OJT EATS | Yun Gui Chuang

We've been having a bit of a hankering for noodles lately and so we've been trying out a few different noodle places. While we haven't been willing to queue for the places that have gone viral like Noodle Inn, there are a good number of other noodle joints that are worth a visit! One of those places is Yun Gui Chuang near Southwark tube station. Keep on reading to see what we thought of it.

First up was the fried aubergine. The batter on this was a little heavy and we think aubergine isn't the best thing to fry as it seems to soak up the oil pretty easily. Despite all of that, it was still actually pretty tasty. Crispy outside and just super soft and tender on the inside.

We also ordered some fried bean sauce chicken wings. These were really good. They were really well fried and had a savouriness to it because of the bean sauce. For a noodle place, we weren't expecting such good wings!

These were slices of seared ox tongue. These were fairly spicy but really tasty. Unfortunately, they were slightly overcooked, something that's easy to do with ox tongue. Not necessarily something we'd order again but a nice dish to try.

Now onto the noodles. This bowl was called the King of Hot and Numbing. You get the option to choose the spice level and we ended up going for medium level spiciness. Turns out that at this place, medium level is actually pretty high! This had a pretty serious kick! Other than that, there was pork belly, chicken thigh and a soy bean roll. The noodles here are all rice noodles which were lovely and bouncy.

This bowl was a bowl of noodles in their clear pork broth with a mild level of spice, beef slices, shiitake mushrooms and pork intestines as toppings. You can tell from the picture that their clear pork broth wasn't actually that clear but it was still really tasty. It was a pretty generous portion of pork intestine but we felt there could've been a bit more beef. Still, a very enjoyable bowl of noodles!

This place is pretty centrally located and serves up a great bowl of noodles, especially if you like a bit of spice. It's cheap and cheerful with some very tasty sides so if you're in the area and am looking for a nice hearty warming bowl of noodles, check it out!

Three important facts that I promise are connected:

Although it seems that the ninja take turns cooking, Zane's food is apparently so good that they all eagerly await his turn. And his pies are apparently so good that just the smell of them brought a tear to Jay's eyes.

When someone passes away, grief makes menial tasks like cooking and cleaning very difficult. It's for this reason that a lot of bereavement support advice recommends giving gifts of pre-made food or service to those who are grieving. I can imagine the grief would be doubly worsened if you are grieving someone who typically did a lot of the cooking, or someone with whom you strongly associate such tasks.

In s4ep1 "The Invitation", Lloyd invites each of the ninja to dinner with him at Chen's Noodlehouse. However, he phrases it as "if you change your mind, you know where I'll be". Despite his vague wording, all of them unanimously know exactly where to go and when to be there. Furthermore, Cole even says "you're late" to Kai despite the fact that a meetup time was never discussed.

Anyway, my theory is that due to the grief of losing Zane making it difficult to cook, the ninja became regulars at Chen's Noodlehouse. They would go to the same location at roughly the same time almost every night, and that's how the ninja knew exactly where/when to meet up. Which means the place that helped them keep their heads above water post-s3, the place where they spent many nights grieving Zane's loss, is also the same place Lloyd chose to suggest adding a new teammate. And also the same place they found out Zane was alive.

This restaurant has become so strongly tied to their grief over Zane's loss, simply through the way it was there for his friends when he was not. Feeding them the food he himself was no longer present to cook for them. The statue in the garden represents the legacy of his heroism while the noodlehouse represents the legacy of the grief created by his absence, and in this essay I will -

Holy duck, that last chapter HURTS, but is also so, so good- I love the elemental outbursts SO MUCH, they're so good, I love the added Morro reference, I love the whole compass and eye colour/pupils thing and Jesse bless him he's the best and the way you take already good concepts and amply them by so much (how Zane finds out he's a Nindroid? Immaculate, amazing. Jay's snakebite combined with his abandonment trauma? Devastating. Cole's entire arc and elemental outburst and added talk with his dad? Fantastic. Kai's frustration? His outburst? Oh it's BRILLIANT and I want to hold him so gently and oh my gosh my heart broke with how despite all the pain he was in HE ran out of the room so he wouldn't light the Bounty ablaze and HE wanted them to stay back so they wouldn't get hurt this poor traumatized boy- and don't think I don't see that hint of Chen Chad and the noodlehouse mafia-) and everthing is just AHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHH-

The most unique delicious Noodles and Pan Fried Dumplings ever eaten WOW. All fresh made and hand pulled must be the trick. Place packin open just a few weeks, great location on Warren just past Wayne road. The signature dish be Henan Noodle Soup with Lamb. Henan’s beloved stewed noodles are made with high-gluten flour, supplemented by various side dishes. The highlight is all in its soup that is slowly cooked with tender lamb and lamb bones (split to reveal the marrow in the middle) for five hours. Added to this are kelp shreds, vermicelli, coriander, quail eggs, and touches of chili oil, sugar garlic, and crushed chili. OMG Folks a massive bowl of Love we shared and still had leftovers. It's like four Noodle types you gonna Love. Ordered a dozen Pork Filled Pan Fried Dumplings actually the biggest bestest ever, over double the meat filling anywhere else.
