Thomas and Douglas share a common legacy as historic coal mining and lumber towns, both of which reached their zeniths in the first half of the 20th century. The artifacts of area's industrial past, some of which are now being reclaimed by nature, are still evident along Douglas Road, which forks out of Thomas and follows the North Fork of the Blackwater River to Douglas. These include the beehive coke ovens that once lit up the night nonstop to produce coke for local blast furnaces. In addition to the abandoned structures, a number of coal company buildings have been preserved and added to the National Register of Historic Places, including the Davis Coal and Coke Company Administrative Building and the Buxton & Landstreet Company Store, which is now home to the Buxton & Landstreet Gallery and Studios. The area's bittersweet past includes a legacy of human exploitation and racial injustice. Like its brethren, the Davis Coal and Coke Company paid its miners in company scrip that was only redeemable at the company store, which charged inflated prices for goods and ensured it could reclaim their wages at a premium. The area was also home to the Coketown Colored School, a segregated school at the center of an important civil rights victory in 1892, when Carrie Williams, a teacher at the school, teamed with J. R. Clifford, the state’s first African-American lawyer, to defeat an effort by Tucker County to reduce the school’s term. The victory ensured equal pay and terms for African-American schools in West Virginia. The Coketown Colored School closed in 1954 when segregated schools were found unconstitutional.

Exclusive Interview: National Black Theatre's artistic director Jonathan McCrory "we all have the ability to cultivate a renaissance for our own community, for our own people, if we so choose"
For over a decade, Harlem-based artist Jonathan McCrory has served as Executive Artistic Director of the groundbreaking National Black Theatre (NBT), though he prefers the term “creative doula”. The two-time Obie-winner describes his role as enabling “unseen ideas to be birthed between the parents, which are the playwright and the director, or sometimes the playwright and the page”, McCrory…

Revolutionary War Pension Files Seals ✒️🪙📜
Official American 19th century records have fascinating visual features and many remarkable examples of those can be found in the Revolutionary War pension files at the National Archives.
During the conservation stabilization treatment of these records, the conservators come across watermarks, ribbons, wood engraving illustrations, historical repairs, and of course various seals and wafers.
Guest Post by
Paper Conservator (Document Conservation Laboratory, RXC)
Ewa Paul (National Archives)
The term “seal” can be confusing because it refers to both the impression and the device which produces it. Early documents or letters were secured with resinous sealing wax impressed with a stamp seal and were reserved for officials or aristocrats. Later on, in the 19th c., the majority of the literate people used circular paste wafers and paper wafer seals which were much cheaper and easier to use. Wafers are “thin, flat, baked adhesive discs” made of flour paste. They would be moistened on both sides before being pressed to seal a letter or a document. Wafers came in different sizes and colors, and were used as adhesive joints or for affixing paper seals on official documents as shown below.
Tumblr media
The wafer made from red colored paste is underneath the paper seal stuck on top. It is the same seal shown on white and blue wafer paper seal.
Sometimes the wafer paper seals would be made to purposefully emulate the appearance of the older wax / resinous seals as illustrated below (NARA records).
Tumblr media
The paper seals found on the Revolutionary War documents vary in color, style and type and can have eye-catching, intricately carved designs.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
The Revolutionary War pensions records bear many types of seals: hand-written seals, ink printed seals, embossed paper wafer seals and “Scherenschnitte” hand-cut seals.
Tumblr media
The image of the beehive in the inked seal above illustrates the importance of  agriculture, as does the plough in the paper seal below, featured in the Revolutionary War pension file of James Scott, TN.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Hand-cut  Scherenschnitte seals found on the American Revolutionary War pension records. Scherenschnitte paper seals are one of a kind. Scherenschnitte means “scissor cuts” and is a traditional folk-art brought to Pennsylvania in the 18th century by German immigrants.
As other methods of document protection became common, particularly the self-sealing envelope, the use of wafer paper seals declined and by the end of the 19th century the wafers and seals became obsolete.
These days the seals remind us about the importance of privacy and the need to guard our information, and how tricky it must have been to keep things private in the days past.

Bungle Bungle Range, Western Australia: The Bungle Bungle Range is a major landform and the main feature of the Purnululu National Park, situated in the Kimberley region of Western Australia. The distinctive beehive-shaped towers are made up of sandstones and conglomerates (rocks composed mainly of pebbles and boulders and cemented together by finer material). These sedimentary formations were deposited into the Red Basin 375 to 350 million years ago, when active faults altered the landscape. The combined effects of wind from the Tanami Desert and rainfall over millions of years shaped the domes. Wikipedia

"Raiders Of Hives"
Satpura National Park, Madhya Pradesh, India
"In the dense forests of Satpura, a pair of Oriental Honey Buzzards raid a beehive. These raptors hunt for food in beehives and wasp nests but, unlike what their name suggests, they prefer bee and wasp larvae over actual honey."

[A video of the inside of Aotearoa Parliament. Rawiri Waititi, leader of Te Pati Māori, is speaking.
Raiwiri: I see I've got a little bit more time here. This house needs a bit of festive cheer. Okay Mr Speaker?
Speaker Brownlee: It's long been established on this debate that this is what we could expect. [background laughter] Better be good!
Rawiri (singing to the tune of Winter Wonderland):
Mokopuna [1], are you listening?
On your whenua [2], truth is glistening
A terrible fly, our tiriti [3] rights
Marching on stolen Māori land
This year ain't been pretty
Toitū te tiriti [4]

But we know the truth
Marching on stolen Māori land
In the Beehive [6] they can build a front man

He'll say "Will you join me?"
I'll say "no, man!"
Our mokopuna will make a stand
Aotearoa, can you hear me?
The polls are up Te Pati Māori
Tīpuna [8] fed, tiriti led
Marching on stolen Māori land
Marching on stolen Māori land
Okay, finish it off with me!
Marching on stolen Māori land!
[Applause]
Rawiri (spoken): Merry Christmas!]

Sofika Zielyk, a ethnographer and folk artist, is a first-generation American who has maintained her roots to Ukrainian culture. She created The Pysanka: A Symbol of Hope project as a "reminder of resilience, cultural preservation, and the power of art to uplift in times of hardship."
“There's a legend that says as long as people are creating these eggs, the world will continue to exist. And I thought this will be my answer to the aggressor, that we will continue to exist,” Zielyk said.
With this project, Zielyk has used social media to invite and encourage anyone to create their own Pysanky using time-honored patterns and methods. These handmade pieces were then gathered at the Ukrainian Institute of America to form a unified art exhibit and installation that is ever changing as more eggs arrive.
The Pysanka originally symbolized the rebirth of nature after a long winter, with the yolk representing the sun. Through this art installation, the pysanka has been adopted as a powerful emblem of defiance against Russian aggression as well as the rebirth of Ukraine after war.
When asked if this installation will ensure Ukraine's continued existence, Zielyk responded:
"This installation of the pysanky tradition is a metaphor for the Ukrainian people themselves. They and the tradition have gone through wars, serfdom, famines, artificial famines, occupation by other countries, and yet have flourished in spite of all this. Ultimately, it shows the aggressor that we were here in the past, we are here now, and we will continue to be here."
Eventually, all the pysanky donated to the installation will travel to different areas of Ukraine affected by war.
They will be incorporated into the same ancient rituals that our ancestors performed thousands of years ago: put in beehives, buried in the ground, placed on graves of children murdered during the war.  But this time, the rituals will be performed not with the intent of hastening the return of the sun god after winter, but for the rebirth of a nation from the ashes of war.
You can send your empty, traditionally decorated pysanky to:
C/O The Ukrainian Institute of America 2 East 79th Street New York, NY 10075 USA
