        blood seeps into the pink fabric of her shirt - truth is, she’d hardly noticed it. there is no pain. where others would feel the sear licking up into their ribcage, there is only nothingness and pressure. she wouldn’t have even bled out without his attention - eventually, her manipulated insides would stitch up the wound, keep her full and breathing. those very actions are likely beginning now. she knows this. she knows - so why doesn’t she stop him when he reaches to touch her? 

       there’s no embarrassment at removing her top. her body has always been other, not a human thing, but simply her outer shell. the embarrassment is that he has to help her, her hands shaking - why are her hands shaking? why does him being so close make her breath hitch? she tries to chalk it up to her own maladjustment in tandem with his uncharacteristic gentleness at cleaning her gash. 

        for a moment, she forgets how laid bare she is, utterly enraptured by how he moves around her. the deftness of his hands used to heal before hurt, how his face never changes. she doesn’t even realize how still she’s become, that she’s stopped breathing - until he moves away to retrieve bandages and suddenly, she’s brought back to consciousness, embarrassed by how far she’d been gone and for how long. 

        it’s only now that she remembers the scar down the length of her stomach, a relic of her father’s experimentation before he’d improved her ability to regenerate. even now, she’s working on perfecting it, but - something about feeling sephiroth patch her wound nearly makes her rethink the upgrade. he comes back with the bandages, she shifts herself for better ease of access. where she’d normally find something sardonic to say, there is nothing. all their usual banter seems to melt away into this - this momentary tenderness that makes her feel calm and yet, electrified all at once.
