"From dusty museums and armories arrived an equestrian sadist from the other side the last surviror of medieval Viking raids bringing haunted art to his heir with a message stamped in paraffin the imperial candle...
With your birthright study this last souvenir and when its time to die once upon the other side feel the knowledge of the elders
That loyalty is a mountain where the departed soar peaks in thin air illuminated by the departure chandelier join the candle's wild dance at the ferry's windy embarkation don't be afraid to leave your possessions behind and i'll be with you"

RGB Villains Headcanons
Tumblr media
CW: Grooming/Child Abuse (For this post, Im using the theory of the Grundel originally being a former child turned into a Grundel for the basic. In my interpretation of this headcanon, he was kidnapped and raised by a Grundel as an apprentice of sorts. There are no graphic or explicit descriptions of the abuse. But some of the headcanons include the aftermath effects of the trauma, so I'm putting this warning here such in case.)
The Grundel
1. How do they feel about people shorter/taller than them? He has an Napoleon complex/inferiority complex when it comes to the other Class VII's. He is the youngest (only have been operating for about 100 years and was trained beforehand by the original Grundel) and is around 6'2 while the rest are, as he puts it, fun size. It doesn't help that Boogey likes to make fun of him and call him nicknames like shorty. He compensates by trying to assert dominance in other ways, such as being aggressive or sly.
2. What are they like on social media? (What’s their username, profile pic, etc.) He would be an internet troll who does stuff for the lols.
3. Their sexuality? N/A (Hasn't thought about it that much)
4. Preferred weather? Rain and foggy weather helps to numb his pains.
5. What’s their sleeping schedule? Zero sleeping schedule. He lays on the floor and tries to go asleep despite his body refusing to at times. He sometimes deals with sleep deprivation and nightmares.
6. Favorite music? Heavy metal and jazz. He enjoys loud music in general. Grundel loves to turn up the volume on his personal Walkman to ignore the others when they're talking too much.
7. How’s their cooking? He doesn't know how to cook and insteads eat sugary junk food like cookies, chocolate, chips, and soda. He has recently grew to enjoy Samhain's cooking (though he started eating it to stop Samhain from worrying too much).
8. It’s movie night, what movie do they pick? Cheesy, horror B-movies like Creature of the Black Lagoon, Plan 9 from Outer Space, and Backet Case. The others complain that they're not even scary (and in Wat's case, not gorey enough), but he doesn't care. He loves them for their unintentional humour, terrible practical effects, and predictability.
9. How would they hold up in a pillow war? He would hold up pretty good on his own. His strategy would be to isolate opponents, using his charm to turn others against each other. When outnumbered, he would try to smooth talk to distract.
10. What’s their sleeping position? Side lying with a pillow between his legs as to alleviate his pain.
11. Who do they go to for comfort? No one. With him being a parastic entity, most ghosts, from Classes I to VI, kept their distance from him, in fear that they could be infected. Despite hanging out with the Class VII's, he doesn't feel comfortable enough to vent to them.
12. Something small that they enjoy? His teddy bear. He can't quite remember where he got it from, but it had always brought him comfort whenever he was chewed out by his former Master.
13. How do they feel about physical contact by others? He hates physical contact, PDA, and anything else like that. He learned to associate toutch with pain and punishment, making him defensive and skittish.
14. What is enough to bring them to tears? Nothing He doesn't cry due to a deep-seated belief that showing emotion is weak.
15. Biggest pet peeve? That some of his victims like Kylie got away. He genuinely does not get why people are disgusted at the thought of becoming a Grundel. His former Master loved to tell him that turning children to Grundels was a 'gift', that they wouldn't have to deal with strict authority figures stifling their true potential.
16. How well do they take care of themselves? Not well. He forgets to eat at times and sometimes refuses to sleep as to not have another nightmare.
17. What’s something they like that may be surprising to others? The other overlords were suprised to see that Grundel loved old, black and white cartoons. Stuff like Micky Mouse, Oswald the Rabbit, and Betty Boop are his personal favorites.
18. Do they consider others family? N/A
19. Any bad habits that they have? He bites his nails, paces when stressed or anxious, and picks at his old scars when he's in deep thought.
20. What’s their idea of a perfect vacation? Anywhere that's stress free and uninhabitable
21. Do they get lost easily? Will they ask for directions if they are? He never gets lost. And even if he did, he wouldn't ask none of the Overlords for help; he's a well-ajusted entity, thank you every much (he isn't).
22. The strangest thing they have ever seen? N/A
23. How well do they accept advice? Not well. He struggles to think that others have his best interests at heart.
24. How much do they swear? He swears a lot. Others like to joke that he swears like a child who just learn new bad words.
25. How do they take advice given to them? He pretends to take advice to avoid conflict or appearing vulnerable to people.
26. Do they like being in pictures? He hates pictures and gets upset when someone tries to take one without asking him first.
27. Is there anything they’re bad at? Blah blah killing the Ghsostbusters, everyone ghost is terrible at that.
28. What’s their morning schedule? His morning routine includes involves checking his surroundings for threats, stretching to alleviate his chronic pain, and mentally preparing for the day.
29. Any past injuries? He has faded scars across his body from his Master when he failed his duties or be disobedient to him. He also suffered from chronic pain in his pelvic and chest from past "punishments". He hides them the best he can.
30. Something that disgusts them? He's disgusted by displays of affection, both physical and emotionally. It was installed into him by the original Grundel to see such acts as weak and manipulative.

Additional Notes
First Impressions: Never knew this guy existed/j
Latest Impressions: "I feel sick." - An actual quote from me after watching the Grundel for the first time.
Favorite Fanfictions Featuring Them: Whispers in the Dark: A fanfiction about Kylie's experiences with the Grundel during her childhood. It is the only fanfiction I was able to find for him, but it's pretty good. The writer did such a good job with replicating how Grundel talks that I was able to like hear the character's voice in my head (but seeing how it's Grundel voice, that's probably not a good thing for me/j). It also has a wholesome ending with Kylie being comforted by Egon and Janine so thats a plus.

Fun Facts
The Grundel is voiced by Rodger Bumpass, well known for playing Squidward Tentacles in Spongebob Squarepants, but also Dr. Membrane in Invader Zim, Doctor Light in Teen Titans, and RGB's Louis Tully.
He was called Grundel Astrala in a draft of the Extreme Ghostbusters episode Grundelesque.
The Grundel was the only the villian from RGB to return in an episode of EG.
He appears in the online Most Wanted missions of Ghostbusters: The Video Game. Except not only really cause it's not him, they just named a completely different monster after him man I really love it when this series does that
He has also made camoes in IDW Ghostbusters comic covers.
Final Verdict: 999/10 (took a point off just cause I can)

Tankiste Operating Outside the Tank
This is an impression of a French tank crewman operating outside their tank. One may see this uniform on tank commanders marching in front of their tank with cane in hand during road marches and on other crew members behind the lines. The marching cane was particularly useful within the Artillerie Spéciale as tank commanders used it to judge the softness of the terrain the tank is moving over. Often one can tell which tankiste was the commander of the crew as they may be walking beside the tank nonchalantly with their marching cane.
Being outside the tank, the tankiste may be seen wearing their 2-liter Bidon Modèle 1877 modifié 1915 (canteen) and Étui-Musette Modèle 1892. Despite being one of the larger examples of a liquid container during the Great War, these canteens would most likely have wine or coffee inside them instead of water as the French struggled with providing clean drinking water to the troops for nearly the entirety of the war. The tankiste per regulation were issued two canteens, though usually only one was worn as pictured with the other stored elsewhere. The secondary canteen may also be in the form of the earlier 1-liter Bidon Modèle 1877. Both canteens would usually have different liquids in them.
The first cloth headgear issued to the tankiste was the standard infantry horizon blue wool Bonnet de Police Modèle 1918 service cap with its Napoleonic style of two tall peaks on each end. When performing vehicle maintenance, this service cap would sometimes fall off the head and get stuck in the small confines of the tank, becoming visibly dirty. Because of this, tankiste would purchase black civilian Basque style berets to replace their service cap, becoming commonplace by 1917. The berets seen being worn by the tankiste were all civilian berets purchased by the tankiste themselves and were not regulatory, varying in size and style. The black beret was well liked among the crews as it fit snugly on the head and would not fall off while inside the tank. Just to be safe many of the tankiste would wear the beret in an interesting fashion - centered and pushed snug down over the head to ensure it would not fall off. Wearing the beret like this appears to be some sort of inside fashion joke among Veteran tank crews, as this method of wearing the beret would continue after the war despite proper beret wearing regulations in place by then. Like the black leather coat, the black beret was chosen as it masked any vehicle oil stains the beret may collect when in use.
The beret would soon be adorned with various metallic or embroidered insignias such as rank stripes, badges, playing card symbols, and other miscellaneous AS pins. In the case of the tankiste here, he wears an NCO version of the original insignia of the Artillerie Spéciale, depicting a mythical fire breathing salamander. The NCO versions were in silver while the Officer versions were in gold. While not technically within regulation, the wearing of such insignias and unit markings was ignored by the AS administration as it promoted esprit de corps. The black leather coat was not immune to this adorning of insignia, and we can see here that a private purchase Renault FT pin has been placed on the left breast of the coat. Like the AS specialist insignia tab on the tunic, this pin is intended to show others that the wearer was a tank crewman when wearing the coat. This was less common to see but many of the enthusiastic and eager fighters within the AS would sport pins like these. Unlike the French infantry which were characterized as the rugged and reluctant warfighter Poilu, the tankiste remained in a high morale and eager to fight state throughout their service during the war - a side effect of incorporating many officers who previously served within other 'proudly elite' units like the cavalry.
Additionally we see a closer view of the regimental collar tabs and left arm service and insignia tabs. The buttons on the Vareuse Modèle 1915 were of course standard artillery buttons with a flaming bomb over two crossed cannons.

For the asks, 4, 22 and 27
4. mythical creature you think/believe is real
I do think there's got to be some kind of life on other planets. I mean, the Drake equation does make it seem possible. Now, do I think Little Gray Men (or White People from Space) have come to visit? Not really. I'm extremely skeptical (though I do love a good "real abduction" story).
I'm still holding out hope that Bigfoot/Sasquatch is real. I mean, there are all these stories from Native and First Nations traditions that match current pop-culture concepts of Bigfoot. Like, there's something that matches here and I'm curious as to what it might be. After all, it turned out the moai on Easter Island really did walk to their places, and indigenous people in North America learned how to make maple syrup from squirrels, as they always said. It's us white people who keep doubting people who actually know the truth.
I'd also really like unicorns and winged unicorns to be real, but that's because I am still a 6 year-old girl on the inside.
And I guess "fairies stand to reason."
20. favorite disney pricness movie?
Wait, princess movie? Oh man, um, okay... Uh...
Does Aladdin count? I know Aladdin himself is the main character, but Jasmine is a princess and she's pretty cool (and has a pet tiger). I saw that movie so many times on VHS that I could just about recite it from beginning to end lol.
Oh, sweet, I just looked up what the "Disney Princess" product line is and "[t]he franchise does not include all princess characters from the whole of Disney-owned media, but rather refers to select specific characters from the company's animated films, including in the franchise protagonists of animated films from Walt Disney Pictures, with eleven characters from the Walt Disney Animation Studios films, and one character from a Pixar film. The 12 characters in the franchise are Snow White, Cinderella, Aurora, Ariel, Belle, Jasmine, Pocahontas, Mulan, Tiana, Rapunzel, Merida, and Moana."
So I'm going with Jasmine here.
Now if I can stretch the definition, Princess Leia Organa. Since Gisnep is like the Napoleon of corporations, taking over everything, and now owns Star Wars, and Leia is a Star Wars and is also a princess, she is therefore a Disney Princess. QED.
27. what's your favorite go-to outfit?
Garth from Wayne's World: jeans, Chucks (mine are low-tops), random graphic t-shirt, flannel shirt over it, black-frame glasses, awful hair.
Do I like it? Not really. Am I stuck with it? Pretty much.
Oh wait, that says "favorite." Okay, okay, so that's just my "default" outfit because I apparently hate myself. But my actual favorite that could be a go-to is...black skirt, black footless tights, black-and-white striped knit shirt, black cardigan, black flats. I like to think I look a bit like a Beatnik chick and/or French. All I need is a beret. And a cigarette. I've got the world-weariness and the ennui down.
Weirdly specific and unrelated asks...
ADDENDUM because I goofed:
22. do you have an emotional support water bottle?
I think I kind of do? Or I used to, at least. Working at the library, it was pretty much standard practice to have a water bottle with you at all times and in all places. I had a blue metal one that I liked...well enough, except that I had to hold it up in front of my face to drink from it and that got old.
One of my colleagues, though, had a nifty Contigo bottle that had, like, a built-in straw to the thing. So you just flipped the mouthpiece up and, boom, like drinking with a straw. Now I won’t feel like I’m tippling the last drops out of the whiskey bottle anymore, hooray! So I got my own--in black and gray for some reason. In retrospect, I should’ve chosen blue or something.
Anyway, the new one also had a nice loop for my fingies, which the blue one did not (shamefully). And I hauled that thing everywhere with me for a long time. And it was cool when they put in those water bottle-filler things on the water fountains at a new library building--one I happened to be working in.
Now that I’m not really...working...anywhere, I’m not using it as much (if at all) anymore. But, yeah, my boy Contigo there with the plastic straw format.

Ikemen Vampire and their Godly parents
Inspired by Percy Jackson.
Mozart: Apollo
Son of the God of light, of sun, of music, of truth, of poetry, and arts. May not be a leader but set trends. I will start with the most obvious fact and that is Mozart’s talent for music, as all of us know Apollo’s children are exceptional for the arts in general. Mozart is not someone that tends to laugh frequently but as a good children of Apollo, you can hear the sound of what it could be beautiful Bells when he does, and a smile as warm as the sun. Because of his prolonged time on practicing he sometimes has little to none sunlight, that makes him really moody (more than he already is) so taking some walks or playing with Schelm in the garden are necessary for his health even if he claims to not need it.
Not all of Apollo’s children are blond, some of them have physical traits that are related to the sun such as freckles, warm skin subtones, and even if their hair is black if you see it in the sun light you can see a golden or brownish reflection on their hair, in Mozart’s case if we see carefully there’s also warm subtones such as beige, and pink :
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
While other white haired characters have cold undertones like blue:
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
Because of Mozart’s incredible fair skin it’s easy for him to get freckles. Apollo’s children are lie detectors, as they say, you cannot cover the sun with your thumb, Mozart knows from miles away when someone is lying.
Apollo’s children are scary when they get mad, be aware of what they could do when they lose control, just like Mozart, it may seem like he’s always angry but he actually isn’t, when he’s angry you will know.
Apollo’s kids are naturally over dramatic, they turn everything into inspiration for music, plays, etc. remember that time when Mozart said that dry things like cookies are his “worst enemy”? Just because Marie Antoinette gave him a bunch of them, he didn’t know what to do and decided it was a good idea to stuff everything in his mouth...
Tumblr media Tumblr media
To what MC finished laughing because ... bruh 😂
Isaac: Athena
Goddess of wisdom, handicraft, knowledge and warfare. Children of Athena are gifted with a sharp and brilliant mind. Do I have to say more ? Isaac is a genius, he has an incredible hunger for knowledge, and curiosity that makes him discover the most incredible things in this world. Children of Athena enjoy reading a good book and most of the time you can see them lost in their thoughts.
We know that Athena’s children can be street smart and book smart, the majority likes to be street smart since they already have a facility to keep info from books, but in the case of our apple boy he’s chosen to be book smart, this kind of children tend to have difficulties to relate to others and create deep bonds since their brilliant minds make them feel detached from the world that surrounds them.
Napoleon : Zeus
Charismatic
Natural leaders
Children of Zeus are the leaders struggling with the pressure of being leaders. Since they are such a reliable people, their friends usually seek for them when they need help, maybe they are not as wise as a child of Athena, but their empathy makes them good advisers too. They’re strong and resilient.
Serious but yet humorous
Assertive
Children of Zeus are prideful, they like to tease others but when the tables turn they don’t really know how to react (not like they are doormats but more like in a teasing way something like pikachu face: “you ... you just teased the son of the lightening.. right in front of my salad” that kind of reaction. It’s actually kind of cute 😂
They can be flighty or warm, depends of the person they are dealing with and their mood.
Physically traits could be grey, blue or in some cases green eyes. Children of Zeus usually have gray hairs since a young age.
Arthur: Dionysus
God of wine, madness, ecstasy and theatre
Children of Dionysus are sociable, charismatic and the life of the party. The ones with all the connections. They’re the friend that everyone references when they say ‘I know a guy’ and we all know that Arthur knows or at least recognizes a lot of faces in Paris.
Children of Dionysus are not only party people, they are really clever too, people usually don’t give them credit for how smart they really are, but they prefer to keep that intelligence hidden ‘cause they don’t want to intimidate anyone, after all the party needs to continue !
They are the ones you can always count on to have a good time. The best telling jokes and reading the atmosphere of a room. they are the ones you call when you’re upset and just want to forget about reality for a night.
Stubborn, determined and chaotic nature.
Most of Dionysus children are empaths, that’s how they can feel the mood so well and make everyone have a good time, nevertheless if they don’t have a control over this ability it can be bad for their health, appropriating other people's problems or feeling guilty if they cannot help their friends as a good “host” would do.
Another thing, Arthur really seems to enjoy alcoholic beverages such as beer, wine, etc. besides coffee.
Talking about physical traits Dionysus children rock semi long hair, this chill and laid back appearance is the signature of the god of party and wine. Even when they wear formal clothes you can see this relaxed look on them.
I remember one time I read a post where it said that Dionysus children often have the nicest shoes in the room (idk why? 😂) BUT DUDE that’s true, there was also other post where you guys were talking about who had the best taste in shoes and guess who was one of the best fashionistas 👌👌😂
Also, olive undertones, in hair, skin, etc. if we see Arthur’s hair for example, sometimes it doesn’t appear to be entirely blue, it also has olive undertones:
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
Jean: Hades
God of the underworld
Talking about children of hades we can see that they are not only the “quiet ones” but also people with a sharp intuition. They observe everything and everyone, quietly. Tend to hold grudges and feel out of place, they stay a lot of time inside their heads and because of this children of hades usually have a hard time finding their “meaning in life” or “their place in this world”. Since they are deep they have a difficult time relating to others, meanwhile everyone is talking about the trends of the year, children of Hades are in other Chanel .
They like to be by their own, or maybe with someone that actually understands them.
I think most of the time people only focus on their “dark personality” and forget to appreciate other traits like the incredible willpower that they have to achieve anything that attracts their attention.
Physically talking, as we all know, children of Hades have dark tones in their hair, eyes and skin tone. There’s something cold in their appearance that makes them look intimidating and mysterious
Vincent : Apollo
Do I really need to explain this one ? 😂😂
I will just cover some facts that relate to Apollo’s children since Vincent is like the PERFECT example of what is being an Apollo’s child.
I think Vincent has a BIG potential to learn any instrument that he likes, also archery but I doubt it since he wouldn’t like to hurt anyone.
Is easy for Children of Apollo to tan, just imagine our angel with a beautiful sexy tan 🙌🏻😫✨
EMBODIMENT OF LIGHT
also, Apollo’s children are healers, and Vincent wants not only to help but if possible heal everyone’s suffer, as we can see in his route, he wants to help MC with her anxiety to return to her time nevertheless he’s never too pushy and waits until MC feels prepared to open up to him.
Apollo’s children are people pleasers, in a mini drama, Vicent tells Leonardo that if there was a girl in the mansion he wouldn’t know how to behave, since he only wants to give a good impression.
Leonardo : Hephaestus
Children of Hephaestus , Their minds are constantly working on something and their ideas running wild.
They have SO many ideas that they have dozens of project running AT THE SAME TIME, they can even compete with children of Athena.
Some of this children may not be geniuses but out of their curiosity and hunger for knowledge is because they can become worthy opponents to the other god or goddesses children.
Masters on none, but master of many.
They also got that freaking cheeky smile of their father.
Intelligent, good looking and good jokes.
Physically talking children of Hephaestus have strength in their upper body, just like their father, they have enough strength in their hands, arms and back to carry or forge any metal and turn it into a weapon (or any creation but you get me) what usually makes them have (on males) big shoulders or backs and in females, they have shorter but stronger fingers.
Comte : Aphrodite
Who was the one that fell in love in the middle of war ????
YUP this guy ☝️
Children of Aphrodite are hopeless romantic, they find beauty and love in the darkest places and times. They are the ones that you go for advice (not the kind of advice you would go to Athena, but one that helps your heart to find a solution).
They like luxury and aesthetic stuff, Comte with all the money that he has could be living his life like Leo, relaxing, giving little attention to appearances, etc. BUT NO
DADDY COMTE NEEDS TO WEAR HIS DIOR PAJAMAS AND RELAX IN A ROMAN BATH THANK YOU. It’s not like he’s superficial, but he just likes to pamper himself.
Children of Aphrodite have charm speak, Idk you but every time Comte speaks is like velvet for my ears. Most of the time people only see Aphrodite’s children as superficial, not so intelligent and unnecessary at battle but they are dead wrong, actually they are really observant and can be manipulative since they understand and almost feel others people emotions and intentions.
Even though their mother is the Goddess of Love, they can hide their emotions pretty well
It is known that Aphrodite’s children can speak fluently French and Oh look at that Comte is French, coincidence ? I DONT THINK SO.
Theo: Ares
God of war
Children of Ares are topically seen as this really short-tempered guy /girl but there’s more about them. I’m gonna start with the basic personality traits, Children of Ares are stubborn as hell, does it reminds you of Theo ? 😅 they are also really protective of those they love, it may not appear like it but they don’t like injustice, so when they see someone that’s being a jerk they fight with everything they got, sometimes they exaggerate tho.
HATES GOSSIP they like to say thing straight to the point and don’t have filter, sometimes they may seem rude but they are just saying the truth
Doesn’t take shit from anyone
Determinant and never gives up, they also give (its rare but they do) advices when they see you really struggling with something, an example of this could be when (in Leo’s route) MC had a hard time deciding what to choose between staying in 19th century France or coming back to her time with Leo, to what Theo noticed her struggling and gave her a brief but nice advice.
HARD ON THE OUTSIDE SOFT ON THE INSIDE
Children of Ares are aware that they intimidate their siblings, that’s why they become silent and prefer to stay in their cabin, but if you want them to open up to you, a nice smile and kind personality would be a great combo to go with them.
Children of Ares are really intelligent, after all their father is also a strategist.
Shakespeare: Hades
Again ... do I have to explain this one ? 😂
Shakespeare is deep af. Children of Hades see the deepest and darkest things in life, that’s why they tend to feel depressed, but because of that they also can see the brightest parts. This contrast usually is embodied in an artistic way, it may be in plays, dancing, singing, stories, etc.
The goth friend
Children of Hades are one of the kindest siblings among all God and Goddesses out there since they know what loneliness feels like.
guess who feels like that ? YUP Will does
they like to be alone but not lonely.
Dazai: Dionysus
Dionysus was known to be a Reckless, crazy god that resembled freedom and fun. Children of Dionysus are usually found smiling for ... no specific reason, some could say is even scary or suspicious, like if they were drunk 😅.
Dionysus has parties where everyone dances and can fall into madness and ecstasy. Dazai is a sensual man, he has this aura that is just so appealing and comfortable to be with, but he is still a mystery, just like his father. Dyonisus was a god that usually doesn’t get in other’s people problems but it is known that he has a lot of powers, and the majority remains a mystery to humans.
Dazai is someone that craves to feel and be loved, but is scared to be rejected for who he really is, instead of that he prefers to show the “clown facade” that everyone likes, after all is easier to have “company” in a party full of people that you don’t know but they don’t really care about you than opening up to someone and being vulnerable.
People usually describe children of Dionysus as “crazy”
They are normally underestimated, but they have an incredible ability for the arts, they create the most crazy yet deep monologues.
These people tend to get obsessed over things they like, this is somewhat bad for them since they can get addicted to things like alcohol, tobacco, etc.
Talking about physical traits, Dazai is like the perfect definition of a Dionysus child, chill appearance, medium long hair, PURPLE HAIR, likes (maybe a little too much) alcohol, smooth voice.
Tumblr media
Sebastian : Demeter
Goddess of agriculture, fertility, nature, and seasons.
Children of Deméter have this motherly figure in their group of friends.
Natural protectors.
Great cooks
They can be really strict at scolding their friends, family etc. but they just want the best for their loved ones.
Children of Deméter aren’t really aggressive, but don’t get in their wrong side which would be trying to hurt their family, because they go havoc.
They have an amazing intuition, just like a good mother.
Their personalities are calm and collected, they may panic on the inside when something bad happens but never let it show.
Deméter children are so aware of the details they are the ones that give the best gifts since they know deeply their loved ones, what they like and what they don’t, again, like a good mother.
Faust: Hecate
Goddess of magic, witchcraft, ghosts, necromancy and crossroads.
Children of Hecate are really intelligent and have an amazing memory, after all they have to memorize dozens of spells.
They usually have lots of books, since they have to know the functionality and sources of the magic they are using.
CU RI O US
They may appear frightening since they face and aesthetic aren’t really welcoming sometimes, but they are actually pretty nice.
SNAKE PERSONALITY
cunning and ambitious
Children of Hecate know how to handle necromancy, which makes them closer to death, that’s why talking about this kind of topics doesn’t scare them.
Children of Hecate can be obsessive, they can stay all day and all night practicing their witchcraft, PLS SOMEONE TAKE THEM OUT OF THEIR ROOM.
They have a different type of aesthetic, maybe is not totally GOTH but there’s something religious or spiritual there, they believe that there is a superior power in the world.
Incredibly good teachers. They may not be as charismatic as Apollo kids, but they are patient and good listeners.
Calm but can be sadists too so be careful.
Vlad : Nemesis
Children of Nemesis, as their mother, tend to hold grudges and is really difficult for them to forget those who wrong them.
They can go ExTrEMe lengths in their revenge, elaborate plans that doesn’t matter how much time they take, they will do it.
Maybe scarier than Children of Ares.
Yandere personality who ?
They are really observant and intelligent, they have the ability to find Achilles ankle of any of their enemies.
Manipulative, that gives them the ability to awake rage on the ones they want like allies.
Curiously children of Nemesis have a strong sense of justice and balance, and they will do anything to carry on with their ideals, even if that means taking extreme measures.
Physically talking there’s always red on them, and I’m talking about red hair, liking for red color, and oh ! Look at that, who has red eyes ??
Charles : Tyche
Goddess of chance, fate and fortune.
I really had a hard time deciding for this one, and I don’t know a lot about him but from what I’ve seen I can say he’s a Tyche’s child.
Children of Tyche are extremely friendly and enthusiastic.
J O K E S
very hyperactive
Smarter than they look, observant and empaths, also they like to prank people like a pixie would do.
Pretty smiles, and they giggle like a lot.
Usually green eyes.
Obviously they like to gamble or if the other participants doesn’t like to, Children of Tyche conform with just playing
They love nature and animals.
A kid in an adult body
Don’t let their cute smiles, dimples or freckles fool you, they can be manipulative.
Idk why but I imagine Tyche kids with fairy like features, maybe that’s why lots of them have a short height.

What do you think each of the suitors smell like?
Thank you for requesting. I honestly never thought about what they would smell like until now so this was pretty cool for me. Please enjoy. (I hit the 10 photo limit😭 I couldn’t put all the boy’s picture day photos.😢) such a tragedy.
Mozart
Lavender, the subtle cleanliness of soap, and a touch of something bitter sweet.
Mozart’s scent is calming, almost like a cold room or freshly cleaned linen. His natural perfume draws you in, making you crave more with each deep, slow breath. There is always a tart sweetness on his tongue. It reminds those who smell it of dark chocolate and expensive desserts.
Tumblr media
Napoleon
Cedar wood, the musk of horse hair, and a gentle vanilla.
There is a matureness in his scent- a gift of the cedar which had followed him around since he was a small boy running through the worn-down trails of his homeland. The horse hair is a result of spoiling his noble stead with bareback canters through the woods as Napoleon’s unrestrained laughs bounced off the leaves, echoing along the large branches the bonded pair cleared. The delicate vanilla, though very different from the other layers of his scent, resembles that of the crepes Napoleon adores and eats almost religiously.
Tumblr media
Jean
Frost, dew, and ice on a pure body of water.
Jean’s scent is sharp, almost a pure smell that makes you shiver with pleasure. Frost from the earth on a cold morning follows his form like a phantom figure. The fresh smell of dew coated leaves is ingrained in his pale flesh. Like ice along a lake, Jean’s scent spreads along any surface, overtaking and conquering, leaving a trace of his existence.
Tumblr media
Isaac
Spice, cedar wood, and nickel.
There’s a hint of spice in his scent. It is close to cinnamon, but different enough to where your mind runs with the possibilities of other deductions. Isaac isn’t too sure where the cedar originated from, he deduced it was either from his days spent with Napoleon, or a result of the constant tinkering with the large Leonardo on new inventions. The metallic scent of nickel follows the flustered physicist around like a puff of smoke. Some would think the smell seeps from the blush constantly staining his cheeks, but the sad truth is the fragrance is a result of his weakness towards the sticky, red liquid dubbed rogue. The poor male is clumsy and enervated by blood, so much so he often spills the fluid, causing it to dribble down his chin and soil his clothes.
Tumblr media
Vincent
Linseed oil, flowers on a warm sunny day, turpentine, and a hint of Theo.
Vincent’s scent is warm, invigorating, and intense. When kissing his cheek a subtle scent of linseed oil wafts up your nose. Vincent has tried to wash the smell off but it seems to be engraved in his flesh- a result from paint being continuously spread along his skin. He soon gave up. Now the scent is almost a comforting reminder of his passions. The mental image of sunflowers blowing in a warm breeze on a sunny day comes to mind when Vincent walks past. The earthy scent is probably why he is usually compared to a sunflower. The chemical sharpness of turpentine appears every so often on his clothes due to the unfocused movements of his hand knocking over the toxic substance. The strong scent of Theo can be smelt on Vincent’s sleeves or scarf before the cloth is washed.
Tumblr media
Theo
Whiskey, the slightest touch of king, sweet syrup on his tongue.
Theo’s aroma is strong, demanding, and hard to forget. Like his personality, there is layers upon layers when it comes to his fragrance; the most apparent being the whiskey he drinks with Arthur on hard days. Woody, and pleasant with a touch of aldehydes that makes Theo smell like he ran through a field of grain. The familiar scent of King follows the whiskey perfume reminding Theo of laughter filled moments with his beloved partner when he catches a whiff on his clothing. Sweet syrup floats from his mouth each time words roll from his tongue. Its almost impossible to breath in Theo’s words without becoming ravenous for sugary foods.
Tumblr media
Sebastian
Zesty lemon, comforting cleaning solutions, rosemary, mint, and a warm meal.
The tang of cleaning solutions follows the butler through the halls. The scent noticeable enough to know he uses disinfecting products often, but not so overwhelming that it makes your nose crinkle. His skin smells as if he uses a bar of soap made with baked goods and a lemon. His hair is coated with the fresh scent of rosemary and mint. He smells like a warm meal surrounded by the comforting glow of candles. Sebastian smells like home.
Tumblr media
Arthur
Fudge, a gentle kiss of Vic, cheap perfume, pine needles, and coffee.
The strong scent of black coffee is always on his skin like the deep fragrance of fudge on his lips. It is a wonderful blend truly. The warming smell of his beloved Vic, the slightest touch of cheap perfume, and pine needles accompany the delicious mix of edibles. Arthur smells like a man sitting on a leather recliner, a book in his hands, his lips sipping at a steaming mug of black coffee, a fire roaring in the chimney as his trusted dog sleeps at his worn, sock covered feet.
Tumblr media
Dazai
Rain, cherry blossoms, the chilly night air.
The writer smells like the air on a chilly night, silencing, soothing, and depressing, immediately bring to mind a dark sky filled with stars and a bright shining moon. The scent of freshly fallen rain stains his hair as the relaxing aroma of cherry blossoms drift around his form like a delicate breeze. Dazai smells like loneliness and relaxation.
Comte
Spiciness of black tea, eucalyptus, fresh linen, and tobacco.
Comte’s odor is hard to miss. It has a spice in the scent that tickles at your nose, resembling that of black tea. There is also a calming softness of eucalyptus that pairs perfectly with the sharp spice of the tea. Though Comte does not smoke, tobacco seems to be engrained into the fibers of his clothes which in-turn caused the pureblood to ask his butler to use a stronger deodorizer on his expensive silks. Sebastian had tried his hardest but the only fruits of his efforts were a wonderful mix of the tobacco and fresh linen scent. It’s not as if Comte dislikes the scent, he finds the scent of tobacco rather calming- he just honestly didn’t wish to hear the gloating of his fellow pureblood.
Tumblr media
Leonardo
Natural male musk, the sweetness of cigarillos, leather, and a hint of something metallic.
Leonardo’s smell is that of a confident man- strong, demanding, and addictive. The roughness of natural male musk on his skin is far from overwhelming, comforting is what it truly is. The addictive sweetness of his cigarillos imprinted in his clothes makes you remember a time of your grandfather telling war stories on the porch as he released puffs of smoke from his lips, even if you hadn’t had the memory. Leather and the sharp hint of something metallic stains his fingers. Leonardo smells like asylum.
Tumblr media
Shakespeare
Coconut, tea, worn clothes, and musk.
The scent of coconut is barely noticeable on the famed playwright. The only time it is smelt is when he reaches up to place a lock of hair behind your ear, or when he leans in to place a kiss upon your cheek in greetings. The aroma of old clothes and the slight dampness pierces his skin, as well as the sweet, floral tea on his lips. Shakespeare’s smell isn’t unpleasant, far from it in fact. His scent is comforting, relaxing, and able to force anyone who walks past to miss a home they never had. His smell smells like nostalgia

Sunday Night Headcanon
Feat: French Revolution Navy Captain!Bucky and Ambassador!Steve, who are given a... gift from a neighboring colony
---
Bucky is the captain of a frigate, a colonizing war-ship sent by Napoleon to the Eastern European islands, landing in Corsica, which is occupied by France in 1804, the year Napoleon becomes Emperor. Bucky doesn’t love Napoleon— most of his family is dead because of the revolution and the Emperor’s consequential reign— but sees this as a way to escape the chaos in Paris.
He travels south from the capital, heading for Marseille's Vieux-Port, leading a company of 30 men— small for what Bucky is used to, sometimes leading fleets of up to 200 into battle.
They set sail across the Mediterranean, stealthy and with the goal of seeing ambassador Steven Rogers (Bucky’s closest friend and brother during the revolution) to the local government in Corsica.
The people hate them. Steven speaks French and Italian, as does Bucky, but when they arrive, Lord Alexander won’t communicate or let them interact with farmers and villagers. They aren’t given an invitation to stay on the island, so Bucky ends up forcing the lord to comply with the French Government on threat of the crown.
Lord Alexander apologizes, but Bucky and Steven demand amends be made as a symbol of Corsica’s submission to Napoleon.
They are presented with the keys to an underwater dungeon, and told that an immeasurable gift for the Emperor lies waiting for them.
It’s a short trip around the shoreline to where the dungeon is— built into a cave, and surrounded by lowering rock formations. Bucky has half of his crew stand guard, watching for a trap. He waits with them as Steven inspects the “gift.”
Within minutes Steven is back— pale and out of breath— shouting for Bucky to join him. Bucky climbs down the rock, into the mouth of the cave, and sees Steven kneeling inside a large cage. Beyond the steel bars, there’s a small reflecting pool, deep enough to stretch down several yards, although blocked from passage through by the metal cage.
Steven waves him over, signaling to keep quiet, and the two of them peer down into the water. The reflecting sunlight catches a glint of scales, deep in the water, and Bucky inhales sharply. Whatever he was expecting to find, it was definitely not this.
It’s a boy. Definitely younger than Bucky was when he was promoted to Captain a few years ago. His hallow face with exquisitely fine bone structure is framed by dark, inky waves of hair, emphasizing thin and pale features. Prominent collarbones, countable ribs, emaciated stomach are all visible, leading down to—
“S-steven... what is it?”
Steven just shakes his head, speechless. Each of the small creature’s fingers are hooked together, webbed, with sharp black talons to match. His skin glows gold, shimmering in the low light, just like his... tail. And Bucky is having trouble believing it himself. Long and winding and oh so mesmerizing, the creature’s tail gently sways back and forth, keeping him pinned against the lower section of the isolated pool.
For this creature— this... mer-person— there’s absolutely no escape. If this is the gift that Lord Alexander intends them to bestow on the emperor, he will be sorely disappointed, but Bucky...
Bucky sees the fear in this boy’s eyes. He sees the starvation and the shaking, torturous symptoms that him and Steven are all too familiar with. And he knows Steven is thinking the same thing.
“We have to rescue him, Captain.”
Bucky huffs, holding up the keys and giving them a light shake—
“I think we already have.”
(Okay, in my head I couldn’t decide between Tony and Peter, so it could be either.)
- I picture Steven being an idiot and diving into the pool, trying to rescue the poor boy, but getting attacked
- Bucky has to save both of them, and ends up pulling the boy onto the surface, surprised to see the scales and fins and gills disappear as he leaves the water
- They bundle him up and carry him back and tend to him and realize he only speaks Italian. They refuse to bring him to the emperor, but he refuses to go back to his people
- Maybe they all go off and become pirates together idk, but definitely either Winteriron or WinterSpider endgame

La Comtesse Chronicles Chapter 1 Part 1
Tumblr media
Art by @nae812
1406 words
TW: Blood, graphic violence, death CW: attempted assassination, war, vampires
R: In another world, war was a constant. Though it was the late 1890s, peace had yet to reach the people of Europe. Many said it was the fault of the various kings and nobles that squabbled over land. Others feared it was a darkness that had cursed the land, to forever be in the midst of battle, to feed the blood hungry grounds. In truth, there were shadows operating to take control of things. Shadows that had no name to normal people. Yet to one, these shadows were a very real thorn in her side. La Comtesse, Rosaline Arcanum, pure blood vampire, ancient in age, mysterious in vision, lived to keep such shadows at bay. Her home lay at the edge of Paris. An expansive castle, it housed men from history who had been brought back to help save humanity from itself.
Inside, a normal morning started, the men all sitting around the dining room table being served by Sebastian the butler. Notably, one was absent from the table: La Comtesse herself.
"Sir Leonardo, have you seen la Comtesse, this morning? She had urgent mail delivered about an hour ago."
"No, afraid not, Sebastian. Check her training room after breakfast?" He suggested with a smooth smile.
.......
Techno blared, she floated mid-air, teacups circling her. Her hair looked as if it were under water, an eerie light running across the whitish silver threads that were her hair. Eyes closed, the cups drifted around her lazily, smoothly as if set adrift down a slow river.
A knock unheard, again and again till the door opened. "M. la Comtesse, pardon me. You have urgent mail."
Lavender eyes opened, the cups drifting over to make a neat pile on the dresser. "Good morning Sebastian." She stated before flicking her wrist and the music shut off. "What kind of urgent message?"
"A request for military support from France."
A sigh, the only sound in the room before the click of shoes landing on the tile. Coat fluttered behind her as she walked past him to her study. He followed, moving quickly to catch up. "M. la Comtesse, there are also several letters from potential suitors. Perhaps you could consider one of them while you prepare for things?"
Another loud sigh. "How many times do I need to tell you to give up on finding me a partner? Love with me is something that will only prove fatal. A poison, sweet at first, but a quick ticket to an early grave."
Heart clenched, she went on like this every time he mentioned finding someone. "I won't give up on your happiness, M. la Comtesse. You shouldn't either."
Lavender glanced back at him before a self-deprecating laugh left her. "Do as you wish. It won't change the reality of the situation. My heart is and always will be cold and dead to that world. Now, hot chocolate please while I answer these."
"Of course, Comtesse." He quickened his pace back to the kitchen to meet her request.
Her answer to help aid France in battle was an affirmative, while it was a polite decline to the letters from suitors. They all meant well, but she would be the death of them should she ever give in and try to love one of them. She couldn't, wouldn't, let another man die the same way her first husband had, even though his trying to leave her had been what triggered the tragic events of that day
.......
That afternoon, lunch, the dining room was full again. The chatter was lively, but it died down as the click of fine shoes approached.
"We are off to war again in two days. Jean, Napoleon, you will come with me. The rest of you will stay here and guard Paris should something happen."
Jean and Napoleon glanced at one another before they nodded in affirmation. Joining la Comtesse on the field was a rare treat, as it was there, and only there, that she let loose with her powers. "It would be an honor, Comtesse." Jean spoke with reverence.
"Good. Training for both of you with me after lunch and then we leave for the front." She sat down, smiling her usual contented smile.
.......
Lunch passed quickly that afternoon. Outside, Jean and Napoleon waited for la Comtesse to show up. At last footsteps sounded in the soft earth. "Sorry to keep you both waiting. I had another urgent message. The sender likely won't be as happy as the one made the King of France this morning. Now, let us begin, shall we?"
Both nodded before she began to speak again. “Jean, go ahead and change to your metal form. Fly around and let's see if you can hit some targets. Napoleon, your job is to make the projectiles that Jean makes heated. I suggest that you set his metal wings on fire. You won’t hurt him while he’s in his metal form, so worry not. I’ll be supervising and making sure neither of you get hurt.”
Jean concentrated and turned into an obsidian metal man with large jet black angel wings. Taking flight, he circled above like a vulture looking down at its prey. Napoleon looked at Rosaline before concentrating and flames erupted over Jean. Soon he glowed red hot. “Fire!” La Comtesse yelled. Hot metal feathers rained down on the field, la Comtesse deflecting them to the desired spots. She signaled them both to stop and Jean came down.
“Bravo, gentlemen. Stick to this sort of tactic on the battlefield and you will have no problems. If either of you need help just shout and I’ll hear you, regardless of where you are. I have no doubts that our campaign will be successful. Napoleon, till we depart, do your best to practice controlling your powers. Jean has much more experience than you in this regard. Also, given that this will be your first battle with me, I suggest that you stay near me in case something happens. Napoleon, I also have armor for you to wear, so please try it on.”
……
That evening, la Comtesse descended the stairs, sword in hand, her battle outfit on. “Gentlemen, are you ready?” Her words were greeted by widened eyes. A confident smile from one, a reverent gaze from the other.
“Ready, my Lady.” Napoleon cleared his throat and nodded, signaling he was ready.. Jean bowed his head, staying silent and followed.
…….
“Charge!” The commander of the French army yelled. Lines of soldiers took off running, as did the cavalry. Rosaline, Napoleon and Jean all took off running with them, but they stayed in the front of the soldiers. Soon the sounds of metal hitting metal rang out, the metallic and acrid smell of blood in the air. Men screaming and the smell of death soon took over.
“Jean, go!” Rosaline ordered. Jean turned black and beat his wings to take off. “Napoleon, focus on the oncoming soldiers here on the left, and aid Jean. I have the soldiers on the right.”
“As you wish, my lady.” Napoleon focused and fire began to surround him. His sword caught fire and he charged into the oncoming soldiers. Soldiers who caught sight of him turned and ran, others shouted things like “monster” and tried to take him down. Both did not survive the heat that Napoleon spewed out over the battlefield.
Comtesse truly let loose at times like this. Swords, rocks, cannon balls, you name it, she moved it and made it a high-speed projectile. The few that made it through this barrage were taken down by her sword, or driven mad by the things she placed in their minds. Some even began to attack their fellow soldiers. Had any of them realized she was causing this, they would have run for their lives, not that it would have made much of a difference.
The German commander watched the battle in shock and awe. He had heard the French were formidable, but this was far worse than the rumors than he had heard. It was as if God himself was backing their army. Then there was something in the sky that was raining down death, something he had no explanation for. The one thing that he could say though: the legends were true. Anyone who had the backing of Comtesse Arcanum, would win a battle. A sigh left him before he started working on a retreat strategy, or a surrender.

First, thank you SO MUCH for all the fic recs you’ve been blessing us with! I really appreciate all the time and effort you’ve put into making these. Second, could you recommend some historical AUs? Thank you and I hope you have a lovely day :D
Thank you so much for the kind words anon. It’s so good to hear that you guys like these recs. I really enjoy creating these lists and finding fics that are both well-loved but also those who are underrated in the fandom.
I have a LOT of historical AU fics so I hope there are some you haven’t read before. The fics are, more or less, in chronological order, so it starts with Ancient Rome, moves on to the Middle Ages, then to Regency era, etc. etc. This should make it a tad easier to find fics from different eras. Enjoy!

But when he captures a thrall of his own, a young witch who gives his name only as Charles, he discovers that there is a darker magic than his at work - and the fate of the known world may rest in his hands.
More Than All The World (The Werewolf’s Tale) – Luninosity
Summary: An Erik/Charles story very loosely based on Marie de France’s 12th-century French werewolf tale, in which Erik is the man transformed into a wolf (he’ll get changed back by the end, it’s not that kind of story, though they very definitely do fall in love) and Charles is a king and eventually there’s a happy ending. Also, a villain’s nose gets bitten off.

Erik Lehnsherr is set with a good business, a manor and grounds, staff and acquaintances he can lean on if needed. I was in London the other day, and in a bookseller’s along The Strand I found the most interesting and instructive volume. Or rather, it would have proved instructive if we had not already worked our way through much of the repertoire.
Blue Skies – baehj2915, marourin

When Charles and Erik meet, it seems like an appropriate expression of the zeitgeist–a confluence of passion, romance, and change. But the good times never last. The Rise of Plastic Figures – Is This a Trend That’s Here to Stay?
Tumblr media
Wargames Factory Page
There haas been a recent and quiet revolution in wargaming of late - The development and proliferation of high-quality hard plastic miniatures (in some cases multipart and poseable). While the idea of plastic miniatures isn’t new, wargamers have always liked the heft of metal in their hands. But there are changes in the wind.
So, why the sudden popularity of plastic miniatures?
·        Cost – Metal costs worldwide have skyrocketed in recent years, and they’ve shown no sign of dropping. Plastic is much cheaper to produce after the expensive process of mold creation is complete. But unlike molds for metal figures, plastic molds don’t wear out with use. They can be used repeatedly with little if any loss of fidelity. Plus, one box of plastic figures can give you all you need to start an army in some rules sets.
·        Technology Improvements – With the developments in 3D printing, CAD sculpting technology, and so many related developments, the truth is, plastic figures are equaling and overtaking metal figures in their quality, especially some of the efforts by the Perry Brothers.
·        Ease of painting - Unlike their soft plastic brethren, hard plastic is much easier to paint and holds that paint well with the usual primer and varnish coats. It also makes it easier for someone from the scale modeling side to transition to wargaming, as they’ll already have many of the tools to work with these figures.
·        Customizable – On some of the larger figures, if you’re so inclined, you can mix and match limbs, weapons, heads, anything your heart and skill desires. And many of the manufacturers include extra weapons and limbs for just such a reason.
So, what’s out there? Some of the more notable manufacturers out there include:
Tumblr media
Wargames Atlantic
Wargames Atlantic has a good reputation out there that covers quite a few different periods, including Ancients, Napoleonics, and World Wars I and II. You get around 32 28mm figures for $35, which translates to about $1 a figure. That’s a bit better than the metal average of $2.50 for a 28mm lead figure. For historical players, this is a good development.
Tumblr media
Wargames Atlantic
Perry Miniatures was one of the first big producers of 28 mm hard plastic miniatures, and they’ve no sign of slowing down. They include boxes of historically accurate units that make it easy to build for Sharp Practice and Black Powder rules. They cover such wide subjects as the English Civil War, American Civil War, Napoloenics, World War II, Colonials, and American Revolution. They even sell accessory packs with more rifles and more limbs to allow for more variety for those looking to do conversions! One box set will set you back about $28.00, which for 40-50 figures is an incredibly good price and a cheap way to get into some of these rules sets.
Tumblr media
Warlord Games Site
Warlord Games has been putting out more than a few plastic figure lines in 28mm, 1/300, and now 15mm American Civil War.
Tumblr media
Warlord’s been a leader in the field and has quite a few options in their Bolt Action boxes, and is known for supporting their product lines well. Look at the variety in most of their figure lines. Their 28mm is a bit pricy, with 40-45 figures for $56. But in the 15mm offerings, you can get 100 figures for $32. While that is a brigade for Black Powder, it’s practically several dozen brigades for, say Fire and Fury. Considering it also comes with commanders and some artillery, it’s a pretty good deal.
Tumblr media
Victrix Models makes a variety of plastic miniatures in 28mm, 54mm, and 12mm (World War II). I’ve seen Victrix in the flesh, and they put out a nice product for what you get. If you want to do 12mm WWII, you couldn’t do better than picking up their lines to start. They really have a lot to get you started with a variety of figures for such rules as Kampfgruppe Commander or “O” Group. Their 28mm Ancients and Dark Ages offerings I have played with, and they are really nice figures, to say the least. Prices are cheaper than Perry, with 56 Napoloenics in the Austrian box for $25. And you get flags too!
In conclusion, it’s fairly obvious that we’re in a golden age of plastic miniatures. These are only some of the manufacturers out there. If you haven’t tried any of these or other offerings, give them a try, you might like them enough to make them part of your army.

Link
Historical movies can be very dry because the characters don’t speak in a manner that’s relatable and the monumental, earth-shattering events that changed the course of human history don’t resonate if they’re presented in a boring, academic way. The best historical movies are the ones that inject a healthy dose of entertainment — even if that means slightly fictionalizing the story.
RELATED: Close Your Eyes!: 10 Behind-The-Scenes Facts About The Favourite
Yorgos Lanthimos’ Oscar-winning gem The Favourite, starring Olivia Colman, is a prime example of a historical epic that isn’t dull, because it has a pitch-black comedic sensibility. A dark sense of humor is a great way to make history more interesting.
10 The Favourite (2018)
Tumblr media
After exploring a dark near-future in The Lobster, Yorgos Lanthimos went back to the 1700s for The Favourite, a historical love triangle revolving around Queen Anne and the two women vying for the position of “Court favourite.”
Olivia Colman, Emma Stone, and Rachel Weisz are all perfectly matched in the lead roles, while Robbie Ryan’s cinematography recalls the sumptuous visuals of Barry Lyndon.
9 The Death Of Stalin (2017)
Tumblr media
Renowned political satirist Armando Iannucci turned his sights to Soviet history with 2017’s The Death of Stalin, a hysterical comedy about the power struggle following the 1953 death of Joseph Stalin.
Essentially, Iannucci told the story of Stalin’s demise and the fight for control of the Soviet Union as a feature-length episode of The Thick of It or Veep set in Russia.
8 Full Metal Jacket (1987)
Tumblr media
In the first half of Stanley Kubrick’s Full Metal Jacket, a bunch of Marines go through boot camp and have their individuality chipped away. In the second half, they’re shipped off to war, where they lose their humanity.
RELATED: Full Metal Jacket & 9 Other Darkly Comedic War Movies
While there are plenty of harrowing twists and turns along the way, Full Metal Jacket is filled with Kubrick’s signature dark humor — particularly in R. Lee Ermey’s scenes. In the role of Gunnery Sergeant Hartman, Ermey was allowed to improvise (a rarity for a Kubrick movie), drawing on his own experiences as a drill sergeant to whip the cast into shape. The movie ends with the soldiers ironically singing the “Mickey Mouse March” as they leave the Battle of Huế.
7 Marie Antoinette (2006)
Tumblr media
Sofia Coppola’s biopic of Queen Marie Antoinette in the lead-up to the French Revolution is shot in the cerebral style of Malick and Kubrick but written in the style of a teen comedy.
Kirsten Dunst gives one of her all-time most memorable performances in Marie Antoinette as the title character, while Rose Byrne, Jason Schwartzman, Molly Shannon, and Rip Torn all provide strong support.
6 Django Unchained (2012)
Tumblr media
The subject matter of Quentin Tarantino’s Django Unchained — American slavery — made its dark sense of humor a point of controversy when it first hit theaters in 2012.
Starring Jamie Foxx as a freed slave who becomes a bounty hunter killing white slavers for a living, Django Unchained is both a masterfully crafted spaghetti western and an incisive satire about the ugliest chapter in U.S. history.
5 I, Tonya (2017)
Tumblr media
Margot Robbie starred as Tonya Harding in this darkly comic dramatization of the famous figure skater’s 1994 attack on Nancy Kerrigan. I, Tonya tells its story through mockumentary-style interviews with its unreliable narrators.
Sebastian Stan co-stars as Harding’s friend and later husband Jeff Gillooly, while Allison Janney won an Oscar for her turn as Harding’s abusive mother LaVona Golden.
4 Love And Death (1975)
Tumblr media
Long before his disturbing scandal, Woody Allen’s Love and Death went over a lot of audiences’ heads back in 1975, because it’s predominantly a satire of Russian literature. It follows two Russians as they struggle through the Napoleonic Era.
Napoleon Bonaparte is played by James Tolkan, most renowned for playing Mr. Strickland in the Back to the Future trilogy, while Diane Keaton reprises her regular role as Allen’s comic foil.
3 Goodfellas (1990)
Tumblr media
Martin Scorsese’s Goodfellas is primarily a drama, but it has more laughs than the average full-on comedy. Scenes like the “Funny how?” confrontation and a drunken Henry laughing hysterically at his mother-in-law make Goodfellas a hilarious movie.
RELATED: Goodfellas: 5 Ways It's Scorsese's Best Movie (& 5 Alternatives)
It’s also a poignant portrait of the mafia. This movie offers such an accurate portrayal of mob life that real-life gangsters have said it plays like a home movie.
2 BlacKkKlansman (2018)
Tumblr media
John David Washington stars in Spike Lee’s BlacKkKlansman, the incredible true story of a Black cop who managed to become a member of the Ku Klux Klan over the phone and sent his Jewish colleague in his place to the KKK’s meetings. Since the story is so astounding and a Black man tricking the Klan is inherently comedic, Lee brought a healthy amount of humor to this movie.
Although it’s set in the ‘70s, Lee’s movie captured contemporary fears about the rise of neo-Nazism and white nationalism in present-day America.
1 Barry Lyndon (1975)
Tumblr media
One of Kubrick’s more underrated works, Barry Lyndon tells the saga of a duelist who wins the love of a widow and takes the place of her deceased aristocratic husband.
From its surprisingly hilarious opening duel, Barry Lyndon positions itself firmly as a dark comedy, like most of Kubrick’s other movies.

Fireships
They were already used in ancient times, the first missions being known from the Athenian expedition to Sicily (415-413 BC) and the siege of Tyros (332 BC). And even in China in 208 A.D. the use of them during the batlle of the red rock was documented. But its main use was from the 13th to the 19th century. While only used sparingly during the Napoleonic Wars, fire ships as a distinct class were part of the British Royal Navy until 1808, at which point the use of permanently designated fire ships attached to British squadrons disappeared. Fire ships continued to be used, sometimes to great effect, such as by the U.S. Navy at the Battle of Tripoli Harbor in 1804 and by the British Navy's Thomas Cochrane at the Battle of the Basque Roads in 1809, the very last mission was probably during a battle during the Greek War of Independence 1821-29.Because for the most part they were considered an obsolete weapon by the early 19th century.
Tumblr media
The Defeat of the French Fireships attacking the British Fleet at Anchor before Quebec City.  28 June 1759.
Structure and Function
Mostly small, old or retired ships like the pinasse or the sloop were used, but also larger ships could be used as we can see it on old paintings. A so-called fire chamber was installed on board the respective ship, which was mostly closed below deck between bow and main mast by a bulkhead or a shed from the other rooms. The combustion chamber was filled with bundles of reed grass, hemp heaps, shavings, tow and bush branches, all of which were covered with flammable liquids.
On a framework or gangboards, wooden tubes or gutters were laid in several parallel rows over the entire length and width of this combustion chamber, resin-coated from the inside, which were connected to each other and in which the running fire required for the ignition of the main burning material ran along.  On each side of the fireman there were usually five to six hatches closed by flaps which, in contrast to piece ports, could be opened from top to bottom by a hinge attached to the underside. In front of each of these closed hatches, a ten-inch iron tube with a five-inch diameter, closed at the rear, was installed, which can also be called a chamber gun. These chamber guns were loaded exclusively with powder and a wooden plug was driven into the tube in front of the propelling charge. In use, the chamber guns were later fired by the ignited barrage via a fuse in the ignition hole, so that the previously closed hatches were blown open by the shots and the additional fresh air that flooded the combustion chamber could provide more activity for the spreading conflagration.

Dutch fire ship attack on the English flagship Royal James at the Battle of Solebay (1672) by Willem van de Velde the Younger
Below the main and forestay shrouds, vertical tubes were installed in the firebox, under which a fire barrel stood. These tubes were covered with wooden plugs and a tarred tarpaulin on deck to prevent unintentional ignition or ignition by the enemy. Immediately before the ignition both were removed, so that the fire ignited in the fire chamber could spread over the vertical tubes fast at the shrouds and at the remaining rigging of the fire ship.
The fire barrels as well as the aforementioned fuel materials such as bushes, chips, reed grass, etc. were dunked in ethyl alcohol and sprinkled with fine gunpowder with a cotton fuse and could thus be ignited with a time delay.
In the upper deck there were also two further small hatches, through which the ignited fire could also spread well on deck, especially as the upper deck planks were specially resin-coated for this purpose.

The Burning of a Turkish Frigate, Constantinos Volanakis
On the sides of the fireman, pieces of canvas, so-called fire shirts, mixed with sulphur and gunpowder, were hung, which could be ignited with a pistol shot.
Since a fire could not be controlled and ignited by a single person, there were also crew, officer and captain's cabins on board, which were located in exactly this order behind the closed firebox and in which the ship's crew was accommodated according to their rank. Tradition has it that the crews of 10 to 12 sailors received double pay due to the high degree of self-endangerment.
Fireships were used particularly successfully against anchoring fleets, as they could not get to safety quickly enough. Sailing fleets sometimes had to perform breakneck evasive manoeuvres for the same reasons. Thus the order of an attacked fleet could disintegrate, which often led to defeat. A well-known example for this is the fate of the Spanish Armada, which had to accept a defeat against an English fleet equipped with only eight fire ships. The effect of fireships could be more devastating than gunfire, as the rigging, sails and hulls of the wooden sailors were often bone dry and sealed with tar against moisture. Completely undamaged ships could therefore be almost completely on fire in a few minutes and had to be abandoned.

Fireships on the Hudson River, by Geoff Hunt
In the battle, the fireship went behind the line(s) of the own warships. This usually prevented him from being ignited by enemy fire before he was deployed. The ship was equipped with grappling hooks at the cams and sailed during the battle towards the enemy. On the way there the protective covers of the vertical tubes and the fire barrels were removed and thus made ready for action.
The fireship then sailed through his own lines towards a certain ship and ideally hooked the grappling hook on the enemy ship, while his own crew also tried to moor on the enemy ship using grappling hooks. The ideal position for a fireship attack was a bow-to-bow position, as the enemy could not reach the burning fireship and countermeasures were hardly possible. If the fire had come close enough to the enemy or had even managed to moor, the captain ignited the two tubes with the wildfire and went with the rest of the crew via a hatch near the tube into a longboat and rowed away hastily.
The flames of the burning fireship, who was hooked to the outer wall of the destroyable ship, then spread to the enemy ship and ideally made it unfit to fight or manoeuvre. Often the action ended with the total loss of the enemy ship if the fire could not be extinguished in time and reached the powder chambers. To prevent a fireship from setting oneself on fire, i.e. when evasive manoeuvres with one's own ship or sinking attempts by the fireman were unsuccessful or impossible - fire hooks were used. Fire hooks were strong trees or spires that were spread through the piece ports to prevent the fire from getting stuck to the hull of the ship. However, it was most expedient to send out armed dinghies in the direction of the fire ship and to hijack this or the longboat of the enemy.
Special types
Dutch Hellbranders,
were first mentioned in the chronicles of the siege of Antwerp in 1584/1585.  On 5 April 1585 they were deployed on the Dutch Schelde off Antwerp against Spanish troops. Constructed by the Italian war builder Federigo Giambelli, they were used here against a ship blockade bridge reinforced with garrisons.
Although it was not possible to destroy the bridge and restore the navigability of the river, one of the unmanned Hellbranders ran up against a part of the bridge near the garrison there and exploded here. The explosion and its consequential damage apparently killed nearly 1000 soldiers in one fell swoop.

An English infernal machine or hellburner,
was an armoured fire ship, which was further developed by the English on the basis of Dutch design patterns of Hellbranders and first used in St. Malo on 27 November 1693. The aim was to destroy the fortified city of St. Malo with such a ship, but this was not possible because the unmanned infernal machine ran aground before reaching the fortification walls. Another use of English infernal machines became known during an attack on a pier in the French port of Dieppe in 1693 during the Nine Years' War.

Rocket ships,
I had already written about them in a separate post. This can be read here again.
Structure and Function
English infernal engines as well as Dutch infernal burners were ships loaded with the fuels usual for fire ships. In addition, they were also equipped with a considerable number of black powder barrels in the combustion chamber and thus represented floating bombs, which were detonated by a combined clockwork and flintlock mechanism or another ignition delay mechanism.
In addition to the fuel and explosion materials described above, there were also scrap metal parts (e.g. ploughshares), gravestones and marble balls on board, which had a kart-like function due to the explosion of the black powder barrels and could therefore result in severe or even fatal injuries, if these were accelerated by the shock wave directly on people in the vicinity of the explosion or simply rained down. Buildings and fortifications could also be seriously damaged. The upper deck of the ships was often still covered with granite slabs, so that on the one hand a protective function against enemy fire was given and in the context of the intended explosion granite splinters or hitting whole granite slabs had correspondingly damaging effects on the enemy.
In addition to the devastating consequences of the explosion, the fuel originally loaded on the ships also caused additional fires to break out in many places on the periphery of the explosion site.
