Fox News: India racing to contain deadly Nipah virus outbreak as hundreds are tested in Kerala state
Health officials in India are racing Thursday to contain an outbreak of the Nipah virus, which has already killed two and carries a fatality rate the World Health Organization says is as high as 75%.
Around 800 people have been tested over the last few days in the country’s southern Kerala state, with two adults and a child placed in a hospital after receiving a positive diagnosis, according to Reuters.
"We are testing human beings... and at the same time experts are collecting fluid samples from forested areas that could be the hotspot for the spread," Veena George, the state’s health minister, told the news agency. "We are in a stage of hypervigilance and detection."
Public offices, government buildings and religious institutions have been shuttered in parts of the region as samples of bat urine, animal droppings and half-eaten fruit were taken from the village where the first victim lived, Reuters also reports.

The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) describes the Nipah virus as being zoonotic — meaning that it can be transmitted from animals to people — and that fruit bats are the primary carriers of it in nature.
"Nipah virus is also known to cause illness in pigs and people," the CDC says, adding, "Infection with NiV is associated with encephalitis (swelling of the brain) and can cause mild to severe illness and even death."
The World Health Organization (WHO) says the Nipah virus fatality rate is estimated at 40% to 75%, but that it can "vary by outbreak depending on local capabilities for epidemiological surveillance and clinical management."
"Infected people initially develop symptoms including fever, headaches, myalgia (muscle pain), vomiting and sore throat," WHO also said. "This can be followed by dizziness, drowsiness, altered consciousness, and neurological signs that indicate acute encephalitis. Some people can also experience atypical pneumonia and severe respiratory problems, including acute respiratory distress. Encephalitis and seizures occur in severe cases, progressing to coma within 24 to 48 hours."

The CDC says the virus is transmitted through direct contact with infected animals or humans and their bodily fluids, or by eating food products that have been contaminated by animals.

Nipah virus: Schools, colleges closed in Kerala's Kozhikode indefinitely
As the Nipah virus outbreak intensifies in Kerala, the government has announced the indefinite closure of educational institutions and Beypore harbour in the Kozhikode region, while ramping up containment and contact tracing efforts.
Tumblr media
The Nipah virus outbreak in Kerala has led to the temporary closure of all educational institutes, including schools, colleges, and tuition centres in the Kozhikode region.
The state government has also announced that Beypore harbour will suspend its operations until further notice as the region lies within a designated containment zone.
IDENTIFICATION OF INDEX CASE AND ONGOING TRACING EFFORTS
The Kerala state government has confirmed the identification of the man who was the patient zero, or index case, of the ongoing Nipah virus outbreak.
The government is rigorously tracking mobile tower locations to trace the source and location of infection. The man succumbed to the virus on August 30. His son and brother-in-law, along with two others he was in contact with at the hospital, continue receiving treatment.
“No new positive cases have been reported as yet, and 94 high-risk contacts have tested negative, which is a relief,” said Health Minister Veena George, as per ANI. The government is simultaneously focusing on contact tracing of a sixth person confirmed to be infected with the Nipah virus.
CONTAINMENT EFFORTS IN THE AFFECTED ZONES
Kozhikode City Mayor Beena Philip has declared all areas where the index case travelled as containment zones.
Meanwhile, Kozhikode District Collector A Geetha has organised for educational institutions to shift to online classes for the upcoming week and advised students against indulging in holiday-related festivities.
Geetha also announced that Beypore harbour would remain closed until further orders. Two alternate sites have been allocated for the landing and sale of fishing vessels’ catch while the harbour’s operations are suspended.
IMPACT ON HEALTH WORKERS AND INFRASTRUCTURE
On a concerning note, Health Minister Veena George reported that out of the 1,080 people on the contact list of infected individuals, 327 are health workers. This includes 29 people in other districts who have contact with those infected.
Despite this, George affirms that all those currently infected are part of the first wave of the infection, which has resulted in two clusters.
The first cluster includes family members of the index case, while the second includes individuals who came into contact with him at the hospital where he sought treatment.

Kozhikode: In the wake of the Nipah virus infection, all educational institutes in Kerala's Kozhikode will remain shut for a week until next Sunday, September 24. This includes schools, professional colleges, and tuition centres.
Meanwhile, online classes will be ensured throughout the week, the district administration said on Friday.
Health minister Veena George has said on Friday that at present, the contact list of infected persons has 1,080 people while 130 people have been newly included today in the list. Out of all this 327 people in the list are health workers.
A total of 29 people in other districts are in the contact list of Nipah-infected people. Among them, 22 are from Malappuram, one from Wayanad and three each from Kannur and Thrissur, said Veena George.
In the high-risk category, 175 are common people and 122 are healthcare workers.
The Health Minister further informed that the number of people in the contact list is likely to increase as the test result of the person who died on August 30 has come out positive making it the index case of Nipha in the district.
As of now, six positive cases of Nipah Virus have been reported in the state.
As many as 17 persons who had attended the cremation of the man who died on August 30 were put under isolation. While four of the active cases are undergoing treatment in hospitals.
All hospitals treating Nipah cases should form a medical board to meet twice a day and should hand over the report to the health department. The district collector has issued orders regarding this on the basis of the infectious disease control protocols of the state.

Two Nipah virus deaths in Kerala, Mandaviya confirms; central team dispatched
Apart from Kerala, the presence of Nipah viral antibodies in bats was also found in Tamil Nadu, Karnataka, Goa, Maharashtra, Bihar, West Bengal, Assam Meghalaya and Pondicherry.
Tumblr media
NEW DELHI: Two deaths reported from Kerala’s Kozhikode district were caused by Nipah virus, Union Health Minister Mansukh Mandaviya confirmed on Tuesday.
A central team of experts has also been dispatched to Kerala to take stock of the situation and assist the state government in the management of the Nipah virus infection, the minister said.
“It has been confirmed that the two deaths reported from Kozhikode were caused by Nipah virus,” Mandaviya told reporters. “Our expert team has reached Kerala.”
The minister said he has spoken with the Kerala Health Minister Veena George on the matter.
He also said samples of four more people suspected to be infected with the Nipah virus, a zoonotic virus, which can be transmitted from animals to humans, from Kerala have been sent to the National Institute of Virology (NIV) in Pune for testing.
But, he said, as the authorities have prior experience of tackling the disease they will not let the virus spread.
This is the third time Kerala’s Kozhikode has reported deaths due to the Nipah virus. It was earlier reported in the state in 2018 and 2021.
Mandaviya said the Nipah virus cases are reported during this season.
Guidelines have also been issued on safety measures so that the virus could be prevented from spreading in humans as well as among animals, he added.
Mandaviya also said the centre has also dispatched safety gears like PPE Kits to the state.
In a survey, the Indian Council of Medical Research’s National Institute of Virology (ICMR-NIV) has found evidence that the Nipah virus is in circulation in the bat population across nine states and one Union Territory in the country.
Apart from Kerala, the presence of Nipah viral antibodies in bats was also found in Tamil Nadu, Karnataka, Goa, Maharashtra, Bihar, West Bengal, Assam Meghalaya and Pondicherry.
Earlier, the state authorities had declared the two suspected deaths as ‘unnatural deaths’. Relatives of one of the deceased have also been admitted to the ICU, the Kerala health department has said.
Following the deaths, the health department sounded an alert in the district.
The Kerala government has also set up a control room in Kozhikode and advised people to use masks as a precautionary measure.
In a Facebook post, Chief Minister Pinarayi Vijayan said his government is viewing the two deaths seriously.
He, however, said there is no need to worry as most of those who were in close contact with the deceased are under treatment.
The Kerala health minister chaired a high-level meeting to evaluate the situation in Kozhikode and said that the entire health machinery in the district is on alert.
