21 December 1495 - death of Jasper Tudor

Duke of Bedford, Earl of Pembroke and the King’s uncle, he dies at Thornbury Castle in South Gloucester. That Jasper passed away in his own bed as a wealthy old man is a testament to his reputation as the great survivor of the Wars of the Roses whilst all around him were cut down prematurely during the three decades of brutal civil war.

Few lives contain the drama of Jasper Tudor’s, his unyielding loyalty to his family and instinct for survival against the odds key characteristics which ensured the accession of the Tudors to the English throne. He left a wife Katherine Wydeville and no legitimate heirs, and was buried in Keynsham Abbey in Somerset. Although his tomb was presumably impressive such was his esteemed position as the beloved uncle of Henry VII, the remains were lost during the Dissolution of the Monasteries.

Jasper’s importance to Henry was evident by the appearance of the king and his queen at his funeral. Jasper’s will has been written and signed at Thornbury on 15 December, with Henry his chief heir of the estates as the son of his brother Edmund. In his will Jasper bequeathed his soul ‘to almightie god to our blessed lady the moder the virgine Mary and to all saintes my body to be buried in our lady the monasterie of Keynsham’.

Jasper also arranged in his will for four priests 'to syng perpetually in the saide church and Monastery aswele for my soule and for my faders soule as for the soules of the noble memorie Kateryne some tyme Quene of England my moder And of Edmund late Erle of Richemonde my brother and of all other my predecessours’. His death must have been crippling to Henry, depriving the king of the one councillor and advisor whose loyalty was never in question.

Equally the first biography of the little-known Jasper Tudor, the only peer to fight through the Wars of the Roses from first to last battle, illustrated his noble selflessness to a lost cause and confirmed that he was the true ‘dynasty-maker’ of the Tudors. The Earl of Warwick was known in history as the ‘Kingmaker’. However, the Yorkist king Edward IV’s legacy only survived two years under his brother Richard III, but without Jasper there could never have been a Tudor dynasty.
