Mini-review:

This was cute! It was certainly predictable, but all the characters are likable and the show was clearly made by pros. In fact, it didn't surprise me at all when I realized Morio Asaka and Madhouse were behind this. They have made some of the best animes of all time and they clearly know how to make the most of their skills even for a relatively simple story. Anyway, I really liked the way the characters develop. I know some people might be uncomfortable with the age gap, but the show handles it gracefully and I wasn't bothered by it at all. I also loved how they incorporated games and gaming into the plot. I think I hadn't seen that in a romcom before, so it felt quite refreshing and helped make up for the predictability of the whole thing. That being said, the ending felt somewhat anticlimactic and sudden. It did make me look forward to future episodes, though, so maybe that was the goal. To sum up, I'd recommend this if you're looking for a solid, feel-good anime romcom.

I've alluded to tri. having some very troubled production behind the scenes, and among everything that apparently went on back there, there seem to have been at least two major bottlenecks: 1) the fact that the director (who, based on his own statements about deliberately not consulting source material, most likely didn't even watch Adventure to begin with) kept asking everyone to make things more "mature" without being clear on what that actually meant, and 2) the fact they ran out of budget and had to rewrite the entire plot halfway into it. Even the most brilliant of creators probably wouldn't be able to work at their best under such conditions.

But conversely, this also means that there were some excellent people involved in production whose efforts probably haven't been as appreciated as they should be! So I want to take a moment to spotlight some people I want to give props to:

Ayana Yuniko and Nakanishi Yasuhiro: These two scriptwriters were childhood Digimon fans who were thrilled to be on the project, and their enthusiasm clearly shows in every interview they were in. Ayana even made keen observations like noticing that the Adventure kids aren't as super-tight as people tend to make them out to be (something I've pointed out myself, and something that generally only tends to crop up among fans who have studied the series closely), and Nakanishi stated that she would slip him detailed notes about the characters and their relationships.

Both of them stated they were trying to portray the Adventure characters in a character-accurate way but kept getting their scripts rejected for not being "mature" enough, leaving them unsure about what they were supposed to do. Their roles on the series were also limited; Ayana was on parts 1, 2, and 4 while Nakanishi was on part 4 only, and they were sharing the scriptwriter role with multiple others (even within a single movie). But if I were asked to pick who on the staff list I would want to see come back for another Digimon work, it would absolutely be these two.

Kakikara Yuuko: The one in charge of overall writing for the series. tri. had a total of five scriptwriters and could have up to four(!) on a given movie, so because of that, her statements on the series and its story direction have been a bit difficult to tell whether it was her idea personally or whether she was delivering the writing room's discussion result. But one of her final statements on the series basically amounted to "I'm grateful if you even came to watch it to the end at all," and she was quite humble about saying she felt things could have been done differently; considering it sounds like she had a hard time keeping everyone and everything in order, I can only imagine she went through a lot trying to make sure everything ended safely. Incidentally, her writing portfolio is also quite respectable (and even includes kids' shows).

Suzuki Takaaki: The person with the job of "setting researcher", i.e. the one with the job of looking into the lore. Sadly, it seems like most of his ideas didn't make it into the final series (possibly because of the budget loss-induced rewrite), but his one solo interview indicates that he put quite a bit of conscientious thought into how Digital World lore works, including the idea of an EMP weapon that would affect Digimon easily but not humans (an idea that doesn't pop up among fans as often as you'd think, and took up until last year to make it into actual Adventure material via Takeru's 02TB in-universe fanfic).

Sakabe Gou: The person in charge of the series BGM. We haven't heard a lot from him, but the little we have indicates that although he also had difficulty understanding what the director was asking for when he wanted "mature" music of some kind, he himself put some very thorough thought put into the composition. In particular, he went into detail regarding the music used at the beginning of part 4, which seems to be a fan-favorite track from what I've seen (it's also my favorite too!). Sakabe also has an extensive and respectable portfolio outside Digimon; in particular, he's very highly regarded in Kamen Rider circles, so if you have a friend who's a fan, it might be a good idea to ask them about it!

Thankfully, there is no liked artwork involving Miri in that way (as far as I've seen, I didn't look through all of their likes though). Only some official posts and such. But it is still creepy to see that they've liked images of real life toddler clothes (the post says in JP, "Aren't they (the clothes) cute?"), women in Lolita outfits (which, just on its own is no problem, but with the other things this guy has liked...), and images of women's asses and posing sexy, etc....Ugh.

So, even seeing them like the official BD's stuff creeps me out right now...

The only episode that they wrote, according to ANN, was Episode 12. Looking at this guy's likes, it is clear that they like women, so it isn't that surprising that that Kazuki line popped up in Episode 12.

They worked on the series composition alongside Yuuko Kakihara, but when it comes to actual scripting, it seems they did the last episode only.

The bulk of the series writing was by Yuuko Kakihara (Ep. 1-6, 9 & 10), while Episodes 7, 8, and 11 were written by Yasuhiro Nakanishi, so I'm largely just going to be ignoring the fact that this creep contributed to the creation of Buddy Daddies. It seems they contributed mostly to the technical aspects: the composition, more than anything else.

Anyway, I shouldn't have looked. I just wanted to see if they liked any Kazurei stuff. 😫

Moje pierwsze zetknięcie się z historią Hanako było wtedy, gdy moja przyjaciółka pożyczyła

mi pierwszy tom jej mangi. Dobrze zapamiętałam ten komiks, ponieważ bardzo, ale to

bardzo nie przypadł mi do gustu. Nie mogłam zrozumieć, dlaczego wszyscy tak uwielbiają tę

serię. Nie dawało mi to spokoju. Dlatego właśnie zdecydowałam się wypróbować adaptację

tej mangi, której autorami są Aidalro, w formie 12-odcinkowego anime.

Wyprodukowany przez studio Lerche Shōnen z gatunku komedia, nadprzyrodzone został

wypuszczony na ekrany 9 Stycznia 2020. Pierwszy sezon zakończył się 26 Marca tego

samego roku.

Został wyreżyserowany przez Masaomi Andō a za scenariusz odpowiada Yasuhiro

Nakanishi. Mimo, że papierowa wersja nie przekonała mnie do siebie, to po obejrzeniu

anime jestem naprawdę ciekawa dalszych losów bohaterów.

Główną bohaterką tej historii jest Yashiro Nene. Jej przyjaciółka opowiada o plotkach, jakie

krążą na temat Uczelni Kamome, do której uczęszczają. Jedna z nich dotyczy ducha

dziewczyny Hanako, która przywołana w damskiej toalecie jest w stanie spełnić czyjeś

życzenie, jednak w zamian zabiera od tej osoby coś ważnego.

Yashiro postanawia przywołać tę zjawę, by zbliżyć się do obiektu swoich westchnień ale

zamiast dziewczyny pojawia się duch chłopca, który przedstawia się jako Hanako.

Postanawia on pomóc dziewczynie i tak po pewnych wydarzeniach, wybiera ją na swoją

pomocnicę. W trakcie dalszego rozwoju historii pojawia się też bardzo interesująca postać

chłopca-egzorcysty, Minamoto Kou, którego misją jest przeprowadzenie na Hanako

egzorcyzmów, jednak zaprzyjaźnia się on z duchem i Yashiro.

Brzmi na bardzo pogmatwaną historię i taką właśnie jest. Przez to bardzo ciężko czytało mi

się tom pierwszy mangi, ale w anime wszystko zostało dobrze pokazane. Akcja ciągle idzie

do przodu, a bohaterowie mają zabawne i interesujące przygody.

Bawi mnie sposób, w jaki autorzy prezentują niektóre sceny. Słowo, które od razu

przychodzi mi na myśl, gdy oglądam to kolorowe anime to: 'kawaii'. Sposób przedstawienia

postaci i ich myśli często jest naprawdę uroczy i myślę, że dobrze się to sprzedaje w

przypadku tej serii. Gdyby nie wszechobecne podteksty seksualne, powiedziałabym, że jest

to serial dla młodszej widowni. W fabule znajdziemy bardzo ciekawe elementy, ale według

mnie powtarzalne i przewidywalne.

Tak naprawdę ten tytuł zainteresował mnie dopiero w 8 odcinku, kiedy pojawia się Mitsuba,

który jest moją ulubioną postacią.

Niestety sezon pierwszy urywa się w takim momencie, gdy wspomniany przed chwilą

bohater dopiero jest rozwijany i zresztą nie tylko on sam. To, co mnie najbardziej urzekło to

jego relacja z Kou. Oprócz tego w końcowych odcinkach jest nam dane poznać ducha

chłopca, którego wygląd jest niemal identyczny jak u Hanako. Nie bez powodu... Hola!

Gdybym rzekła coś więcej, mogłabym odsłonić zbyt wiele szczegółów tego anime, a

przecież nie chcemy tu spoilerów, prawda? Jednakże zakończenie sezonu z takimi

wydarzeniami i postaciami przekonuje mnie do rozpoczęcia kolejnego.

Jeśli chodzi o kreskę to mogę powiedzieć, że według mojej opinii jest trochę nietypowa.

Choć może 'charakterystyczna' będzie tu lepszym słowem. Ze względu na uroczo

wykreowane postacie kojarzy mi się ona ze stylem kawaii. Pastelowe kolory tego dzieła są

bardzo ładnie ze sobą skomponowane. Myślę, że sama oprawa wizualna jest jednym z

najciekawszych elementów w tym tytule.

Podsumowując, "Hanako, Duch ze Szkolnej Toalety" mogę polecić osobom, które szukają

shōnena do obejrzenia na luzie oraz wszystkim, którzy gustują w dziecinnych klimatach i nie

mają zbyt wielkich wymagań co do fabuły. Mi osobiście historia przypadła do gustu i na

pewno z ciekawości wypróbuję kolejny sezon :)

Commentary by “Jibaku Shounen Hanako-kun” director, Andou Masaomi, and series composer/scriptwright, Nakanishi Yasuhiro, about the whole series!

“Hanako-kun might be a story about a mermaid princess being held captive by an apparition.”

In commemoration of the Blu-ray & DVD release of the TV anime “Jibaku Shounen Hanako-kun”, director Andou Masaomi and series composer/scriptwright Nakanishi Yasuhiro reveal production secrets and hidden stories. The July issue of PASH! is now on sale, and the August issue, which will be released on Friday, July 10th, is being delivered in large amounts.

Here, we will do a partial introduction of the commentary as a special feature!

Apparition #1, “Hanako-san of the Toilet”

Summary Yashiro Nene, a first-year student at the high school of Kamome Academy, summons “Hanako-san of the Toilet”, who is said to grant a wish in exchange for something important, in order to have her feelings corresponded by her senior. However, the one who appeared to her was a boy’s ghost!?

Andou: The first thing that left a deep impression on me in Apparition #1 was the classroom’s stained glass. This scenario is most present in the original work, as the classrooms of Kamome Academy have a stained glass design that goes up from the first to the last floor and divides them into motifs of “sea floor”, “water surface” and “sky”. Nene’s high school first-year classroom is in the “sea floor”. Even now, I still remember feeling the definite power of art and photography involved in this work when I saw the beauty of the stained glass that made an opening for sunset glow in the latter half of Apparition #1. “This will be a wonderful work...” I thought. It was as if the classroom itself was inside a fish tank.

Speaking of which, on Apparition #1, it was Hanako who trapped fish!Nene in a tank, and it is also Hanako who rescues her from it. If you do a stretch in interpretation, the girls’ toilet at sunset can also be deemed as something like a fish tank enclosing Nene. Portrayals of water often appear within the apparitions’ spaces in the series. Looking at it from Nene’s point of view, perhaps not only Apparition #1 but the whole plot might be “the story of a mermaid princess imprisioned by an apparition”. In doing so, the line-up of the classrooms’ stained glass going from the “sea floor” up to the “sky” as the students pass through each year feels like something suggestive for the future of the story in some way. AidaIro is terrifying.

Nakanishi-san, who pieced together the series composition, is also a meritorious person who drew the anime-original moment where Hanako peeks at Nene from the heart shape that he made with his fingers in Apparition #1. He is a reliable writer who can not only put together a whole story but also apply these subtle maneuvers everywhere. There was also the skill of the video editor, Itou-san, who made the contents that brimmed with fun to the point it feels like their filling would spill a little into something that stayed the same in consistency but had its rhythm toned down in order not to be too hasty. Up to this point, some peope might have already noticed it, but I am going to confess before-hand that my comments in this review are generally a repentance for how talented the animation staff of “Hanako-kun” is and how easy the director had it.

Nakanishi: When we were applying “Jibaku Shounen Hanako-kun” into the media called anime, what I thought that seemed the most difficult to handle was the original work’s mysterious atmosphere. It was the part about how much we could depict the sense of distance between Hanako-kun and Nene-chan. I thought we would not be able to convey the appeal of this series to the non-reader viewers unless we portrayed Hanako-kun and Nene-chan’s first meeting with the same care as in the source material, so I was watchful of Apparition #1′s screenplay in order to recreate the original as faithfully as possible.

Apparition #2, “The Fairies”

Summary Having become Hanako-san’s assistant, Nene complains as she is constantly made to clean up the toilet every day. One day, several cases of missing belongings occur in the school. According to the students’ rumors, it seems to be the work of “fairies”...?

Andou: The Mokke’s first appearance! The Mokke walking, bouncing and talking on-screen! It is no exaggeration to say that the world was saved and the purpose of this anime adaptation was achieved by that alone! There is nothing else to talk about in this episode. Oh, and Kou-kun also shows up. 

…I’m sorry. There are many other things to talk about. In particular, I want to mention that the colors change in various ways on Apparition #2. We have an art and cell design that is already excellent just for being able to properly reproduce the original work’s unique, slightly dégradé and pop-like color palettes, but this work does not stop at just that. The series’ setting is limited to a school, and normally, there are not supposed to be any color changes in the same corridors or rooftops, but this time, due to my selfishness, we took the reckless action of changing the whole screen’s color palettes in order to match the types of apparition and the charatcers’ state of mind. This is an amazing thing. I’m… I’m truly sorry.

For example, if we extract only the corridor scene, firstly, it starts with a dim and quiet corridor in the afternoon, and after the combined King Mokke appears, it transforms completely into a spooky corridor of reddish black Mokke color, but once Hanako banishes it, the corridor turns into a happy and warm one. I would like everyone to watch the show again paying attention to the wonderful animation making of the art, cell colorings and the photography staff who put them together, which made these unreasonable requests into a reality throughout the whole series, with a sense that did not destroy the atmosphere of the Hanako world, on top of that. And Mokke too!

Nakanishi: This is an episode where, through the meeting between an apparition that exists in the school and a human being who saw apparitions as hostile, the worldview spread out considerably, even though the setting is only the school. As we were making the original work, which is still on-going, into a one-cour show, I feel like how a human and an apparition would become close to each other... turned into the main theme. I added Nene’s monologue at the end with this meaning to it.
