You pat the cloth down his abs and cock. Once he is clean you climb into bed behind him and place your arm over his ribs pulling him against you cuddling your face to his back. You quickly fall into a deep sleep.

Long Live the Baron

Feyd awakens from a nightmare he sits up in bed in the dark breathing heavily in a light sheen of sweat. It wasn’t the usual sex dream of you. In this nightmare you were screaming being taken away from him by force.

He quickly reaches and checks you are by his side. Feeling your soft warm skin under his hand he lays and presses a kiss to your neck. He loves you with a newfound ferocity after drinking from you. He pulls you closer to him and rests with his head at the back of yours inhaling your scent trailing his fingers through your hair. His heart rate returns to normal with you in his arms and he rests his eyes.

There is a sudden sharp knock at the door making Feyd sit up. He doesn’t answer he waits for his Page to intercept. Once his Page collects the message he speaks through the door knowing Feyd is a light sleeper and will already be awake. “m’Lord It is your uncle you must come to his chamber at once” his page relays.

Feyd gets dressed in his traditional Harkonnen attire. A plain black uniform with chest pockets and a high collar. He knows the outcome of this urgent request. He kneels next to you sleeping, and plants a kiss on your temple. He places his hand on your womb to his unborn. This is the moment he has waited his entire life for he leaves his chambers heart racing with adrenaline.

He is brought to the Barons main chamber and enters a somber scene. All twelve of the Barons advisors and his Mentat with their heads low surrounding the bed of the clearly deceased Baron Vladimir Harkonnen. He is dressed in traditional black attire clutching the Harkonnen crest at his chest. Feyds brother Rabban is trying to remain stoic but every so often his sniffling can be heard.

Feyds newly appointed Lord in waiting makes the announcement “Siridar Vladimir Harkonnen is dead, long live the Baron Feyd Rautha Harkonnen“

“LONG LIVE BARON FEYD RAUTHA HARKONNEN!” They all chant bowing in reverence to Feyd.

His breathing increases as his eyes dance wildly. He glances around the room at all the advisors and his brother bowing to him. Seeing his uncles dead lifeless corpse in the back ground he feels the elation rising in his chest. This is real, his honor fulfilled he is now the reigning Baron of Geidi Prime. He has a maniacal look in his eyes as the corner of his mouth twitches into a smile.

With CNU’s mission unfulfilled, Mallory Baches takes co-leadership reins

In late November CNU’s board hired Mallory Baches as the new President, to co-lead with new Executive Director Margaret Gattis. Mallory recently discussed her aspirations and expectations for the organization.

What in your background best prepares you for this position?

As a practitioner of the New Urbanism, the principles of the Charter have been the foundation of my practice across this country and abroad, since I began working as a young professional almost 25 years ago. But over the course of my career, I have worked with several nonprofits, served on nonprofit boards, and worked at CNU itself. And so, I feel a real comfort with the organization and its mission.

CNU is moving to a shared leadership model. What do you think of that, and what can urbanists expect from that?

This is an extraordinary opportunity for both Margaret and I to tap into the skills and talents that we brought to the organization previously but do so in a much more powerful and engaged way. I’ve had a long-time relationship with the new urbanist movement and individual practitioners and partner organizations. Margaret has an extensive background in nonprofit leadership and management, and she has an opportunity to elevate those experiences for the betterment of the organization. It also helps that we are great friends. The transition is something that is new for CNU, and so neither one of us goes into it in any lighthearted way, and yet we have an incredible working relationship already built in. We have a lot of confidence in taking on these individual roles and doing so in a way that may best serve CNU.

Stop Begging For More: 3 Business Principles for NonProfit Organizations

And why the word “nonprofit” is the wrong thing to call a 501c3

Listen to Episode 55 of the Growability® Podcast for a 17-minute conversation about nonprofit organizations using business principles and tactics for making the world a better place.

My client was in a quagmire of uncertainty. There wasn’t enough money. The team was not making enough money. Under-performers filled many positions. The two board members who were involved with this organization didn’t seem to care about the internal management of the program services. They were more interested in sexy results. This is the why my client was approaching donors with a mindset of deep need and poverty. It was an Oliver Twist-esque ask of “Please sir, may I have some more?” And donors weren’t interested.

My client had a desperate need for a mindset change and the application of fundamental principles of business. They are not along in this.

Legal IRS registrations aside (you still have to file your organization’s 501c3 according to the rules), nonprofit leaders need to lose the nonprofit mindset.

Don’t confuse “nonprofit” with a successful company making the world a better place, and is funded by donations. That’s not a nonprofit.

A nonprofit organization is a company that runs out of money and goes out of business.

Your nonprofit should actually make a profit. If it’s not, your cause will float away in red ink. Nonprofit organizations should use a for-profit business operating system. Conversely, there is a lot for-profit businesses should learn from the nonprofit world. In my consulting work with Growability Consulting, I teach clients 12 fundamental principles that every organizational leader must know, whatever their organization’s IRS filing. Here are three of the most essential.

Don’t be a “nonprofit” organization. Be a “for-purpose” organization.

Every company, no matter its status with the IRS, should be a company with purpose. Leaders lead with vision, bringing clarity on the unique value the organization is bringing into the world. And it’s not enough to simply “know your purpose.” The organization needs to decide based on purpose. Purpose is your guide rail. This makes the difference between good and great organization. Purpose statements that are essentially a word salad on a poster will not inspire or motivate anyone. Purpose that is clear and interesting can take the entire organization to undreamed of locations. Ask the following questions about your nonprofit:

Does your organization have a clearly stated purpose your team and stakeholders know and understand? Do your people know why you exist?

Does your organization’s vision paint a clear picture of the future that could exist if you fulfill your purpose? Can you quantify your vision?

Does your organization have a mission statement that clearly articulates how you will achieve your vision and serve your purpose?

Make a list of every program activity your organization executes on a weekly or monthly basis. Does every activity align with your stated purpose, vision, and mission?

Measure everything, but count what matters.

Having worked in a nonprofit world for most of my career, I know it’s all about metrics. I was employed by a program-heavy nonprofit. They had pages of metrics every month — books of metrics at the end of the year. These were apart from fundraising and financial metrics. Metrics are good. But what we most need to measure are outcomes. Nonprofit leaders should not deceive themselves into thinking they’re succeeding because they are measuring everything other than desired outcomes. I work with a lot of churches. One of the obvious measurements for a church is attendance. Butts in the chairs every Sunday. But, for most churches, the bigger goal has to do with changed-lives and discipleship. That’s a lot tougher to figure out. However, it’s essential to figure that out because that’s what really matters for their organization. Ask the following questions for your nonprofit:

What really matters in your organization? What defines success?

What are you measuring now? Are your numbers inputs, outputs, or outcomes?

What would you like to measure but think you can’t? What will it take to get that measurement?

Determine your customer and define your stakeholders

Yes, nonprofits have customers. And they may not be who you think they are. Nonprofit organizations have a unique place in the community, with more complexity and nuance than the simple exchange of goods and services for money. Thus, nonprofit leaders must be clear on the on the following relationships as a minimum:

The Board Are they active? Are they overactive? Do they provide the right amount of accountability?

Program Beneficiaries: What expertise are you bringing to the world and how is that making people’s lives better? Who are the beneficiaries of your expertise?

Donors: What specific value do you bring to your donor base? What does giving to your organization do for the donor? Why do people give to your organization? Which kind of donor is most necessary for you to continue? (Foundations, individuals, community organizations, government?)

Vendors/Partners: Who are the other people/organizations necessary for you to accomplish your vision? Now, which group’s behavior is most critical for you to achieve your outcomes?

That’s your customer. Only one of these groups can be your customer, and it’s critical to know exactly who these customers are. Nonprofit leaders must know the market. Lack of market awareness is the reason many nonprofits fail. For most nonprofits, your customers are your donors. Every nonprofit leader should do the following with their team:

Define your stakeholders.

Be clear on your organizational value proposition.

Determine which stakeholder is your customer.

Create customer personas.

Determine the competitive advantage you provide for each persona.

Nonprofit organizations can thrive when they implement basic principles in the business world. Nonprofit leaders must be strategic about what they plan and what they measure. There is no reason to have a mindset of poverty and want. No more begging for more. Oliver Twist can have a full stomach from now on. (I’m happy to report that with implementing these and other business-oriented strategies, my client’s organization is now stronger and healthier than ever!) Keep your sights on target and be:

Guided by purpose.

Measure what counts.

Know their customers and the market they serve. Business smarts and strategy make for long-term nonprofit success.

Without going too deep into details, and to be clear I only saw this from a distance, last year a group of NANOWRIMO users realized that one of the forum mods was grooming underage site users and pushing them to join a fetish site. They brought this to forum leadership, site leadership, and the FBI in some order. It went several months with no response, then someone from NNWM tipped off the fetish site which purged the relevant data. Eventually the users went public, which finally got a reaction, but still wasn’t handled well by the org

During the fallout to that, large chunks of staff resigned in disgrace or out of disgust. That plus other drama led to local orgs cutting ties en masse, which was reacted to poorly. Sponsors seem to be calling the shots, which would be an improvement over the leadership except that a couple of the sponsors are AI shilling companies and also that’s a bad sign long term

So... it seems I accidentally deleted an ask rather than answering it. To whoever asked "is it okay to visit SeaWorld? Does the money go to giving the orcas good care?"... here is your answer!

The SeaWorld parks, as well as Busch Gardens, Discovery Cove, and a few others, are operated by the recently renamed United Parks and Entertainment, a for-profit theme park company. Like any other corporation, their first goal is to remain profitable. Obviously, a large portion of that goes to corporate leadership and shareholders. But that's far from unique to United, or theme parks in general. It's a byproduct of the greedy world we live in. If you're willing to buy a ticket to Disney or Six Flags, then buying a ticket to a SeaWorld or Busch Gardens is no more immoral.

According to the AZA, approximately 46% of their members are for-profit. And while AZA zoos certainly vary in quality (anywhere from "acceptable" to "exceptional" in my opinion), for-profit status does not cheapen or detract from the work they do. In fact, for-profit institutions often have more financial freedom for animal care and conservation efforts than their non-profit counterparts. Non-profit zoos and aquariums are wonderful places, but believe me when I say there's a startling amount of politics in every aspect of their management. Non-profit status does not automatically make a zoo better, and for-profit status does not automatically make a zoo worse.

Now... do SeaWorld ticket sales go toward giving their orcas (and other animals) good care? Yes.

While it's certainly simplistic for parks to claim, as they do, "just by buying a ticket today you're helping save animals in the wild!"... it's not exactly a lie. Being for-profit, SeaWorld doesn't ask for donations to fund park operations or outreach endeavours. That revenue is generated by selling tickets, merchandise, food, etc. The same goes for their wildlife rescue and rehab program, Rising Tide conservation program, Coral Rescue Center, and the SeaWorld-Busch Gardens Conservation Fund, as well as partner organizations like OCEARCH and the Hubbs-SeaWorld Research Institute.

Take ticket sales away, and they can't care for their animals, or continue to fund conservation projects. While I don't know the whole story of what exactly is going on with Marineland Antibes, it appears that the park is in a dire financial situation due to plummeting attendance, to the point that they can no longer maintain their killer whale habitat and are trying to offload their animals onto an Asian aquarium or, potentially, an as-of-yet non-existent third party sea pen. While certainly well-meaning, years of boycotts against Marineland ultimately put their animals in a position where they are not being properly cared for. And it would be horrifying if the same thing happened to SeaWorld. I don't think many people, in their fervor to punish the parks for their perceived misdeeds and save the animals, thought about what the reality of driving a zoological facility into financial ruin would look like.

Don't get me wrong, SeaWorld's shift toward promoting itself as a thrill park that also does conservation rather than a marine facility that happens to have roller coasters annoys me. I would have rather they built a separate, neighboring park for the rides, or at least integrated them into the existing park less obtrusively (Disney's Animal Kingdom, for example, seemlessly integrates the theme park and zoo elements, although they have the benefit of the incredibly talented Imagineering team behind them). But as tiresome as the constant roller coaster announcements are, they are what kept the company afloat financially in the years immediately following Blackfish, drawing in a crowd that previously had no interest in the parks, and for that I'm grateful. Thankfully, SeaWorld is in a better spot nowadays. But the only way to convince them that their animals, not their roller coasters, are what people want to see... is to visit and see the animals.

In short, yes, part of your SeaWorld ticket funds care for their orcas and their many admirable projects. Now if only more of it went to giving their staff better salaries.
