Spiked Koopa Is Not A Koopa But A Bros.

So the boss named Spiked Koopa who is a member of the Brown Sugar Pirates is not a actually Koopa, but rather the species Hammer Bros. are a part of.

This is because in Japanese his named does not contain Noko or NokoNoko, but rather is Toge Burosu meaning Spike Bro. Due to his shell being a different model from typical Bros. Shells, he is able to retract inside of it and uses it in boss fights. While some people have suggested turtles like Hammer Bros. are Koopas, it hasn't actually been stated to my knowledge.

Koopa The Quick In SM64DS Has Met Mario Before

So many people have question on whether or not Super Mario 64 DS just Super Mario 64 but expanded upon, non-canon, or completely separate events entirely. I fall under the camp that it is a separate event that happens in universe.

So first of my reasoning, I believe while a game can have a plot and gameplay that is similar to previous game, if details about such as it's plot and it being called a sequel alongside the events in said game being different enough from the original. That it can be considered it's own separate event in the games. For example BS Super Mario USA and Super Mario Bros.: The Lost Levels. My examples of this is that the presence of Luigi, Wario, Yoshi King Boo, King Goomboss, Mario and Friends getting captured, new locations, and possibly Peach's modern dress all point to this game being a separate event.

I think this game takes place before Super Mario Sunshine and after Super Mario 64, this is because of what characters are present, Peach is still using the SM64 Castle, and Peach now wearing her modern dress(that is if her outfit change is canon). But now for my smoking gun on why I believe SM64DS is not only a separate event from SM64, but has to take place after SM64.

In Super Mario 64 DS when you race Koopa The Quick as Mario you get the following line of dialogue. "Well, if it isn't Mario! Long time no see. You've put on a few pounds since I last saw you. Too much pasta and lounging huh? You should really get some exercise. Hey how about a race to the mountaintop where the Big Bob-omb was?" This is shows up the Koopa The Quick in this game knows who Mario is and has raced him before. I believe is is referencing the events in of SM64. This is similar to what we see a Bob-omb Buddy do in Super Mario Galaxy 2.
