So I was curious about the chess game between Rodney and John in s3, ep15 "the game".
Tumblr media
I wanted to know what actually happened there. It looks like the starting position of the scene is this:
Tumblr media
I came up with the following game, which ends in this position, has a decent opening and moves that look normal to me.
e4 e6 2. d4 c5 3. Nf3 cxd4 4. Nxd4 Nc6 5. Be3 Nxd4 6. Bxd4 d6 7. Bd3 Bd7 8. Nc3 Nf6 9. O-O Be7 10. Qf3 a6 11. Rfb1 O-O 12. Qe3 h6 13. Qg3 Bc6
For this game, the evaluation is always between -0.2 and +0.6 which means it is mostly equal, with no one making any mistakes. The evaluation after Rodney's move is +0.3, meaning a tiny advantage for John (who is white and therefore started with a small advantage).
Then we see Sheppard think a while before playing (14. Rf1). This is not a great move but also no mistake, it puts the evaluation at (0.0, meaning completely equal for both).
To this, Rodney says "Like I would need to cheat, playing you. Ha!" and then plays (Nh7), which totally hangs mate in one and is therefore the worst possible move, instantly losing the game from an even position.
Tumblr media
I love how confidently he makes this awful move, while laughing at John.
However, John sees the blunder instantly and wins with (Qxg7#). Checkmate.
To this, Rodney answers by complaining about being distracted, and I guess after this evaluation, it is fair to assume that he was actually very distracted, either by Elizabeth or by John accusing him of cheating because he made a ridiculous move after playing solidly for the first 13 moves.

Is The Wayward Vagabond Good At Chess?
On page 721 of Homestuck, the Wayward Vagabond kills time by playing chess against himself – a ‘stiff training regimen’ (p.720) for the citizen-militia of Can Town that leads to Black checkmating White, just as it was prophesied by Nannasprite that the forces of darkness would always triumph over light. But how does WV’s chess game actually play out, and what can this tell us about them and about Sburb?
First, as @tenaciouschronicler pointed out, the board is set up incorrectly. It’s a perfect mirror of how the board should be – the bottom left and top right squares on a chessboard should always be black, but in WV’s game, they’re white. To analyze this, I transcribed the actual moves that WV makes, and flipped them all horizontally – moving a piece to a2 became h2, b3 became g3, c4 became f4, etc – at which point the game becomes correct.
Here's the game after move 6 and move 13.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
And, in standard chess notation (which is surprisingly quick to learn!), the moves that got us to this point.
d4 Nf6
c4 g6
Nc3 Bg7
e4 O-O
e5 Ne8
f4 d6
Be3 c5
dxc5 Nc6
cxd6 exd6
Ne4 Bf5
Ng3 Be6
Nf3 Qc7
Qb1 dxe5
Every move WV makes is legal within standard chess, so right away, we know they’ve got a good grasp of the rules and aren’t cheating. As Black, they play the King’s Indian Defense, which allows White to control the board in the early game in hopes of a counter-attack afterwards – according to chess.com, it is a ‘risky opening’ that ‘leads to unbalanced positions where Black tries to fight for an advantage instead of equality’ and makes it ‘more difficult for White to play for a draw, which tends to lead to more decisive games’.
Black’s fifth move with the knight is uncommon, but not bad. I spoke to a chess International Master to get his thoughts on the game, and he said ‘Normally people play 4…d6 in the King’s Indian to stop the knight being pushed back like this, but what Black did is also good, and he has a comfortable position out of the opening.’ He described the King’s Indian as ‘a typical fighting opening to get White to overextend’, and White fell for the play.
Homestuck doesn’t show us the middlegame, instead returning to WV’s mayoral dreams and Tab drinking as the timer rapidly counts down – but we return to the game with White in a terrible position. Here's the game where we pick up, and with White in checkmate.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Here, White is in check with an opportunity to take the opposing queen, but instead plays the following endgame moves.
Ke2 Qxg4
Kf2 Ne4
Kf1 Qg3
Re1 Qf2
This isn’t a strategic choice, but ultimately doesn’t matter - ‘No reason at all not to take the queen, White’s move is ridiculous - but he’s completely lost in the endgame anyway, with no real drawing chances’ (Chess IM). The game ends quickly, and the IM’s overall analysis is that ‘Black plays very well, either a strong tournament player or he’s cheating :) But not enough moves to go off to decide that. White is much weaker’.
Of course, Black and White are the same player. This tells us that WV does have a strong knowledge of chess, but either only knows how to play as black, or has a strong bias towards black winning. Either is believable. As a citizen of the ominous planet where the black chess pieces live, WV would likely have spent a lot of time learning strategies for Black to play, but their only knowledge of White would be how to counter their moves. They’re also indoctrinated into loyalty to the dark kingdom royalty, and to seeing Black as the superior force in battle, fated to always triumph.
Especially notable is WV’s unwillingness to capture Black’s queen. It’s an obvious move that wouldn’t have cost them the game. On page 687, WV asserts their hatred of kings as ‘petty, bossy tyrants’ who are ‘basically awful in every way’, but says nothing about queens – I wonder if WV retains some loyalty towards the dark kingdom’s queen, leading to an internal conflict where they’re unwilling to harm even her can representation.
While the battle/chess game likely plays out differently in each iteration of Sburb, WV comes from John’s game and is recreating the battle ‘years in the future’. Can this game tell us about dark and light kingdom politics during John’s game, predicting what we’ll see next in Homestuck? If so, it seems like four white pawns – perhaps representing the four players – will be allowed to initially advance, making it appear that they’re doing well in the game. John, Rose, Dave and GG will have some successes, and might let themselves get complacent with their abilities.
But the dark kingdom will hold back their best resources, and plan for the long term. They’ll take advantage of a couple big mistakes our main characters make while fighting on the side of light, skillfully eliminate these pieces from the board, retain their own queen while destroying the light kingdom’s, and, as the title of page 721 foretells, ‘lead [their] men to victory’.
It’s not a great prophecy for John and his friends – but then again, it’s uncommon for a piece taken off the chessboard to travel to another planet and start sending commands back through time. So, maybe there’s still a chance to swing the real battle in light’s favor.

The King's Gambit
You guys I just had a thought and I am disturbed.
NO DATV SPOILERS.
(*hands you tin foil hat)
Please just.... just put it on please.
In DA:I ;
If you side with the Chargers, and you carry Bull and Solas in your party, they will begin to ‘mental chess’ with each other (Solas says he is trying to help bull get over the loss of the Qun, helps him realize hes not tal-vashoth).
See this “fan-made” (seems pretty professional to me…) video
youtube
I also recommend you read this blog post:
(But only after you’re done with mine.)
In chess you have many pieces that all serve their own function. There's the King and Queen, the pawns, bishops, knights, etc.
In the video (and in DA:I), we learn that Solas calls chess pieces by a different name then what The Iron Bull does; a tribute to the pairs wildly different upbringing.
IT IS THE SAME GAME, THE SAME PIECES, BUT THEY CALL THEM SOMETHING DIFFERENT.
But because they know how the game is played, and the way each piece works, this minor infraction does not stop them from their mental battle.
Solas opened (started) their chess game with the name of a Netflix limited series that most will find familiar; The Kings Gambit.
From a Chess Website:
King's Gambit is an aggressive Chess opening that falls under the category of open games. It is characterized by White sacrificing a pawn on the second move to facilitate rapid development and initiate an attack against the opponent's king, specifically targeting the f7 square.
Ok I still don’t really understand what this means. Lets use Wikipedia.
From Wikipedia:
The King's Gambit is a chess opening that begins with the moves: 1. e4 e5 2. f4 King's Gambit is an aggressive Chess opening, that falls under the category of open games. It is characterized by White sacrificing a pawn on the second move to facilitate rapid development and initiate an attack against the opponent's king, specifically targeting the f7 square.  White offers a pawn to divert the black e-pawn. If Black accepts the GAMBIT, White may play d4 and Bxf4, regaining the gambit pawn with central domination, or direct their forces against the weak square f7 with moves such as Nf3, Bc4, 0-0, and g3. A downside to the King's Gambit is that it weakens White's king's position, exposing it to the latent threat of ...Qh4+ (or ...Be7–h4+),  which may force White to give up castling rights.
Sorry, lets read that again, from the lens of a not-chess player (which I am, so a millions apologies to the people smarter than me reading this who were like, girl ur dumb for just figuring this out).
White begins a game of chess. White offers up a pawn as a sacrifice to black. If black accepts this sacrifice, white’s central control of the board is vulnerable, BUT, they can aggressively attack black’s king.
SO what are the downsides of this move, then? Sounds like a winner for anyone who knows how to play chess (I do not).
Remember when I said:
In the video (and in DA:I), we learn that Solas calls pieces by a different name then what The Iron Bull does; a tribute to the pairs wildly different upbringing.
Bull and Solas call bishops weird things. They call knights weird things, but one of the pieces they agree on, is the tower (or as I call it, the Castle).
Which is weird. I mean, when I was a kid learning chess I called it the castle. It looks like a castle, (or a tower) why not call it a castle?
My cousin, who “taught” me chess, also made me call the pieces their correct names, even though I thought bishop was stupid, and knight even stupid-er. And he made me call my castle by its proper name;
ROOK.
What the fuck is a Kings Gambit again?
You sacrifice a pawn, to gain control of the board. You’re vulnerable, but you have high attack strength.
So WHAT is the downside of Kings Gambit?
From Wikipedia Again:
A downside to the King's Gambit is that it weakens White's king's position, exposing it to the latent threat of ...(mastermind chess moves),  which may force White to give up castling* rights.
Castle?
You mean Rook?
*Castling is a move in chess. It consists of moving the king two squares toward a rook on the same rank and then moving the rook to the square that the king passed over.  Castling is permitted only if neither the king nor the rook has previously moved; the squares between the king and the rook are vacant; and the king does not leave, cross over, or finish on a square attacked by an enemy piece. Castling is the only move in chess in which two pieces are moved at once.
Lets Re-cap:
Kings Gambit is an aggressive chess opening where white (the starting player) sacrifices a pawn (Solas after Inky: check).
Black accepts Whites sacrifice and takes pawn.
White can aggressively attack black, but they are vulnerable.
*Happy Solas Noises*
Rook is their ultimate safety blanket, their last minute escape route.
Rook is White's last resort.
Solas set up a Thedas version of the kings gambit.
But are we playing WITH him? Or AGAINST him?
Oh, and by the way…
THE  KINGS  GAMBIT  IS  ALSO  CALLED  THE  IMMORTAL  GAME
Can someone drink the cool-aid with me pleeeease.

Free Kindle book "NF3, SF6 and the Doomsday Super Greenhouse Gases
Free Kindle book "NF3, SF6 and the Doomsday Super Greenhouse Gases available tomorrow January 18th through January 22nd.
Scientists admit and the near apocalyptic LA fires clearly demonstrate, global warming is proceeding much more rapidly than predicted.  Also quite clear is that our efforts to address climate change have been woeful failures.
The current politically correct strategy for addressing global warming is not only ineffective but is also creating a massively worse situation that threatens to doom mankind and most life on the planet.
Almost all of the efforts to alleviate global warming to date have been focused on carbon dioxide (CO2), the most benign of the greenhouse gases.  The principal strategy has been to replace coal and gas electrical production with "clean energy," especially wind and solar photovoltaics (solar panels).
Nitrogen TriFluoride (NF3), a gas used in the manufacture of computers, flat screen televisions and SOLAR PANELS is 17,200 times more powerful a greenhouse gas than CO2.  While CO2 levels in the atmosphere have barely inched upward and, in fact, have actually decreased in the US and EU, NF3 use has increased by 10-11% a year, and recent studies have shown that NF3 levels in the atmosphere are eight times greater than originally predicted. Currently NF3 is addressed only by a meaningless reporting requirement and even that is being ignored by China and others.
Proponents of terraforming Mars have advocated using NF3 and other super greenhouse gases to warm the Martian atmosphere to Earthlike levels.  More likely, however, is that NF3, etc., will turn the Earth's climate Venus-like, a planet where lead is molten on the surface.
Why aren't the super greenhouse gases being more directly addressed?  In the case of NF3 specifically, given its mind-boggling global warming potential and increasing usage, why have the world's governments and NGOs chosen to ignore it?
One motive might be bureaucratic embarrassment, after all the EPA awarded a prize to initial NF3 manufacturer for replacing an ozone depleting gas.
No doubt there has been lobbying pressure (and misinformation), such as a claim that only 2% of NF3 escapes into the atmosphere.  Scientists, however, have found that the levels of NF3 in the atmosphere are eight times higher than if the 2% was valid.
Also, most NF3 comes from and is used in east Asia.  The big four of which is  China, Japan, Taiwan and South Korea.  China does not even comply with the virtually meaningless reporting requirement.  Agencies and nations may feel enforcement is impossible and return to rearranging the deck chairs on the Titanic.

[(Under A Technicolour Sky.)]
The Sun and Moon talk over a game of chess. And, with some reluctance and pleading, reach a compromise.
1,381 words.
The Sun chewed at their metallic claws, scrawling jumbled words in ink onto a scroll. Their gaze flitted drowsily between the tome sprawled open beside them and the chicken-scratch words forming underneath their quill.
The Observatory would have been quiet, save for the scratching noise of metal upon paper and the slight, uniform ticking of clocks every few moments.
Saturn sighed, setting the pen into the glass of ink as they stretched, their tentacles shooting out in each direction as their joints cracked.
Their gaze fell onto the sky, the stars peering down at them from the vast expanse of the night.
The sky had seemed to move—pools of colour swirling together in technicolour hues like oil, the light of the stars refracting and reflecting from the ceiling of glass.
The floor creaked quietly behind them, and Saturn turned, brushing their hair back into place as they adjusted their vision. There, leaning against the wall, was Seraph, a box tucked under his arm and a soft smirk on his face.
“I thought you said you were going to sleep, Sunny,” he trilled quietly, shadows dancing on his face as he stepped into the light. Shams chuckled sheepishly, stealing the book from the desk and gently stroking the leather cover.
“Perhaps I, er… lost my focus on the time. ‘Twas not intentional.” They explained nervously. The Dove let out a small laugh as he strode over to the Sun, setting the box down on the desk beside Apollo.
“Well, then. You wouldn’t be opposed to a game of chess, would you?” He asked, folding his arms as he smirked down at the Sun. Saturn looked nervously at the scroll, gently pushing the bottle of ink further onto the desk in fear of spilling it.
“I… I’m not particularly sure, Dove. I’m quite busy, as I can’t really be distracted from my duties at hand, an-” They paused, exhaling.
“okay. We’ll play chess. But only one game,” They promised, pushing themself up. Qamar chuckled, stepping out of Saturn’s way as the Sun cleared the surface of the desk, gently taking the chessboard from its box.
Luna sat across from Neptune, placing pieces on the board absentmindedly. The wooden floor groaned as Saturn dragged another chair to the desk, sitting across from the Moon.
“E6. What made you wish to play chess tonight?” They asked, the chess pieces clacking lightly against the wooden board. Seraph moved his own piece onto a black square.
“Nf3. I don’t know… I just missed you.”
Saturn hummed thoughtfully.  “Well, I suppose I can’t complain. Admittedly, I wanted to ask you to play last night. Be7.”
Pathos perked up lightly, dragging a piece across the board. “H4. Why didn’t you?”
“Nc6. I… I suppose I assumed you were still mad at me for what happened.” The Sun nervously tapped their claws against the table.
“Mad? D3.” Logos gently shifted Pathos’ piece over to the left so it would sit on the right square. “Why would I be mad at you, Sunny?”
“I…” Saturn sighed. “I’m not sure. It’s foolish, anyway. D6.”
Qamar hummed pensively. “Nd2.”
“Nf6. Goodness, Moonie, you’re hardly trying tonight,” the Sun teased. Icarus chuckled.
“I’m not playing to win right now. Ne4.”
“Why, if that isn’t a new one. DXe4.”
“DXe4.”
“QXd1.”
“KXd1.”
“...Have you spoken to Eris lately?”
Saturn barked out a strange laugh, scowling. “NXg4. And why would I do that?”
Seraph scoffed. “I was just wondering. She asked about you earlier today. I think she’s been worried since I found you in the snow. Ke1.”
Saturn hummed. “That’s nice. Nb4.”
“...Bd2.”
“NXc2.”
“Kd1. What have you been doing up here all day, anyway?” Artem asked curiously.
“NXa1. The same things that I always do. Though, I’ll admit, I might have gotten sidetracked and stargazed at some point earlier tonight.”
Luna chuckled softly. “ Kc1. Look at you, you SLACKER!”
Saturn laughed. “Oh, please. NXf2.”
The Dove puffed up his chest and sat straight, gesturing dramatically as he took on a mocking tone. “My name’s Saturn Starcatcher, and I never let myself have fun cause I’m too embarrassed to admit that I’m whimsical and silly because I have a massive STICK UP MY ASS.”
“I should punch you.”
“Yeah, but you know you won’t. Rh2.”
“NXe4.”
“Be3.”
“Castle.”
“Oh, you fucker!” The Angel exclaimed lightheartedly. “I should flip this Harmonia-forsaken board right now.”
Saturn barked out a laugh. “If you do, I’m banishing you from my Observatory.”
“Hey, asshole, it’s actually Aster’s Observatory, thank you.” Seraph stated in a matter-of-fact tone. Apollo scoffed.
“It’s not as if she ever fucking makes her way up here, anyway. She’s so absorbed in her own lamentations and praying to a God that gives all but a flying FUCK about her, so really I couldn’t give a shit if it’s her Observatory. She’s taken everything else away from us in the name of her precious Gaea, so until she takes it herself, it’s mine.”
Luna stared blankly at the Sun.
“Wow, Saturn. That was… something. Kd1.”
Saturn pinched the bridge of their nose.
“I… apologise. That was extremely uncalled for. Rd8.”
Seraph nervously flicked his wings, tapping his stubby fingers together.
“It’s um… It’s okay. I just… didn’t know you were that angry at her. Nd2.”
“You’re not?” Saturn asked incredulously. Luna froze, his hands stilling as he went quiet.
“Honestly?” Qamar began. “Of course I am. But… it’s not entirely her fault. You never believed in Gaea like she does. Like I did.”
Saturn looked up at Icarus.
“But does the life that she strives to lead truly exempt her from the consequences of her own actions? She chose to blindly hurt us for an existence that she knew was far beyond her reach, and always would be. Does that excuse her?”
“I—of course not. But… Sunny, she doesn’t understand what she’s doing.”
“She’s a grown woman, Artem. Do not defend her as if she’s a child. She’s done this for, what, thousands of years now? She chose to grovel at the feet of a God who doesn’t even know her name, and she continues to do so, even now. Are you seriously going to accept that she hurt you and I in the name of a deity who’d let us die a million times over?”
Seraph wrung his hands together.
“You… you don’t get it.”
“No, I don’t. NXd2.”
Luna perked up in surprise as he was reminded that there was, indeed, still a game going on.
“KXa1. Sunshine, please, at least try to be a little more forgiving to her. She’s not… she’s not like you and I. She doesn’t know how to step out of a corner when she needs to.”
“...NXf1.”
“Rh3.”
“Rd1. I’m… Luna, I’m sorry.”
Icarus perked up, his wings twitching.
“Really?”
“Of course I am. I… admittedly, you’re right. I am harsh on Asteria. But you… I didn’t know her when she was loving and kind, or however you choose to describe her. All of what I remember her being now is just depraved and destructive. You… you didn’t lose that because you tried to keep it.”
“I didn’t.”
Seraph hummed, the table gently shaking alongside his leg.
“I… I guess you’re right. I should have been more considerate of how she treated you, too, I suppose. I’m sorry, Sunny.”
“Moonshine, you don’t have to apologise.” Neptune whispered in a damn-near pleading tone. “You say sorry far too much.”
“...Bc1.”
“RXc1. Checkmate.”
Shams leaned back in their chair, pinching the bridge of their nose.
“Luna.”
The Moon looked up, his eyes blinking open. He winced from the light before refocusing on the Sun.
“Listen, how about… I try and get along with Asteria for a night?” They proposed reluctantly. Pathos blinked slowly, a giddy grin spreading across his face as he leaned forward.
“You’re serious?”
Apollo sighed. “Juno, do not make me regret my statement.”
Seraph laughed as he pushed himself to his feet, cracking his knuckles. “Okay, okay, okay. I’ll save the bullying for later. Do you want me to go get her now, or..?”
Neptune shrugged.
“Sure, why not. And bring the wine on the way up, too.”
Seraph nodded, dancing happily down the stairs.
God, was it going to be one hell of a fucking night.

this is the position where i was losing. the only move that doesn't throw white's advantage is Rg1, which the bot missed - she played Ke3 which allowed 44. ...Nf3 45. Ke2 g1=Q 46. Rxg1 Nxg1+, which left the position equal:
Tumblr media
the move that lost them the game was accepting my knight sacrifice here:

...where advancing the a-pawn or capturing the b-pawn were the only ways to stay equal.

So, idk if many people on tumblr care about chess much, but I was studying some openings today and I found a very funny trap.
This is for the Ponziani Opening, so you already know some hijinks are going to be afoot, and specifically, this is for the Jaenisch Counterattack. Obviously I can't have pictures for every position, but I'll put them in for the ones that matter.
It goes as follows:
1.e4 e5 2.Nf3 Nc6 3.c3 Nf6 4.d4 Nxe4 5.d5 Ne7 6.Nxe5 (pictured below)
Tumblr media
Now, if you're a fan of the Ponziani, you know that 6...d6 is a losing move because of the brilliant 7.Bb5+ and the gobbling up of pawns and eventual loss of the knight on e5 by Black. But, what I'm going to show you stems from the slightly better move 6...c6. The idea, in short, is going to be to use the light-squared bishop to defend d5, trade it off for a knight, and then enter a position where you're down material but still have a winning chance.
6...c6 7.Bc4 Nd6 8.O-O Nxc4 9.Nxc4
Tumblr media
Now, as you can see, Black has two different attackers on the pawn on d5. If Black plays, 9...Nxd5, then you don't get to do the trap, but you can play
10.Re1+ Be7 11.Nd6+ Kf8 12.c4 Bxd6 13.cxd5 cxd5 14.Qxd5
and now you have taken away Black's ability to castle, and even though you're down a pawn, you have the open e-file, your bishop has a short diagonal, your knight is ready to leap into action, and Black's kind of just sitting on their hands in terms of development.
Tumblr media
But, here's the hysterical part. Remember when I said Black had two things attacking d5 all the way back on turn 9? If they chose to not play 9...Nxd5, then this happens.
9...cxd5?? 10.Nd6#!
Tumblr media
Isn't that the silliest thing you've ever seen? The king is about to die surrounded by loved ones and family. You are untouchable and unstoppable. You're about to do an Agent 47 maneuver and assassinate the one guy surrounded by a swarm of body guards. It's beautiful.

Move 3. Send in your move before May 5th!
And remember, the more people involved, the better and more accurate the selected moves will be, most likely.
