All my horrible little sons are growing pretty well. There is still one upper house that needs prepped to move some of the little ones to for space and then that's all the space we've got. Somehow I think I've pulled off the logistics of fitting nearly 6000 poinsettias in the space I have to grow them. But now we'll have to see how they finish growing and then how many we end up selling.
#the selling part is giving me particular anxiety#because our new retail manager is still learning the ropes and office manager has not yet dealt with poinsettia season orders#and i spend all my time keeping the bastards alive and organized#and there are so many. there are so so many#and there are so so many furnaces on their last breath#and my crew is several part time retirees who misunderstand every other word i say#and the retail crew is all teenagers with little plant knowledgw#greenhouse content

i think my fave dumb live sports commentator thing is where they gotta pepper their soliloquies with random "{worst, best} [adjective] [adjective] [noun] since [year]" facts, eg "packers's worst five game start since 2012", because with the correct carefully-chosen adjectives you can generate a shocking-sounding stat from literally anything
#insert relevant xkcd comic here#anyway i'm checking out the neighborhood bar in my new neighborhood and it is: good#moody twentysomething reading franz fanon in one corner#couple of ladies at the bar full on making out with each other you go ladies#retirees reminiscing on their youth in another corner#heard three different languages tonight and the bartender is fluent in all of them#(i of course am Posting)

I gotta say, really glad that the main criticisms for my "artists have more options" post has been that it is very USA centric and doesn't work for people in low populated areas without an art community. This has led to people giving more perspectives and options, which is always appreciated, and also because it's a completely correct criticism. Like yeah it is in fact made from the perspective of a USAmerican who lives in a highly populated state with a thriving art community especially in rural areas, you got me there, can't argue with that, gimme some fresh perspectives I love to hear that. Thank you for not making my notifications hell, and thank you for giving me more perspectives im going to give you a little kissy on the forehead
#simon says#i was worried that since it hit 10k notes#I was gonna deal with a lot of people with low confidence getting mad at me bc 'they are too much of a failure to do this how dare you'#but im so glad because it hasn't been that#it has been people bringing up good counterpoints and perspectives I appreciate hearing!#like yeah I knew it was gonna end up being US (and probably Canada) centric because I'm American and never left the country before#so my perspective on career artistry outside the country is very VERY limited to say the least#but I didn't even consider that my perspective is also skewed by where in the US I live#I live in Florida which I mentioned before and feel safe mentioning because it's a very populated state#and a majority of the economy is tourism based#so there's a pretty huge thriving art community here because there's LOTS of people visiting who want cool art for whatever reason#and LOTS of retirees with money to spend and a new florida house to decorate#and LOTS of college age kids without money but an apartment they wanna furnish so they'll buy art anyways#shows and shops and gallery work are huge here for a reason#5 percent of the entire population are snowbirds. people from the north who live here during the winter#so needless to say it's far easier to start making art selling prints and handmade magnets at a booth for a weekend event here in Florida#compared to say... rural Nebraska#so I didn't even consider that because my journey as an artist started in a state with a small but passionate and growing art community#and my journey as a PROFESSIONAL artist started in another state that has a large and thriving art community even in rural areas#that it would absolutely have an effect on my perspective#i still believe there's always more options out there than you would believe and it's always good to explore and look#and if you're able to start building an art scene in a place that doesn't have one you should#but I definitely understand some folks better when they say that it's not always accessible to do so#art careers are not about fame or social media following but rather networking I still believe that because it's true#but yeah if you're in an area where your only option IS to sell online there's no shame in that#anyways hopefully that was coherent I just woke up from a nap and now im gonna play Frog Detective for the first time#smooching you all on the foreheads gently and lovingly thank you for opening my mind and not making my inbox hell

Of course there were protests in several cities also today against the horrible conditions for retirees under Iran's theocracy, as there are every day now and as have been ongoing for several years, while the pensioners literally can't afford to put decent food on their tables.
Here's one arbitrary video from today out of many, via JinHA, the Women's News Agency.
That particular one was with/for retired teachers in Kermanshah, western Iran.

The interesting thing about the farmer comment is that historically, farmers have always been struggling with feast or famine conditions, and the smaller farms that relied on sustenance farming were even worse off. When machines started to be utilized in the fields it helped to close the gap in food production and preventing shortages, but also led to crops getting cheaper generation after generation just so they could be marketable to the general public, which in turn made farmers even more economically unstable—the most stark version of this showing up in the great depression, where over a million farmers wound up displaced from the dustbowl but the combination of deflation combined with a surplus of food meant less than 1000 people total starved to death in America. It wasn't until the expansion (and rectification of bone-headed austerity measures) of food stamps/SNAP that this got rectified, since that program is specifically meant to kill 2 birds with one stone: ensuring poor people have cheap access to food staples and simultaneously making sure that farmers can continue to grow food.
Okay so I got Rednote because I heard about the whole migration thing and I never bothered to sign up before, and the cultural exchange has just been really fascinating
#fun fact! for every $1 spent using SNAP cards another $1.50 is added to the GDP#RFK (the real one not the freak crystal healing chimera) was so shocked when he went to survey impoverished communities#that he went home and told his children that they were incredibly lucky and they needed to “go do something for your country”#which was a little funny in retrospect because at least one of his kids was a toddler. what the hell is that kid supposed to do??#currently the weakest part of SNAP is that allowances for singles households are still small and there's no extra supplement like WIC#granted grocery prices make up a FAR smaller share of the average person's budget than it did about ~50 years ago.#ACTUAL biggest issue rn is housing supply is locally controlled so there's an artificial cap on new units being built by annoying retirees#which leads to unit cost spikes which leads to gentrification which leads to malcontent etc etc#well housing and also that Americans view themselves as consumers first and workers second but that's beside the point
