Hello hello and welcome back to the "jay tortures his namesake" show!

on my little ramble today I do want to note that of Scottish politics types here on Tumblr and elsewhere in the vaguely-lefty-vaguely-gay spheres, the few who're talking about Scottishness and Independence tend to be very leery of acknowledging our worse truths. the fact that Scotland was both a gleeful participant in the Empire, and roped into a shotgun marriage with England. The harm we've done as both aggressors and the harm done to us as the loser in a centuries-long war of colonisation. Early testing for what way, way worse things would be done to first the Irish and then a disturbingly large amount of the world.

The right-hand-man of the bastard empire, and its horrific little dog. Leashed, yes, but biting all the same.

We're much more progressive now than we have ever been and with independence we could finally start to make a change that could be entirely our own. But we'll always have to bear in mind the truths of what we did as a nation and who we profited off to get here.

Maybe we just struggle to come to terms with the greyness of it, the fact there's no good 'us vs them' thing to be had here. Are we in a deeply unfair position in the UK and treated as at best a cash cow to be milked to death? yes. Are we also total bastards in the global history sense? also yes.

SCREAMIFN IM NOT EVEN DONE WITH THE NEW FIC I JUST STOPPED ONCE (spoilers for those who didn’t read) THE MOM DIED. LIKE, yes, okay, it was coming. it was obvious. it was stated. BUT. BUT. ?:!:!3!;!:!:$:&:&:& i don’t know how i can finish this fic. i have to sit and contemplate this. she wasn’t even a canon character (as far as i know). wasn’t even given a name. but was so real to me. the epitome of strength—what it might as well means to be alive—molded tightly by the given title of ‘mother.’ (i swear i was going somewhere w this but IM SAD.) AND? THE LITTLE BITS AND SIGNS OF HER AGING HINDERING HER? THAT STRENGTH? ERRGGGGG SHE’s GONENEJEJJFJDIEISJS

HAHAHAHAHA. i’m sorry for immediately laughing but i can’t help it. i am a terrible person. BUT THE MOTHER WAS SO HUMAN TO ME AND ALSO THE BURDEN OF MOTHERHOOD IN THAT FIC WAS SO INCREDIBLY REAL. anyway let me actually answer the ask now LMAOOOO

the mother was not any canon character in my mind!!! sorta just a made up character who had been with joel for a WHILE before the outbreak!!! i kind of wanted her to be a blank slate other than that, which i did think would make killing her hurt less but !!!! i’m not sure it did!!! i think it’s sad either way bc yk. if she hadn’t had a kid she might’ve survived longer? but equally, she might not have!!!

but yes :( the reader’s mom was in fact an old lady, (no she wasn’t, ~50’s age is NOT old, but in the apocalypse….. kinda is) and her age did hold her back!!! i think bc she had so much stress throughout her life after the apocalypse - LIKE SHE RAISED A WHOLE CHILD!!!!! - she just kinda lost her strength a bit quicker than joel :(
