Nayanthara’s Fairy Tale, Unraveled: A Docu-Drama from Netflix
Nayanthara, the undisputed Queen of South Indian Cinema, is all set to unveil a different side of herself. Her much-anticipated docu-film, Nayanthara: Beyond the Fairy Tale, is slated for a November 18th release on Netflix, coinciding with her birthday.
From Wedding Bells to Silver Screen
The docu-film will touch upon her personal life, her love story with Vignesh Shivan, and her wedding. Besides, it will also chronicle her filmography and career.
From being a nobody to being one of the highest-paid actresses in the industry, Nayanthara has come a long way. The Netflix release will also shed light on her motherhood journey through surrogacy and the conservative controversies that hobbled it.
A Glimpse into the Private Life of a Public Figure
The 1-hour 21-minute documentary promises to take viewers behind the scenes.
In a recent interview, Nayanthara rejected rumours about her undergoing plastic surgeries. “I love doing my brows. I take the time to perfect it, because it’s the real game changer. I have had different brow faces over the years. Maybe that’s why people think my face is changing, and I keep looking different,” India Today quoted her as saying.

ED movies/shows I recommend <3
I watched this docu-series forever ago when it was on netflix, u can find it pirated online. great trigger for ED, also super interesting and only 3 episodes.
my all time favorite documentary. extremely relatable to me, you can find it on hbo max or possibly pirate it :)
a classic netflix original. i feel like everyone has seen this, but still incredibly good for motivation. my guilty pleasure movie haha.
incredibly interesting, and a different take on how someones ED may manifest. honestly worth it to watch just for the plot alone. i loved the dialogue between her and her ED.
(season 5, episode 15) these two degrassi episodes made me relapse, and tbh i love them for that. it also oddly made me appreciate Emma as a character a lot more. 10/10 show, i would highly recommend if you like nostalgic teen dramas.
another classic, i feel like this and degrassi exposed so many girls to the world of EDs. we love u cassie <3
finally this youtube video. bc lets be real, we are not sitting through a whole season just for the emma scenes.... also what do producers have against girls named Emma and EDs? lol

Is nascar docu on netflix as dramatic as dts for f1?
no not really...id say its a lot more balanced in like just kinda letting each driver say their own story/character instead of like, really pitting them against each other/casting a roll on them? so in that it already is a lot less drama-y than dts is IMO 👍 it also follows waaaaay fewer drivers so that helps

Netflix's Alexander: the making of a god.
So at like 2 am I discovered this docu-fiction exist. It's 8:30 am on the morning and I've just binged watch it. Worth it.
Him and Hephaestion being a thing right from the beginning. 1000+ points.
Points deducted for calling him "friend" though. and "Heph" cute but too modern, so kinda weird.
This Darius get bonus points for not being a coward, for being quite calm, caring for his wife, and upon learning that Alexander bedded her (a fact that seems to be inaccurate though) his reaction is not "she betrayed me" but "she hadn't much of a choice to survive and I'm gonna kill him".
Btw, not the documentary commented by professors in history and archeaology, saying Stateira, wife of Darius III, died giving birth to Alexander's son (and that Alexander rubbed it in Darius' face) because Plutarch - who was born 369 years after Alexander's death - said so. Other sources invalidate this theory (like the age of the child, being 4 to 7 years old when Stateira died, meaning he was already born when Alexander first met her). And other sources say Alexander only met her once, when he took Darius' camp and that was it.
However her daughter Strateira II (who might have been Barsine or her sister) did marry him but had no children with him.
He had 1 known son from Roxana, that's all. That's in part why his empire was so easily taken apart by his diadochi.
So I don't know why, except for drama) they went for that version nor why the professor corroborate it when it's the least likely.
Also Olympias' very modern make-up, mascara, blue eyeshadow, red lipsick. And Mazaeus' armor. WTF.
So far those are my main problems with the documentary. That and the greek/macedonian costumes and armor being too bleak.
Oh dear Hephaestion, you are never going home.
Look at him looking at Alexander as if he is thinking "you are lucky that I love you and I'm loyal to you, because I WILL follow you blindly to the end but gods it's not easy".
Alexander the Great, the embodiement of Live Fast, Die Young.
I'll very soon be older than he ever was but damn, what a life he had. Meanwhile here I am unemployed and purposeless.

btw since you have decide to join the "let’s support gabriel and suffer" club, you should watch "make or break". it’s a docu-series like drive to survive except it’s not made by netflix so there is no fake drama. (it was on prime but idk if it’s still on it. tho you can definitely find it in less legal ways). all the episodes are nice but if you just want to watch gabriel focus episodes, you should watch the last episode of season 1 (episode 2 is also about him and another brazilian but it’s the other Brazilian who’s winning in that one i think) + episode 5 of season 2 (but just the first part bc he gets injured in the episode so he’s not in the entire episode if i remember correctly). but like, the episodes are really nice (especially the last one of s1) and you learn more about gabriel so that’s always nice!
thank you, i was searching the other day things to watch so i can learn gabriel’s lore better 🤣 i will definitely watch it 🫶

So dokken is getting a biopic going straight to Netflix so it’s getting the dirt treatment I guess
However I don’t think a movie is enough time to tell the full story of these 70s and 80s bands. I think a mini docu series is better
Oh I 100% agree. One movie isn’t enough, it needs to be a series, especially one like dokken that can be dated back to the late 70’s and one with so so much band drama. I mean it’s possible it will get the dirt treatment, but unlike all of Crüe, Don actually gives a slight fuck about telling the truth and I have a feeling he’d never let it get released if it was all a bunch of shit.

A documentary on who Cleopatra truly was. Her lineage, accomplishments, and how she died.
I really feel like this is something people need to watch.
Discover the true Cleopatra: A 90-minute documentary With Zahi Hawass, Kathleen Martinez, and more…A Documentary by Curtis Ryan Woodside, Co-Produced by Sofia Aziz. Discover the REAL Cleopatra…A figure whose name and legacy is burned into the minds of billions. Coming from a tenacious Greek Macedonian family, she had to fight and even kill for her place on the throne, a noble attempt to save a failing Egypt. She left her mark during the final days of ancient Egypt. Her story has been warped so much throughout history, from biased opinions to praise, yet who was she really? Everyone thinks they know her; everyone has a different opinion, but most of those are modern, based on films and misinformed playwrights. How much do we really know about the true… Cleopatra.
A Film by Curtis Ryan Woodside Co-Produced by Sofia Aziz
I've no doubt many of you have heard of the Netflix docu-drama on Cleopatra that has caused considerable controversy. A show which has now become the lowest-rated program listed on Rotten Tomatoes. In my mind, to ignore hard data in favor of personal assumptions and political motivation is misguided at best. I love history but I want my history to be reliable and factual. What we know of Cleopatra is that her family wasn't even Egyptian. In regards to black history, there are many dynamic people who are known to have been black that are more than worthy of a documentary. How many people know about Henri Caesar I wonder? I know about him because I love everything to do with the Golden Age of Piracy. He is a man who served along side Edward Teach and has been ignored by Hollywood. And why do they do this? Because they don't want to put in the work it takes.
I have done first-hand research on Early California railroads and discovered history about Hispanics and Native Americans that had been previously ignored. History that was later made available to the Sacramento State Railroad Museum. In my mind, there is no excuse for misleading documentation about history. Do the research. Report what you found. Do not make assumptions. Do not mislead based on those assumptions. Doing so will cost a professional historian their reputation. For a person in Hollywood, it cost them little so long as people are willing to back their projects.

(in Docu-drama narrator voice) See Illustrations #2 and #3 for examples of "the difference between tragedy and comedy is perspective and distance". While, from a sufficiently remote point-of-view, these illustrations can be thought of as "fucking hilarious", when encountered in a close friend or relative, they will most likely be interpreted as "a cry for help".
For further examples, see "spent 18 straight hours binging romantic comedies on Netflix", "bought a sports car at age 50", and "still playing World of Warcraft".
i forgot how fucking hilarious "informational" mental health diagrams can be.

Stuff I'm Looking Forward To In September
It's Back to School season. I used to always gleam over Fall Movie, TV and Music Previews that magazine would do in and around September and now I'm doing my preview for this month! In addition to Labor Day (9/2), first day of Fall (9/22) as well as the 2nd Presidential Debate (scheduled for 9/10), MTV Video Music Awards (9/11), and Emmy Awards (9/15) here is what's on my radar this month:
Movies:
Beetlejuice Beetlejuice
I was a big fan of Tim Burton's 1988 original and now 36 years later, Burton and cast members, including Michael Keaton, return for a sequel. There have been more than a few sequels in recent years that came along 30+ years after the last film. Some better than others. But hopes are high for this one. Opening 9/6 (review to come).
Wise Guy: David Chase and the Sopranos
Alex Gibney is one of the great documentarians of our time and now he is turning his attention to one of the greatest TV shows of all time, The Sopranos and it's creator David Chase. Premieres 9/7 on Max (review to come).
The 4:30 Movie
Kevin Smith is back with his first film since Clerks III. This one is a semi-autobiographical look at teen film geeks in 1986. I love it already!!! Opening 9/13 (review to come).
Lee
Ellen Kuras has been one of the greatest cinematographers of the last 30 years, notably the work she's done with Ted Demme, Jonathan Demme, Spike Lee and Michel Gondry. In recent years she has very quietly been getting into directing as well. In this biopic, Kuras directs Kate Winslet as Lee Miller, a model-turn-war-photographer during World War II. Opens 9/27.
Megalopolis
Francis Ford Coppola is one of the greatest filmmakers of all time. His last movie was nine years ago. This one is being released in IMAX. I hope all of the behind the scenes drama doesn't overshadow the film itself because hopes are high! Opening 9/27.
Will & Harper
Mixing it up between documentary and narrative, director Josh Greenbaum is back with a new doc that was a Sundance hit. He is the director of one of my favorite documentaries of the last decade Too Funny to Fail so I am looking forward to this one. Premieres 9/27 on Netflix.
Music:
Karen O and Danger Mouse Lux Prima reissue
The Lux Prima collaboration between Karen O and Danger Mouse was my #1 Album of 2019. To celebrate the 5th anniversary, the album is getting a reissue with a new song and booklet. Album drops 9/20.
TV:
Nothin' But a Good Time: The Uncensored History of '80s Hair Metal
I've been digging a lot of the musical documentaries that Paramount+ has been doing, notably their recent Lollapalooza doc series. Now they are releasing a docu-series about the history of 80s hair metal. I'm looking forward to it and almost wish I had made it!?! Premieres 9/17 on Paramount+ (review to come).

‘Modern Masters: SS Rajamouli’: From Indian icon to global maestro
Watching ‘Modern Masters: SS Rajamouli’, a Netflix documentary, is like watching the filmmaker’s own drama!
Like the Indian-turned-global director treats his hero, the docu-film treats him the same way. Like his emotionally charged films, the documentary, too, tries to tap into the same beats. The last montage sequence of him winning an Oscar and the Golden Globe Award makes the audience cheer for him, just like they do for a hero’s triumph.

The Psychology of Serial Killer, April 28th, 2024, Parker Playhouse, Ft. Lauderdale FL
With Dr. Rachel Toles
If you think you know everything there is to know about serial killers by watching docu-dramas and documentaries on television, you are 99.8 percent incorrect. Being an amateur sleuth and detective myself, considering I have watched every single episode of CSI: Crime Scene Investigation franchise, not to mention I have read countless number of books on the subject and subjects themselves. I thought I had a pretty good handle on the subject until I came to the lecture/show this evening at the Parker. I then realized I know absolutely nothing. What I do know is the Hollywood serialized profile of serial killers, close, but no cigar. The truth of the matter; they could easily be your next-door neighbor, the person that bags your groceries, your Uber driver, or someone in your family. The question to ask yourself is - do we really know anyone - whether we're married to them, they’re are parents, or our children.
A fascination with the subject may not be the easiest thing to bring up in conversation or admit, especially in the days that we are now living in. However, I can confidently say that I have been fascinated with the subject for many years. It's not so much how the crimes or where are committed, but why? The psychological aspect of the human species has baffled man for thousands of years and continues to do. The human condition factors – genetic, environmental, social, etc. It seems whenever a new serial killer is unearthed, their story spreads like wildfire. How else could you explain the fascination with Ted Bundy, the Son of Sam, Jeffrey Dahmer, etc. The Netflix drama, DAHMER – Monster: The Jeffrey Dahmer Story, was the highest rated series in history. It is that psychological aspect that grabs all our attention and makes us want to know the complete story, ugly as it may be.
Dr. Rachel Toles, a renowned Clinical Psychologist and criminal expert is the speaker of this evening’s masterclass into the psychology of serial killers. Her extensive knowledge and experience were on full display this evening. The Psychology of Serial Killers not only delves into the minds of the killers, serial homicide, but turns the mirror on us and why we are so fascinated with their existence.
During her talk may questions were posed:
What makes a serial killer?
What is their motivation to kill over and over?
Are there different types of serial killers?
Is animal cruelty a red flag for later violence?
Do they possess common traits?
How do we defend ourselves against a serial killer?
Why are we so obsessed by them?
Lizzie Bourne, the moderator for this evening, conducted the introduction at the beginning of the evening, and assisted with the audience Q&A segment at the end. Dr. Toles posed various methods and scenarios during her talk. At the end of her ninety-minute narrative, I came away with a better understanding of the subject. My admiration for Dr. Toles and countless other Detectives, psychologists, medical and law enforcement personnel, who make this study their life, holds no bounds. It takes a special kind of person to inhabit the world of serial killers and homicides in general. Dr. Toles 40-city tour ended this evening in Ft. Lauderdale. If this subject interests you beyond the Hollywood façade, I suggest you delve into her website. Dr. Toles has a book set for release later this year. It was an enlightening and interesting evening well spent.
