Water Lilies — Japanese Bridge, Claude Monet (1923)
At the age of eighty-two Monet discovered that he had a cataract. The deterioration of his eyesight was horrifying to the artist, who wrote, 'I realized with terror that I could see nothing with my right eye .. a specialist... told me that I had a cataract and that the other eye was also slightly affected. It's in vain that they tell me it's not serious, that after the operation I will see as before, I'm very disturbed and anxious,' In 1923 he was operated on three times to try and correct his right eye. The brilliant fiery reds and yellows of Water Lilies - Japanese Bridge, 1923 are indicative of the impaired sight of the artist, seeing his bridge within a reduced palette. Yet it is the most evocative sum of color and light and composition, creating on overall startlingly emotive effect.

We’ve established that I think green can easily be understood as Yuko’s color. The fact that Kiwami so often sees her brother Nishiki bathed in sickly green light when he’s acting uncouth - in the alley outside of Serena, the scene where he kills one of his men, etc - has sad implications in this context. It’s a physical manifestation of how Yuko’s influence over Akira’s life, (or rather her memory’s influence over Akira’s life,) has curdled from something innocent into a medium by which he can express his anger, resentment and helplessness. Perhaps the worst part is that we, the audience, can’t even confidently say that this isn’t what Yuko would have wanted. Didn’t her father figure Kazama secretly murder her parents? Didn’t her trusted attendant Dr. Hiyoshi swindle her only caretaker and abandon her to die? Would that girl really take umbrage with Nishiki lashing out viciously in memoriam of her?

Obsessed with Nishiki being beautiful and flashy, only for it to be revealed that he’s concealing an internal reality of shocking loneliness and fear, while Yuko is fairly unassuming on the outside, but is home to a vast accumulation of interests, opinions, theories, and misconceptions that she was only able to amass because she spent her entire life in isolation. Freaks the both of them.
