I am low-key obsessed with Western Hunter Gatherers-- aka ancient indigenous paleo-Europeans. They had dark skin and blue eyes, like Cheddar Man-- unlike the lighter-skinned, dark-eyed Anatolian farmers who colonized Europe in Neolithic times (some of whom enslaved people of WHG descent, showing that slavery and colonization go back a long, long, loooong way).
This character here, the MFC of a story set during the Neolithic/Chalcolithic, is a mixture of WHG and Anatolian descent. Maybe I'll do something with her story someday...
This was done with Faber Castell Polychromos colored pencils in a Moleskine sketchbook.

Man of the Linear Pottery Culture

The Linear Pottery Culture is one of the most important archaeological cultures of Neolithic Europe, lasting from around 5500 BCE to 4500 BCE and deriving its name from the pairs of parallel lines arranged in spiral or meander patterns which ornamented the culture's pottery.

A Neolithic house in Skara Brae, Orkney Island, Scotland.
The village consisted of ten clustered houses, made of flagstones in earthen dams that provided support for the walls. The houses had stone hearths, beds, and cupboards. A primitive sewer system, with "toilets" and drains in each house, ended up in the ocean. Water was used to flush waste into a drain.
The site was occupied from roughly 3180 BC to about 2500 BC and is Europe's most complete Neolithic village. On average, each house measures 40 square metres and it seems likely that no more than 50 people lived in Skara Brae at any given time.

Coppicing, a traditional forest management method dating back to the Neolithic period, involves periodically cutting trees to the ground level, taking advantage of their ability to resprout. This technique allows for cyclical harvesting of wood, providing a stable supply of firewood. Despite its decline with the advent of fossil fuels, there has been a recent resurgence in coppicing for its benefits to biodiversity and as a sustainable fuelwood source.
