Nami's development going from learning to accept help from other people to having to put herself in danger for said friends is so fucking fire AAAAAA

Like this is a small detail but she had her weapon ready when the straw hats rushed into iceberg's room even though she didn't fight then she WAS ready to

And then her telling Sanji she'll fight Kalifa is one of my favorite moments honestly

She doesn't know shit about what her df, for all she knows the second Kalifa uses whatever she did to Sanji she is DEAD but still deciding to fight her to both avenge Sanji but also to save Robin UGHH

ANd then in Thriller Bark where Lola gets knocked out by the cunt and she heads back to fight him WHILE saying she knows her attack won't do much only to be rewarded with him instantly collapsing?? Actual fire

And that's just her development her character traits are amazing 😭 a obsession with money but still having lines she won't cross as seen in Skypiea when Enel offered her gold or how the time she spent with the straw hats before returning to Arlong meant so much to her that she was willing to stab her own hand and fake Usopp's death???

And of course her fighting style is so cool I don't expect a big Nami fight every arc but when they come I fucking ADORE them

Personally? I refuse to get over the fact that Monkey D. Luffy, one of the most fearless, reckless, tough, impulsive, fight-happy, determined, rough, hopeful characters I have ever seen in fiction, does not have a fight reflex when he is legitimately afraid.

He has a freeze reflex.

You know how few protagonists have a freeze reflex?

You know how many One Piece characters have a fight reflex? It's probably most of them (Ace, Zoro, and Kid are pretty notable examples). And after that, flight is probably next (Usopp, Nami, etc).

But Luffy has a freeze reflex. Consistently. Sure, he's learned to push through it, to snap out of it, but when he's really truly scared? It's like he's seven and helpless all over again, and he can't move. Just for a second.

for the last pic im thinking that maybe the first time you try to fight crocodile for plot purposes, its impossible to win and you (luffy) get the shit kicked out of you and then you get expelled. After that, sabo takes luffy to his appartment since he's no longer at his boarding school and ace visits to help with emotional support and planning for the future.

zoro and sanji are sooooo into promises and oaths it's unbearable. dork ass losers probably exchanged vows before they even had their first kiss. imagine sitting at the Sunny's dining room table at 8am sharp and you hear stuff like "nobody else can kill you, I feel it in my bones, I will chase you to the edges of the earth to make sure of it" whole time they're arguing about who has to pass the salt to usopp. everyone else thinks they're banging but this is all a prelude to like holding hands or something.

I love how extreme found family is in one piece. Like they took supernatural line of "Family don't end in blood" and actually made good on it. Because it's not just that the crew found each other even before that only really very briefly Robin, Usopp and Luffy could say that anyone biologically related to them raised them.

Like Luffy had Garp and that's his grandpa but he also had Makino and Shanks and the red hair pirates and they were a family unit and he also had Ace, Sabo Dandan and the bandits and they were a family as well and it's never who mattered more to Luffy or who actually raised him cause they all did. It'd be hard to put him in a nuclear family structure because so many people fill the same roles in his life in different ways and that's great like Kung Fu panda said "that doesn't mean less for one parent it just means more for Luffy"

And that's the thing I think sometime fandom can get very obsessive with trying to pin down who is whose surrogate father/mother how do they fit in the nuclear family structure and while that's fun and there's nothing wrong with head cannon characters that way I also think it's important to remember that not every relationship needs a title or definition sometimes you are just family and that's valid too.

Ace had Luffy and Garp but he also had the whitebeard pirates and his pops same with Sabo and the revolutionaries

Zoro with Kuina and his old kendo master, that was maybe more of a rivals, mentor mentee relationship than whatever Mihawk Zoro and Perona had going on but it's all family none the less.

Chopper with Hiririluk and Kureha. Perona and Moria, Usopp with the little village boys and Kaya. Shanks and Buggy with the Roger Pirates. They might not all have had defined roles with each other but it was still family.

Just like Sanji, Nami, Franky and Law and their more defined Surrogate familes

And people like Vivi Robin Usopp and Shirahoshi who had/have their biological parents/family that love them and raised them.

It's nobody that I've just mentioned properly fitting squarely into any of these categories because it's all complicated family is complicated and its messy and it's big and everyone in your family might not have even met but it's family and it doesn't end in blood and for some people it never started there either.

i promise i’ll shut up about robin and sanji eventually but not quite yet anyway the fact that sanji was probably, out of all the straw hats (bar luffy), the most vocal about getting robin back (see: him going after her by himself), how he so adamantly didn’t believe a word she (or nami during arlong park for that matter) said and how on top of that witnessed first hand just how far luffy is willing to go for his crew mates - he saw him declare war on the world government for robin for gods sake - and yet still believed that luffy would give up on and leave during whole cake island fucks me up to an immeasurable degree. he’s seen luffy’s unwavering faith in his crew and their motives twice now and yet he still didn’t think he would be afforded the same treatment and that absolutely breaks my heart

I think one of my favorite parts of nami’s character is like. she may not be as much of a powerhouse fighter as her crewmates, but she has a kind of fierce protective streak that rivals even luffy’s. there’s something to be said for the way she sees herself as specifically luffy’s protector, too. she looks at luffy and understands that he is trusting her to help him navigate which social rules he can keep ignoring and which ones he needs to obey and when; to know which way they need to go and what they need to do to keep the ship and crew safe. I’ve called her his replacement for pragmatism before, but it’s more than that! nami gets upset with him after Jaya and when she realizes he’s gonna make them wait 2 years bc in those moments he has made it impossible for her to protect him and she HATES that. I think it’s why she and zoro understand each other so well sometimes, especially when it comes to luffy; they’ve both built their sense of self and purpose on protection and a refusal to ever just accept a loss as inevitable, as differently as it presents in each of them.

I loved the designs for @where-does-the-heart-lie 's op fighter AU game (seriously Whery, you cooked haaard) and the theme of fighting for love really reminded me of the song "True Kinda Love" from the SU movie so of course I had to draw the strawhats hugging like that one scene at the start of the song. (Robin sang btw. She has such Garnet wibes)

Loved the shading on Brook's pants and the colours in his afro, that's such a vibe for him. Robin was literally gorgeous and perfect and Chopper with the reindeer spots is so precious. Usopp's fit is also extremely adorable even if here you can't see it well. The backrpund is just a heart. I couldn't think of anything else.

(Also remind me to never draw these many characters togheter in such a cramped space. I feel like I've gotten the anatomy all wrong)

been thinking about my Straw Hat!Ichiji AU again

and i thought "hey, who would Ichiji have most beef with in the crew?"

the answer is simple.

Nami.

Ichiji has the least patience with Nami, especially when she's on a treasure/money-hungry mood. he hates her debts with ridiculous and often unreasonable interest rates, but he's especially annoyed whenever Sanji is twirling around in his "love cook" mode and how Nami often uses him to her advantage

don't get me wrong, Ichiji respects women and would never kick or hurt a lady (a lesson Zeff has drilled in him since child). but he doesn't acknowledge Nami as a "lady" and believes there's a difference between normal ladies and pirate ladies.

his annoyance gets more evident through different arcs. like in Alabasta when Nami kept using a perfume that made Chopper feel sick (because he has heightened senses), Ichiji got irritated enough to snatch the perfume bottle and throw it away in the desert, "home run style". yeah, he got a lot of shit from Nami and Sanji about this, but he had no regrets.

other times, he gets very annoyed whenever Nami prefers others to fight battles instead of her. Ichiji firmly believes that everyone should fight their own battles and he knows that Nami isn't so weak as she pretends to be.

technically, Ichiji had beef with Nami since Baratie because she escaped a bill by taking advantage of Sanji's "love cook" tendencies. so Ichiji still keeps a bill for the food she had at Baratie, but is waiting for the right moment to give Nami a taste of her own medicine.

and yes, the Baratie bill has an interest rate. (but not an unreasonable one, like Zoro's debt to Nami which is apparently 200% interest rate or something. yeah, he's never gonna afford any kids at that rate.)

i kinda view Nami and Ichiji as friendly rivals, although more lightheartedly than Zoro and Sanji (and they obviously has an unresolved sexual tension going on. and just to piss Nami off, Ichiji often says that Usopp is much cuter than her. 😈
