Yuko was a normal kid who ended up hospitalized before puberty and stayed that way through high school. Solely by virtue of how stressful that lack of normalcy would be for a child who’s already been orphaned, I would not be surprised at all if some of that was psych ward time. Her early teens must’ve been hellish.

Kiryu & Yumi are such good children to Kazama (parasite host coded) because they have to deny their own agency in interpreting the fact that they were more or less raised by their abductor to protect his own projected identity as a Good Man. Even after he owns up to it, Kiryu’s still protecting him. He’s just spent too long following him, loving him, insulating him to do anything else. Kazama made him in this shape and he retains it against all outside logic. Jesus Christ Kuze was right

replaying yakuza 0 and kazama is such a malevolent figure, having played through the rest of the series, which is kind of impressive considering neither the games nor kiryu ever really explicitly spell out that he's maybe the worst actual person in the sprawling tojo cast. like, even in the man who erased his name, kiryu is still holding on to the idea that kazama was a… complicated figure, but still one that honestly cared for him and the rest of the sunflower orphans. but playing through it again and he just seems manipulative and cruel; the best you can say for him is that he may be guilt-ridden enough by what he's doing to not want kiryu and nishiki working directly underneath him, but that's as much weakness as it is conscience. kuze picks up a lot of dimensionality as a benefit; he seemed pretty one-note originally, but playing through it again he's essentially right about kiryu's role in the whole organization. he made the mistake of trying to frame kiryu for a murder, rather than simply asking him to take the fall for one, but that's a tactical blunder, not a strategic one
