This is SLA Industries (1993). That’s pronounced “slay,” incidentally, a fact that should give you some insight into the overall temperament of the game.

Let’s see if I can do this in the character limit. The titular company is run by Mr. Slayer, a pumpkin-headed supervillain, and it sits at the center of a horrible, violent universe. The company headquarters is surrounded by post-apocalyptic city ruins called Cannibal Sectors that are filled with all manner of mutants, monsters and serial murderers. Players are freelancers (of COURSE, why would there be paid benefits in a dystopia) who hunt monsters and take part in office politics.

There is a laundry list of super obvious influences. The goth and industrial music scenes are big one — lots of Siouxsie’s with big guns (and top hats) in the art. 40K is another, both in some of the art and in the waist-deep approach to lore. It being a product of Scotland, I expect 2000AD is in the mix, though not as front and center as I would have guessed. There’s some cyberpunk elements (the megacorp, for one), but SLA’s prime science fiction is more in line with the schlocky dystopias of Death Race 2000 and The Running Man, especially in the game’s notion that the players are probably on-camera through most of their exploits, an eerie (if likely entirely accidental) anticipation of reality TV. All of this is filtered, to varying degrees, through the aesthetics and sensibilities of early 90s manga and anime. The result is a big old stew pot of the likes of Rifts and Battlelords, but slathered in nihilism rather than bombast.

System? Oh god, there’s a system under all this? Oh, yea, there it is, on page 110. There is so much lore in this book that even when I am staring right at the system, I can’t really parse it, because I am still reeling from all the factions and history. It looks complicated and embedded in too many words.

49- Your favorite character

Last time I got this question, I talked about Sable, but mentioned that picking a favorite was so difficult that my answer would definitely change by the next time someone asked. And I was right! Now my favorite character is Parmesan.

He's such a delightfully pathetic little guy. Soul of a terrified prey animal in the body of an eight-ton reptilian tank. Grew up in an obscenely rich family and never learned how to do anything for himself. Scared of washing machines. Believes wholeheartedly that he's going to die every time he catches a cold. Named himself after cheese so he could match his bestie. Got kicked out of his house because he didn't know you had to pay to live there. Beautiful.

Of course, I have deeper reasons for liking him beyond the silly stuff, but we'll get to that when we get to it :)

50. Your favorite lore tidbit

Ooh, this is a tough one to answer without spoiling anything. I guess I'll go with my progens' shared backstory, since that's more or less a self-contained thing that doesn't give too much away.

Fluffington and Wraith were both raised in the same clan: a town in Dragonhome known for its rich folklore and love of ancient history. The two of them became friends at a very young age, with the shy Wraith drawn to Fluffington's confidence, and they only grew closer as time went on. They were basically that joke about how introverts make friends when an extrovert decides to adopt them.

Both dragons were absolutely obsessed with the weird and unexplained - the walking skeletons of Cairnstone Rest, the glowing crystals from the Dustcarve Dig, the rumored disappearances within the Dragonhome Preservation Guild - and eventually decided to set out together and travel the world in search of other magical oddities.

They've spent most of their adult lives exploring Sornieth's most infamous paranormal locations, collecting all kinds of strange treasures and artifacts along the way. Fluffington is especially protective of his newfound hoard and will do anything to get his hands on a new magical object.

I wonder, though... after roaming the world for so long, why stop and settle down in the Ashfall Waste? Seems like an odd decision on their part if you ask me.

33. The traditions taught to youngsters in your clan

The older dragons of Firebird's Roost are very protective of their younger clanmates. Many of them were blacksmiths and factory workers who experienced the cruelty of the forgemasters firsthand before coming to the village, so they're determined to keep the next generation from suffering the same way.

It's common for them to tell stories about their old jobs and the terrible conditions they had to work under; not to scare the kids, necessarily, but to help them learn from the past and appreciate the freedom they have in the Roost.

Faline's accounts are usually the truest to life, while Nightfall's are full of exaggerated gory details. At least, I hope they're exaggerated...

Tagged by @aurevell for realsies this time, so here's Stiles meeting Scott in the twilight au. Anything in these brackets [ ] will be changed later on, idk anything about lacrosse lmao 🫣

   Coach Finstock is fucking insane. Gym is, unfortunately, Stiles’s third period of the day and before lunch–way too early if you asked him–and worse, it was held by an absolute madman. Coach Finstock is supposedly the school’s lacrosse coach and third period is when all the players have gym. So despite knowing nothing about the game and not even being on the team, Stiles is learning how to play lacrosse.  He sucks. To be fair, Stiles could’ve told you that before he was forced to attempt it, as most physical activities and forms of exercise do not mesh well with Stiles’s lack of muscle and baby deer ways. Dziadek had wanted desperately for his only grandson to be on a baseball team, and Stiles had given it a good try. Unfortunately, you need to be able to run more than five feet without tripping all over yourself to do that, and so Dziadek’s dream of little league games had crashed and burned. Much like Stiles’s current attempts to earn a passing grade in gym. Coach Finstock couldn’t seem to get that Stiles did not play lacrosse, did not want to play lacrosse, and would not be good at it anyway. Any and all attempts to reason with the man had ended in Finstock’s little red whistle blown right into Stiles’s face and making a good try at bursting his ear drums. Stiles decided to play along, at the very least to preserve his hearing.  So Stiles is tossing lacrosse balls–very poorly, mind you–from the stick shoved into his hands when he entered the gymnasium to someone who seems to actually be good at the game. The guy, Manny or Henry or something, looks bored to tears blocking Stiles’s shots.  “[lacrosse talk]” A voice says right in Stiles’s ears, and Stiles can’t stop the jump he does in response. “GEEZ dude, stomp or something, what the hell-” “Sorry! Sorry, I didn’t mean to scare you. I just noticed you needed a little help.” The guy steps around Stiles and towards Henry (he’s sure it was Henry). He’s around the same height, soft brown eyes on a kind face and a weirdly crooked jaw. His hair droops in front of his eyes and Stiles is reminded of every puppy he’s ever seen.
