke burned at your lungs, sand clouded your vision, but Danny’s hand was in yours.
Then you heard his last breath—his last heartbeat
and fuck you again.
i can't keep letting you make me cry like this
 “I know math, I’m a…I’m…”
actually, no I don't.
William was the boss. David was your fiance. Thomas was the medic. Owen was the computer guy. So…what were you?
this is psychological torture of the audience this all goes against the geneva convention this is fuckin illegal darke why the heck IS SHE FORGETTING ALL OF THEM THIS SOON
YOU'VE BEEN PLANNING THIS FOR A WHIIIILE
The bioweapons from Paris AND Tokyo were Nocuous' experiments whaaaaat
The guards shoved you against the table as they began to file from the room before a hand as cold as death wrapped around your wrist.
Five minutes ago that cold was soothing and gentle
I love how well this could all be parallel visuals in an actual show or movie
unfortunately it just lives inside my brain and i can't admire it the way it deserves
the fucking edits we could make...
WOAH
SHE DID WHAT
SHE FUCKING FLUNG HIM ACROSS THE FUCKING ROOM WHAT THE FUCK
I love how even Noctule was shocked like this wasn't everything he was hoping for.
WOAH
HE'S BACK
GENTLE SCRAGGLY BOY IS BACK
I am so confused was it the kick that brought him back or... did the kick turn him on or something
of course you fuckin' ended it with Danny of course you fucking did
WHY AM I CURSING SO MUCH I AM SO STRESSED
A third with fiery red hair that paced the room with a frown.
who's to say that one's an actual hallucination?
BRO
YOU CAN'T PUT A MOMENT THAT FUCKING SWEET INTO THIS OF ALL THINGS
— “Well,” you puffed, sitting beside him with a roll of gauze in your hands, “Where doesn’t it hurt?” —
— He looked up at you, a mischievous smile curling to his lips before he pointed to his unbroken wrist, “Here.” —
— You raised a brow, reached out to the wrist before bringing it to your lips. Danny’s grin grew as you did before he pointed to his cheek, “Here.” —
— A smirk found its way to your face as you pushed out of your seat and he pulled you between his legs. You pressed a kiss to his cheek, earning yourself a giggle before Danny pulled away. He pressed a finger to his lips, “Here.” —
I'M NEVER FORGIVING YOU FOR THIS
and then cute Danny moments is followed by cute Soldier moments like WHY WHY WOULD YOU DO THIS
im crying into a burger right now i look ridiculous
ooh it's the iconic line, Narcotics said the iconic line
“Tell me, my little phantom, how do you create something like you? What must we put a person through to become perfection?”
at risk of sounding like a TikTok comment: he ate that
oh god if Nominal was real do you think people would make edits of him
and I don't mean like... the kind that you made of all the villains and shit but... like... you know the ones of Pedro...
EW let's not think about that
but my mind is fuckin disgusting so let me put focus on
“You can scream for me.”
TikTok would love that for all the wrong reasons
she's so cute rn, wiggling her toes while fucking strapped to a metal table primed for another torture session
Everytime Ghos tugs on her restraints the Soldier just walks up and adjusts them... his love language is easing the pain of torture. I love him.
He’d tried to kill you. He worked for Novak. He wasn’t supposed to be the only support you had.
and that's what makes their dynamic so fricking interesting...
Then it would be your three-step plan to success.
as if any other time you've applied your three step plan worked. sure ghostie, dream big.
new soldier friend 🥺
I need to know what happened at the county fair Ghost almost died at.
In some other universe she might've actually died there and I wanna know if it was cotton candy food poisoning or decapitation via roller coaster ride.
oh hello Oliver you anak ng putang dinampot lang sa bangketang iniputan ng ibon putanginang gago
“‘Cause I ain’t leavin’ without you.”
girl. no.
You tried to figure out how to bring him back to you but it seemed to be different every time. You couldn’t pin down what brought back his memories.
when in doubt, kick him across the room. that seemed to get him going
she is literally so indecisive she is just like me. which is it, three step or four step? how about we all just lay here and die? seems easier, takes no time at all.
I love hwo while she's kicking ass right now I'm getting all hopeful while completely aware she's not getting out just yet and things are only about to get so much worse for her
i love how she just gives up and lets him drag her back upstairs like a cat held by the scruff
oh shit Noodles is whipping out the chains and shackles.... in a very different context I'd be doing a 😏😏 but... yeah no i know where this is going and it is not 😏😏
did they let her kill all those guards and kick all that ass just so they could have time to set up all the new stuff... like some kind of surprise birthday party
like she was thrown into her cell and they were all like SURPRISE YOU'VE GOT NEW CHAAAAINS NOW GET OVER HERE AND TAKE THE FUCKIN LASHES
oof you know how to take it dark, darke
STOP IT WITH THE DANNY FLASHBACKS STOP
Soldier Girl goddamnit
“Promise me something?” you asked with a shiver, “Don’t leave me, okay?”
“I’m not going anywhere, Soldier Girl.”
It's a great fucking thing I plan on watching a movie after this because if I end my night on THAT I will cry myself to sleep.
like
what do I even say
the flashback chapters are literally amazing, you never miss and I always go in expecting them to be fucking awesome but they exceed expectations every damn time.
the parallels between Danny and Bucky, and Narwhal's bonechilling presence is just chef's kiss. I love Nugget's effortlessness. he's just so scary.
He'd be terrifying on screen, which is why I have to be grateful he's only in fanfic. If he was real I'd be pissing myself in a movie theatre.
And I did go the entire chapter not calling him by his real name and I'm so proud of myself for that.
I love the flashback chapters so fricking much and I can't wait to seew what unfolds in the next one. The day all of this comes full circle fully will be fricking epic.

“I don’t remember anything.”
He shrugged, nodding to one of his guards as he backed away from you and took back his notebook.
“We shall start with something easier, hm?” Novak said, settling down in his chair with his book and another file, “Who else is on your team?”
“Make no mistake, Lieutenant, I will break you,” he snarled, his voice low and dark, “I do not care how long it takes. I do not care what I have to do to you, I will do it. And you will give me what I want.”
You leveled another glare against him, wrenching your chin out of his grip, “Never.”
“We shall see.”

hey i've been meaning to get into your ARG podcast bc i have a passing interest in them, what are your favourite episodes you've done? :0
i have an old post of my favorite episodes for new listeners over here! it's like 10 months old tho so a few i would add would be:
new noology network / the institute: two episodes where we talk about jeff hull's args and the philosophy of play behind them. we're covering another few args in this series really soon and i think they're really unique compared to everything else in the arg sphere!
the gift part 1 / part 2: we recently talked about a...horror....christmas themed arg? it's bonkers.
tender pt 1 / pt 2 / blood for trade: we talked about that time alice & smith made a vampire dating app arg (+ a christmas special spinoff) to market vampire the masquerade bloodlines 2, a game that was supposed to come out in 2019 and has not yet been released
also specifically part 3 of our series on the dark knight arg because it's the only episode we've ever had to re-record (the original recording was lost) and you can hear us jokerifying in real time

so that arg has a direct reference to the new noology network arg but i have no idea how they would be connected because nnn was for a show that hasn’t been renewed for a second season. most likely a red herring similar to when daisy brown had alan tutorials references but at the same time i still can’t help but wonder why they’d reference that specific arg out of all the args they could have referenced that are about selling souls and cults. and this really is giving me cult arg vibes if you watch the newest video, like they all had that weird tone but the most recent is the most culty of them all. which begs the question, what does that have to do with elsewhere or, slightly more of a stretch, the institute? of course i have some guesses but i was only a spectator of the nnn arg and never had a chance to watch dispatches from elsewhere or the institute so i guess i should do some research? like i was gonna watch them eventually anyway lmao, i’m just shocked i’m being prompted to through yet another strange arg. again, i’m pretty sure it’s just a reference but it could have a lead in there somewhere. there’s so little on ecwiti.net outside of a handful of videos under a minute long, some empty accounts, and a really, really weird site that for some reason gives me the heebie jeebies (probably the subject matter but something about it’s half done feel and casual way of talking about buying and selling people as cryptocurrency just does not sit right with me which is all the more reason for me to get to the bottom of this). like i’m genuinely excited to play this game and usually i really only play the serial killer, surreal horror fantasy, or analog horror args. i’ve always been more of a spectator with args like this unless i got there late in the game. hopefully it’s some kind of spiritual successor to nnn or at the very least i get some ideas of what’s going on or where to look next based on that reference because any reference to the site itself leads me nowhere. like even the phrase “a human marketplace” brings nothing up and you’d think that would be mentioned somewhere considering how many times it’s brought up in the videos and on the site.

Got home reviewing my day. Frantic, distracted. I put my groceries away. Can't find my blue cheese. It's okay. It's somewhere. I'm bound to find it eventually.
