thinking ab edwin and niko

thinking ab how niko is probably one of his only friends he’s made in the century he’s lived/not lived.

based on what we see of his life and death, he wasn’t popular. based on his personality he’s quite put together, he’s quiet and he watches. he doesn’t take risks really and that leads me to think he didn’t have any good friends. not until charles.

and of course, charles is his best friend. but for whatever their reasons, they hid stuff about their lives from each other. maybe it’s to keep things light, maybe to keep things professional, whatever. i think them making the dead boy detectives agency is their way of connecting without having to connect so seriously— there’s always work to fall back into. it’s lonely, he had a best friend but still was lonely.

but niko, she doesn’t work with them (not officially). she’s just a girl! she was a victim of the supernatural and lived and can now see them, but she’s just a sweet girl who misses her parents and also, doesn’t have any friends! just like edwin hadn’t. but something about her bluntness being so charming, her love for everything, edwin was drawn to it. and then she plays such a big part in edwin accepting himself, he finally has someone he can talk to about these feelings he’s been repressing for nearly 100 years. they can just sit and watch silly shows and she hold no judgement against him for things he doesn’t know!

idk. just edwin’s reaction to niko in the last episode was so heartbreaking, that’s his friend he just lost. the way he screams and then once he’s free all he can do is stare (he can’t even cry but he wants to so badly). charles has to pull him away because he knows death should be coming soon and like. everything else. but edwin physically doesn’t want to leave her. he knows how it feels to have more than one person to confide in now, someone who wants to embrace him fully as is and can give outside perspective and advice and he can trust and trusts him back. how can one go back to loneliness after knowing what it’s like to love and be loved like that?

Magic Kaito & Dead Boy Detectives

Okay I might be overanalyzing but since it was called out by name I wanna talk about how Magic Kaito allows us to deepen our understanding of Niko.

I might be explaining this badly but Magic Kaito is about Kaito Kuroba who has an alter ego as master thief Kaitou Kid. He does heists to try and steal this gem that the organization that killed his dad wants (side note his dad was the former Kaitou Kid). Kaito's clever kid, he's good at magic tricks, he's very confident in himself (he sends letters to the police detailing his heists), and ultimately isn't a bad guy cause he returns the items that he stole, as they aren't the gem. Kaitou Kid has appeared in Detective Conan a few times as an antagonist to Conan.

Now how can this connect to Dead Boy Detectives, more specifically Niko? First of all, since Magic Kaito is connected to Detective Conan we see more of Niko's enjoyment of detective media (of course she also loves Scooby Doo). Niko's consumption of detective media reveals her desire to be a detective, explaining her excitement when learning Edwin and Charles are detectives. Additionally, Niko shows respect to one of the antagonists of DBDA, the Cat King. Despite Kaitou Kid acting as an antagonist in Detective Conan, he possesses redeeming qualities, such as returning his stolen items, and serves as the protagonist of his own story. This connects to Niko's respect for the Cat King as it shows how Niko can have respect and empathy for supposed antagonistic figures. Furthermore, there's an interesting parallel between Kaito and Niko as they have both lost their father. When Kaito loses his father he assumes his father's role as the Kaitou Kid and makes an effort to destroy the gem the organization wants. Niko expresses a desire to bring her father back when talking to the Night Nurse. Could be interesting in a season 2 to dive further into Niko's grief for her father and how that affects her journey from the igloo back to the agency.

I also linked the only 2 posts I could find about this mention in Dead Boy Detectives as I was surprised people weren't talking about it.

But okay yes time to ramble about my dsmp oc in this context hehe

So! I made a pantheon of dsmp gods like years ago and they were all vaguely based on people from the smp, and one of them was a Sapnap god named Nikolaos— but I like to call him Niko c:

Anyways that’s the context but here’s his deal in the dnd au

Instead of him being a god he’s actually an archdevil in the infernal plane! He’s literally a menace and likes fucking around in the material plane sometimes just to see how people would react/do (like Raphael from BG3 but less- smug? Just more genuinely fucking around)

But in the context of this story, he is dnd!Spooky’s patron! He saw that Spooky was being practically used as a punching bag by the town she was raised in and when it got too far to the point of her nearly dying, she made a pact with him and basically burned and killed the whole town for her keeping her alive.

They became very close friends and it soon blossomed into something more when she became an adult, and he does his best to protect her when he can but wants her to find her own footing and see what she can do!

He does show up time to time though in the events of the au, again like Raphael

Cala knows who he is— but only knows him in his human form and not devil form.

Dream definitely knows who he is in general and is just “gods please”

Overall Niko is just a menace and helps when he can, one of the nicer patrons that’s for sure with spooky uwu

like i've watched this show too many time to count now but somehow i'm only now picking up on these bits from the charles vs night nurse scene in ep4

when the night nurse throws crystal away, niko immediately runs over and helps her up

then when they get back to the group, niko stands in front of her, mirroring charles standing in front of edwin
