Trenton Lee Stewart was like: Neurodivegence is a superpower. Fuck capitalism. Killing people is wrong when there are alternatives. Immigrants are heroes. Women are awesome. Black people are freaking gorgeous. People are good at heart.
And then turned that into a book series. And succeeded.

Curtain's plan of pretending to be Mr. Benedict has the equal and opposite energy of Mr. Benedict sneaking into the building with a red wig

I know it's late for this, but here's how I think characters in the Mysterious Benedict Society would have reacted to the solar eclipse.
Nicholas- obviously he'd be so excited for this. The world goes dark, he passes out with joy.
Rhonda- buys everyone eclipse glasses and makes sure they understand the dangers of looking at the sun
Number Two- complains about the traffic because tons of tourists are coming for the eclipse and her mom has a ton of weird conspiracies about what the eclipse means, but once the eclipse is happening, she very much enjoys it.
Milligan- happy that he's able to experience such a unique and special moment with his daughter that he will treasure forever
Miss. Perumal- educates the children on how solar eclipses happen and bakes cookies for the watch party
Kate- climbs a tree so she can be closer to the sun and get a better view
Martina- was planning on forcing the tetherball team to practice through the eclipse, but begrudgingly cancels practice to join Kate in the tree
Reynie- is excited about the eclipse in a very average, but endearing way.
Sticky- is fascinated by and excited for the eclipse, but then he saw a video about what happened to that one person that stared at the sun and even though he knows that won't happen to him because he has the right glasses, he still can't get the thought out of his head. His friends help him calm down, and he ends up enjoying the eclipse.
Constance- pretends she doesn't care about it that much, but she actually does and writes an incredibly beautiful poem about it afterwards which she shows to no one.
Nathaniel/Curtain- cancels classes at the Institute to view the eclipse and somehow turns it into a metaphor about himself. I don't know exactly how he would do this, something about the moon being the darkness of Nicholas that blocks out the brilliance of the sun (himself), but the sun is all powerful and shall surely rise again, I don't know, something like that. However, if this happened during season 2, he would 100% incorporate it into his cult's doctrine just because he can. He'd make that the day and hour of his evil plans just for the symbolism.
Jackson and Jillson- they also saw the video about the people who stared at the sun and they have made it their personal mission to warn everyone about proper eye protection
SQ- he's happy to be able to spend the day with his dad watching the sky. He later draws a really beautiful picture of the eclipse.
Jeffers- stares directly at the sun and suffers permanent eye damage despite being warned multiple times
Dr. Garrison- fascinated by the eclipse for scientific reasons, but takes advantage of the distraction to escape and begin hatching an evil plot
Marlon- does not care at all that the eclipse is happening but goes along with whatever Curtain wants
Captain Noland- views the eclipse as a sign of coming doom
Cannonball- is 100% on board with whatever conspiracy Noland believes
Number Two's mom- views the eclipse as a sign of coming doom
Number Two's brother- is 100% on board with whatever conspiracy his mom believes
Number Two's sister- doesn't care at all that the eclipse is happening, but goes along with whatever her mom wants
And I know I've been doing mostly show characters, but...
Crawlings- stares directly at the sun and suffers permanent eye damage. But he only stared at it with one eye because he kept the other one closed thinking that would somehow save him from being burned, so now he wears an eyepatch over his bad eye, but that's not the same one as the one where he lost his eyebrow, so it doesn't cover that damage either, he just looks like a mess.
The Rest of the Ten Men- think Crawlings is an idiot for looking at the sun and claim they don't care at all that the eclipse is happening (Sharpe lowkey does, would never admit it).
Seymour, the orphanage cat- continues being a cat. Is very confused when it is suddenly nighttime. Then when its daytime again, he shrugs it off and goes about his business.

This post has a niche audience of about three existing people BUT.
The Benedict Twins as the Vacker brothers anyone? (Bods if you see this, this is your fault)
The Benedict twins as born-to-an-influential-Elvin-family is already a HUGELY interesting concept given the fact that twins are greatly prejudiced against in the KOTLC universe. So if the Benedict family was like the Vackers they might try to pull something like the Songs did where they just pretend the brothers aren’t twins, and one is slightly older than the other.
Nathaniel was the one allowed to exist a year before Nicholas was “born,” so he always holds his “extra experience” (of being a baby) over Nicholas’ head. They look identical, yes, theoretically, but they style themselves so completely differently that they are able to pretend Nicholas is a year younger and no one questions it for the longest time.
Now in order to get to the Fitz-and-Alvar model I’m working towards, Nicholas obviously joins the Black Swan and Nathaniel joins the Neverseen. (Nathaniel joined the neverseen first and much longer before Nicholas got involved, so it’s a shock and a betrayal to see his brother for the first time on the other side.) and this makes PERFECT SENSE, because of how the tmbs characters would handle twin bias in the lost cities.
Nathaniel sees it as a grand injustice, and develops a grudge against his family for trying to hide the “imperfection” of their children, similar to Alvar’s grudge against the Vacker legacy.
Nicholas sees us as something that needs to change, but allies with the people trying to work somewhat with the council. He doesn’t want to cause a commotion or send a message—he just wants things fixed.
I think if Nathaniel was sedated with soporidine and had his memories wiped when he became no longer useful (like Alvar did) he would remain equally as angry especially since he’s the type of guy to want to be in charge? And I think when he goes through his whole “whoever did all that, it wasn’t me, I don’t remember it” phase, unlike fitz, Nicholas isn’t angry at all. He WANTS to believe it, so he does, and they go back to being brothers, and…
…Nathaniel gets his memories back. And just like Alvar, a switch is flipped. Now he’s livid at his family AND at the neverseen. I foresee him playing a Lady Gisela move and just… making his own neverseen branch. But instead of immediately trying to kill him, Nicholas pleads with him to come back. It doesn’t work.
But the real question is, in a mutant troll hive, if Nathaniel were to fall into a pod and Nicholas was frantically pressing buttons, trying to figure out how it worked, and suddenly the pod closed up and started filling with toxic orange goo, and Nathaniel was banging on the glass and yelling, screaming, pleading with his brother to save his life despite his obsession with dignity…
…would Nicholas keep pressing buttons?
I think he would.
I don’t think he would let his brother die.
Because he has the opposite of Fitz’s character flaws. He always sees the best in people. Especially his brother.
Nathaniel escapes. But he wonders, for the first time, if maybe Nicholas isn’t the traitor.
Just some Benedict brothers kotlc Vacker family au thoughts that no one asked for.

I love how Book Curtain was just a grumpy old man who thinks things are better his way and has no problem hurting others while Show Curtain was like “taking over the world and destroying lives and families is the only way to deal with my trauma, be a decent father, become an overnight celebrity sensation, and get my brother’s attention, and if my brother and his friends don’t want to be my friends after everything I’ve done for them, then I shall force them to be my friends and bring them to my very special tea party.”

okay so MBS theory time
This is exclusively about the books bc the show Waiting Room is different, but in case you don’t know, the Waiting Room in the books is basically a big, dark, pit of mud with tons of bugs that the children who get sent there have to sit in for hours. Horrifying, I know, which is probably why it was changed in the show.
Anyways, the Waiting Room has always been really weird to me, because there are a thousand different ways to punish a kid. At one point, Curtain actually mentions that he knows how children are “adverse to pain” or something along those lines, and he also literally electrocutes the Society in book 2, so we know he’s not against hurting kids. But the Waiting Room isn’t actually painful (though definitely abusive/traumatic). You could argue that this is because he was afraid of getting caught, but Curtain had essentially gotten rid of anyone who could raise the alarm at that point. So, what’s the deal with the Waiting Room?
I think it’s because Curtain doesn’t think that literal pain is the worst way you can hurt someone. The way he mentioned “I’ve found children are adverse to pain” was extremely cold and callous, which is in character for him, but to me also implies that he considers being particularly adverse to pain to be a foreign concept. We also know that Curtain has nightmares and hallucinations similar to Benedict as a result of his narcolepsy, and that this at least somewhat contributed to his obsession with control.
All this to say, I think the Waiting Room was designed to reflect Curtain’s own nightmares. A room in which you cannot see, cannot keep yourself clean, and cannot tell what is crawling over you? It’s a complete lack of control. That’s what Curtain considers to be a suitable punishment, because it is something he deals with every night.
